my problem with the carriers and android.

I have started a group on facebook called ' the open android movement ' I'm sure it will have absolutely no effect on the monopoly of carriers that are out there denying customers the right to have their phone ship rooted. Which I'm still not seeing at this point to be a bad thing. the ones that mess it up are the people that don't read. shipping with root doesn't mean squat to the average user. but means a ton to the thousands of people out there that have gone through the motions to gain root. Google advertises this platform as an Open Source platform, yet the ones they have to deal with to make the money, continue shut it down. Again I'm at a loss. I have written a letter to the OHA and to Google still with no response. I recently read an article posted at our androidSPIN site androidspin.com/2010/06/16/att-continues-to-lock-down-android about AT&T Locking the latest phone down further and not allowing external apps to be installed. this would detour any company that makes beta apps for testing on the device or for Companys like EA and Gameloft from being able to sell games directly. to add insult to injury T-Mobile is releasing an app called device tune-up. to hopefully help extend battery life. Which is another contradictory to me. Google has explained many times that an external app killer is not necessary due to the OS and how it operates. One day i hope these carriers quit locking down and restricting phones and let the people take over. For instance. The battey life on my My Touch 3G original is better then the G1, but with the ROM im running (which is a fully operational and functioning port of 2.1) my battery life is nearly triple what the stock 1.6 OS that they have on it. it's not about apps. its about the lack of support and understanding the carriers have of the OS. If a carrier took a great phone, the nexus or incredible or whatever has the best hardware, and let the community support it and build for it the phones would sell 2ce as fast. It wouldn't take much and it would save the carriers and the OEM's a ton of money on development and resources. take it to our DEV's. cyanogen, eugene_373, htcclay and many others it would change the game. Think about it for a minute. i have a G1 and MT3G all rooted. all with different versions of android and i flash all the time.... did I switch to sprint? no im still paying T-Mobile for service. Rooting isn't unlocking to take to another carrier. the numbers speak for then selves, OpenEclair v1.3.0.1 by openteam 41353 downloads just off of androidSPIN. CyanogenMod-5 v5.0.7 Stable by Cyanogen 21927 downloads. just 3 different ROMs of many. and those are both Android 2.1 eclair that the G1 or MT3G may or may not ever see. maybe it will jump to 2.2 but i promise the DEV's will take it and make it faster, better, more stable and increase battery life. all im saying is this: Why do the carriers still fight the OS and the customers? Why do they sign up to be part of the OPEN HANDSET ALLIANCE but lock down the handsets? Isn't that a contradiction? I have answers and I continuously ask questions. If anyone wants to be our friend go search for the open android movement, write things up. ask the questions email the carriers email the OEM's email everyone. sitting back and complaining doesn't get us anywhere. if this huge group of people get together and start asking someone will have to listen and make a change. I want it changed. you want it changed. Wouldn't it be great if you had a preinstalled app that lists ROM's to download and flash like the rooters already have? wouldn't it be nice to use your phone you sped hundreds of dollars on the way it was ment to be used. hit us up! help join the movement.

HD7 and WP7 future Customization level/Roms?

I am confused on all of this and I have read all the threads on the HD7 here. In regards to both the HD7 and WP7 will there ever be the ability to have custom roms and be rooted? I'm still not sure what the chevron tool really even did besides make your phone have a free dev account and 3 party apps. I'm coming from the HD2 in which I changed roms on a daily basis and had multiple versions of android running. I'm just wondering if we will ever get to that level of modification with windows 7. Now mind you I have no interest running android on my HD7, thats not what this thread is about. If I did I would have bought the MT4G which my GF got when we did the buy one get one deal 2 weeks ago. I just wanna know if there is going to be real Dev support like there is with the HD2. Is the interest level there? I love WP7 however its just a little to bland, but with a few visual mods it would be the most amazing UI ever and Im not talking about missing features. I'm talking about eye candy. Am I off base? I am I missing the point of WP7? I dont know I just want some feedback on all of this.

Here is one reply :
It will take a real long time ( maybe years ) because it is a brand new os and closed ,so everything has to be reverse engineered and that will take long when there are even dev's that are willing to put in the time .

Hi, I thought it was Microsoft's intention to set a standard - what they did regarding restrictions of the hardware (Screen resolution, keys,...). This should give some similar standard as Apple did with the iPhone, but I had to learn, that the OS itself is customized by every provider (omitting languages, ...).
I really hoped windows phone might be similar to Win7 for PC - getting updates, optional updates, add-ons directly from microsoft and applications programmed by third parties (Marketplace). But how shall updates of the OS by Microsoft work, if not installable on the phones as those updates needs to be customized by the provider?
Nice approach to get a stable and equal OS (don't bother being controlled by Microsoft - that case you should get another phone - my two cents), but that case the OS on the phone must be by Microsoft themselves, not T-Mobile, O2, vodafone, ....

