Hi, so I'm a newbie developer with no budget to buy visual studio for windows phone 8 dev.
I already used the 30 day trial that they offer, do you have ideas for alternative options? specifically the following:
1. Is there an alternative program to visual basic that I could use to develop windows phone 8 apps?
2. Is there any way to extend my expried trial or receive another trial for another program?
3. I saw that visual basic ultimate 2013 offers 90 day trial, can I develop wp8 apps with it?
Thank you, I'm a beginner 19 year old dev and I'd love to hear your wisdom Dvir

Are you a student? If yes, you can register at dreamspark.com and you'll get VS 2013 Professional for free you'd also be able to dev unlock your phone with a limit of 10 instead of 2 apps.. if you're not, I don't know how you could extend the trial, sorry :/
The Windows Phone SDK comes with Visual Studio Express. Its free, but just needs registered to get your key.

A dreamspark subscription only bumps the limit to 3.

You get and refresh the key for free as well...
Sorry, didn't know about that at all.. However it depends on how you verify at Dreamspark. My school doesn't offer a .edu mail, nor is it registered for dreamspark. I sent them my student ID and my identity card, and the limit for me is 10.

Have you tried Visual Studio 2012 Express? It should support WP8 development work. Below is quoted from MSDN site as I couldn't add the link in the post yet.
Applies to: Windows Phone 8 | Windows Phone OS 7.1
Visual Studio Express 2012 for Windows Phone is a complete development environment for creating Windows Phone apps.

Today windows ce6 was launched. can anyone tell me if this will work on a qtek 9100 ? currently running win mobile 5
Don't think so buddy .
"Released" means to manufacturers and developers. You and I will probably never see it on any device currently available.
It'll still be 4-6 months before any devices come to market with it...
4-6 months?
hehe.
Windows Mobile 6.0 will be released in 2008.
Platform Builder
Well, I've gotten my grubby little hands on the Ce6 platform builder, which should allow me to make a rom. Unfortunately, it requires a hefty amount of configuring to get it to work. When I get some time, I'll see if I can make a rom.
-Jim
I have also gotten the embedded CE6, when I have some time I'll check it out. See if it can be installed on the Wizard
plasticbiker: is that with a full HTC bsp, or just the generic non OEM version?

Would be nice to have a stable WM5 first...........
This is not what I was led to beleive it was, this is for developers and manufacturers who want to pay $1000+ for all the software. Maybe someone who is a hardcore programming hobbyist can help us, other than that I think we get to wait.
any chance of you shareing your embedded CE6 alone it may take awhile but if we all work together thing will go alot faster as u know

I have just the basic Platform Builder that MS is giving out.
Link
My experience with WM5 platform builder leads me to believe that it won't be a trivial task to create something that is actually usable on the wizard. One needs to migrate drivers and such from WM5. Odds are, unfortunately, that the WM5 drivers will not be compatiable. Microsoft is claiming Ce6 is a complete rewrite.

Only seen KeePass Droid so far. It looks like you need to create initial database on a pc and download to device, but should good when its complete. They have versions for winmo, blackberry, symbian so think it wont be long before its fully functional.
I e-mailed Ilium about eWallet, loved that one on WinMo, but they don't really have any plans for android at this point
keepass droid seems nice, getting tan-lists working takes quite a while (tan-wizard in kp2, export to kp1, export to kp droid...) but now everything works great, thanks for the tip
Have anyone tried SplashId for Android?

PGP
Hi!
Do you know any PGP/GPG application for android? I would like to read my PGP encrypted emails on Hero.
Regards
I've emailed Developer One to see if they have any plans for an Android version of Code Wallet.
Will update with reply.
Edit : email reply "At this time we are not planning it, maybe in the future."
eWallet
I got this reply from Ilium Software on August 12th:
"Hello,
Thank you for contacting Ilium Software. We are planning a solution for Android, but we don't yet have a final plan. I'll pass your request to our developers!"
I used eWallet for many years on Windows and it's the program I miss the most now, along with a divX player.

Ditto that, I will contact Illium too - the more people do that, the more likely the port will be.

install debian and use that to find programs to read them, e.g. i use mutt and gpg on my computer.
Try B-Folders, looks like a very nice app, it's free and their planning a desktop version with full sync as well. Encryption looks OK too!
This back from Ilium on 31st August:
Hello,
Thank you for contacting Ilium Software. We are investigating our options for eWallet on Android, but we don't yet have a final plan. I'll pass your request to our developers!
Thanks again for contacting us and feel free to contact me if you have any other questions,

I'm looking at B-folders at the moment, but ewallet is very good.
If KeePass is not your solution (it is mine ), you might want to try "Keeper" which is a free Android App with (paid) Win/Mac/Linux clients. However, I don't know if it covers advanced functionality like TANs really well...
Spb Wallet (and not only) for Android
Spb Software House has started to develop some (useless) application for Android, as Spb TV and Spb Geo Game.
We hope that in future also begin to develop some program more useful, such as the excellent Spb Wallet.
If you want to contribute to sustaining the interest to Android of Spb, please rated this poll:

Actually, i am at work now so i don't have the usb cable. I was searching for support for right to left languages in WP7 such as Arabic, but i found this topic which confirm that we can install any third party app without requiring a Marketplace developer account. could anybody confirm..?

It doesn't work on my HD7.
I installed the cert, but it can't connect to the phone.
It does see if it's locked or not, however.
I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
oooops i already have the same at home Win 7 X64. so, i have to try on X32 version.
: )
I tried on W7 Ultimate 32 bit aswell, it gives an error immediately.
On 64 bit I get an error after I click on Update
they have discontinued their developer unlocking tool.
I tried on a 32bit pc, didn't work.
It chucks the error as soon as the program starts.
I also tried in safe mode, but Zune can't connect to the phone.

