I do not have a rooted phone, nor do I ever intend to root so please keep that in mind when responding. Thank you.
My question is this, if I disable every single 'contextual' thing that the Moto X does; for example: twisting wrist for camera, active display, motorola assist, touchless control, etc.
Will the low power processors still run, scanning for detection (sensor pings, accelerometer checks, microphone still listening) if everything is disabled?
Just trying to figure it out because say I wanted to disable everything to squeeze out some battery life, would I be doing it in vain or would it actually shut down those 2 extra processors (language processing/contextual processing) if I am not using any of the services?
I am by no means a phone genius, but I am a pretty smart computer nerd and don't know if anyone has insights about how the phone kernel actually handles this situation. All my research on this matter just finds the very bland and generalized description of the X8 and just what it does.
From my understanding of the X8 soc the 2 extra low power cores are always on. They were also designed to be as power efficient as possible. So disabling all of the apps it handles might not do much in way of power saving. However, if you were to disable all of the moto services I believe the 2 cores will still run but use up a lot less clock cycles since there wouldn't be anything for them to execute. But doing so will also make the moto x that much less of a phone. Its a nice experiment there's no harm in it. Most of the moto apps are allowed to be disabled. If no battery improvements then just revert everything you disabled.

Well I disabled everything but active display and I can say I have seen a massive increase in battery life. So basically even if the processors are low powered they are still powered and taking battery. I'm going to disable active display tonight before charging and go thru a workday and give an update tomorrow. I suspect I will get another increase in battery life. As of now the increase was significant, I normally take my phone off the charger before I go to sleep at midnight, do a restart and check the battery at 8am. I normally have been losing 4% every single night with everything enabled. That's moto connect, Touch less control, active display. With them all disabled my battery stayed at 100% 2 nights in a row so far
I suppose it's all a matter of context. Compared to my Samsung GS3 (Verizon) I'm seeing MASSIVELY better battery life (>2X) without playing any tricks to modify the stock experience. Some if it may be from going from a CDMA base to GSM. With low radio signal CDMA seems to suck down the battery quickly. It always seems difficult to definitively figure out what is really causing high battery drain when it happens.

Thanks for the update.
While you say that your battery has increased in standby time, has it increase in SOT?
Would you mind putting up screenshots of you're battery at 75% 50% 25% ?
Would you be able to make a list of all moto services you disabled while still maintaining the active display feature.
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
Alright, been busy past few days. I will be posting screenshots with screen time starting now (unplugs phone from charger)
This is the list of EVERYTHING I have disabled, I am running un-rooted Moto X Motomaker edition on Verizon.
Disabled:
Active Display
Audio Effects
Caller Name ID
com.motorola.moodles
Device Management
Email
Google Pinyin Input
Google Play Books
Google Play Games
Google Play Magazines
Google Play Movies & TV
Google Play Music
Google+
Hangouts
HP Print Service Plugin
Mobile Hotspot
Moto Care
Motorola Assist
Motorola Checkin
Motorola Connect
Motorola Contextual Services
Motorola DriveActivator
Motorola ID
Motorola Migrate
Motorola SensorHub Updater
Motorola Skip Setup
NFL Mobile
Print Spooler
Sync Service
Touchless Control
Verizon Tones
Verizon Voicemail
VZ Navigator
So today I will been doing my best to take screen shots at 25% increments. If results look promising I will do a factory reset and run everything full stock everything enabled to make a comparison.
Also, I have no WiFi on EVER. I do not use location services either. Basically, my phone is never running anything in the background except vital system processes. Stay tuned for the pics, coming tonight around 11pm CST.
screens
Haven't been using phone so much, here is everything at 75% will be following up today with 50% and hopefully 25% pics
25% battery update
OK for those of you following here is the update with 25%,battery life. After this I will re-enable everything Motorola on my phone and use the x8 mobile system to its fullest capabilities to have a side by side comparison of what exactly goes on as far as battery life is concerned when the 2 contextual cores are being utilized.

Thanks for the updates. While getting 27Hrs of usage is great but SOT is much more important. At 25% you have 2 1/2 hr SOT which I don't find that great, considering you lose so many features. I have always average 3 1/2 hrs SOT at 25% with all moto x features on and Google now without location reporting on and that's on LTE 90% of the time.