Well exactly...I mean the iphone was jailbroken very shorly after being released. I was an ex iphone user as well and ran jailbroken very early on. I'm just wondering if the Interest Level is there? I mean the iphone was worked on by some greats like geohot and others. I guess im saying with WP7 getting written off early on by a lot of people (i believe in the os) will devs even give it a shot?

wp7 will be jailbroken real fast i think ( it is already jailbroken but no one really know how to make native code work on wp7)
custom rom's is something totally different ( I belief that there aren't any custom rom's on ios)
there is a history on custom rom's for WM for years (wm4-wm6.5) but WP7 is totally different and everyone has to start all over (reverse engineering) and that will take long .

I don't think you understand. The carriers are not allowed to touch the core OS, they are allowed to add their apps and edit a couple of things (like t-mobile making google the search in IE), but overall, OEMs and carriers can't do much with the OS itself, everything they do has to be done through apps.

I know the iphone is jailbroken, but are there really, full bore custom ROMs for it?
I worry that with jailbreaking, you get a host of other problems, like bugs and a laggy OS.
For me, I am happy with it as is for now and am curious to see where it goes.

Well, the team behind the WP7 unlocking/sideloading hack ChevronWP7 are currently talking to Microsoft about the openness of WP7. Right now, no one know's what's going to happen, besides that WP7 will eventually be completely unlocked and customizable with roms at some point in time. My hope is that the Chevron team can talk Microsoft into officially supporting homebrew. I understand that thats a far fetched dream, but it makes sense because tweaking and modding are the only reasons most people used winmo after 2007 or 2008; and Android has exploded since they began rooting devices.
why shouldn't Microsoft use us as alpha/beta testers? that and anything awesome we develop they can basically steal from us. Seems like a win-win for Microsoft

That's what I wanna know. My hope is the interest level that there is in WM will soon be there for WP7. I'm sure there is much room for improvement that only a custom rom and a chef from xda can produce.

Operation Google

As some of you may have heard Google has brought out Motorola. Although the deal isn't 110% it's getting there.
Google and Android seem to pride themselves in being open, which, Motorola and it's bootloader policy are not.
I know it's a shot in the dark but hopefully we as a community can get our case known with Google and hopefully for them to release the keys to our devices.
This thread is about ideas on how to put our case forward to Google, and I don't mean spamming their social networking accounts with "FREE TEH BOOTLOADER" at least, not yet. Ideally, I would like to be as formal as possible (such a writing up and getting you guys to sign an agreement about why you want the bootloader unlock, how it would effect our user experience as well as how it would embrace the Android way of thinking - even that we would sign away our right to a warranty).
What do you guy think?

had exactly the same idea the moment i heard the news. I would propose some kind of petition. Also maybe we can add comments to the official anouncement in Google blog, in an educated and informative way.

in the past 5 months I tried the following:
HTC Hero, Galaxy Vibrant,Motorola Atrix 4G, My touch 4G, Nexus 1, Sony Ericsson X8, Blackberry torch, HTC HD7 & went back to Milestone (in fact I have 2 now)..
I must say that main advantage for Milestone is two things I admire:
- fancy material & great design
- brilliant developers like Kalabadan, Feeo & Lucka
Upon trying unlocked devices such as HTC devices I found out that even for such popular Cyanogen is not that advance compared to Kalabadan work (you can check it out through xda) meaning you need both futures to get perfections (good set specifications & brilliant developers)..
Google acquiring Moto is a great news hoping our brilliant developers to stick with it.

a Representative should contact google
You guys need someone high ranked within XDA to prepare a short request concerning the milestone issue and send through the proper channels.
I don't know what are the proper channels, but they can be searched on google site.
In addition, I don't see why not to contact Google through G+.

Unlike Motorola, it is quite easy to contact the higher ups at Google.
Now, to the statement, any ideas on how we should start it?

That is really verry sad, I love the hardware that motorola builds but if there is no change in this politics my next device will be from someone else.
I still hope that there will be changes once the deal is done, I love my Milestone.

They had promised to unlock the bootloader at the end of 2011 before google got into the game. I did not believe them (or they would unlock it with 6-12 months further delay), but now just maybe they keep their promise and unlock the devices when they said they would...

i'm with you guys.
There is a good chance that Motorola will change some of their policies by Google's influence, and we hope they start unlocking the bootloaders.
But i think a strong petition by the community will help alot.

Motorola never said such a thing. They did however say that start unlocking some handsets depending on unknown to the public factors.

