[Q] What's up with boot animation - Moto X Q&A

This subforum doesn't really look like the right place for this question, but I'm trying to follow forum rules.
I'm rooted.
Using esfile explorer, I downloaded the awesome bootanimation.zip file located here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2334927
I renamed the old boot animation zip file (as not that) and pasted the new one into system/media as instructed by video.
I check the permissions of both files and they are the same.
Can't get the new animation to run. Just blank. I reversed the process and the old one ran fine again.
I have two questions.
1. Why would this not work for me?
2. With one big .zip file, how do I know which animation I'm getting? How do I control which boot animation runs?

You should try flashing the boot image with fastboot.
fastboot flash boot boot.img

No no....the bootanimation is not the boot.img, absolutely do not try flashing a bootanimation.zip as a boot.img

Woops my mistake! I just recently flashed a boot image to get rid of that nasty bootloader unlock screen. Got confused between the two. My apologies

[Q] N1 will not boot after trying to root GB

OK so I have a N1 with the bootloader unlocked. I had the latest version of FroYo 2.2.2 and root. I updated to GB and lost root so I tried the method from the link in the first post of this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=613437
Since I am already unlocked I did this step "On a Windows machine – Just double click the ‘install-superboot-windows.bat’ file , pretty simple ain’t it?"
I reset my N1 and now it hangs with a big X on the screen.
Could someone please help? it would be greatly appreciated.
After looking at the batch file I ran I guess I flashed a boot image that does NOT work? What image do I need to flash and can I use the same method but edit the batch file to flash this correct boot image?
Go to Developers forum, look for Gingerbread ROM threads (there are a couple), and look for a flashable insecure boot image. If you have custom recovery - you can flash it in recovery, if you don't - you can unpack it and flash it with fastboot.
flashed boot.img using fastboot and it works
I pulled the boot.img file from the GB non rooted rom from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=968396
then I used this command "fastboot-windows.exe flash boot boot.img" and it flashed the boot.img and now it boots into GB.
Thanks for your help, I have some reading to do so I can understand how to flash a custom recovery using fastboot.
You can use (updated today) guide from Wiki, in my signature.

Would you mind going into a bit more depth? I did the EXACT same thing, hanging X boot screen and everything, and what you've written here makes a little sense, but I wish it made a bit more.

sure I can give it a try,
ok so I assume you downloaded the RootingGoogleNexusOne.zip file and extracted it. Then you clicked the install-superboot-windows.bat file while your phone was connected to your PC in fastboot mode (pressing the power button while holding down the trackball).
If this is correct then what you did like me is flashed a new boot.img file and your phone wont boot.
To fix I did the following.
Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=968396 and download the Stock GRI40 (2.3.3 Gingerbread) ROM.
This will download the Nexus_One_GRI40_unrooted.zip file. Extract the boot.img file from this zip and put it in the same place you extracted the RootingGoogleNexusOne.zip file to.
Then you need to reconnect your phone in fastboot mode again.
Edit the install-superboot-windows.bat file and change it so it looks like this "fastboot-windows.exe flash boot boot.img" as long as you have the boot.img file you extracted above in the same folder all you need to do is double click install-superboot-windows.bat file and it will update your boot partition so your phone will boot again.
hope this helps but don't blame me if you mess up your phone.

Red OnePlus Logo-Boot Reboot Animation from Chinese ROM

This is the Logo (splash screen), bootanimation and downanimation from the Chinese version of the OnePlus One.
Requirements:
ADB and Fastboot knowledge
Boot and down animations require root
Logo requires unlocked bootloader
Use a root file explorer and navigate to /system/media rename bootanimation.zip to bootanimation.old
copy bootanimation.zip and rbootanimation.zip and change the permissions to match the other files:
for logo:
boot into fastboot mode and run the following command:
fastboot flash LOGO logo.img

Pretty basic if you ask me not that a boot animation is really that important but you'd think they'd put a bit more effort into it.

Thanks. I prefer this to our white version with the crappy ANDROID text at the bottom.
Are there any other logo.img files for this phone? Or any apps that will create them?

any way to get the red boot logo but our cyanogenmod animation? I'm wondering if a combo would look sexier.

Actually I did that. I have red boot logo at the beginning and then it changes to cm animation. What I did? I flashed zip from this OP ColorOs, but it was a crap (sorry mate) so I restored my CM11s from backup in twrp and voila!
So this means we can create custom bootsplash using (probably) the same method that was originally pioneered on the G1? (It also worked on Mytouch & G2)
Sweet!
@graffixnyc
Thanks for your help.
I'm wondering if there's any way for the logo.img flashing to be done as a flashable zip? I ask only because I flash nightlies a lot (CM11) and its hard for me to plug in all the time to do fastboot flash LOGO logo.img when I'm traveling for work like 80% of the time I know first world problems. How to convert the logo.img to a flashable zip?
Also is there any way for logo.img to be modified so the fastboot logo isn't Chinese but rather what it is in stock?