I am just curious, how the HECK do you manage to have 3 hours + of SOT at 25% with everything enabled? that blows me away. is your idle time very low? cause honestly my phone idles longer than its being used, i figure if i had my phone on using it nonstop i could pull off 3 hours with 25% battery, but i work alot and its off more than its on, possibly contributing to the lower SOT in my aspect.
ok, used my phone heavy today, these pics show amazing screen time with 60% battery. i really think disabling contextual services helps, i was using youtube and web browsing on 4g LTE heavily today and here are the results
anyone share their thoughts on this?

I'll take pics tonight I don't usually let my phone run down that low. Except when I was trying to test my battery. For a while I wasn't getting good SOT or stand by times. One day android OS ran down my battery and I got pissed off so I sbf back to 4.2.2. Afterwards I let the ota hit the phone did a factory reset after 4.4. When I was setting up my phone I didn't restore anything from play store just did it manually and it has helped. No more high android OS usage.

Thanks a lot mawells! I am pretty much concluding that the difference is so negligible that the battery gains do not out-weigh the features you are missing.
I also noticed that you are using backup assistant plus? its an annoying little bugger of an app, have you any way to disable/remove that feature? i am stuck with verizon and i cant seem to stop backup assistant plus from running.

No there's no way to disable it I hate it myself. If you are rooted you can freeze it through titanium backup. But as long as its not syncing its not really doing much.

I put together a list of things that helped me get 7 hours SoT on a charge (Wifi). Edit: 6.75hrs SoT. Edit2: 7.75hrs SoT No root access or modifications needed for these.
This is my first Android device and I wanted to share some of the things I've learned mostly reading these forums. It also annoys me to read users complain about their battery life but are unwilling to do anything about it. I hope this will help people to realize the full potential of their phone.
Llama, Tasker, etc: Automate everything you can to save battery. It can be more efficient to run a line of code then to tap the screen.
Force stop all the programs you don't really need running in the background in Settings > Apps > Running. Basically act like your own Greenify. Or use Greenify.
Wakelocks: Track the "Awake Time" of suspicious applications and services and either reboot or force stop them if necessary.
Disable Google applications you don't need. Myself I disabled Chrome, Gmail and News & Weather.
Disable: touch and typing vibration. I have type sounds On and touch sounds Off because those really add up on speaker.
Disable: NFC, Bluetooth, Wireless printing etc. Automate to run only when needed for no lost functionality.
Wifi: Automate to turn on only for Wifi zones of your choice. No lost functionality. Wifi always scanning: Off.
Notifications: Apps and games can send you unnecessary notifications. Disable them. Enable only what you need.
Hotword detection: off. This specifically drains SoT and saves only a single screen tap.
Widgets: These drain battery without ever showing up individually on the stats page. Silent killers.
Lux: Another silent killer even when set "On Wake only" and "Slow". Just by disabling Lux lite and a once-daily updated Feedly widget I noticed significant SoT gains. Using Llama to automate brightness is more efficient.
Speaker vs Headphones: The speaker seems to use more battery.
Two apps that can help you monitor your battery and phone with no root requirement:
Play Store Link.
Current Widget - Set to update manually on your home screen for minimal power draw. Check your charge and discharge rates along with battery temperature.
Play Store Link.
S Tools+ - This just popped up in the XDA apps section the other day. Detailed information on CPU states, Deep Sleep time and ALL your sensors, nicely graphed and very polished including transparent nav bar. Other than real time graphing of sensors this shouldn't be much of a drain.
Speaker vs headphones....what?? Care to explain how? I'm saying the difference is negligible.

Yeah, you really don't need to do all that to save battery. Just don't turn on data until you need it and you'll get a week of standby on a single charge with this phone, and a full day of usage (or more depending on how much you use it).

I seem to drain more battery listening to music with speakers over headphones but its hard to tell and probably negligible, as you say.

Not sure if serious or not. That functionality is enabled on the phone by default and you'll see many people struggling to get over 3 hours SoT like that.
There are even reviews which seem to think topping 3 hours SoT is some kind of miracle. Most will answer that by saying: "you need root and flash x ROM with y kernel".

Its far too convenient! Does llama have the same exact function built in?