Android for HD7

So I don't know why WP7 people feel the need to bash the ones who want android for this device. I'm an HD2 owner, have had android on it for basically the entire time I have owned it...and it's been awesome, because lets face it, Windows Mobile 6.5 was garbage. I recently dropped it and cracked the screen pretty severely, checked into getting it replaced by my $8/month phone insurance (which I have since cancelled), and they (not shockingly) advised me that they can no longer replace it with another HD2, but with a HD7 instead.
So I looked here first, wondering how easily I could put android on it and was shocked by the lack of android development, and the numerous attitudes towards it. Obviously it would be better/easier to get another "4.3" inch HTC phone that runs andro-crap", but I won't be able to do that for a couple of months and was looking at a quick fix. I'm just surprised that it hasn't been done, since it's been done on almost EVERY OTHER PHONE. I just don't get it. So I'm going to buy a digitizer and just replace the screen on my HD2. Just thought I would share my experience. Oh, and yes, I have played around with WP7, and while much better than 6.5 it's just not for me.

Throwing android on the HD2 was always going to be an improvement... I had an HD2 and threw WP7 on it, which is why I now have an HD7... But if you liked android and the HD2, why not get the Desire HD?
Gotta love the versatility of all these HTC devices though...
I think its human nature to want something different or odd... I'm sure if it were easy to get android or WP7 on an iphone, heaps would do it just to be different...

I agree with you completely. I'm in the exact same situation as I had a dual boot android/wp7 hd2 and the digitizer broke. Mostly I used android because of the apps, but I like wp7 better for it's sleek design.
I'm baffled how 75% of people on the hd7 threads can say 'JUST GO BUY A ANDROID PHONE" and "why would you want to dual boot an hd7?". I could buy an android phone but, stupid tmobile replaced my hd2 with an hd7 for free. it's a great phone, there are few which are better currently.
In the hd2 threads, most people wanted to push the limits and explore every possible option; that seems to be missing in large part from the hd7 threads. "just go buy an android phone" will never be the answer.

The only reason to bash I can see, is the lack of people reading and realizing that there is a dedicated Android thread just a couple lines above, where stuff like this should have been posted. Haha...
Otherwise, there is just very little interest in getting Android on this device, which means that it makes more sense to go buy an Android phone, because you're just going to be waiting a while for an Android solution, on a device/platform that does not need it as much as something like the HD2/WinMo did. Hence why there is little to no progress on getting Android on this device.

Because when I am able to get a new subsidized phone, it will definitely be something better than a Desire HD. I just have to wait for my contract to end first, which is in January.

The overall WP7 posse hardly resembles the WM crowd.
I've been a die hard Windows fan ever since my AT&T 8525-even before that with a couple PPC PDA's. When I lost that phone I replaced it with a Samsung Epix. Despite my horrible experience software fiascoes and the Epix, I still returned to Window's Mobile when I got my Tilt2. It was while I was dealing with my Epix that I discovered a cooked rom on a site that I had not previously heard of, XDA Developers. I now use this site a my primary guide to purchase new phones...if I can't hack it and install custom roms I have no interest in it.
Through my time with my Tilt2 I made some observations about the Windows Mobile community. Many of them were like me and had over time found many CABs that work well for them and were content with a platform that the were familiar with. Many of them were veteran programmers well versed in C++ and could really do some magic. Others just signed a two year contract with the cheapest old smart phones their provider was clearing out. What ever the reason we had our devices in a world where IOS and Android were rapidly taking over. Every one worked together and amazing things were accomplished. In the Touch Pro 2 forums, Android and Ubuntu was running, and a lot of you are familiar with everything that was done with the HD2. These things happened because WM fans by nature enjoyed doing them.
As Windows Mobile phones started to die off through breakage and device upgrades, a lot of my companions switch gears to the Iphone after it made great strides since the first gen EDGE only model, in OS capability, hardware performace, and a now enormous hacking community. Others who wanted remain anti Apple and wanted more freedom out of the box went with Android.
It finally came to my time in the begining of this year to upgrade. I knew very little about Windows Phone 7 devices except that I did not know a single person who owned one and that it was not backwards compatible with any of my software. Being completely anti Apple I began shopping around fully intending to buy an Android device. I started playing with floor models and I noticed one thing about every Android device. No matter how fast the hardware was, when I would touch and slide to unlock, there was always a noticeable lag. I found that to be a bad sign. Then when navigating the phones, they all lack the responsiveness of my wifes Iphone 4. So I tried the Windows Phone devices and they were all incredibly responsive. In all the menus and and web browser I slide my finger rapidly trying to out run the display and I swear I could not find any where that lagged. I was intrigued and hooked. After checking XDA and of all the WP7 phones available to me with AT&T, the HD7s was the only one with custom roms.
I believe this to be the only reason any of us here. Window Phone 7's foundation is simply flawless. Now that's not to say over all the OS is any where near perfect. It is severely lacking in software, customization, and even basic preferences. It is in these ways I've described WP7 as ever more "iPhone" than the iPhone itself. Now all this mean's is the biggest reason any body has a WP7 device is because the actually like it. So it's not far from reason there is little interest in changing operating systems. We've reached a point were all smart phones have virtually equal internal hardware so phone are chosen primarily based on software. The people who find themselves stuck with an HD7 against their liking are a very small fraction of an already small community. Those coming from an HD2 or a Rodium know that to get Anrdroid onto these devices took countless man hours from many very determined and very talented people working together. They just aren't with us here in the HD7 community. We are lucky to have the very talented developers that are here producing custom Windows ROMs.

