I have a car charger (plugs into cigarette lighter) that I bought for my old HTC Sensation. The brand is HTC, and it's sold for the Sensation.
Question: Can I safely use this charger with my new Moto X? The micro USB plug of the charger will fit my new Moto X, but I wanted to be sure there wouldn't be an electrical problem.

I have no issue with my car charger that I purchased for my HTC evo
Sent on my Moto X
I am coming from the Sensation as well. As I understand it, as a rule, electronics can get damaged when they try to pull more than what the charger can deliver. So as the Sensation had a more powerful charger, we should be OK.
You would not want to do the reverse, and plug the Sensation into the less powerful Moto X charger.

The Sensation must have one powerful charger. The Moto X charger is 1150mA, which is pretty powerful already.
Thank you, flashallthetime, jhedors and Groid, for your advice. It sounds like I'm O.K. with the HTC charger.

I bought a "HTC" branded car charger from Ebay last week.
I got it in the mail today and it seems to be to be built too cheep to be actual HTC brand.
Is there a way to tell what is actual HTC and what is a second hand knock off?
Im not to sure I want to use this charger on my phone for fear it will get damaged.
Was it shipped from China/HongKong? => it is fake
Was it bought on eBay => it is fake
To be honest, I have never seen a HTC HD2 car charger made by HTC(perhaps it is sold with the car holder?). I need such thing but to be honest, I am also a little bit scared about damaging my phone.
Take some images so we can all take a look.
The HTC version of the car charger has the part that lugs in to the cigarette lighter and then a SEPARATE usb wire that connects to it which then connects to the phone, the wire is not permanently attached to the plug. If you bought one of those adapters that say "HTC" on it and glows (for under $10), you bought a fake.
I've got this item:
pearl.fr/automobile/accessoires-12v/station-de-recharge-usb-allume-cigare_PX1093.html add www before because of the silly antispam regulation
with the usb wire it's work well and I can charge 4 device in the same time (hd2/mp3/buetooh car hand free/gps
great and cheap
anyway 5 Volt is 5 volt and it's working !
Thanks for the replies...
yeah its from Ebay and it has the glowing HTC logo on it. wich = fake.
Oh well. glad I didnt spend a lot on it
guess it will be going into the trash with the packaging it came in. I am NOT going to risk my phone for over this piece of garbage.
thanks for the heads up on the "real" HTC car charger. Will search for one of them instead.

Huh? The official one has a lit HTC logo...
I have the official car mount and it comes with the car charger + cable. It's flat on the USB end and has a backlit HTC above the USB port.
Also, you can buy them separately.
does it work? if so, whats the big deal?
Like someone has asked, get some pictures up so we can inspect it

Seriously. I bought a Micro USB cable from the store for like 5.99. Been using the same cigarette USB universal charger for everything from GPS, to Tilt 2, to PSP, to bluetooth headsets using the same adaptor. Never had a single problem for about 3-4 years...
HTC=Taiwan

Hello. I recently got a mycharge amp2000 as shown in the photo. I have problems with it charging my moto x. When I plug it in it charges for a second then turns red an stops charging. Now normally this would be a problem with the charger but I have tried it with two other devices including my nexus 4 and it worked perfectly on those. That is why I am concerned it is a problem with my moto x. Any ideas?

I've never used one of those but I have 4 external batteries and they all charge my Moto X just fine.

Hmm...Strange. It could be just a problem with my portable charger that it is just not compatible with the Moto X's voltage or something weird like that...

hmm, strange it should work due to the fact my coworker has the same thing and it works on her Moto X
Try the OEM cable that came with the phone.

I have the same exact problem. My wife and I both have the Verizon Moto X and we each have two external changers. These chargers work fine with our friends' phones and with our Nexus 7s, but they don't work with either of our Moto Xs. I don't seem to see much about this issue around the internet, maybe we just have rare bugs?
Strange. I've tried charging my Moto X in my car the other day and for some reason it refused to charge at all. I think it was because I wasn't using the OEM cable. I don't know but I'm curious if the charging port is just touchy on cables or that certain voltages aren't accepted by this phone.
P.S. My sister charges her phone in my car with the exact same cable almost every morning so there is no problem with it as far as I'm concerned.

This.
One of my other usb cables won't charge the moto x but works fine with other phones, not sure why but it's a longer than normal cable so maybe that has something to do with it. In any case, my moto x charges just fine with the oem cable and a couple other cables I have laying around.

Thanks, I think you're right...just tried one of the externals with the OEM cable and now it's working. I wonder what the difference is, shouldn't a cable just be transferring the power from charger to device? I always thought a cable was a cable and it was the power supplies that differed. Either way, it's obnoxious to always have to carry around the long cord. On of the benefits of external chargers is compact portability.
Only complaint about the Moto X, otherwise this thing is great.
I've used my old HTC cables from the Thunderbolt, Motorola cables for the Xoom, LG cables from some LG phone, and Samsung cables from the S3 and Note 2. All of them work with the wall plug, computers, VZW car charger, and my Jackery charger.
What's the difference between the OEM and other cables? All I've used are OEM-labeled cables but have been looking at a 6ft cable (Monoprice, Amazon brand, Mediabridge or something braided/jacketed) off Amazon.
ive been using a motorola phone for a while now. Idk if it is moto specific or not, but some cables work and some don't. I know on my prior phone some cables would charge but not transfer data. Then some would say on my screen (not a compatible charger or not authorized charger or something). Those wouldn't charge most of the time, but sometimes if i turned the phone on then off or did certain weird things they would end up charging even though the not authorized prompt was still on the phone.
I think it probably has something to do with whether the cable can transfer data correctly for the moto phone. If it can't then it won't charge the phone. never had a problem with higher quality cables or cables that came from high quality phones. Only had problems with no brand name cables or older cables.
my two cents.
Alls I know is I've got a bunch of cables and wall plugs laying around and I just use whatever and it works. I've got cables and wall chargers from Samsung phones and tab, nexus tab, kobo, kindle, Motorola (old flip phone), iPhone (wall plug anyway), a Sony camera, Samsung camera, leapfrog tablet, a car diagnostic computer.....um ....that's all I can think of......and they all work and in any combination. LOL

