[Q] How to use google as search engine in IE? - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does any one know if there is any way to set the IE to use Goolge as the search engine? Thank you.

It's possible via a registry tweak, or sometimes (if already configured this way from the factory) in the Settings screen for IE. Unless you have a Samsung phone, though, the registry option is probably not available. Flashing a foreign ROM (one that comes with Google integration) might work, but you also might create more problems.

There's a way to do it on Lumia phones which I would guess doesn't work for other manufacturers...

Diamond new users question/answer guide

to begin with, i want to tell you all how glad i am to have found and be a part of this community which taught and showed me a lot of things on how to configure and set up a decent working version of Windows Mobile. this is my first winmob phone, after having a dozen java/symbian/s60 operated phones.
i chose the HTC over the iPhone mainly because of the huge possibilities of tweaking, but for an inexperienced (WinMobile) user like me, to kick it off in the right way might prove to be harder than at first expected. so i decided to create this topic not only to ask for your help but hopefully to lay down some basic guidelines for all users new to this forum and to WinMob.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
my ROM version is 1.37.401.3 and my Radio version is 1.00.25.03 - that's how i bought it from store.
1. i installed the advanced confing utility but some options there don't work for me (e.g. Show SIM contacts - disable[doesn't work] or X button - close app [same]). why is that ?
2. is it in anyway possible to modify my start menu app list cause it laggs for about 2-3 seconds before opening the huge list i have there
3. what does the Radio version mean ? from what i've read on these forums, i'm thinking it has to do more than with the basic radio app, right ? what exactly does the higher version (.05) improve ?
4. the ROM version - correct me if i'm wrong .. are there official ROM versions from HTC that can be downloaded from their site that work regardless of the tweakings done to the phone? and how are user made ROMs better ? is there anything consistently better than my current version in terms of battery life and performance ?
5. i've read the manual and it says that the win media player supports .avi files yet mine doesn't open one. anything special i need to know of ?
6. what programs can i install apart from those i've found here? say yahoo messenger, if i don't want to use win messenger. and if that's possible, are there appz especially made for winmobile cause i doubt it that an ordinary PC .exe will work the same
7. is there any way to use the camera from the front of the phone for photos?
8. is there no other possibility of turning the phone ON from sleep mode other than the power button ? if not, where's the timer that sets how many seconds pass before entering sleep mode?
9. if i got it right, tomtom7 is a gps navigation program, right? does it work stand-alone? i mean, no external receiver? and does it connect to the internet while in usage ? what about google maps?
10. any other useful programs to recommend other than the ones found within this section of the forum ? i've read about users using Total Comander.. where can i find that ? or is it the normal PC program ?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
i know these are a lot of questions but honestly these were the first things that popped in my mind after using this phone for nearly 5 days now i'll be grateful for whatever answers, advice and solutions you'll be kind enough to provide.
8. Take out the stylus - wakes it up. Just got mine today and found this out by accident. After all - why read the manual??
9. TomTom 6 is the version I bought for my Trinity, and it works just fine on my Diamond. I just chose Com Port 4 for 'other bluetooth receiver' and it works without the need for an external bluetooth GPS receiver. Curiously it turns bluetooth on while TT is running - then turns it off when stopping TT. Does it really need to connect to itself via bluetooth? Any readers got an idea?
domnu' iliescu,
a. go to:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Diamond
and learn a few basics and in special a few therms some "slang"
b. go to:
http://modmydiamond.info/index.php and learn how to hardspl and flash a new ROM.
the "cooked" ROMs are by far better than the original one (the one u have for example). is like buying a car and using a kit to tune it, make it the way you like it. you tweak the motor and you''l get less consumption (more memory and longer battery life), more speed (faster and smoother diamond) and so on. escuse my car analogy but the thing i love even more than my diamond is my car (i wonder, is it really in this order?).
now, my answers to yr question. i might be wrong on some of the answers but there are enough ppl here hapy to correct me..lol
1. there is a high probability that flashing a new ROM will change that (see a.)
2. for sure flashing will solve it.
3. in simple words, the radio is the function that allows you to make calls, use bluetooth or yr gps. connectivity. see my a. for more info.
4. see the beginning of my replay namely, point b.
5. don't know why, again maybe a new ROM will solve this (strange ..)
6. live it to later. there is somewhere here a post regarding applications and programs supported by diamond. first flash new ROM and new radio, get familiar with the device and forget about applications. there are a few "must have" but again, l a t e r .
7. the camera is for video calls. why do u need to used when u have a better (much better) one dedicated to taking pictures?
8. pull out the stylus is my favorite.
regarding "the timer":
- go to settings/system/power/backlight for adjusting the backlight and go to settings/system/power/advanced for what u call "sleep mode". btw, it is in diamond's manual!
9. the diamond has an internal GPS. no need for external (see yr manual again). you can choose between lots of navigation programs. tomtom, igo8 and google maps (never used google maps, maybe somebody else is going to help you). i am using igo8.
10. total commander is somewhere as a cab file in the thread of one of the many ROMs here. i'll look for it or i'll upload mine somewhere.
important!!
read diamond's manual, keep reading in the forum, ask only after you are certain that the answer is not somewhere here (use search function) and read again some more! "invatzatzi! invatzatzi! invatzatzi!
good luck! Noroc!
On point 8, has anyone managed to wake the phone up/bring the screen light back on without pressing the power button or removing the stylus? Pushing the central button or even the home button would be better.