Unlock issue and fix
I was posting onto a thread a few days ago but it has been locked now so thought Id post the fix I found in the end.
The problem
I bought a t-mobile hd7 from a store in California and wanted to unlock it for use in the uk. Unfortunately htc hadn't published the IMEI code so no website could unlock it.
Solution
I went to allot of different sites recommended on here and eventually googled http://www.cellunlock.net . They also could not unlock my phone but offered to find an unlock for me in 3-20 days. 3 days later they came through with a code and my device is now unlocked.
I hope this helps people!
This code from Crackberry.com will give you a %50 discount by the way - DSC-23
not sure if it will still work but it brings the price down to the same as other sites
3 days to unlock a phone is too long
You can Request a Unlock code from T-mobil because the don't have a international plan they have to unlock the phone for you i take about a Week fro you to get the unlock code just let the tech suppor know that you travel out side the US and they will get you the code.

they told me a week, I had the email the next day (for my hd2, not my hd7).
I am told that if I buy a HTC HD7 on an o2 simplicity 30 day contract then contact o2 to say that their signal is too poor where I live they will unlock it for a fee.
Can anyone confirm this?
I live in the UK in a known poor signal area.
well its workin now. hmmm actually i am planing to explore my device i mean the files, and trying to add other keyboard layout i mean Arabic.
What can jailbreak/unlock do besides the network/sim unlock? Can it provide access to things like in the iPhone to cydia and installous where we can get free apps or is it a WIP? Either way I was looking at chevron wp7 jailbreak tool. What does that do? Sorry abt the noob questions.

it developer unlocks the phone so you can install side loaded unofficial apps. Up to 10 apps at the moment (I think). Right now there are not many unofficial apps out there.

Hi, does anyone know if this is a genuine quote from Julien Schapman, seems to have shelved his jailbreak device manager.
Because I was bored getting hundreds of emails from people asking me to send them WP Device Manager so they can continue to use pirated applications, and because there will be a short term solution for homebrews, I decided not to include my jailbreak tool. I respect other developers and I don’t want to be responsible for piracy, I’ve been contacted by Brandon Watson from Microsoft and I wish to be involved in the official homebrew support on Windows Phone.
Thanx.
For HTC HD7, is there any apps to block your unwanted calls. I really love some apps like Magicall when I used Windows Mobile 6.x. Any idea ?
Not sure if this is going to be worth anything but I am in the process of TRYING to develop an application to do this, I traded in my iphone for the HD7 in hopes of developing apps for the new OS, I have a programming background but for windows applications, so the jump to programming for mobile devices under this new OS shouldn't be too difficult. I will look into it this weekend and keep you posted.
Thnx in advance.

I want to learn Java for the purpose of programing Android. I aim to (in my opinion) fix the obvious and glaring faults of the Android OS that make the OS un-desktop friendly for 10 inch Tablet users. LOL..
I notice lots of good places to learn Java for free like the java-made-easy.com site or Udemy.com BUT most if not all of these use the Eclipse IDE and This is my problem. Now that Google has released Android Studio Stable back in December and is encouraging folks to switch to it as the new official IDE - where does this leave a newbie like me? - I cannot find any tutorials for learning Java that are actually designed to work with Android Studio.
This would leave me having to use Eclipse and I am worried if I learn this method I will not be able to transfer my work to Android Studio as well worried I'll be learning an outdated tool/system - if so I'd have to relearn Android Studio's way of doing things that differ from Eclipse... seems like a waste of time.. doing double work.
What should I do? Am I stuck between a rock and a hard place picking the worst time to try to learn Java?
I don't wanna learn the Eclipse way if it's going to be obsolete but there are no tutorials for learning java with Android Studio yet - or are there and I'm just missing them?
Looking forward to your answers, Thank you.
I suggest UdaCity.

Thank you, I'll consider it.
What IDE does it use? I cant tell from the webpage. They have a 14 day trial and then it's $1.99 a month there after.
IDE is Android Studio.
You can register as free account, unless you want to join "assessments required for certification" program or coaching. Checkout the "Terms of service" in sign up dialog. register as "attendee" .
As for what courses do they have, click on "View Courses" in start page.
Enjoy

I attempted to sign up for the free course (Intro to Java Programming - https://www.udacity.com/course/cs046) But there was no option to "join "assessments required for certification" program or coaching" that would have been any different from a "free" account.
In other words your post led me to believe that you could take and complete the whole course for free just without the certification or coaching options - it doesn't look that way. They only type of account I see offered is the 14 day trial. Plus they ask for a credit card, and they are not getting my info. I cannot find an option to only register as an "attendee".
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anyone else know of any tutorials for free that are designed to work with the new stable version of Android Studio?
It's a regret you can't find the right way to get start! I'll try to explain more clearly.
Most of the courses in Udacity have two choice : "Enrolling in a Course" and "Accessing course material". Select the former means you willing to join the paid course program, hence you got asking credit card etc., In your case, you should select "Accessing course material" which's right below "Enrolling in a Course" and it's the free one.
While some course like "How to use Git and GitHub", you can only see "Accessing course material", see the different?
You should also read "Help and FAQ" to get a better idea of how it work.
I'll look again when I have more time tonight. . --> Thanks.
I signed in with Google instead of registering manually, perhaps that's why I didn't see the options you speak of. :cyclops:
wow, a cyclops. I never saw that one before LOL