I don't know exactly how you do it, but I know you can make a flashable zip run a normal shell script. In this shell script you can dd the image to the proper partition... it's a bit sketchier though IMO..
Why do you need to re-flash? The logo partition isn't affected by flashing nighties. It should stick around between flashes.

No the logo is changed to the white boot logo after flashing nightlies.
The splash or the boot animation? The splash should be unaffected.

The splash. I've done this fastboot flash logo logo.img many times and it works, but once I flash the next CM11 Nightly, its gone. I have to keep doing this everytime, meaning I need to do it on a specific computer. Kinda annoying.
The animation isn't too hard to replace, although I'm wondering if CM's init.d scripts can help preserve the file.

There used to be a place you could stash it on removable media that would be picked up instead of the stock system bootanimation.
Anyone know if that still works?
Well, the partition where the splash screen is known. It's possible to make a .zip that we can flash with every nightly. Personally, I'm too scared to experiment with that. That partition is related to the bootloader, so it's very possible to brick our OPOs with a .zip to flash the splash screen after every nightly. Honestly, I'm just fine with having to reboot into the bootloader to flash the splash screen after every flash.

It depends on the ROM you're using though.
Typically works with all AOSP roms.
However, I've found that bootanimations don't seem to run fully with the OPO phone for some odd reason.
It's like the animation runs once, doesn't loop and then the screen goes dark until the phone boots up completely.

Any chance to get the original, out of the box CM splash screen here from the One Plus one? Want to use it on another phone.
Thanks in advice
Logo works.
Bootanimation and rebootanimation don't @CM 11 Nightly from 09/24/2014. Any idea?

Thanks you for the guide. Got the sexy white moto logo back instead of anoying bootloader meessage.
Thank you man,
Good morning friends!
Could anyone help me?
I have a problem at startup in Moto X Play.
After unlocking the bootloader my device does not boot more straight to the android system.
The startup always falls on the screen Fastboot start.
I've given recovery factory ... reinstalled the original system via fastboot ... I tried everything, including using RSD Lite to no avail.
I do not know what else to do. Help me, because although the appliance is working, it's uncomfortable every time I restart it he always fall into the Fastboot start screen
.
Sorry my English.

Did you test the online update? I still doubt it works. No one answered my question. But as long as I don't have the possibility to restore original state, I don't dare to install it.

I am in a custom rom (Bliss 6), not sure about update. Since flashing that logo.bin, on reboot just shows Android with white background, no more warning texts and also Moto bootamination.
All three logos working good after flash it, but bootanimation did not starting. I'm copy bootanimation.zip in /system/media/ and set permissions, but no success.

I think the vendor did it by edited their .tot file with corresponding .dll before flashing it with LG flash tools. http://www.lgbbs.com/thread-7260-1-1.html
Well not sure if it has a unlocked no but you absolutely need a unlocked boot loader to even touch the stock recovery

Under developer's option, there is a check box to enable oem unlock bootloader, so I don't think it was the cause. I can use adb to boot into fastboot mode. And with Flashfire.apk developed by the well known developer "Chainfire", I can even backup the whole phone and flash .zip file without custom recovery. However, If the system crash and cannot boot, you cannot get into the app to restore it. So, porting the custom recovery is crucial.
Use fastboot to flash the recovery image then?
Pretty sure the check box for enable oem unlock bootloader is on every v10 version. It's just that the only one that it actually *works* on and actually unlocks the bootloader is the USA t-mobile version.

You can't replace the recovery while the bootloader is locked. The only partition than can be touched n modified is system.

Remove it, no. That's what shows when the bootloader is doing its thing before the system boot animation takes over.
Replace it, yes. Lots of custom one posted in this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/themes-apps/automated-boot-logos-moto-x-using-t3276236
If you wanted, it sounds like you could use that "Motorola Boot Logo Maker" mentioned in the OP there to make your own custom logo.bin to transition to your animation more seamlessly. I've never tried it myself.

Follow the directions in the thread. I have not read it very carefully.
In general, what works is, if you end up with a logo.bin then
Code:
fastboot flash logo /path/to/logo.bin
If you extract a zip and it has a logo.bin and a meta-inf folder in it, then it's made to be flashable. Install it with twrp.
I've never used flashify to install a moto logo. Not saying it can't, but I've never done it.