Gotta agree. The vast majority of users charge overnight and with my own setup - currently on stock rom and stock kernel (though I'm currently bouncing between that and Franco to see which I prefer) with pretty much everything always on (NFC, WiFi, data, location access, though I disable notifications from the likes of Facebook, Twitter, etc. just because I'm not that invested in social networks that I'd want constant updates) I can get 3+ hours SOT - which I'd assume is more than enough for most people. Greenify is to thank for most of my battery savings.
But don't get me wrong - for those who do need more SOT than that, the OP is fantastic advice, and I'll be coming back to this thread when I'm on holiday etc. and won't be able to charge every night.
great tips
kuddos to the OP
very helpful tips...hotword detection remains off for me most the time
as i work in a noisy environment and hardly make use of it unless im relaxed in office/ home

don't mind the haters. they're just mad that they only get 3 hours of screen on time and 10% battery drain per hour when deep sleeping
they would rather complain than take control of their device and if you dont use your own phone exactly like they use their phone, then they call foul and tell you that your results don't matter. they say the same thing to people that use their device like an ipod touch(by putting it in airplane mode).
haters will always hate

I think it's just really hard to get good auto brightness on this phone right now due to the sensor. Using Lux Lite didn't help me very much since I was bouncing between very low and extremely high brightness but I imagine the full version could be more useful.
Llama is an extremely light weight application and uses only 6MB of RAM, the lowest of any service I've seen. I think it could add to Android System drain but using Cell Tower locations and properly set up conditions I don't think it will by much.
Thanks for the supportive comments. I really just want to help and have no hidden agenda here. We've known for months now that the N5 can get 8.9 hours SoT web browsing on WiFi and 6.9 hours web browsing on LTE. Of course Anandtech used perfect, non-root conditions with airplane mode On, Gnow off and zero apps or widgets; something that even I am unwilling to put up with. We can still strive to get as close to those numbers as possible.

Generally speaking SOT depends on what you are doing.
I've been down this road and can get SOT times on any phone pushing 5 hours.
To say no loss of functionality is wrong. You state to kill half the apps that I use so that is a LOF to me.
The secret, well not really, is the brightness and network reception.
Turning down the brightness and getting max signal/bandwidth will affect the battery more than turning off apps. Remember the rule of thumb the longer the phone has to stay on for a wakelock the more the battery drains and that is SOT and sleep. What I mean is you'll drain your battery faster connected to a dialup internet connection than fiber at 1gig.... It's all about bandwidth and high signal strength and screen brightness.
Not hating just saying that no one person can say this will give you X number of hours of SOT when everyone's signal/bandwidth environment is different.
So having come from Verizon's Note 4 and averaging up to 24hrs on battery running pretty much the same setup as I do now on my T-Mobile Note 4 minus the "Root" & "Custom Rom" abilities. Otherwise, same apps, accounts, usage pattern, ect...
I am on an ongoing battle still after several complete wipes, different Roms including just running STOCK ANK4 and trying to figure out what is going on. Phone defect? Battery defect?
Anyhow, Ever since changing over to both the T-Mobile Note 4 & their service, my experience has been a rather miserable 14 to 18hrs MAX battery life and going from 4hrs screen on time to around 2 1/2 w/ T-Mobile.
Which now leads me yet to wonder something else. I believe I started using the "FingerPrint" security feature since switching to T-Mobile to unlock the device. Has anyone experienced a similar "Battery longevity" issue using said feature before I continue troubleshooting and chasing my own tail on this? Of course I will eventually test this theory anyhow, but figured I would throw it out there.
Also, Open to any suggestions.
Just some things I have already done along with the above mentioned:
- Utilized the App "Greenify" & donation full version to greenify many apps including "Google Play Services".
- Set up Profiles which I toggle via "PhoneWeaver" to turn off data when on Wi-Fi which consists of 90% of my day as I'm Wi-Fi connected both at home and work.
- Of course always turn off that option within Wi-Fi settings to untick "Always Scan".
- Went into "Google" app settings and turned off about everything I can find in there and it's now rather complex settings.
- Turned off most syncing of my 2 "Google" accounts to only one having anything other than Email Sync active such as the Calendar, Contacts, and Apps Sync. - Again, my 1 Google Account I only have set to sync Email and nothing else.
Sure I forgot some things I've tried but again, I am open to any/all suggestions. I admit, I bought my T-Mobile via Swappa. All seemed well as per their checklist of the obvious things to check regarding the phone's operation. Kind of stuck here now and wondering if my device is simply defective and/or the battery.
Also of note: Android System is always by far the largest contributor to my battery drain and exceeds even Screen-On time by around 10%. But then again, don't really know if that means anything or not since even before switching carriers and the transition from "JellyBean" to "KitKat" on my previous S4, Android System became a forever battery hog for me.
Just never had a top end device such as this in past years barely get me through a complete day: Work & Home time. I don't consider myself a heavy user. Barely even "Moderate" many days as I mainly text during my lunch break, otherwise phone is pretty much idle. And say 2 phone calls of aprox 20 min.s each during commute time. Yea, something just isn't right. :crying:
I have noticed 3 things that were hurting battery bad.
1.) Use the Google play services with the 030 extension. I get way better battery life on it 5% to 10% increase in battery life. Link below:
http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google...ices-7-0-99-1809214-030-android-apk-download/
2.) If you are not using maps or other location services turn your location off. Literally a 20%+ increase in battery from this alone.
3.) Toggle your NFC. Something in Android 4.4.4 sometimes causes your NFC to wake lock. If you turn it on then turn it off one time it normally fixes is.
I attached my battery stats below.
It with about 2 hours of screen on time.

