[Q] Difference between Dev, Unlocked, and Locked

Are dev and unlocked the same thing, with locked being the obvious "bootloader locked" state? Or is dev the Google developer edition, and unlocked is the regular Moto X with an unlocked bootloader?
Dev edition has an unlockable bootloader without losing your warranty, while a couple carrier devices (not AT&T or VZW) have unlockable bootloaders at the cost of your warranty. "unlocked" phones are carrier unlocked and are not locked to a specific carrier.

You don't have to unlock the bootloader to use it on att. Unlocking the bootloader just give you options for a custom recovery and flashing roms, etc.
The unlocked version is just that. You can put any gsm Sim card you want in it and it will work. LTE will vary according to the carrier you put it on with regards to frequencies used.

Yeah, I wanted to know if could also unlock the boot loader because the att model is unlockable. But a T-Mobile can have an unlocked bootloader and if it is unlocked carrier as well then you could have a non developer custom moto x with unlocked boot loader on att. Just curious if it us possible.
To answer your question: yes, you can unlock the bootloader. Doing so will void your warranty unless you buy the developer edition though.

AT&T locked bootloader question

Ok, I have the att moto x with the locked boot loader. I was talking to my friend and he said att will release your unlock code for free. I'm wondering is that the same thing as the bootloader unlock code or is that just the code so I can move on to another carrier? Is it the same thing?

I think he might be referring to carrier unlock but not boot loader

ATT will supply the SIM unlock code (aka carrrier unlock code, and other names)... This is different than the Bootloader Unlock code which ATT will not provide.
If you want to unlock your bootloader, the Chinese 3rd party (there are threads in the general section, offers unlock codes for Verizon and ATT models.

can i unlock bootloader if the carrier is locked? or unlock network first?

Hi guys i just got the P20 pro, CLT-L04(c69).
its from a carrier called telcel.
i bought this phone used at 2 months old.
so i did not buy it directly from carrier.
i think its network locked. as it has all the telcel branding throughout the eui
can i still unlock bootloader if the carrier is locked? or do i need to get it unlocked from the network first?
my ultimate goal is to unlock bootloader , root it and install up to date firmware. maybe Pie if im lucky.
i dont want to have to spend money for both network unlock and bootloader unlock if i dont have to.
if anyone can tell me if i can just unlock bootloader?
Well asking questions is useless. The P20pro thread is dead by the looks of it.

You can unlock the boot loader without unlocking the carrier.

ATT pixel 5 (ROOT)

Can the ATT pixel 5 be rooted? I was thinking of picking 1 up.
Thanks
Nope. It's carrier locked

I don't have one to test, but being carrier locked does not mean the bootloader is also locked. If you can toggle the bootloader unlock setting within the developer options menu, then you can fully root your device. You just can't insert the SIM card of another carrier into that device.
OEM unlocking is not allowed on carrier locked devices.

But once the carrier is unlocked you still have a locked bootloader.