You should install diamond tweak, you'll find it on the forum, for easyier twaeking, it got 40 tweaks incl, and you can easy just disable or enable there.
if you hide sim contacs, it will be reset to show again after a soft reset i think.
4. the ROM version - correct me if i'm wrong .. are there official ROM versions from HTC that can be downloaded from their site that work regardless of the tweakings done to the phone? and how are user made ROMs better ? is there anything consistently better than my current version in terms of battery life and performance ?
Yes there is a new rom out, 1.93, you can download it from htc.com, htc e club, register there, and then register your product when you are logged on, and you should be able to install it.
5. i've read the manual and it says that the win media player supports .avi files yet mine doesn't open one. anything special i need to know of ?
Install TCPMP/core player, .avi, .mpeg etc. works there, best player for movies imo.
7. is there any way to use the camera from the front of the phone for photos?
Yes there is, when you use camera, go on settings and press the icon with 2 cameras on, and it will switch to the camera on the front
10. any other useful programs to recommend other than the ones found within this section of the forum ? i've read about users using Total Comander.. where can i find that ? or is it the normal PC program ?
NoData, tcpmp, S2P(music player), diamond TF3D config, diamond tweaks is some of those i find very good to have.

Esmertec + Opera Mini 4.2 security

I've done searches and I find many answers about making Opera not ask about connecting to the network, but I haven't found anyone mention the other permissions.
I would like to allow Opera Mini (multiple cert. version) the privilege to write data, but when I try to set permissions in jbed (Esmertec 20090416.5.1) the permissions for Read and Write User Data are hard-set to "Never Allow." There is no way to change them. Also, just for the sake of mentioning it, the Net Access permission is set to "Ask" and is editable, but once clicked on, the only selection available is.. "Ask."
I just get frustrated having to use a few different browsers just to do simple things. I would rather just use Mini almost exclusively, instead of having to pop open PIE in order to download a file or save a picture.
FWIW, the registry edit to make fonts larger in PIE also doesn't seem to work on my Fuze with updated stock ROM. But that's probably an issue for a different thread..
Is there a solution to this problem that I missed somewhere?
Thanks in advance.

Omnia2MessagingAppMgr - A simple app to switch btw. Samsung and Native messaging app!

Omnia2MessagingAppMgr v1.0
Hi Friends,
Got my shiny new OmniaPro B7610 3 days ago. Great phone I must say. But I find the Samsung's own messaging app bit too restrictive for me. Plus, on my WM 6.1 stock ROM, phone hang many times after selecting to add contact from phonebook. On the Internet, i found a few registry entries that can enable the default messaging app, but due to the way Samsung has designed its MMS application, you cannot use MMS functionality if you use the default messaging application.
Now, MMS is not something people use everyday AFAIK. So I decided to write a small utility around the above mentioned registry entries to make this process easy. So, here it is, my app, Omnia2MessagingAppMgr, for all of you. It allows to quickly switch between the two applications without the hassle of digging into registry every time. I've been using this for 1.5 days, and its doing its job fine. But as there is always scope for improvement, your suggestions are welcome.
Since writing to privileged registry areas from .NET CF apps requires signing the app with a digital certificate (paid or the SDK ones) and then install those on the users device, i skipped the process. I instead have used the excellent Task Manager / Registry editor by DotFred available here. I hope he wont have any problem with this, as I am not selling this for monetary gains. But if he has, by any chance, he can contact me in this thread and I will remove this app and recode it.
Cheers!
Nice! I will try it later today

hey thanks i alwaysgo tothe registry to do this manually and well i was abou to create the app to do it thanks!
@charly_mx: My pleasure. Actually the registry path is a bit cumbersome as first you need to go and change the value and then kill tmail.exe and restart messaging. This app makes it easy by doing these two tasks. Good for someone who do it in routine.
@all: BTW, I am thinking of adding the functionality to enable default windows contact suggestion and t9 dictionary when the default messaging app is enabled. I'm thinking of giving a checkbox for this. Any views on this guys?
Thanks alot
Hi! Sumit
can you please add some more functionality to ur app for switching the messaging app in omnia
I would like to use quick switch buttons for--
*default settings visible/hide
*disabling samsung dialer
*enable/disable touchviz
*soft reset
Hope you would entertain this request & develop something for us
Thanks
Yeah! Thanx, very useful app, thx a lot!
Well you can always change it manually in win mo...