Thanks for the reply and suggestions! I just checked and I am currently running Google Play Services V 7.0.97 (1791429-030).
A couple things I have done meanwhile since my OP which have had "some" noticeable positive effects on my battery duration, yet still no where near what you have posted are:
Within "Google Settings" app:
- Account History ( I have "turned off or rather paused" ALL the Activity/Info/History settings here - All 5)
Regarding my 2nd, basically "Junk mail" Gmail Account:
- Now have ALL "Sync" turned off within, including the syncing of email, which I now simply check manually to update.
Greenify:
- Revisited, and added a bunch more apps and pretty much "Greenified" ALL Samsung related entries/services/ect...
So far I have increased to achieving up to about 3 1/2 hrs Screen time (Gained 1 hr) & a few more hours of real time battery longevity as I can now achieve close to 20hrs before needing charge.
Still feel I have some troubleshooting to go. Oh, I actually have the NFC Service "Greenified" to. So far haven't really noticed a problem with "Deep Sleep" either according to CPU SPY pro.
Yep, Have always had the Location Service to OFF, not even using the so called "Battery saving" selection with it. Such a pity to have to cripple such things but it's a trade off I guess in achieving a full day's battery vs.s using the features with this phone for some reason more-so than past devices it seems. At least in my case. :silly:
So I have a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 4, I got it back in October so yes I have "broken in" the battery. I have checked out several other posts and tried pretty much everything. I've turned off bluetooth, NFC, any and pretty much all useless Samsung features (smart stay, turn over to mute, multi-window), I've got a black wallpaper on for both my home and lock screens, I have greenify AND DU Battery Saver, I ONLY ever use data as I have unlimited data and my building has a shared wifi network which I don't trust, I have tweaked Sync in the settings menu to only sync crucial info from all my accounts (google, facebook, email, whatsapp, etc.). So far the BIGGEST battery drainer is Android System. It is always number one. I've had days where I've decided to push the screen-on time to its limits and have used it nonstop. Screen consumption only ever gets close even if I use my phone nonstop Android System is the biggest offender. I've tried keeping power saving mode on 24/7 but that has not seemed to help at all. I've disabled S Health, S Voice, and several other apps I never use like Google Play Newsstand. I am at the end of my rope I despise this phone for its claim to great battery life but its absolute GARBAGE real world performance. I consider myself lucky to get over 3.5 hours SOT. At this rate I might as well have an iPhone 5. I have no idea what to do.
Here's a list summarizing the things I've done to improve battery life:
Bluetooth off
NFC off
Multi-Window off
All email sync set to Manual
Sync for every account adjusted to isync only crucial info
Pitch Black Wallpaper
Power Saving Mode (Not Ultra Power Saving) switched on about 90% of the time
Using Greenify on all Power-Hungry apps
Closing most apps upon finishing using them
Using DU Battery Saver in order to monitor battery activity
Never use Wifi
No Multi-Window
No Touch Sensitivity
No Side Key Panel
Wifi Calling feature disabled (I never use wifi anyway)
No Download Booster
No Smart Stay
Animations switched off via the Developer Options
Tried using another battery (similar if not identical results)
I'm still getting at the very best if I'm somehow on a miraculous streak of good luck that day: 4 hours of Screen-On Time. It is ALWAYS Android System usually followed by Android OS and then an app or two before Screen (because my SOT is so pathetically terrible)
I love this phone, the display is beautiful, the camera is fantastic, it runs seamlessly (on Nova Launcher that is), BUT I despise the battery life. It has made me resent this phone and I'm seriously considering switching to the iPhone 6 Plus as that has comparable battery life and with it running iOS I doubt the OS would destroy my battery the way Android has been lately. What do you guys do to get such good battery life from this phone? I've tried everything I know!! Please can you help guys?
I'm also attaching screenshots from one of the BETTER days.
I would consider rooting and installing a custom rom, poprock I would recommend for keeping touchwiz.
I don't know.. maybe your battery is the problem.. When I was on stock I had the same issue, but i varied in a weird way. With poprock, battery life has been amazing.

