[Q] which recorder app do you use? - Moto X Q&A

lightweight and good quality, please recommend, thanks!

I guess it depends on what you want to record. For simple notes to myself, I use Google Keep. I like that I can use it via voice commands without even picking up my phone.
For longer recordings, I just created a toggle recording task in Tasker as that is already on all of my devices.

Evernote, Google keep was running too frequently draining battery

What is the best IM app for the Captivate in terms of battery life? I am trying to decide between AT&T's stock app, Trillian beta, or AIM.
EDIT: I do like the capability of multiprotocol (I'm a Digsby user on PC, having used Trillian for PC when it came out for Android), but multiprotocol is not necessary for me. Only AIM and FBchat are really important.

I'm using GTalk right now and I like it overall. My biggest gripe about it is that you can't change the conversation style of the chat windows. Specifically, I can't change the font size or resolution of the chats which is problematic because there are many times where I can't see the actual chat window once the keyboard is up. For example, I use Smart Keyboard which adds the word prediction line on top of the keyboard, which then additionally has the input box ontop of that. If I write more than 1 line, the box size increases further and it gets to the point where I can't see the recent chat lines.
I've downloaded Trillian to give it a try and I loved the look of the chat windows and interface overall. It uses chat bubbles instead which I think looks cleaner and more organized (I think KiK Messenger has the best look). Even better, the entire client uses a smaller font which is nice. I also like the black theme that is standard in the app. The things I didn't like was the persistent icon in the notification bar as I don't like icons cluttering my status bar that aren't actually notifications. I unchecked the "ongoing" notification option in settings which didn't do anything at all but I believe is a bug. The second thing I didn't like was how it didn't allow me to swipe between active chat windows. I've gotten use to this in GTalk and it was very intuitive and second nature to me. Thirdly, I didn't like how the input box didn't expand when you typed more than a single line. It would just keep scrolling over which I find annoying as I don't get to review my message in full before I send it. Finally, I didn't like how they had 2 send buttons - one beside the input box and one as the return key. I'd much rather have the emotion button down there like I have it in Gtalk. These 3 things made it a deal breaker for me unfortunately.
So yes, I'm looking for a good IM app as well in which at least GTalk and MSN is included. I googled Meebo and but the look of the interface has already turned me off. I'll take a look at eBuddy however.
Ebuddy is best. I have tried all even paid one like bjive. Ebuddy worked best.

All of you are entirely missing Aus_Azn's actual question.
The question is what is the best client in terms of BEST BATTERY LIFE.
All of you are simply answering according to what IM client simply works or has nice options.
Anyway, out of all the messaging multi-protocol apps I've tried, the default IM app bundled with AT&T/Samsung that handles both AIM and MSN has been the most power efficient, however it's trash due to it not being able to switch seamlessly (or at all) between wifi and 3G (last I checked, maybe they updated it to not suck?).
Out of actual useful universal clients, I've found Fring to be the most power efficient.
I haven't tried too many individual protocol apps as of late, however I noticed that anything with MSN/WLM tends to suck up more juice than something like AIM or gtalk. Perhaps the MSN/WLM protocol just uses our radios more/less efficiently.
The official AIM client was okay. Pretty much every dedicated MSN/WLM client I used sucked up power like nobody's business. Gtalk is easily the best out of the single protocol clients. Kik is even more power hungry than MSN/WLM apps.
I was using the trillian beta and it was pretty decent on battery life. But any multi app that runs un the background is going to kill you r battery.
On Cognitions latest and greatest. Don't ask what version DG pumps em' out to fast!
@JPS: I'll give the stock app another whirl. My phone is constantly on 3G anyway, so it's no different.

I was pretty sure that all the stock IM applications that came on AT&T phones didn't use data, but rather SMS. At least that was the case on my first cell phone (Ericsson Z500a), my a727, Blackjack, and Impression (all Samsung phones btw) so I could be wrong. The only thing that might have used data was the initial sign in, but that was never shown as a data charge on any of my bills since 2003.

To-do list for Note

I am looking for a to-do list app with following features for my g-note:
1) at the front/back of the to-do list, show what time to do it.
2) checkmark if the task is completed.
3) if the task not done on the planned day, it will show up next day. maybe with different color.
4) large widget size.
5) date should be customizable.
Anyone aware of such an app?
Try "Any.do". quite similar to what you are looking for.
Try "due today". I think it does everything you're looking for and looks nice too.

Why use an android only app. With the note, use a better highend Web tool like toodledo.com or rtm. I use toodledo and it is great and I can use it on any device. Apps are great, but one of the best things about the note is having no frustration with using pro Web apps.