[Q] Activate javascript in IE10 mobile?

Nokia Lumia 920
I am having a problem with a mobile version of one website on my Windows Phone: The home page loads and displays correctly, but when you touch a link, a "server or DNS cannot be found" - error is shown. However, after hitting "refresh", the page addressed by the link is displayed fine. This is very annoying, so I reported that behavior to the web master of the site.
The suggested solutions that came in response were two:
- allow cookies all the time (I changed that setting, but it did not fix the issue)
- make sure that java scripting is enabled in the Internet Explorer
While in the regular version of IE you can adjust this setting easily through the respective menu, I couldn't find any option in the Windows Phone system or in the options of IE mobile to adjust java scripting.
Questions:
1. Can these settings be changed at all?
2. What are the java script settings in IE mobile by default?
Many thanks
Joerg
First of all, "JavaScript" - one word - is the language commonly used in websites. Java (which is not scripted, although in old versions it was interpreted much the way scripts are) is occasionally also used on the web, but very rarely.
Windows Phone supports JavaScript, and this support cannot be turned off in the browser to the best of my knowledge. Apps can turn it off within their internal WebView controls, but in IE it is always on.
Possibly a silly suggestion, but have you tried rebooting the phone? After that, my next suggestion would be trying the mobile site in IE10 on the desktop, probably using the Developer Tools to spoof the WP8 IE10 user agent string.

Yes, I tried rebooting - to no avail. Opening the site in IE10 on the desktop does not work, because it automatically detects the browser and switches to the regular (instead of the mobile) site.
Meanwhile, I have encountered the same issue with more mobile sites: clicking on links causes an error. This error does not occurr when you open the site e.g. in Safari on an Ipad.

I take it you're not overly familiar with how web browsers (and servers) work. I can try figuring out what the problem is if you let us know what the problematic site is, though.
Hello guys ... I dont know if this is the place to post my problem but its the only one that is close to what I have as an issue... So .. I have a problem with some active buttons in some sites, when I log in the site there are little active buttons on the top of the page ( account, community, forum, etc. ) so when I try to click on those buttons the phone ( lumia 920 ) just selects the text and gives me the option to copy it. I have few android devices and there is no such issue with them, I dont know if this is connected with the java script or flash or what ever ... I just need some help if there is a fix for this. THX in advance and have a happy new year :good::good::good:
If possible, tap off the text but still on the button (zoom in if you need to). You could also try tapping more quickly, or alternatively tap-and-hold and see if it offers you the context menu for links.

(Q) Internet Sharing registry settings

Does any one know the registry settings to enable internet sharing?
There's a small collection of them, what isn't working about it on your phone? If it's something like the mobile operator permission check, then yeah, we can bypass that.

There are a number of threads about Internet Sharing and about registry tweaking. The requirement for tethering to be enabled on your account is checked by a mobile operator-specific DLL that is used by ICSSVC (the Internet Connection Sharing SerViCe). There's a registry value that tells the phone what DLL to load, or whether to load any. If you don't tell it to use any, it defaults to assuming you have access.
There are a number of ways to make registry changes on your phone. You can flash a custom CSC (not a full ROM, though if you look for "custom ROM" on the dev&hacking subforum, you'll find stuff about it), or you can edit the registry directly using a hijacked app chamber, or you can interop-unlock (itself requiring a registry edit, so you probably need to use the chamber hack unless you're on an old version of Samsung's firmware) and unblock RPC, then use the RPCComponent.

"and unblock RPC, then use the RPCComponent. " I think this is the part I need to be educated on.

That is one (of several) methods for editing the registry. It can write more places than the other methods, but only works on Strings and Integers (DWORDs) and is only usable on Samsung phones. It requires that your process have ID_CAP_INTEROPSERVICES, which many OEM apps (and some first-party ones, like Skype) have, but which is not normally available to sideloaded apps.
"Unblock RPC" is the term we use for telling a Samsung service that it's in test mode by placing a file named "Non-production errors.txt" in the Documents folder of the phone. This will allow using RPCComponent anywhere in the registry, instead of just in a few specific places. Search for "unblock rpc" to learn more.
RPCComponent is a Samsung-provided native (C++/CX) DLL and WINMD for accessing various privileged functions by means of a high-privilege RPC (Remote Procedure Call) server. It is not publicly available but is bundled in many of Samsung's OEM apps and is available on this forum inside most .XAP files intended for use on Samsung phones (such as my own BootstrapSamsung tool; see the interop-unlock thread). As mentioned above, you need ID_CAP_INTEROPSERVICES for it to be useful.