A few people have this issue. I really think it has to do with a corrupt file that was flashed. Maybe no fix but a new phone. If part of the pit file got damaged no fix but samsung.

the battery distribution and the SOT is what I usually get too.. but the usage of 7 hours is too little. I always get over a day..

I'd already seen your thread. It wasn't too helpful for me unfortunately because I'm not rooted. Half the terms you guys were using "Odin'd, pit file, etc." I don't understand at all. I'm running Nova Launcher on this phone. Just typing this comment my battery has dipped from 78% to 74% this is ****ing ridiculous I'm sick of this **** phone I might just switch to iPhone. I'm done with battery raping Android.
I'm in the process of fixing this. I think I may have figured something out. I have been slowly working through freezing applications to figure out what is causing the battery drain. I've made some progress. I really think it is an issue with lollipop system apps.
I am now having a slight dragon from cell standby, but the Android System drain is getting capped. Been in this single charge for 17 hrs and Android system is only 7%
Once I get a bit more firm information I will post my findings.

Some suggestions: check out your Google settings first. Disable Google Now and uncheck their location monitoring settings. Also freeze Facebook (use the website instead). Finally ou can disable sync altogether for a while in case other apps are hammering away through it. Test your battery under each of those conditions. Good luck, be patient, take your time. If your battery is good eventually you'll get to the bottom of it. Use Better Battery Stats to monitor. Most people get fantastic battery life. I rarely use 40% in a day. Over night (8 hours) I lose 2% - that's also a really good thing to watch. If you are draining badly at night, you have major wake locks occurring.

Err. i literally had facebook, tinder, syncing my accounts manually using toggle, and was still getting 7hrs of SOT.

Thanks I'll try some of that but my problem is that I shouldn't have to do all of this crap! God it seems like we HAVE to revert these superphones back to pre 2000 dumb phones in order to get any kind of a decent battery performance from them. Samsung just haaaaaad to make the screen 2K. If they'd kept 1080p it might've been better! I might as well just switch to the iPhone 6 plus if I want ZERO functionality from my big screen phone. God I hate this Note 4 and I'm so jealous of people who don't do anything like this and still get 5-7 hours of SOT with their Note 4's. I'm beginning to think they're full of it honestly.

Nope. Either replace the phone or wipe and start over since u not rooted very little help.
If you're not rooted do this:

I am have the same issue with battery drain from Android System. I have see that issues is there when WiFi is enable the battery drains faster. When WiFi is off and using mobile data it drains normal.

If you click on the Android Systems within the Battery usuage section. It will give you more detail, and show you what services, or packages are using it. The. You can take it from there.

