Jail break/Root comes to Windows Phone 8 soon? - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It seems the Jail Break/Root is coming to Windows Phone 8 soon. It may free more features from wp8. Looking forward to it.

For the moment, not too hope...

Yeah, the closest we have right now is the capability-unlock for Samsung phones. That's not a full root (working on it!) and beyond that, we have almost nothing.

Anyone find any new news on this so called "920 Unlock" that has been claimed it will be released soon ? If this is true, this could open the doors to most WP devices...

The only thing I saw was Ultrashot saying it was a Riffbox "hack" (meaning you'd need to have some special hardware and probably physically open up your phone, to do it).

its also unbelievably dodgy if you don't know what your doing.
You effectively connect directly to the ROM chip, an I mean that in a physical sense and rewrite any data you want, you can "root" anything doing this as you'll bypass any security measures, its just a matter of getting the correct software to flash on to the thing that's tricky, oh and the small matter cracking open your device, locating the chip, working out the necessary configurations to power it up and flash it
I did some research on this for the focus S and yes its possible but its way beyond my abilities

And there you have it, its even harder on WP8!

It's dispointing for sure....All I want is 3 rows of tiles and custom colors on my 928.... is this too much to ask ? (Not at Devs at Microsoft)...

Then get the ATIV Odyssey, which I just unlocked InteropUnlocked Sunday, except three tiles might be overkill on a 480x800 screen. O_0
I haven't updated to GDR3 yet because I'm not sure how to avoid Diagnosis' changes once I update.

It's been updated with a XAP...

any idea if it's any good or if we need an account to download it ?

If you are 8.1 user use custom wpsystem and customPFD
also you can use resource hacker of djamol after that . Using resource hacker is not maybe very safe for this time so wait for it

Note that djamol's hacks don't make a complete root, though they are the closest thing that is public right now for a Lumia like yours. Nobody's going to say anything about a full root until it's ready, and ideally not even then not until after a major update (to give the most possible time before MS <REDACTED>s us over with an update that takes away control of our personal devices again).

Thats the shame 'bout HTC (besides da poor quality of hard- and software): they setup ONE hardware and make 5 PDAs with slighty changed details. they were never interested in making good hardware.. everytime they took something away the previous model had... now, they do have android and are able to clone nearly the same device just with another OS.
in commercial aspects, this makes sense.... but as consumer I can only think of it as a pain in the neck. my old universal has a high res display, a 3,5mm audioconnector, a well made keyboard and a fast cpu... years ago... a shame it is the size of a brick .
If someone would mad it possible to use the Compass HW with WinMo i would gladly set a bounty of 50$.
Goal would be a little App to proof that it ist working plus the sourcecode for other Devs.
Does anyone join in?
its probably another 'tv out' scenario...
basically the chipset has the tech but other required hardware / software is not present hence the features can never be used.
why on earth HTC cripple devices like this is boggling.....if the HD had been released with TV-out (which the qualcomm chipset supports) & a hw compass (to be confimed) it would have levelled the competition.....
i am sure their marketing strategy has good reasons for not doing...but as said earlier from the consumers point of view its a pain in the butt...especially considering some of us are locked in 24 month contracts.!! so wont be purchasing other handsets even if we wanted too.
lets hope some clever devs find a way to unlock these features!! (if possible)

I disagree your argumentation:
Developers here wrote drivers to implement TMC and RDS into the features of the Blackstone. HTC hasnĀ“t done it yet.
HTC seems to leave possible feature unused. Maybe to save time for their developers.
The old topic of a missing video driver is another example for that.

50$ from me for unlocking the feature + another 100$ if anyone makes it work with Google Maps + another 100$ if someone makes an augmented reality app like Wikitude (Android).

I've read the same thread from Tuxhero and I have to see it before I believe it. The only thing we've got is a blanket statement that he has read it somewhere. Someone else created slight confusion on this site before with similar statements.
Not saying that he's lying (in fact, I hope he's right), a source would help. Until then, I'm not getting my hopes up.
Im guessin they didnt include alot of features cause when the phone was released whoever ws going to buy it would buy it anyway, and when competitors (Iphone3gs) release phones with features like the compass thing etc , htc can easily release newer phones with the same features ... sort of like having it ready on earlier models so when they need to release it they can quickly!
My guess

[Q] Could it be? A full Milestone Root??

http://software2tech.com/tag/how-to-root-motorola-milestone-xt701/
It's called Easy Root. It supposedly uses some new BlueTooth Exploit.
Apparently this is a full milestone root that allows overclocking tethering and stuff, I will get back when I try it and confirm it works.
In the mean time, has anyone tried it?
I think it will work. I used universal androot and everything worked fine with it.
I use it, it works fine.
i dont see whats so hard about swapping .sbf files and dropping an update...
are people really too lazy to get things done anymore?
..everyone seems to just want an "easy button"
Personally I don't think things should be too easy...sometimes people do things without fully understanding what they're doing, then show up for warranty service/tech support and are kicked out of the room

This has nothing to do with the simplicity, and everyone to do with Donny's OS. He's exclusively a Mac user, which means there's suddenly a lot of things that are so hard about swapping .sbf files, seeing as Motorola decides that the third largest computer producer in North America doesn't need RSD Lite. He's looking for a one-click root on recommendation from another thread in this forum.
You should consider all possibilities before judging someone for their methods.