I've been out of town and only bought a couple chargers with me. I'm finding some weirdness as I do some tests with these and some other device I borrowed while here.
Basically, the M8 Charger seems to only work to charge the M8. It doesn't work to charge a Galaxy S5 or an iPhone.
I have successfully used the following to charge all 3 phones:
- Computer USB (0.5 - 1.0 A)
- iPhone Charger (1A)
- iPad Charger (2.1A)
- RAV power brick (2.1A)
However the M8 charger will ONLY charge the M8.
It clearly isn't an amperage issue since the M8 charger is only 1.5A.
So what is it?
Since all the other adapters I tried seemingly work on the M8, but the M8 adapter only works on the M8, I'm wondering why I don't just throw the M8 charger into the "bin of forgotten things" ?

Yeah I think they are but you will get a better answer from the m8 users
I think the question you need to ask is, why your M8 charger isn't charging other devices, yet my one does!?

I've used my M8 charger for a Note II, an iPod and an iPad with no issues. Something's wonky with yours, imo.
I don't know, but something is off about mine. The stock ROM throws a fit about it not being the OEM charger and that it's in slow charge mode. It's the stock OEM charger I took out of the box one week ago. Lol. 1.5A and all.
It does still charge though, and it charged my HTC Droid Incredible, iPod 5G and Classic, along with my BlackBerry Z10. No issue there. Just the opposite.
I'll assume it's ok though, I just plug it in for the night. And I'm now on the GPe ROM so it doesn't pop up slow charging info, and I don't miss it.
I'm wondering if it just can't match the 1.5A it's supposed to have, maybe falling short? I'd try a 2A charger, but I haven't got any since I sold my iPad. And my Z10, Dinc, and iPhone/iPod chargers are all 1.0A. But since I only charge it at night, it doesn't make a difference anyway.
I'd love to know what's up with yours though. Something about HTC chargers seem to be odd. The one from my 2010 Incredible works, but makes a terrible whine so I can't even use it. It started maybe a year in and I switched to another brick that's been fine since.
Maybe you should try charge to BlackBerry playbook?

I ordered the Moto G as a gift for my sister. The only USB charger she has is the one that came with her iPad Air. Will that one by OK for the Moto G? It is over 2A (2.4A I think) and I read somewhere that Apple doesn't follow the USB charging standards.
If anybody tried the Moto G with the ipad charger please let me know!
Thanks

I tried at my brother's home and it works
Thanks! How fast does it charge? I read somewhere that it could charge with just 0.5A (so really slow) even though the charger is over 2A, is this true?
So, does the iPad charger charge the Moto G at a good speed?
@2014 yes it should charge quickily
Thanks. She tried it and she said the ipad charger charged the Moto G in about 1 hour, which seems fine.
I have a generic 2.1a charger see pics... 1 h 14 min to full from 25%
according to motorola moto g can only use 1,5a max... even if the charger has more power it does not use all...
I thought the device would heat more using this 2.1a charger, but not the same as the 500mA or 850mA... my came with a 850ma charger...

Technically, the phone will automatically reduce the voltage and Ampe it receive. So just plug it in your phone and it does the rest for you.
I have so many chargers in my house, HP Touchpad, Motorla X910, Moto G, amazon 9w2A etc...
just plug into the Hp touchpad or amazon if I wanna charge fast. And the other which isn't in hurry
totally safe ! Unless you intend to use with while charging and the over-heat may cause a problem
Hello I am from the UK, I got the M8 at a great deal and it came today. However there is a problem with the HTC charger not being suitable for UK plugs, i.e they dont fit. However I got given an adapter for it unbranded, as a white plug with a USB slot for the HTC USB cable.
Now my worry is, from my knowledge you should only use chargers of the same brand as other chargers can do damage over time. Using the white plug given, it is not HTC branded, although the cable is still from HTC. But is this bad for my phone? That am not using a HTC branded charger? I want to charge it before it is powered on but I also don't want to use a dodgy charger.
Hard to say. If its some off-brand, cheap charger, it can have some defect that can conceivably damage the phone.
But if its decent quality, I interchange my MicroUSB chargers all the time (Samsung, HTC, etc.). Maybe technically not the best thing to do. But I haven't noticed any ill effects; and I'm willing to accept the consequences on the off chance something happens.
Worth buying the original IMHO.

Mine was shipped from Hong Kong so came with an English plug but I currently live in Australia. It shipped with a UK to AUS adaptor and this has been working fine. I think that's the cheaper option then buying a whole new charger.

I only say this because I did this.. i got my HTC ONE M8 and thought the plug didnt fit but the earth prong expanded (i havent had a new phone since htc one x .. apparently this is the new design on phones as my friend with S5 laughed at me when i said the plug confused me for a while lol)
well some cheap non brand chargers can harm your device battery. there are a lot of complains like this. so if you even want to change your charger i recommend buying the original HTC charger or same quality charger of other brands.