I see u play a lot of games I am assuming. How much? Games eat a lot of battery.
I recently picked up a Moto G 2014 for a family member since it was on sale and I'm having a bit of trouble, at least I think I am. This person hardly uses the phone, doesn't make calls every day but putters around on it, listens to music occasionally. Real basic use stuff. The battery only seems to last a day. In trying to diagnose/troubleshoot it without rooting or voiding warranty, it seems like it's draining excessively. Just sitting with all the apps closed on the home screen, it's burning up about 180-210 mA according to Ampere. Now, my LG G2 reliably uses 30mA on the home screen without apps running. Apples & oranges, I know but shouldn't the value on the Moto G be lower? Does anyone else use Ampere and have similar readings? With the little use this phone sees, I'd imagine people that use it regularly have to charge multiple times a day to keep the phone alive and I can't see the Motorola engineers doing that. I've tried closing and disabling apps that aren't used and there doesn't seem to be much that goes on. So I'm not sure if this is normal or if something's wrong. I have done all the OTA updates and also tried a factory reset, it made no difference. I'm tempted to root & install the official CM but if there's something wrong with the phone, I want to get it fixed through Motorola first.
Any ideas for this Moto newbie? Thanks in advance.
Here's some screenshots of the battery stats in case anyone's curious:

I'm getting 160-170 mA after clearing all the recent apps with CM 12.1. But battery life is not bad at all. About 1 day with 5+hours of SoT or 2-3days with 3+ hours of SoT. So I don't really care.
Ps.: I don't think that 30mA is enough for phone to run with screen ON. Maybe in sleep mode.. 30mA is way too small value. I also found an article about power consumption of smartphones: http://arxiv.org/pdf/1212.1896.pdf

That sounds significantly better than what my Moto G is getting. I doubt the phone sees 2 hours of SoT in a day but the battery barely lasts a day. I'm hoping it's just hoggy apps and that CM will clean things up.

I think you're right actually. Looking at the Ampere stats, it shows 30mA as the max draw, even after opening several apps and running. I thought this seemed right for idle but it's always stuck there under load.
Actually I had a similar problem with my Moto G on stock. Did you use GPS? Because when I turn on and off gps on my phone it remains ON and drains my battery pretty fast, until I restart my phone. So whenever I use GPS I have to turn it off in settings and restart my phone in order to turn it off.
OK so if u really want a decent battery life. Just turn of sync, location and keep scanning In advanced WiFi settings.
Since its showing Google services as culprit, turning sync off would probably solve the issue.

Hi guys,
Have been using my new note 9 after replacing it with my s8+. So far it's a pretty good phone. One of the primary reasons for me to get was the large battery such that it will last m even more longer. But I have been noticing poor performance everyday. At the end of the day, I am bleeding to 10%. The s8+ was given to my wife and I compared her usage vs mine and for same amount of screen time I ended up at 30% and she was at 67%. I have less amount of apps installed than hers and she is heavy user of all social media apps. I have been observing my battery performance and what seems to be draining the most is the Android system, Google play services and Android OS. They claim all together half of my battery life. I noticed that there was an update right after I setup my note 9 initially and not sure if that could have caused it. Is there any way I can reverse it to see if it was the update? I have already tried wiping out the cache and shutting down all background activities on those items and blocked notification on pretty much most of the apps. How is everyone else's experience on the battery? I forgot to capture screen shot but will do it at the end of today.

I'm chiming in because I'm currently using the Note 9 ATT variant. My battery life has been pretty decent, but it's tough because the usage and even my "all day" and your "all day" can differ so much. Are you using 1080 resolution or did you set it to the higher resolution? I'm also running the ATT update you mentioned. But I'm also using wifi calling, not sure if that hurts or helps battery life, I haven't used it on my previous unlocked international HTC devices, so I'm just starting to experiment.
Have you enabled any of the battery optimization?
You can go to settings/device maintenance and click on battery on the bottom. I have it set to off in the "presets" but at the lower part of the page you can see "app power monitor" and see the app's power usage per hour. If you've got some that are higher, you can click on just those apps to check them on the list, and then click "save power" and see if your battery life gets better.
Possibly if you're using always on display you can modify that, if it's not something you really need and have already addressed.
Thanks for your reply. I am not running any battery optimization. I wanted to try default. Yes, I looked at battery usage per app and don't find anything bothering or consuming extra battery. Resolution is set to 1080 and always on display is off. Also. Wifi calling is on at all times. I am not sure if I am expecting too much but after using s8+ for over a year I was expecting much decent battery life with less than half of the apps installed on s8+ and having a bigger battery on this beast. I will need to find out how to lower down those Android system, os and Google play services.
My device is unlocked but on AT&T's network and I'm running my screen at max resolution and close to max brightness. My screen and AOD are always one and two with the O/S running a distant third or fourth sometimes fifth. If Google Play Services is consuming that much battery it is constantly running in the background trying to sync or pull data which it's not getting. Focus on that application and you should be fine, my phone is typically at greater than 50% at the end of the day and I use it all the time.