I interop-unlocked (all-capabilities) my phone using methods you've posted. This was earlier in the year sometime.

I followed this closely but didn't see any finality.
I just added the Non-production errors.txt in the place noted on that relative thread.
Not sure what to do next.
Forgive me if I am being a bother.

Yeah i'm completely lost. The EnableAllSideloading XAP won't deploy for me (The manifest could not be loaded and may not be valid) so I can't even full unlock, and I have no clue how to go about using the MBN creator. So if you could hold my hand, I'd love it....
okay so I figured out MBN creator (kinda) but I still need to know the proper reg settings to disable the carrier authorization check.... i.e. the setting that points to the carrier specific DLL you mentioned...
EnableAllSideloading doesn't work on WP8.1 because they changed the security on the registry key where it operates. If you can't sideload it, that's because you're not interop-unlocked at all.
MBN Creator should, in theory, not require any particular customization unless your operator requires it; the *default* state of the Internet Sharing feature is "no restrictions, enabled by default". Several people have reported that IS started working after they flashed a custom CSC even though that CSC had nothing to do with IS, just because it removed the carrier-specific customizations that were present (and were blocking IS from working) before.
@tdecision10: If you are or were able to capability-unlock, then you can just sideload any registry editor tool you want and use that. Some of them are better than others, of course. A handful of apps, like WPTelnetD (https://github.com/FurballTheGreat/WPTelnetD/releases), ship with almost no capabilities so that they can be sideloaded on any phone, but you could unpack the XAP and edit the capability list before installing if you want to. A capability that gives access to the relevant registry key is ID_CAP_RUNTIME_CONFIG.

Okay, I put Pasquiindustry CustomPFD on my pc unzipped it added that capability in the WPAppManifest. xml file, rezipped it but now it won't deploy.
Did I think it was too simple?
EDIT:
For Spr int, I think I need to figure out how to do this:
TetheringNAIConnection
Optional. Specifies the CDMA TetheringNAI Connection Manager cellular connection that internet sharing will use as a public connection.
If a CDMA mobile operator requires using a Tethering NAI during internet sharing, they must configure a TetheringNAI connection and then specify the connection in this node.
Specified connections will be mapped, by policy, to the internet sharing service. All attempts to enumerate Connection Manager connections for the internet sharing service will return only the mapped connections.
The mapping policy will also include the connections specified in the DedicatedConnections as well.
(This is the error I get)
If the specified connections do not exist, internet sharing will not start because it will not have any cellular connections available to share
Anyone know how to add this to the APN settings?
-tdecision10
well, i reverted to 8.0 and then updated to 8.1 via retail without thinking.... so i got the new firmware and took myself out of the game :crying:
edit: reverted back to 8.0 again and i have the old firmware again. i think using the mbn creator is key. with older versions of windows phone, the APN settings were all built into the rom. now they are provisioned OTA. everytime i change the CSC, the device fails the authorization check with sprints servers and the device doesn't provision itself. what we need is the provxml that contains all of sprints APN settings. I used to have this information in a kitchen for WM 6.5, but sadly, I deleted it a long time ago. i can currently do one thing or another, unlock internet sharing but have no data connection, or, have a data connection with internet sharing locked. i believe that i can make a custom CSC with all the necessary edits but I need to get my hands on the correct sprint provxml first. I've tried and tried to find an old kitchen for Sprint with the correct files in it, but because it's so old most of them are dead download links. I think even a stock RUU for the GOLD_C (Sprint's HTC Arrive) would do. If anyone has this or can track it down I think we'd be in business....
@GoodDayToDie thanks for all the input, it's really helpful. I think that most people have found success by simply changing their CSC because their phones are not CDMA. we've got all these extra restrictions that keep the technology from working automatically
also, i believe that if I could manage to somehow get my MSL unlock code, I could manually program the APN. problem is, CDMA Workshop can't read it, and the free version doesn't let you use the brute force option to find it. Sprint changed their policy in October to under no circumstances giving out the MSL code unless your contract is up. I'm going to continue to keep trying different tech support reps to see if I can get one of them to give it up.
@tdecision10 I'm getting close, but I REALLY need those WM 6.5/7 Sprint OEM packages..... if you know of anyone or come across it browsing it would be immensely helpful!
mtstmp, I have leadpoizon's old rom for HTC Arrive. Let me know if that will work and if so, how to get it to you.
