Hi guys fairly new to android been on ios since the beginning.
my problem is when I try to update from 4.2.2 to 4.3 OTA it downloads fine but when its installing gets about 25% done then phone reboots and I get error message "could not install software update please try again", tried it about 20 times in last couple of days just keep getting exact same error. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Hi!
If you have CWM or TWRP installed, uninstall it and the update. as recovery prevents OTA from completing.

Waiting for good news. :fingers-crossed:
Great news I am on 4.3 with root via OTA. Yes it did work!
So what you must do: Flash .534 via flashtool, then root, then OTA (with ota survival mode enabled) to 4.3!
Don't do anything else like disable system apps, only what I said in this post!

You are correct mate it is only partial root

rooted partially
Basically I would not consider it rooted as when using flashtool, busybox was unable to be installed.
Can't even edit build.prop
not rooted via OTA
Agreed, unable to edit build.prop to add in my net.hostname for the LAN. So wouldn't consider it a root at all.
Anyone found a way to root without unlocking the bootloader?

Thanks for fast answer.
I thought the same, but when it is starting up to update in the middle it shows the "dead" android with the red "!" , you know.
after that the phone boots normaly and it says "not successfull"...
i already tried some times...
I will try the rootkeeper, thanks for that again.

Have you change some file (like to disable camera sound ) ?
I've the same issue with OTA, and I revert all changes I've made in the past, and it work.
If you rooted your Device by changing the Kernel, you have to flash the Boot signed of the Base FW (32 i guess).
The update compares the Base Rom and the Root Exploit set you an secured Kernel, that doesn't match with the System > Problem solved.
The Root won't deny the Update. You can temp. unroot with the ported Rootkeeper (thanks to Mattlgroff) and restore the Root after the Update.
But the Boot.img must fit!
I think i did not change something. Except the kernel that came wih the rooting by mattlgroffs tool.
So i need to change the kernel with a recovery kernel via adb?
Could somebody tell me the comands? (With cwm on a SGS was it a bit easier )

Yes, you have to use fastboot for it (it's in the Folder of the root exploit)
Download your current FW, unpack it and copy the Boot_signed into the Root folder. Then open the cmd window, navigate to the Root Folder by cd command.
Flash the image by
Fastboot flash boot boot_signed.
Alternate you can rename it to razr_i_boot.img and overwrite the secured Kernel in the Exploit. Than just root again and it will flash the right secured Kernel.
Thank you. I will try that today. Btw. where can i find mattlgroffs root keeper? The version in the play store does...nothing?

I don't know about the latest update but I've previously done OTA updates before and kept root (I've got a Xperia T not V).

I also had no OTA available so used PC Companion to go from 9.1.A.1.140 to .141 on my Xperia T. I don't know the differences between XT .141 and XV .145 but was able to regain root using Bin4ry's Root Many Android method
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460, it might work for you.

if you perform OTA update (via PHONE), you won't loose anything, actually USUALLY you don't loose anything, and of course, using root keeper...
that's totally obvious when you use PC Companion, you will loose root..
And for regaining root access, use DoomLord EasyRootKit, which is now available in Android Development Section, it actually covers ALL devices, including V
wish you luck
ok. ive try update it via OTA, while keep the root access using voodoo rootkeeper, but no success. the main problem here is ive installed CWM. i for got about this "Keep in mind that at the moment installing CWM will broke OTA updates, even if you unroot and/or remove CWM." so there is no chance to update it via OTA anymore right?:victory:

CHANCES are always CHANCES, so you have to try them
otherwise we wouldn't call them "Chance"
but, in theory, with aforementioned conditions, it's hard to believe that you will be able to update via OTA...

only the download link is banned, you can get the file somewhere else, and the guide tells you how to use it, and this one is actually an easier option:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2130276
it roots the nexus 4, which is the same hardware as our zxr, it should work.

Thanks, I gave this a try.
The two exploits, Aragorn and Gandalf, both fail. "Try another exploit if available. Error 5" Well I gave it a shot. Any advice is welcome
I also want to root my c5503, with a locked bootloader.
I found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2386405 and according to it i just need a older kernel.
So here are my questions: is the 10.1.1.A.1.310 old enough and does it work with this root method?
How do i get just the kernel out of an existing ftf file?
Thanks for help guys!
Download vroot to your pc and intall, plug your phone run vroot and press green button that says root, that's it, now you can change the superuser app of your choice.
Hope I helped

Not really. Vroot is no longer available anywhere.
Thanks for the hint, but i don't trust in vroot...
try kingo root
Made in ZR
I finally managed to root with the following steps:
1) flashed the .310 Nordic ftf
2) used doomlords exploid v18
3) ota updates to vers .67 --> root still persists
I also tried to flash only the 310 kernel (like rooting the description from the z says), but that ended up in a bootloop with the Sony logo. -no idea why!

how did you enable the ota update on rooted .310? I temporarily disabled it with ota preserver but nothing happens.
I didn't had to enable it, it was enabled by default!
I just gave the ota update after the root a try and it just worked...

It thinks it's already updated for me. so is there no way to enable it?
EDIT: Never mind, managed to fix it: It turns out I was trying to upgrade from the global version of .310; reflashing to the Hong-Kong version allowed me to update.

You can't...
At least not through update center or pc companion...
Just flash latest ftf using flashtool and root new firmware...
It's two click job so that shouldn't be a problem...
Just make sure you exclude wipe data option to preserve your accounts, data and apps...

If you have rooted 24A with a stock recovery, you can take the OTA and retain root..
Ok so I figured I'd ask here instead of making a new thread since it's sort of relevant. Hope not to thread jack. I have a vs980 rooted on 24a with stock rom and twrp. My phone tried to update to 25b yesterday and I canceled it by switching from WiFi to 4g. 2 questions I have are can I take the update and stay the same or not yet since I have twrp? And 2 it started downloading automatically, if I can't take the update is there a way to keep it from downloading again? Thanks in advance.

1) It won't install without the factory recovery.
2) You have to remove/disable/freeze the updater app to stop it from prompting you. (I don't remember the exact name of it)
So there really isn't any harm in letting it download since it won't install without factory recovery? I'll check the apps I have frozen again I thought I froze it, but maybe not. Thanks. Do you know if it's simply called system updates?
Software Update is the app name people are freezing using Titanium, don't know what the .apk is, I have a debloated rom currently. You should be able to find and rename the .apk for Software Update to stop it.
I've been using ultimate backup lite and I have a system update app I could freeze just wanted to make sure it was the right one. Tried to post a picture, but I don't have enough seniority.
is ioroot still the best rooting tool?
Also when I take 25 will I have to reinstall twrp?
