ROM reviews - Nexus 4 General

Alright I'll admit it, I have had ORD for about 3 years now. I've made a thread like this in the HTC Desire Z forums because I litterally didn't skip any ROM available there. Now owning an N4, I'll do the same thing... eventually...
This thread will grow and grow. It's my OWN, PERSONAL opinion... Don't judge me...
So here it goes:
SlimKat: The ROM I'm using is beta 1.7. And as of that version, I must say this ROM is feature rich already. It's fairly stable. What I liked the most is its kernel: I get great performance while conserving battery life when needed. I usually get home from University with about 15% battery or less. But with this ROM I get about 50% left. AnTuTu benchmark with about 100 apps installed (+gapps) scored a remarkable 19807. I was amazed by the 3D performance when benchmarking which stayed at 30fps avg.
The ROM has a lot of options and settings for you to tinker with. Nothing dangerous and nothing that can badly affect your phone. A very smooth and eye candy ROM. Good work Slim team, keep it up.
Gn0m3 Project: I was astonished by the idea of this ROM. A very weird idea that seems to be illogical, but it's not. The developer had an idea of implementing the xposed framework a stock ROM with almost no customizations. The developer is just too friendly and knows what he's doing. Minor changes were made to the stock AOSP ROM including under the hood optimizations and GDialer support, and an epic new notification system which I can't describe it.
AnTuTu (with the same amount of apps installed: 100+gapps) scored 17150 which is the expected score being on a stock kernel and everything... But you do get the performance, battery life, and stability of stock AOSP. So it's the perfect ROM for a Daily Driver.
PAC ROM: I used that when I first bought the phone, it was a 4.2.2 ROM with PA, CM, and AOKP smashed together as one ROM full of features. But sadly enough, it also combined all the ROMs' bugs which made it a very unstable ROM. It has all the options and settings. I've spent a whole hour just looking and browsing through the options that this ROM offers.
I didn't have the chance to make a benchmark, but it wasn't very performant, maybe becaude of the many features it has.

Other users' opinions:
okanb3: Well, i contribute.
Purity 14/12: Has good and classify customizations. I also flashed Jana kernel and switched to ART. On ART, Purity is amazing for me. I didn't saw any bugs, stable for daily usage. Antutu gives 20288 Score with 179 apps installed. Battery life is good enough. 4h SoT with 24-36 hours of runtime.
Purity is definetely my hero after PSX. Waiting for PSX v3 release.
hypemanisus:
Primal rom v10: Ok all carbon rom fans that are crying carbon is taking too long well here is a carbon based rom with most of carbon features customised tikes, battery icons, recent position, center clock with day& month, etc. I'm a big fan of trinity/hellscore kernels I'm running trinity here with 4.5 screen time and my runtime is like 8/9 hrs I'm a heavy user always on my phone. running art here. The phone is flawless I'll recommend this over even purity cz I used purity for a while when psx moved and theirs something with data speeds on purity they are slower FOR ME.. try it out cheers

Stock Incredible - Battery?

Came from a highly modded EVO on Sprint to the Incredible on VZW. Now I'm looking to find a ROM that will help with this horrible battery life.
Suggestions?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
CM7 with the latest tiamat kernel and vipers voltage scripts work well.
You should also invest in a sedio extended battery.. I've been looking at 2+ days of use without a charge

Will do, thx!

Accidentally hit submit haha
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Rom-CM 7.0.3
Kernel- Tiamat 4.0.3
I use my phone quite a bit being in the IT field and I can usually get about 28 hours off a full charge. All the nightlies I've used have been roughly the same but figured I shoot you the stable first to try out.
Edit: lol took to long to type looks like jrk beat me.
If you head over to the Droid Incredible Accessories Forum, there is a lot of discussion about extended batteries and their effectiveness.
Otherwise, Pick a stable rom like Skyraider Sense 4.0 or Athena 1.2 (along with many other ROMs), get SetCPU and set a profile to reduce cpu usage while the screen is off
I'm having good luck with the stock software just I replaced the kernel with chads incredikernel and I must say wow huge difference. My stock battery will last all day and then some and my extended seidio 3500mah will run almost 3 days..
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
If you want to keep the sense interface, Skyraider is working great on my wife's dinc. If the vanilla android interface is cool, then CM7 is certainly the way to go. Also I'm getting noticeable improvement using the 1900mAH bat that fits in the stock case. Though I am still testing.
what profiles do you make in SetCPU? I tried it out while using Nils Business Gingersense, but it seemed to be killing my battery more than saving...
Using incredikernel I don't set any profiles as the "smartass" governor in the kernel handles sleep on its own

Agreed. Looks fugly. Plus, The ext battery isn't even necessary once you have a good kernal. unless you are gonna be away from electricity for 2-3 days on the reg, skip it.