How do you find which app or service is running in background which is trying to pull or sync data?
Just a note, I had to drop t-mobile to make a point with them for screwing with my account. Houston has good coverage but the network is congested and that is an understatement. My battery life went down on my V20 and my note4 when on ATT's network. Not that the reception was always poor, because it is very poor at my house, but speeds and latency on ATTs LTE were like going back to HSPA. Sometimes it was better to turn off LTE and just put up with the super high latency to get decent speeds on ATT.

Go into settings/apps/Google Play Services/Battery and see what it's been doing. You can restrict the app as well from there I believe, also clear the cache. As I stated I would focus on that app specifically.
My experience was rough when I first got the phone as well. I factory restored with Odin and used ADB to remove all the apps I was not going to use. I then i stalled all my apps and the battery life took a hit again. I'd come home from a 9 hour day of work and be in the 40s. I downloaded betterbatterystats and let it monitor my phone overnight. I found that com.att.iqi was running all the time and constantly causing wake locks. I downloaded package disabler pro and disabled that package. Now when I leave work I am at 75% battery for the past two days. By bed time my phone has been off the charger for 18 hours with about 4 hours screen on time and I'm between 25%-35% which is outstanding. I made a thread with my complaint comparing the battery to my iPhone X and was called a troll because android can do no wrong. In short get betterbatterystats and package disabler pro.
Thanks for this, I was wondering if betterbatterystats would work on my Note 9, but hadn't researched it yet. It's a great app specifically for targeting issues like this, but I've always used it on rooted devices so I didn't recall if it worked on unrooted devices. I'm looking forward to trying it over the next few days and slimming this thing down.

My battery life on the ATT version has been garbage too. I was going to return it, but I missed my 14 day window. Thus far, my S9+ was a better device, but I'm hoping the little bugs get squashed in an upcoming update.
One thing I'm wondering about is Bixby. My battery life seems to be pretty decent with ATT. I don't use Bixby, although I haven't disabled the app, I don't have it set up or signed in.

I actually managed to return mine and got another note 9 thinking that I would try it without doing the first update. Unfortunately that software update thing popped up while I was using the phone and I hit continue by mistake. I am kind of thinking about returning this one and getting the s9 plus if I still have this crappy battery life.

I'm not a battery life hawk, but, there's a few things you can do without crippling your phone (some already mentioned) before throwing in the towel.
1) Go to each app in SETTINGS > APPS > MOBILE DATA & turn off ALLOW BACKGROUND DATA USAGE on apps that have this option & where you're absolutely sure this will not impact something important to your usage.
2) Package Disabler Pro was already mentioned,it's well worth the price of admission. This is where you'll likely see the biggest improvement, surely no one here uses every single feature/app on any phone, force stop & disable what you're not using.
3) Again,I'm not a battery stat ninja,I just use my phone as I see fit, but, others have suggested try using FHD instead of WQHD for screen resolution. I myself use WQHD,but,I'm content with my battery life, however,I'd give it a try if I felt the need.
4) If you have NFC on,turn it off until you need to use it,access to it is quick & easy. I myself do not use NFC,but, even if I did,I can't imagine I'd use it to the point to where I'd leave it on 24/7 for convenience of use.
What's important to your usage is in the eye of the beholder,so,that's the extent of my recommendations for battery recommendations. The few I've mentioned should net some improvement without negatively affecting your routine usage.

I may drop the developer a line, since the app hasn't been updated in a while.
Perhaps there's been some changes in Android 8 that haven't been addressed.

I'm trying to ascertain which one to use. Apparently this app shows all wakelocks whereas better battery stats only shows partial wakelocks, from the small amount of research that I've done.
The dev apparently doesn't respond and has abandoned the app, again from research I've done

I am trying a rundown tomorrow with power save. Just CPU and screen brightness. I left resolution and network usage on. I don't think brightness does much. It is supposed to be -10% but I have trained my auto brightness some and I have been having to turn it up. So I think only speed limiter CPU 70% is at play.
