Hi all devs,
We just released a blogpost http://developer.sonyericsson.com/wp/2011/12/15/ice-cream-sandwich-alpha-rom-available-for-unlocked-xperia-phones/ announcing that we have made an ICS alpha ROM available for users with very good tech skills. This means that you should have an unlocked boot loader http://unlockbootloader.sonyericsson.com, and have the knowledge to switch between different ROMs (read our blog post for further disclaimers ; ) ). Also, please note that the released SW is only applicable for Xperia™ arc S, Xperia™ neo V and Xperia™ ray. Xperia™ arc will not work, as it has different partition layouts.

http://dl-developer.sonyericsson.com/Xperia/ICS/Alpha/Xperia_ray_ICS_alpha_EULA.html
This is the first time we have done an activity like this and I, and all others behind this really value your feedback https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/STRJKQF. The release of the ICS alpha ROM is our way of sharing where we are with the ICS upgrade project. My team at Developer World, also published an article last week outlining the different activities we have to pass before releasing an official ICS ROM http://developer.sonyericsson.com/wp/2011/12/07/ice-cream-sandwich-from-source-code-release-to-software-upgrade/. Looking at that article I would say that we are now in the Bringup phase. You will also quickly see that we have not passed certification and approval phase, since we were not allowed to have the radio module turned on. This means that you can’t make any phone calls or use Wi-Fi. However, I still thought that this will be valuable to the tech community. Youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoIsNYR7XJ8
What you can do is to test ICS applications early on, and you can also give us feedback on this initiative, and what you think about the ICS alpha ROM. Did it meet your expectations? What things would you wish for. We have a link to a survey in the blog post, where you can submit your feedback. But hey, I can’t promise that we can take care of all requests, as I know you will have plenty… Lastly I believe this release will benefit the custom ROM developers so they can see where we are in our process and how we have solved different things.

This a great step from SE. We'll be happy to test and provide feedback.

That's awesome!
Thanks for releasing the alpha builds and supporting the modding community!

WOOOW, SE Development Team is fantastic!
Little question:
Xperia arc not yet?
WOW! This is seriously fantastic! When you first announced you were supporting FXP and made camera libs avaiable, I thought that was amazing. But letting the community try you guys have achieved is so cool! This is the most awesome thing, I have ever seen a company do, seriously!
I have seen something similair before, where devs. make an alpha-release, and already from there, want different oppinions and built from that. Keep involving with the community SE!
FreeXperia Team want to say thanks to SonyEricsson for the great Communitywork you are doing!
Best Regards
That's nice, but I have two questions.
The final ICS for Xperia will look different, fresh, right? Becuase this one looks just like Gingerbread.
I noticed on that video, that you have to long press home button to get the list of running apps. Isn't ICS supposed to get rid of the menu button, by making it to work like home long press used to in Gingerbread?
great move from SE!!!
Hmmm what will happen if i flash this to my Play? Not the best idea right?

I wouldn't think this would be a good idea lol.
Anyone read this its inside the "readme" Also, if you unlock the boot loader, you will not be able to download and install the final Ice Cream Sandwich software upgrade from Sony Ericsson.
For additional information on limitations and warranty, please see the Sony Ericsson Unlock boot loader service.
Spot on SE Dev team, you guys are leading the way these days when it comes to the support for the people that people ask what phone to get, as lets be honest everyone ask's there "Geek" friends what phone to get and the love that SE gives to us just goes to show you are a company that really does care what we the users want to see in the products we buy from you.

I already did mine through a comment on your blog post.
However, I will repost it here:
First of all, let me congratulate you for the effort and transparency you’re putting into this. This bridge Sony Ericsson is attempting to create in order to involve more experienced or curious consumers and developers is something that greatly makes me proud for picking your products in the first place.
Since you’ve already demonstrated to value our opinion, I hope you’ll consider mine:
Please, consider upgrading the kernel version to 3.0. The 2.6.32 you have on Gingerbread, and by looking at the demo you just posted it will also be on ICS, is severely outdated (October 2009). 2.6.32 was the official version for Froyo whereas 2.6.35 was for Gingerbread and 3.0 is for ICS. Anyone inside the kernel world knows that a great deal of optimizations separate these versions (RCU, CPU scaling, SLAB, MM, PM, …) which have a deep impact on the overall experience.
Sadly to say, Sony Ericsson competitors aren’t keeping themselves on 2.6.32 (all of them advanced to .35 on Gingerbread and probably 3.0 on ICS) and this may cause an undesirable discrepancy in experience not in favor of your products. I also know that this probably means rewriting a few libs or drivers there and there but you can’t deny it will be worth in the end.
In my opinion, the benefits of pushing the kernel version to 3.0 far outweigh the increased delay you may have on releasing ICS (1 month?). Do consider this.

