[Q] Moto X Lag - Moto X Q&A

I find that the Moto X lags more than both the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. I've used it with Dalvik as well as ART but am not impressed with its performance.
Lag is noticeable when moving multiple Facebook Messenger chat heads when Chrome is loading pages.
Also Chrome seems to flicker with black screens, which does not happen on other devices.
*I also use the GEL, not sure if that takes more resources to run.
Does anyone else experience such performance issues?
I'm just wondering since droid-life seems to love this phone but I always am frustrated by its performance.

Honestly I think you got a dud because there are like a million threads on here saying the exact opposite, I've never had a single lag or stutter

Well, I have to agree with you. I get the occasional lag while scrolling on chrome. The N4 was smooth as I remember.

the only time i've had issues with chrome acting like a pig is when i load a website that isn't optimized for mobile. typically there are resource intense scripts, too many adverts and/or multiple pop up style ads that also run scripts. xda even sometimes acts like a pig in chrome and its not device independent.
if you want to see performance lag, use a device with 512MB of RAM. the X is a beast and handles more than my '12 N7 (and I thought that thing flew).

I believe the lag was caused by the Google Experience Launcher (GEL).
I did a factory restore and installed an updated version of GEL and that tremendously improved performance and reduced lag.

Also chrome is notorious for having issues with kitkat

I haven't used chrome for a very long time....cause in my humble opinion, it sucks donkey things.....
But never had lag of any kind...even out of the box, before I rooted and tweaked the poop outta it.

Someone just messaged me this "fix" for android lag

I personally haven't noticed any lag but thought it might be worth sharing here.
sorry if its already been shared
I don't really notice a difference.
The typical Android hiccups are still there.

What's lag?

I don't experience any lag at all from this device (and didn't on my S2 running Cyanogenmod for that matter either).
No lag to report on the Nexus 4... But interesting read nonetheless. Might use it on the Galaxy S2 (Which DOES lag, even though some say it doesn't. Compare both N4 and S2 side by side... It's painful to watch)
Is this like jet lag?
Who Lag?
More like turbo lag

No lag here on this badboy!
The lag is from the way Android was designed originally. Not all apps are even optimized for the platform and others are quick ports from other platforms. Also they are still lacking with hardware to software optimizations.

The're some apps which are lagging. But the Nexus4 itself? Bullsh**!!!
Smoothest Android phone ever (just compare to the Note 2, this phone lags!)

Agreed. It may be the applications that lag but not the system itself. I have yet to see a hiccup when browsing through my Nexus.

There are some pretty awful frame drops when using the device in landscape, especially in the app drawer. I wonder if this fixes that.

Compared to my iPhone 4 the N4's browser is like internet explorer vs chrome.
Sounds like snake oil. Androids remaining lag is too deeply rooted to be squashed with some shell code parlor trick. Android gives content fetching more priority than rendering the UI, it's something that Google has to take care of by rewriting the framework. Ios does this beautifully btw, it doesn't need 4 cores for fluid scrolling and even with 4 cores nexus can't touch it ... yet.

In all honesty...

This phone sucks at multitasking. Galaxy S2 has a dual-core 1.5 GHz processor as well, but it multitasked with ease. This phone feels like an old person that's gonna croak over and die whenever I multitask things. Ex: I'd be downloading an app and go to my messages to read a new message. The phone lags like hell before it opens the message.
The only reason I haven't traded it or sold it is because the only phone I'd consider purchasing right now is an iPhone 4s. I agree android is a bit better but I got bored of it.
But the multitasking problem is the main reason why I dislike this phone (aside from locked BL and and 3 giant buttons taking up the screen.)

I've had this issue on stock, joker and batakang.
I haven't noticed at all...
Personally, the ENTIRE time I've had my Atrix, I never noticed any multitasking lag...
Then again, it all depends on how you use the phone in the first place...
I mainly download, tweet, listen to music and (attempt to) clear the MGS VR missions on mine and I can switch back and forth rather smoothly...
the phone lags when trying to do more than one thing at a time, on any rom.
yes the phone sucks.

Have you frozen most, if not all the stock bloatware, have a static wallpaper (nothing that moves), doth thou use task killers?
Oh and what's your usual CPU usage? (What's your hourly average... guestimate if you have to...)
I used pimp my rom and set the oom values to medium and used greenify to hibernate apps and my phone is running great.

Then we do most of the same. If I download an app (let's say Firefox mobile.) I'd go back to twitter, but it'd take a while for twitter to come back up. Even if I don't clear my recent apps, it will still lag when I'm on there.