Own android nd wm7/hd7
I agree with all of you but, with that said this is my take on it. I am using Simple Mobile $60 unlimited plan by the way just so everyone knows. I have both a htc hd7 with a 32gb sd in it- its running mango. I also have three android phones. HTC wildfire s in white, Samsung Vibrant, Htc mytouch 4g(my only 4g phone). Starting from the top. All my android phones have custom roms installed and are rooted. I love android as much as the next guy cause when I use those phones I love the apps and love that I have all of them nearly maxed out on there performance figures due to the roms and overclocking.
This being said all my android phones still can not keep up with my hd7 in everyday use when you talk about smoothness. Like the guy before me was saying as well how all the android phones he tested lagged when unlocking. That is still the same situation here with me after installing custom roms which did make the phones faster and after overclocking made then even faster. But even with my hd7 running a stock mango rom it still is the phone that I use most because of the smoothness and responsiveness that it has when using it for normal everyday smartphone activities like gps, internet browsing, watching videos, playing music, and texting and calling of course. This stock oem wm7.5 mango hd7 works better at all these things than any of my android phones.
This being said I would like to have android on the device as a dual boot that way I would get rid of my other android phones and just have this one phone for both. But, I would still use wm most of the time, which is the reason that I think ppl who own an hd7 or any other wm7 or 7.5 phone own them cause everything works great. and yes i agree with the other guy before me in saying that it does need more development in customizations and applications. but where it lacks here it makes up for in performance and ease of use. so in my opinion there is a plus and minus to both android phones and wm phones. the only question is which one will correct there downfalls first. apples will not be talked about with me cause i hate them but, as far as wm and droid go both need improvements.
Going with this thread this would be my reason for why i think no one has really developed an android system for this device yet cause unlike the android devices the hd7 does everything the way a smartphone should. I would dual boot but, i would never wipe wm7.5 off of it cause that would just be stupid and would be like downgrading. performance wise wm7 > android anyday until android fixes their laggy os.

What should I know before I get this?

Hey all, I'm seriously considering purchasing this device and I think i should understand more about root on it before I get it. I'm currently using the AT&T HTC One X (evita, dual-core) and I've got a very good understanding of the Android OS and rooting in general, and for HTC devices, but not a grasp on Samsung devices. I've rooted and ROM'd a few in the past for friends, but I still am not 100% on them. So, coming from and HTC device and knowing a lot about android in general my main questions are...
1. How/If there is a way to return to stock android firmware (like HTC's RUU)
2. Is download mode just essentially bootloader mode? HTC does it differently.
3. Any commonly known tweaks/tricks that someone coming from a different company would not know about?
4. Anything else I should know?

Seems the Note community isn't too friendly, I don't have much info for you because I too Come from HTC. I was on Sprint and the forums were much more active / friendly. The Note3 has root, but you can do little More than remove bloat and run ad blocker apps.

Hey, I dont see why there was a comment about this forum being unfriendly. I think so far its one of the best out there. Guys are real appreciative to the devs for giving us root, questions get answered without unneeded comments etc.
To answer your questions i dabbled with several HTC phones and the RUU system was good. Odin is good too but a bit more complicated. There are tutorials which can help though
Like mentioned before some people have had build quality issues but thats gonna be hit or miss like any device. Personally mine hasnt had any issues, though i managed to scratch the bottom of my screen already haha purely my fault though.
Biggest thing coming from HTC is Samsung wont unlock your bootloader like HTC. I really miss the way HTC treats ya like a big boy/girl and let you decide for yourself.
One last thing you should know is this will be the best device youve ever had! Have fun with it! Any other questions lemme know

What else do we really need? I mean you can add tons of stuff via xposed and wanum.. and people are working on themes. Even thought touchwiz blows there's no point in owning this device without the s-pen apps.