Hi fellas, I was wondering if it was worth going for the XT or wait for the XV to pop out? (in Belgium, they're still not out)
They're both kinda same except for screen sizes..
So, I wanna know, what are the pros & cons of those 2 devices.
Guess the XV is cheaper, right?

Get the Sony Xperia V. It's better than the Sony Xperia T. The Sony Xperia V has (but is not limited to) 4G and HSPA+, is IP57 certified - dust and water resistant, has a 342 ppi pixel density, has Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2, Bluetooth v4.0 and up to 18 h music play. All of those specs are better than the Sony Xperia T's specs.
V is more expensive, but it won't be released in Belgium. You could get it from the Netherlands through smartphoneshop.be or gsmwijzer.be in a few weeks though.

What's your source for each of those statements?? P.S. What about for the UK?
If you want a large screen and more storage: The Xperia T is for you!
If you want waterproof and 4G: The Xperia V is for you!
There are some features on the XV that the XT doesn't have, (Bravia Engine 2, for example) however, these features are only on one and not the other because the XT was made earlier, they will be available through the Jelly Bean update.
If it makes your decision any easier: I chose the Xperia T!
I chose the Xperia V. I previously had the Xperia S.
I havent once looked back, and I'm EXTREMELY satisfied with the Xperia V.
The only minus with it is the storage. Its only slightly above 3GB of usable space on the V. But ofcourse, this can easily be fixed with a decent SD-Card and App2SD.
Even the spotify cache can be moved these days.
As stated above: Xperia V has 4G, water resist, Bravia Engine 2, 342 ppi, etc etc.
But it also have cons: Can not root (Bin4ary) with locked bootloader-, ports need to be opened/closed everytime for charging or using headphones, gets very hot when using 4G, not much development or interest yet by devs, Facebook bug (portrait rotate photo upload) and no leather case in the box.
Another con: the frontcam is utter ****.
Atleast compared to the one on the back. The main camera is amazing. Never seen a camera quite like it. But the one on the front.. not so much
the one on Xperia S is slightly better.

As for the cons: maybe at some point the devs will find a way of doing this - the point of XDA is that even if it takes ageeees, the devs eventually end up finding a way of doing something even if it's really difficult - in this case root would be the example. EDIT: Bootloader can be unlocked at: http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/ . How to Root and CWM with the latest 9.0.1.D.0.10 firmware: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2060815 . Flashable unsecure kernel:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024299 (I hope the development picks up as soon as the Xperia V is available globally - so far only Asia, Sweden and Russia have the Xperia V) ; can live with the port opening/closing if it means it's waterproof ; I know I will get some flak for this, but, I can also live with the fact that it gets hot with 4G ; the facebook bug is already being looked into (and will be addressed) by Sony ; and I am also not bothered about the lack of a leather case in the box - most phones don't include cases in the box anyway.

Some phones cant be bootloader unlocked. Some can.
Thats the way it is. Mine could luckily be unlocked.
I bought mine here in Norway. And yes, Norway also got this phone for sale.
So your sources on only Asia, Sweden and Russia would be pretty good about now. Have had it in my store since early Dec.
Edit: And CM10.1 (Android 4.2) is currently available and is beeing worked on. Lets not forget that Sony gives away phones to developers (ie. CM) so it can be developed fast and proper. CM10.1 has quite a few flaws ofcourse, but in a few weeks I'd bet that most of it would be fixed.
I'm currently using CM10.1, and I'm quite content except the fact that the camera is not there, and there are some issues with the sound and the GSM. But all in all its in a pretty decent state coming to the fact that its 4.2

To be able to flash ROMs, that are not stock based you need unlocked bootloader.
You can flash ROMs with CWM that are stock based but you need root first.

Lots of pros and cons, after checking the prices tho, XV is way too expensive for those few more features it has over the XT.