As far as batteries.. .Don't forget about the stock EVO battery. 1500mah and fits behind the stock cover. Doesn't sound like much but it was a good 20% increase for me.
Also it's only $7

I've been a devout LG fan... VX6000, VX9800, VX10000 until I got my DInc. Never had issues with LG, but their Android offerings suck on VzW. Now I've got huge respect for HTC, and a strong but dormant love for LG.
As far as battery life... try stuff out. Every phone reacts differently with different kernels and ROMs, not to mention the fact that batteries and hardware - although semi-standard in manufacturing - can have variances at the microscopic level. Trial and error is your best bet. I do about the same with any AOSP kernel and CM7 nightlies... though some run smoother than others.
Tapatalk Pro Sig. Yep, boring.
MIUI beats CM7 hands down on battery life with incredikernel..

Agreed, I think OP should take a look here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmvCpR45LKA
and I guess, to help answer the question.
Top ROM choices:
1) SkyRaider - if you like Sense UI and stock, this is a very popular choice
2) CM7 - If you like to have all the latest and best from Android OS, if you like extra features- this is for you. Quite stable, though some nightlies may have bugs, usually fixed quickly.
3) MIUI - Unique expirence, some compare it to the iPhone. Really though, it's a very nice UI with many great looking skins to get with it.
Top Kernel choices:
If you're using a sense ROM like Skyraider, make sure your using a sense kernel.
1) Chad's incerikernel - he has different versions for Sense and AOSP, both are really great on battery with still nice performance and stability.
2) Tiamat's kernel

Stock vs cm10.1

Hi guys, was wondering about what makes you decide to leave stock and stick to cm, or why you're staying in stock rather than cm10.1?
I've been thinking which ROM to go for, thinking about the cons and pros for each..
for stock, great kernel support from doomlord, better cam( i think ? ), more mods available( better sound from zeroinfinity).
for cm10.1, loads of customization, super smooth( carbon rom for now ).
What additional feature else to add?
Please list down what ROM you're using + the reason why you're sticking with ( stock / cm10.1 ) ? Would like to see different users' opinion.
If u want to preserve warranty, go for stock
If you want performance and daily updates , go for cm 10.1
If you wanna customise your device to d core, go for miui v5.
Aosp, paranoid android and pacman roms are also worth it

Actually, there is a noticeable drop in performance while running CM10.1 vs stock. Whether this is related to the build I'm running being a debug build vs release/optimised or if there's a more efficient graphics driver in stock ROMs I don't know, but I get 5600 in Quadrant running CM10.1 vs roughly 7800 in stock. Pretty large difference.
The most likely reason for this is what I mentioned above, that a debug build is not at all as optimised (as that takes a lot more time for compilation) as stable builds. But still worth mentioning as one is most likely to be running userdebug nightlies at this stage. If this is the case then we will most likely see improved results when the CM10.1 stable gets the new FXP kernel that's been pushed to the nightly builds.

I will find the next person who uses quadrant as a form of measurement for performance.
Or any benchmarking tool
Benchmarks aside, I have been testing gaming on the latest cm nightly. Nova and including modern combat 4 runs smoothly. Don't put your
hopes only on benchmarks.

Was about to type in my last post that I wasn't complaining about the performance, not at all, because it is stellar. Just saying that I've seen better performance on Sony ROMs.

Never said u r complaining. This just came from my point of view. But I agree that on Sonys ROM benchmarks r better. Its difficult to ditch cm, I have always liked aosp but might end up testing Sony's.

How about this....I can send pictures via MMS on Stock Sony firmware no issues (APN is the same as what I use for CM10.1) but I cannot send anything with CM10.1....
I would much prefer to use CM10.1 as well but unless I can find a fix (and yes, I do know how to search )

Good to hear I gotta say this is the FASTEST I have ever seen my vivid run.. but i am a PAC freak which sucks :/
Im also a PAC freak, I absolutely adore hybrid, but with all the added goodies of aokp and cm... Just delicious lol
I usually like to use SS Launcher too which is stupid customizable (but a resource hog I think) so running AoCP with the included launcher (aspire?) probably isn't a fair comparison but I'll say this ROM with crossbreeder is blazing fast!
So far stable too, as far as I can tell, but I haven't been doing too much with it
Going to test this rom out today too!