Toodledoo doesn't have widgets as it isnt an Android App. It's a web app and a backend, but there are several apps which sync with Toodledoo.
Right now, Play Store is announcing 2Do: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.guidedways.android2do
But there are lots more:
https://play.google.com/store/search?q=toodledo&c=apps
I think Todo.ly has most if not all these features, and there is a neat little android app that syncs with the web service.
Above a certain number of tasks, or to get certain features, I think it's a subscription service tho.
Again I suggest you try toodledo first on your computer, then set it up as a bookmark on your phone. On the Note it looks great. Then if you like it, you can make it a short cut - and what do you know, something that seems like an app. Only issue is if you can get a connection. But that works on any computer device you want. Read your todo list on anyones computer if you need to. Apps are great but - I never use an app when the web will do. Same for me and google docs. I know then I have the cloud and the internet behind me. My phone dies, my data is safe and accessible anywhere on anything.
Side Note
There is a movement ( i generally support) where some folks call apple and android apps (mainly from large corporations) 'the anti-internet' - because many corporations are filtering the www world ( or own the ads) by making apps to stuff that is right there on the web anyways (a news radio station app for instance) but filters or dumbed down or controlled. They would love to get rid of the more open internet, and they worry that you might keep other windows open or you can ad block or click to other sites - so they want to filter and control you with there nice UI but filtered app. I love apps that do something, but if it is a refilter of the web - well I would rather put up for a slightly worse UI to get the real unfiltered internet. And of course with the Note ( size, pen, ...) it is easier to look at real webpages ( why I got it). google docs and toodledo are two examples of web over app.

Is there a native SIP client for Nexus 7 Tablet?

Hi Everyone,
I understand SIP has been natively supported on Android for a while now. Is there a Google native application that I can download on my Nexus 7 tablet?
Thanks

Thanks for the feedback AZImmortal. You are right it doesn't come with Nexus 7. But isn't the phone app open-source? Can I not somehow get it on the nexus 7? copy and paste style But in all seriousness, I always wondered if the native dialer was customizable?
Thanks
I don't know what kind of customization you're looking for, but if you want a SIP client, you can use SIPDroid.
Groove_IP works great. All ya need is your google voice number and set it up to "chat only" and enter this info into Groove_IP. Very easy setup.
Sipdroid (with pbxes account) is a lot of work to setup but has lots more power. I have not tested Sipdroid/Pbxes on this tablet yet. :good:
If you use Google Voice, GrooveIP works incredibly well.
But you really need headphones or a bluetooth headset other wise it's a speakerphone.
Headphones?

Will an old iphone earbud set with the built in mic be functional in the N7 headphone jack?
AndroidMilos - Please don't spam for Groove IP. I don't intend to use Google Voice and your answer is not relevant.
Reason why I am after native SIP is because it's native - no bloat-ware...
Maybe this will help me:

You might want to see if any of the custom roms already have the Phone app included. If not, maybe you can ask the dev to include it and explain that it's for SIP calls. I believe that the link you referred to is for enabling SIP when the Phone app has it disabled, but since the Nexus 7 doesn't have the Phone app in the first place, I'm guessing you can't follow the thread. You should probably be able to extract it from another JB ROM and insert it, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that. You should give one of the non-native SIP clients a try before you go through too much trouble to see if it will do what you need.
SIPDroid
SIPDroid seems to work.
You can enable the phone app and the built in sip by editing the framework-res.apk file and changing "voice capable" from false to true.
This will enable the phone app however it will only allow you to add a SIP account at a density of 320.
So change the density to 320, reboot, add you SIP account, change the density again to whatever it was before and you got native sip working.
It works well on speakerphone but a little jerky with a BT headset.
If you don't know how to edit the framework-res.apk file let me know the ROM you are on and I will upload it for you.

I use the Bria Softphone (by Counterpath). I actually work for a VoIP company, and we use the g729 codec, and that was the best client I could find for android that supported it. Granted it's somewhat costly. But it works very well for me.

Yes, I use Bria, excellent, alos, 'VOIP by antisip' works, also has video facility, Sipbdroid works too, I have tried them all, but Bria is superior by far ..... my opinion of course!

I realize you are looking for native, but I have to recommend CSIPsimple if you don't have any luck with native. Very good, open source and hardly even has an interface - it is very well integrated with the OS.