Thanks for those links mate. I'll still wait a bit more before making a move but, I think I'll root for the XT.
The only worth feature the XV has over the XT is the water/dust resistance.
But, if for this feature I have to pay 100€ more then, no way!

Think you might, it's one of a few reasons why I'm going for the V rather than the T as soon as the V releases in the UK at some point during this month.
I'd pick Xperia V. I mean I would sacrifice those open/close flaps for each port for a more durable phone. As for the root, I'm just happy that the developers here do a fast and good job to get a phone rooted unlike the developers that takes about a year to get their iPod jailbroken. I mean seriously. I got my iPod since November 2012 and the jailbreak (they jailbroken an iPhone already) can take up to a year.

Guys, if there's any, then you have already seen it here by now. Let's face it, most devs got T not the TX. Maybe in time, we will have more ROMs but not at the moment.
Anyways, we can still enjoy it by rooting this lovely phone.

No it won't. The only thing that will promote more development is more developers owning the device. Putting the device in a separate subsection will hurt development since it's extremely similar to the T.

Yes, it will. Developers don't need to own a device to port for it. If there was a subsection, I'm sure even FXP would have had a port out by now. Like they have one for the Xperia V.

Concur.
Or at least put TX on the list of devices, as done with TL which is just an operator's version of TL with no difference in design and specs.
TX, at least, have other id code (lt29 vs lt30 for T), other backcover design, and as was figured out, other firmware stuff packed.
I'll give my vote for a separate TX subsection. I'm owning the TX device, and I want to see stuff for my device.
TX is produced for East European, CIS, and Asian markets, which are IMHO larger in size than USA with their T(L)

So LT29i (TX, "hayabusa") is not the Xperia TX?
^^
As far as I know, FXP doesn't own XPeria TX. There are similarities to T but it is different. I have previously asked the Moderators and they were suppose to let the person in charge know but I guess their assumption was that Xperia T and TX are the same but I think instead of TL, they should add TX as TL is exact same as T with LTE and locked bootloader.
I think I read somewhere that developers that don't own a device can not publish their work unless being tested?
Any how, even tho I have moved to Xperia T I still think TX is different and little more recognition could help users here.
As a fan of custom ROMs particularly Cyanogen, I would say I just bought the wrong phone, LoL. I can only fault myself, hehehe. Should have waited for Z , that one sure got many people ticked their interest.

First of all, take it down a notch or two. No need to get so violent.
Second of all, unless I am sorely mistaken, most development on this forum is for the T and not the TL. So, your US argument is not only invalid but also uncalled for. The latter simply happens to work with most of the stuff for the T since the devs mod it just enough so it does work.
We might or might not add the section. As of yet, we do not see a real need for it. Lastly, as entropy said... A forum will not attract developers, a device will. As for the comment about the device not being needed. You are correct, for stock ROMs passed through a kitchen, there is very little risk involved and one could get away with no testing. However, real development like aosp requires the device since you need to new able to look at broken stuff when it happens. And let's not even touch the subject of recoveries, boot loaders, etc.
Now, tone it down a few pegs. If we add it, we'll add it and you will see it. For now, there are no plans for it.
Oh, and fuzalert? Consider this a friendly warning.

Uhmm.... they are the same exact phone with the following exceptions:
TX: 4.6" screen
T: 4.3" screen
TX: 15258 MiB ROM storage
T: 30518 MiB ROM storage
TX: has built in FM radio
TX: 1750 mAh battery
T: 1850 mAh battery
TX: Bluetooth 3.0
T: Bluetooth 4.0
TX: GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA, HSUPA
T: GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA, HSUPA, HSPA+
TX: 68.6 x 131 x 11.6 millimetres; 127 gramms
T: 67.3 x 129.4 x 10.45 millimetres; 139 gramms
Every other aspect of the device is exactly the same (processor, RAM, screen type, resolution, camera, etc). To say that one of them is better than the other would be silly. In fact, considering the larger capacity battery and HSPA+ connectivity... I would say that the T is a better device... but that is just my opinion (which I am keeping for myself). Devs go to the top devices normally because they know other devs will do the same. Availability plays a big role here as well. Getting devices from Asia is not a simple (or cheap) feat by any means. I hope this answers the question regarding the "TX is better than T" that was raised earlier in the thread.
Are there development threads for the TX that I may have missed anywhere in this site? Unless the answer is yes, I am not sure if this device will be given its own subforum.

