I definetly don't want to brick my Moto X, but which thread has a root method that still works on 4.4.2? From ALL that I've searched I can only find root methods that involve just the 4.4 update and don't mention anything about working for 4.4.2... I'm trying to find a root method that doesn't involve flashing a custom recovery.

You mean 4.2.2? Because the Moto X doesn't have 4.4.2 yet (and might never get it).
What version of the phone do you have? If you want to root without flashing a custom recovery, try SlapMyMoto. It's in Moto X Android Development.

if you want root you have to have a unlocked bootloader. install TWRP for 4.4 and SUPERSU
if you dont have one then there is no root right now and you have to wait.
if I flash the stock recovery back, i'll lose root?

My wife has this phone and i have the galaxy s3 she is about to get an iphone 6 and i will be taking her lg g2 . I like running custom roms and having root and recovery and such . my s3 had a locked bootloader limiting what i could do to it. i was wondering if someone would look at the state of this phone and direct me to a guide ? I have read that i neede towelroot or stump root to get it rooted since its 26a then an app called freegee could install twrp . main question is since its on 4.4.2 am i stuck to 4.4.2 based roms?

Avoid freegee, from what I've read here, a good way to brick. Stump root will root the phone but I don't know the steps involved, maybe someone else can enlighten that part. Freedom tool works well for twrp. As far as roms go, you can totally flash different roms but they each have their own process (different radios, bumped, read the ops and you'll find everything you need there). We do have a locked bootloader, but the great devs here have worked around our with no issues.
Hello everybody,
I am totally new with the unlocking bootloader/rooting process (except for my Memopad 7 ME572C that I rooted just by using an .apk). So I hope my question won't look to stupid and that it's not already answered. I browsed the guide thread which was a great help !
I understood the main process, unlocking bootloader, then every step to get to the root but here is the question :
I couldn't find any CWM recovery (listed here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/development/xt10xx-philz-touch-t2612149) that would be compatible with my device. Here is the information about my phone :

If no dedicated CWM recovery is avalaible, would another do the job ?
Thanks !
Nearly all the root processes for a 2013 X with unlocked bootloader suggests using TWRP.
Download the latest TWRP Recovery from -> http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/234 (under the Download-Fastboot heading)
Hey Waxa93!
Did you ever get your Moto XT1052 Rooted? I've got the same phone on 4.4.4 and am pretty confused as to whether our bootloader is even unlockable?

Yes, you should be able to unlock the XT1052 bootloader.

Thanks a lot KidJoe! I actually have a vague memory of reading that post quite some time ago and chickening out due to the warranty void. Think it's time to take the plunge. Thanks again!
Is the stock recovery from the pure edition universal between variants?
I have the XT1093 from U.S. Cellular & I want to flash the stock recovery for my current version of Android (5.0.2). This is so I can OTA to 5.1. The firmware files for 5.0.2 I have found for my variant have odd files that I do not recognize & I do not see a recovery img among them.

Here is the full firmware for your device. It will have the recovery inside:

Thanks. I downloaded that file before I posted op. I do not see a recovery img in it. I am still wanting to know if I can use the pure edition stock recovery for my XT1093 variant.
EDIT: File works

See pics. After unlocking I get a custom Android boot screen and the phone will not read any SIM. Appreciate if someone knows how to reverse this. Running Android 5.0 (can't root, install custom recovery, flash, or update from external storage).

WTH?
Did you unlock the bootloader?

No. AT&T and Verizon lock the bootloader starting with Android 5. I did find that the baseband version is "unkown", which is why the radio is not working or reading a SIM. See picture.
Hmmm
So your ril got corrupted some how is what it looks like to me.
What is "ril" the acronym for?
In any event, where can I get a stock 5.0 or higher ROM that I can hopefully flash from my sd card. All I'm seeing is 4.4.2. Apparently, the AT&T updates are OTA.
Hmmm
I'm out of town right now and can't find one on xda. Try sammobile.com. Don't try ro flash it via sdcard. Odin or adb sideload would be the way to go. I would also suggest rebooting into the built in recovery and resetting it that way.
Thank you. for the suggestions. Before posting the original thread I tried a factory re-set (volume up + home + power), as well as Odin, and neither worked.
AT&T has the bootloader locked tight on Android 5.0 and above.
Yes
That is unfortunately true. Where did you buy the phone? And do you live in the states?
Use Triangle Away apk.
It's US stock, original AT&T device. Worked fine with the exception of poor battery life after the 5.0 OTA upgrade untilit was unlocked.
I just recieved my imported AT&T s6 active and I'm super pleased by the phone!
The phone came with 5.1.1 preloaded and I'm assuming the bootloader is locked.
I've heard root is only available for 5.0 and root is a MUST for me can I downgrade with Odin and root?
Also does locked bootloader mean no flashing zips, right? Alas, no xposed?
Sorry, no root for you yet. Root only work on 5.0.1 and no downgrade. Thought you not necessarily need custom bootloader to flash zip, in S7 Active topic on XDA they do it through app, but still need root... Switch to s7A until your phone is new, or learn to live without root.

I've been trying to follow a method described in other forums and mentioned by many other xda users, but once I re flash stock firmware I don't have root access.
I suspect my problem is when running "ROOT_FIX.bat" having my phone on recovery.

I've no idea how to assess this.
Maybe this root method was just intended to be temporary for IMEI and CSC purpouses?
The forum I followed wasn't very explicative.