It would only get laggy if you have a ton of "recent apps"...
I usually keep 5~7 apps recent and clear away the apps I don't need to keep "recent"
Oh and you could use greenify too while you're at it...

If you have to do all this then you are proving his point.
I buyed my AHD at 250$ factory unlock on kijiji in very good condition and for the price I think its a very verry good phone I was going to buy a one S at 320 when I saw this phone . Now Im so happy with it no lags at all. If someone unlock the bootloader it will be a purchase of gold
Sent from my MB886 using xda app-developers app
I never said I used all that
I just use Greenify and switch between a static and live wallpaper all the time... (I'm very indecisive...)
All I did was mention various tactics to to help... Oh and to mention that task killers are bad... Just the usual stuff...
I've tried using greenify and can't get much out of it because you cant do anything with system apps.
That's why you pair it with other battery saving apps like juice defender...
IMO I used JD's Extreme Settings, and just go with that and greenify.
I haven't charged from yesterday, leaving about 53% (I had 55% at midnight, left wi-fi on...)
I've watched Skyfall (in glorious HD) with wi-fi on in the background, and I'm about to start the last Ninja VR Mission for MGS with 32% left.
No Lag, No Issues. If people still insist on complaining about the phone, so be it. This phone is a diamond in the rough, you have to be the one to make it what is.

Task killer too agressive

I've noticed that my browser gets dumped from ram quite often, even if I don't use a different app. It seems to be time constrained.
The reason this is so annoying is I really hate when the browser has to refresh the page.

****. I'm concerned about this because my old nexus 10 would do the same thing. I wonder if 2GB is just not enough memory for these high resolution displays. A good chunk of it goes towards video memory, leaving less for the OS to work with.
My stupid n10 would constantly dump tabs on chrome, no matter the type of rom I used (stock, aosp-based CM and AOKP, or just random aosp builds)
Thing is, it's retarded because there's always plenty memory available

This is not all about the overall free memory... This is about the threshold of the OOM of android. If I had the HTC One right now I could explain it to you easily but sory my answer right now is too generic so just search what those are...
@greengoldmello
There's no such thing as "dumped on RAM" as all active apps are running on RAM. Once they are flushed/removed from RAM that's the time your apps refresh when opened again.

Everyone in 4.4 using ART. Conclusion?

I feel like the device is much snappier. I heard battery is supposed to be better with it as well but I can't confirm. The xda app was never the best , now it is almost fluid o.o. or at least noticeably better. What do you have to say ?
i was told to add this:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/1qbko3/art_broken_apps/
edit: I would like to add that the apps i notice this most is for instance, when i use hangouts and i'd right ALOOOOOOOT with someone and then scroll up at a fast rate, it would stutter. Now, this stutter is nearly gone.
XDA - xda app is one of the most noticeable, stutter has been reduced by such a large margin that you'd have to try it yourself to believe it.
G+ would have the occasional hickup when scrolling through news posts. Next stop would be the play store, it used to stutter a lot as well, now it's become a lot better. Just for the hell of it i compared it to my sister's note 2 and the difference is there.
I doubt this is a placebo effect, i'm even considering to make a video as proof with dalvik on and off for the hell of it.

Well, it's kind of obvious, if you want the best experience for now you're going to want to go with the official 4.4, since the developers need their time to work their magic.
I have no crashes, i'm using ART so far cause i could care less about what's app. I'll report in about battery life observations once i've at least had this thing running for a whole day.
Feels really smooth so far; don't use any apps that crash(thankfully) on ART. Hard to tell with the battery as I came off a custom kernel that was picked for low power usage. Like with any new firmware, it usually takes a few days of my phone running before I can really judge things. Got to give all the apps running a little time to muck things up to get a solid feel for real world performance; but I'm hopeful from what the past few hours performance/battery wise.

It's not worth the hassle in my opinion. I couldn't notice any tangible difference, performance-wise. I tried it on SlimKat, though. I may probably give it a second try now on stock but the whole idea of having non-working apps like Whatsapp and TiBu just takes the appealing away for now.
Could this just an elaborate hoax to test the placebo effect of Android optimization? I don't understand the true potential if it.

moto x performance

Has anyone notice their x get slower over time? In the first month mine was great but now I notice a bit of lag. While an app is updating its almost useless to try and do anything else. I don't have that many apps installed and I'm on stock 4.4.2 art.
I have noticed this on occasion. A couple things seem to help me. 1. Hitting the recent apps button on the nav bar and swiping some apps away seems to help. 2. If that doesn't help, a restart will usually does the trick.

It's the app. I got mine stock rooted and never slows down for a few months now. Even after a bunch of apps installed.