Becuase I am a little frustrated. Maybe its because I expected more and you are correct I was a bit sarcastic for which I apologize.
Still I have Sony camera and I appreciate all they do and its good that they are strong now, they diversify the market.
Lets hope that they will keep with our highest expectations and provide at least one more build - stable 4.3 or 4.4.
I'd be surprised if there are any further updates to 4.3. I doubt 4.4 will make it to the T in official form.

What I think he meant is that it's not a bug if it only happens to you. That fact that your phone isn't working for you isn't necessarily the case for everyone. The only problem I've had with my phone is all the bloatware it comes with, and the white settings; both of which can be fixed easily.

And that was exactly my point. If the phone is fully functional for others and not for you, doesn't make it a bug, it just means that whatever you are using under your specific circumstances is not working for you. It's not about people's needs, it's about the phone working as the developers expected it to.
For instance, I've heard people complain about the microphone picking up the sound of the camera focusing while recording. If that is how the developers intended it to work, then it's not a bug, regardless of whether it interferes with the black and white silent movies they are trying to produce.

With that logic we can come to the conclusion if something is not working, it is just "specific circumstances" .Bytheway, this bug somewhere I read was fixed for other phones . And also I am not alone complaining about the bugs, ok, according to you "specific circumstances". But I will not get into the further discussions

No, because if nobody can make a phone call, then it's not "specific circumstances"; if you're the only one that can't make a call, there must be some circumstance preventing you from doing so. You really don't know much about logic.
I don't think it comes for xperia t any other series which came with xperia t.
I recently stumbled upon this news
http://motoringcrunch.com/news/sony-xperia-getting-exclusive-kitkat-4-4-3-features/10018672/
Sony website still says 'under investigation' but there still might be hope for us T, TX and V users yet.
I doubt that they are actually still investigating if our devices are compatible with KitKat. More likely, they are already working on the new firmware and dont want anyone to know because then they would get thousands of messages about ETA and that stuff.
Sony cant just leave us alone with a more or less working 4.3 as the last update.
In Japan they have this law that they can only keep a appliance, gadgets or cars for a certain period of time and if they want it to keep it for a longer time they have to pay a higher tax. Maybe Sony apply that principle of this law to our devices

Just curious.. Why not OnePlus One?
Hi guys,
I would like to ask if there is any new Xperia SP rom featuring Sony's apps, framework, theme, etc (Like xperia z2/3 stock rom) and running on Kitkat 4.4.4?
I'm really sad that there aren't many developers anymore who want to create this I'm sick of 4.3
Anyway thanks for reading!
My friend have LG G2 and use Cloudy G3, ported G3 rom with all features from G3....Does it have way to port Xperia M2/E1/E3 or Z series 4.4 for SP with all features
that would be great, but i think our device isn't that popular and there are no many devs interested to do this...

That would be amazing...It's a shame though, because our device is really capable of running Kitkat :/

Of course it is capable... But sony gives us semy-finished android 4.3, i would be more than happy if we have good android 4.3, but we havn't... There are a lot worse phones that are runing stock 4.4.4...
I have never flashed so many roms on one phone and still no good rom with normal ram management and without home redraw...
Now i give up and go on official cyanogenmod and hopes for best...
I think cyanogenmod is last station until i got money for nexus 5 or something similar... ☺
Little off topic but i must say all that...
Sorry for my bad english...
Edit: one more thing...if our developers knew that there will not be an official kit kat maybe they would do more to port stock 4.4.4...we al waited for official and when our device get old SONY decided that we ar not capable... Uh...

I couldn't say it better myself! I love Sony but when I heard of abandoned Kitkat update, it felt like a knife in my back... The reason I'm not going for Cm 11 (or 12) is that I'm really used to sony's interface and apps :/ So it's kind of a bummer that we have to stick witch (good) 4.3 roms...
There should be a way to get people more attracted making SP roms...
And cool! Love the nexuses!

To be pretty honest I am looking forward to develop a ROM for SP, but I can't seem to find the right resources to learn and start

I am not developer but...kernel is the biggest problem...if you can make kernel for sony 4.4.4, rom port shouldn't be that hard... So if you have free time and decides do start from beginning look at the kernel development...

You think so? Would love to try but i wouldn't have a clue myself...I'm not even a developer Maybe looking for someone? And then ask someone else to port the kitkatrom to sp?