Do you know the best config for CSIPsimple?
I've been using Bria (a third party app by CounterPath) for years.
Yeah, it has some cons and costs money, but it has always worked well for me. It also supports g729 and video.
One thing to keep in mind for VoIP and phones/tablets is if you want to stay connected all the time, versus only occasionally when making calls, you need to use SIP over TCP vs UDP. Most clients/providers default to UDP since it has less overhead works fine on computers/servers/etc. Assuming you are running a VoIP server or client on a computer or phone, especially if it's on the local network, UDP would be the preferred option. The problem on battery powered devices is that it will drain them very quickly. In my testing, leaving the client connected constantly will shorten your overall battery life by about half.
However TCP is much more robust and capable of keeping sessions open through NAT (which your device will pretty much always be behind), and requires less client level activity to keep the session open (hence more deep sleep). As a result, since enabling SIP TCP on my server, I can leave the client running all the time with almost no battery impact. It's like night and day.
Many people complain about VoIP apps and battery drain, and this is a simple fix to eliminate it.

What Is Your MUST HAVE APP?

Hi all,
As I said above, I would like to know what is your MUST HAVE APPLICATIONS ?. Last time when I did the same on a different phone, I discovered a lot of good app that I missed out, such as Adaway, Droidwall, etc, etc, and I am sure others will benefit from it too,
And as for myself, list below are all the apps that I must have on every Android phone that I possess. On a side note, I am not working for any of them, far from marketing it, just feel the need to share.
1. Adaway - I simply couldn't stand all of the ads, because sometimes they can be way too obtrusive
2. Firewall Plus - I have been using Droid Wall previously, but recently change to Firewall Plus for Droid Wall has never been updated since like 2011.But still, it does the job.
3. Nova Launcher Prime - Stock home just couldn't get the job done for me, And I even think it is a hassle to use. What I love the most about this launcher is their gestures setting. I have set every frequently used app on gestures and opening them never take me more than 2 seconds.
4. Brilliant Quotes - I need a daily motivation, and this piece of app does it flawlessly.
5. Dolphin Browser - Nothing beats it IMO. Smooth browsing experience.
6. MX Player - This one will play anything you throw at it, and it is also the friendliest movie player out there.
7. Kingsoft Office - Miles ahead of the preinstalled office app.
8. Root Browser - EZ File explorer used to be awesome, but since there is no longer root file explorer, it is now become worthless, at least for my kind of use.
9. SMS Scheduler - You know what? I have never forgotten to wish birthdays to my dearest and beloved ones.
10. Soccer Livescores - The name itself tells you what it does.
11. SwiftKey - With this app, I am 100% certain that I type faster on my phone.
12. Titanium Backup - Do I need to elaborate? Without it, what is the point of rooting your phone?
13. Waze - Never get lost. Errr...almost
14. Whatsapp - This is where my friends are. If they change, so will I. For now, this is a must have.
15. Alarm Clock Plus - Nothing wakes me up in the morning, nothing. But not this one, you will definitely get out of your bed. I have set mine to never ever to stop ringing, and even if I want to silence it,there are 10 difficult math questions for me to solve. And after those 10, I am wide awake.
16. Mobicalc Calculator - Stock is just meh at best.
These are all my MUST HAVE APP. What about you? Please do share with all of us here.
Thanks in advance.
Not feeling like writing a wall of text so i'll just post a small list.
Adaway, viper4android, titanium backup, YouTube, rootbrowser, battlelog

Also you can change Launcher Icon and some other modifications.
You can also ''modify'' the Popup with other colours etc.
Just a few that haven't already been mentioned -
Greenify (requires root) - Allows you to hibernate rogue apps that wake up your phone and drain battery.
Clipper - Replaces the default clipboard and allows you to go back multiple times over things that you have copied.
Cerberus - Anti theft software with options to locate, lock, wipe etc. This has been installed on every android device I have had. Paid.
Root Explorer - The original root explorer that was available and I still use years later. Paid, but it was cheap enough and I have had good value from it.
Most of everything else I use has already been mentioned.

There are some apps that wake the phone up when not needed that are still useful to have around, like Google Maps and Facebook to name 2 that cause wakes on my phone, so it allows you to still have these apps installed without them draining battery.

alternative apps to use google voice

Friends, May 15 is approaching fast. On that day all the current apps that can make free wifi calls via GV, including Groove IP, will stop working for us. What are the alternative ways to keep taking advantage of free GV calls? Thanks!
For those who may not yet know about this, a quick reference is here: http://androidcommunity.com/groove-ip-shutting-down-due-to-google-voice-changes-20131104/
From what I understand that functionality will now be handled by Hangouts. No third party app required. Besides, if Google is killing all 3rd party app support for VoIP calls, how could there be any other 3rd party solutions.

Potential alternative considering they don't follow suit like Groove voice. also there is some calling lag but overall the app is solid.