Thanks a lot man, it's true thoughh! I am actually pretty tech savy, I used to have an iPhone and decided to switch to android because I got bored. I just didn't realize there was little Mac compatibility. I am still just trying to figure this whole thing out
Is this supposed to be a full root? as in the milestone kernel?
Regards, PK
I have no idea what you mean by "as in the milestone kernel" as I'm sure you know, we cannot touch the Kernel.
As by full root, I believe this is "Level 1" root (?) - though I maybe corrected on this.
Sounds like you know exactly what I am talking about. Yes I was talking about what you refer to as "level 1" root. Long-shot & wishful thinking but a fair question don't you think? "Root" on every other phone I have means just that.
Overwhelming yes, but "never"? Know how many times the frigging pentagon gets compromised everyday? This is a frigging cell phone, nasty encryption yes but there's more than one way to skin a cat...who knows.
Anyway the points moot, if the chattering class is on target the milestone "kernal" is already out there being fiddled with...supposedly on it's way.
PK
It works - easy peasy.

Very true , sadly there was no big interest from dev/ hackers to succeed at doing this , now this phone is already considered an old phone ( 11 months old) so chances are 'cat' will be out of the bag and nobody will care anymore ..
I like the device enough to consider the XT720 if the fastboot trick would allow us to boot custom kernel ... sadly I will probably be on the hunt for another TRUE DEV phone this time .

..i boot from fully off, to fully loaded in about 9 to 12 seconds... restart only takes about 34 seconds to complete the cycle. Not sure why everyone is flipping-shiz about this fast-boot thing. Just look around and try some roms and edit them up some.
The TelusLite v5 rom boots around 15 seconds by default. You can lower it by adding in mem-hack and overclocking it.

Has development stopped for custom roms

I have been patiently waiting on Custom Roms on 2nd Gen devices such as our Focus S. Just wanting to know if anyone is still looking into this. Thanks for your help.

im not entirely sure that development even started for the focus s
which is a shame as its a beast of a device, ive asked questions to the gods that be on XDA dev to see if they could even point us In the right direction to playing with this amazing device, unfortunately they have all ignored me.
So I believe as it stands, they don't want to do anything with it as its got a very small user base, and they dnt want to help us so we can do it either.
but still, least its interop unlocked and unlock tools works with it!
This makes me deeply sad inside. It is a sensation like the one you feel when seeing a perfectly good cake being thrown in the garbage.

I am to scared to do the Samsung Update in fear of losing my unlock access. I guess I will be going to the Nokia 920 because I think the user base will be large. This device has been solid for me besides the speaker his when I take a picture.
If the device is fully functional, an you make a backup, applying the Samsung update is fine, but make sure you re apply the relock prevent app, id also strongly suggest you try to restore a backup image as well just to make sure it works!. So make a backup, copy it to a safe location, install some app, then restore your backup, the app you installed should be gone!if that works double check your still interop unlocked, apply Samsung update, DO NOT lose your previous backup an do not apply any OS updates to your phone with out first restoring to your backup! IE remove the Samsung update first!

you can open it up and take a look for your self, to be honest, there is only a couple of noticeable reasons for doing so, the biggie is the keyboard lag issues, there is also an increase in audio volume. looking at the files, it also updates the ROM its self, so hard resets will give you tango rather than Mango
(NOTE_resettng is a really bad idea, if you reset your device, you probably wont be able to restore from a backup and you may end up stuck with it being locked!)
drivers and some apps receive updates.
To be honest, i wouldn't bother, unless the keyboard lag issue is too much for you ( kinda fixable if you turn off keyboard sounds) or the audio is too low an the popping drives you mad, the whole thing feels better but its marginal at best.

no worries mate

what happened to all the click to root apps? Would any work?

Title says is all really, pretty sure that the bootloader still needs unlocking, just I remember being able to root without unlocking the bootloader, without having TWRP /Clockwork mod in the past.
Tried a few of them with no luck, any way this can be done..
I've kind of given up on the bootloader unlock code and thus the ability to flash a rom (even though Huawei allowed this device to be treble compatible, evil bast****)
Would any exploits work?
Be good to at least get root on this crippled bloatfest excuse for an android device.

Yep I got that pal..
But you've missed the point.
Why?
Unlocking the bootloader was not always necessary.
Certain devices yes but how to know??
Installing TWRP to a partition is impossible without removing the checking system which is inherently what a locked bootloader brings.
But I'm not talking about that, nor am I talking about installing a custom ROM..
Only root, nothing more.

Honestly, OnePlus 7T pro, it's just a phenomenal phone, all the things im miss are just there and not a sniff of a company locking anything down.
It's butter smooth. I used my pro next to the 7t pro and honestly it's an incredible difference, it's like playing a game at 144hz for the first time, 60 just can't cut it ever again.
I'm going to let this can run down and get the 8, I usually upgrade 2-3 times a year but thought I'd give it a miss this year.. kind of glad I did but it's paining me now as my bootloader is screwed and there's only so much I can do without root.
I'd love to remove the swap memory (page file /zram) but I don't think it's possible.
Swap torpedo did this and the speed increase is amazing.
PS: I wouldn't bother with the S10 it's not as good as the oneplus devices tbh. S11 might compete but it's still Samsung so nah not for me.

I use my banking apps with root.
Things I need.
Root access to files for tweaks.
Page file removal
Bloat removal
Ad removal ( I can't tell you how much I don't like adverts)
Mods that Devs miss (CRT animation, Audio Boost etc)
Custom ROMs: more efficient, faster, feature rich
Latest OS
Early releases
If I didn't mod my phone using root id be bored in weeks (which I am) or I'd buy an IPhone.
First works for me on root, I just agreed when the notification same up.
For the ones that don't, the mobile version of the web page works perfectly for me, dependent on bank of course.
The trade off just isn't worth it for me especially with emui which is abysmally tedious and something I'd love to just delete from history.