This theme I would say is the closest it could get to normal. I would add all the themes to the rom if i could
Sorry! I've been running this and wish I could change that myself
Bumping since it looks like nothing's been done since July ...
I noticed a couple of things on this ROM. Firstly, Wi-Fi appears to be broken. Cannot detect my home network even if I'm within three feet of the router. I'm not an expert by any means, so I wouldn't know the first thing about how to fix it.
Secondly, when attempting to change the lock screen security (slide, PIN, password, etc.), Settings force closes. Doesn't matter how I get there, either from the lockscreen setting or the security setting, always force close.
I currently run the official AoCP 6.2 on my Captivate, and I love it! I wanted to update my daughter's HTC Vivid (since I was able to appropriate it for testing and stuff), but I'm disappointed that the unofficial AoCP for the Vivid doesn't seem to be quite ready for prime time ... unless I'm doing something wrong. (I'm wiping everything in TWRP before flashing, flashing three times to make sure it sticks, etc. Didn't try fastboot flashing the boot.img...guess that's next.)
UPDATE: Flashed boot.img after flashing the ROM and Gapps, and lo and behold, Wi-Fi works! I bet the security settings issue will be cleared up, as well...and yep, it is. Lovely AoCP goodness on my Vivid!
The Vivid has much better specs than my Captivate, and as I'm not eligible for an upgrade (my daughter took mine :crying even this old phone represents a step up for me. And I hate Sense and ICS, but I love JB, especially 4.3 ... and the animations in AoCP on my Cappy make it seem like a brand new phone. Wish you could port AoCP 6.2 to the Vivid!

New power mwnu from SlimRoms;
Lockscreen tragets and shortcuts from SlimRoms;
Lockascreen PIN key pad shuffler;

Soo... are you SVLan with a different name? I noticed SVLan is no longer the OP for PureSpeedX. Just curious. I'm running PureSpeedX and it is the fastest, best battery life ROM that has ever existed for the AHD, so if this is from the same guy, I can't wait to play with it. Can we expect that kind of speed? If we have that kind of speed and halfway comparable battery life along with customizations like you have here, this will be insane. I get easily 2 work days worth of medium use out of PSX. That's unheard of for any android really. Anyways, can't wait to test it out, especially the active notifications. Will be flashing ASAP.
Yes im the same guy.
About this rom, this version is not compare in speed and battery life as CM11 is know to drain battery faster the stock kitkat. But for the options and display animations this one have is very responsive. Will get way better on the coming update soon
The ROM looks good
Very nice customizations, smooth, can't say about battery life yet

Well, I figured that much. CM always uses more battery than AOSP, but when you get two days of battery life, I'd gladly sacrifice half that for customization lol. CM has never hit the battery enough to cause a problem, so if I can get two days out of PSX, surely I can get one day out of this easily. Still can't wait to try it out! Thanks!
Problems with keyboard with swipe and immediately closes with no error, problems with signal sometimes drops it all with no network. Airplane mode fixes it for a little. No vibration feedback anywhere except navigation bar.

Best Kernel & Rom combo for a Grandpa (aka best battery life, minimal features)

I'm going to give this phone to my grandpa, he's used to a flip phone, so 3++ days battery life and such.
He will be using it to call, send sms and GPS mostly.
What is the most stable and least battery draining kernel and rom available?
I was using AICP 12.1 ( 7.1.2) with stock kernel
This is my current battery life, it just dies at around 50%

What is the most stable and least battery draining kernel and rom available?
I was using AICP 12.1 ( 7.1.2) with stock kernel
This is my current battery life, it just dies at around 50%

I suggest getting a new battery off your favorite site. Like fleabay or zamazon.

This seems like pretty good battery life on LG L90. I am still on my first stock rom (Kit Kat 4.4) , and battery life is bad. Even if not using phone, because I have a new one, battery drains by itself pretty much. If I use phone for internet surfing , it dies after maybe 3-4 hours of surfing.
Can you tell which ROM are you using?
I also want to change ROM and put some light OS with minimum features just to make phone lighter, more reponsable and to get better battery life.
I thought SLIM Os is the best out there for that.
Could you suggest better one ?

In my opinion Lineageos is better. Also im pretty sure its called slimrom not slimos but I have seen people that moved from slimrom to lineageos and said that the battery life on lineageos was better.
Using the pico or nano gapps also helps a little as they use less ram and CPU processes.(I use mini but I disable a few things). I get about a day an half when I'm using it constantly. Also make sure you don't install to many apps that run in the background and never use apps that free up ram ect as they are useless battery hogs. If you want free ram disable unused things.
Hi, i use a slimrom 7.1.2 without any custom kernel, and the battery life is very good and very fast also, i have hebf optimizer to tweak some phone parameters, and basicly i have everything tuned to performance mode, and with mixed use i have between 5 and half to 6 hours of screen on time
Whatever old rom u use, the battery drains come from Google play service and store, they auto update and u cant control this, the only way is freezing them and u will see the difference.
The best way to force people to buy new phone is overloading old ones without people realize that, the only ROMs with good Google services are the lastest.
