[Q] Difference between Dev, Unlocked, and Locked - Moto X Q&A

Are dev and unlocked the same thing, with locked being the obvious "bootloader locked" state? Or is dev the Google developer edition, and unlocked is the regular Moto X with an unlocked bootloader?

Dev edition has an unlockable bootloader without losing your warranty, while a couple carrier devices (not AT&T or VZW) have unlockable bootloaders at the cost of your warranty. "unlocked" phones are carrier unlocked and are not locked to a specific carrier.

You don't have to unlock the bootloader to use it on att. Unlocking the bootloader just give you options for a custom recovery and flashing roms, etc.
The unlocked version is just that. You can put any gsm Sim card you want in it and it will work. LTE will vary according to the carrier you put it on with regards to frequencies used.

Yeah, I wanted to know if could also unlock the boot loader because the att model is unlockable. But a T-Mobile can have an unlocked bootloader and if it is unlocked carrier as well then you could have a non developer custom moto x with unlocked boot loader on att. Just curious if it us possible.
To answer your question: yes, you can unlock the bootloader. Doing so will void your warranty unless you buy the developer edition though.

It depends on which xt1058 it is. If it's the at&t variant, u cannot unlock the bootloader. If it's any other non-us carrier, u can unlock the bootloader...

For the Developer Editions Moto X, and some carrier editions (Like T-Mobile, Sprint and others), Motorola freely gives away the BootLoader Unlock codes when requested On Motorola's Web SIte. In the case of the Non-Developer Editions, it voids their warranty to request the code.
I'm not going to go into the reasons why, but Moto does NOT give out the bootloader unlock code for the Retail and Moto Maker X for Verizon, ATT and a few other carriers.
That is why you will see people ask what carrier.
One last note...
IF you get a 2013 X for ATT or Verizon, AND the phone is still on 4.4.2 or lower AND the bootloader is NOT 30.B7, you can use Sunshine to unlock the bootloader.
NOTE: once the phone has 4.4.2, 4.4.3 or 4.4.4 on it, you can NOT Safely downgrade it!!! And there is no way to downgrade the bootloader (even on Dev Edition models).
thanks i got the XT1058 ATT model but i am having bootloader BO.4 which is a good sign and i have android 4.4.2 so i can unlock with sunshine root. thanks for replying
Raj
you saved me form lots of regret my friend, i will keep cancelling updates until i can pay for sunshine. i have boot loader 30.b4 thanks a lot for your suggestion
Is there no other way to unlocked BL XT1058 ?
My previous phone is dead, but the data was backup via TitaniumBackup.
Without unlocked bl, i can not root... Without root, i can't restore my data via TitaniumBackup
*sigh* I guess i bought the wrong phone?

Correct. If you have an ATT XT1058, Sunshine was the only option to unlock the bootloader. And to use it, you needed to be on 4.4.2 or lower, and never had 4.4.4 or higher on your phone.
IF you have a Rogers Canada XT1058 or other non-ATT XT1058, you should be able to get your bootloader unlock code directly from Moto's web site.

My ATT XT1058 is on lollypop.
And i read its dangerous to downgrade my os.
Hmm... dead end for me, so far...

What are my options with a simfree, locked bootloader AT&T 1058 moto X?

I got a used sim-free AT&T moto x 1058 (2013) 1058. it has Android 4.4.4 and a 30.B7 (sha-bae5e20, 2014-6-23 18:44:49) locked bootloader.
I am not a AT&T user and don't like the fact that I have their bloatware on my phone and that I am totally depended on them to update my phone.
I went to Motorola official website to try and unlock my bootloader like I did in the past with devices I purchased directly from Motorola and got a massage saying "your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking"
So what are my options to unlock my bootloader?
As for your options with the locked bootloader, you have none, period. Nothing will unlock it because the AT&T variant is not one that's capable of being bootloader unlocked (a requirement set by AT&T afaik) with any bootloader other than the original one (30.07 iirc) and running a build before 4.4.
So, you have a Moto X that potentially could be carrier unlocked to use with another cellular provider but that is only possible if your IMEI doesn't start with 35321 because those apparently can't be without a lot of hassles if at all) but that's it.
I actually just got a Moto X from Motorola as a replacement exchange - it was Android 4.2.2 with bootloader B0.07 which was the original one and I could pretty much do anything with it I wanted but I wasn't going to pay the $25 for Sunshine (which would unlock the bootloader, tested and verified). I never really had intentions of keeping the Moto X anyway so I went ahead and did the updates which of course ruined that original pristine state.
Your option is to sell the XT1058 and buy a XT1053

Not eligible to unlock BL for ATT MotoX

I just get my moto X 2014, when I try to unlock the bootloader it says your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking.
My CID is 0x001
On motorola forum they said that AT&T devices are not unlockable
Then I just don't understand why there are so many mod, flashable ZIP on XDA for ATT XT1097
It is unlockable, how to you flash a TWRP to flash them

Only the 1097 from AT&T cannot be unlocked. All the other 1097 models can be unlocked which is why there is mods, roms and twrp for those.
Sorry, but you can't unlock, flash twrp, nor use custom roms on the AT&T model.
