Can't get native tether to work, even with root - Moto X Q&A

Hi, I am getting desperate here.
I have an unlocked and rooted dev edition verizon wireless moto x.
I have followed the instructions in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2443562
Using that apk I cannot get wireless tether to work, can anyone help me to figure this out?
I have followed the instruction in that thread and it has never worked. Entitlements has always crashed.
I did my own thing where I left the odex in, only renamed the apk in priv-app, and then substituted in the modified apk. This worked for a month before entitlements started crashing.
I just tried the latest suggestion in the thread linked above as well and still entitlements crashes. (rename the odex and apk in priv-app, put in the modified apk, adjust the rights, copy to app, reboot).
I'm doing this all through ES explorer with root.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have Xposed installed? If so, just install the "Moto Tether" module. I did it last night on my unlocked, rooted, DE VZW Moto X, and it works great.

You sir, are a god damn GENIUS!
I still kind of wish I had been able to figure it out myself though, but I will take this win and run with it!

if you saw my latest reply, i never said that I renamed the files, which is where I think you were having the problem.
640k said:
i didn't rename the original files. maybe that's the trick?? i simply copied the new ones on top of the old ones. also, leave .odex in the priv-app folder alone. DON'T copy it to the app folder.

I did see you copied over the old files but I am not that brazen... I also didn't copy the .odex into app

[Q] Impossible to Root

Dear friends,
I own a razr i, initially on retail GB, with unlocked bootloader.
Tried to root, verified with various apps and seemed ok.
Unfortunately, supersu wouldn't update, lucky patcher said that root is not done, and in general, any app which needs root to work, wouldn't work for me.
I then installed the latest retail EU ics (81.5.40002.xt890.retail.en.eu), rerooted with all the possible ways through win7 and mac, but i still get the same error messages.
Any ideas why?

You need the update-binary from the RAZR i, they use the ARM7 binary for that flashable zip. Any OTA update or flashable for the RAZR i has this file.
Like RAZRiRoot2.zip....

u have to drop it in your system apps folder and then reboot your phone. Use Root Explore or I think ES file explorer does it to with root enabled
if u need the apk again, here it is:

I don't think that this .apk works with rooted HTC One because my One with CyanogenMod 10 -m7 Nightly can't run the apk. It says that TV has stopped. Solutions?

Ah that would probably be it. They haven't even made the LTE network default so that might show they still have work to do on the Nightly.

Thanks for the info.
but this means i'm gonna have to root my phone to get access to that folder...is there any other way u may know how without having to root it?
can i just put the apk file on my phone and enable installation of "apps from unknown sources"...then using astro file manager open the app which would allow installation of the file?like described on this site on how to install apk files to my phone without google play:
https://jiffy.zendesk.com/entries/2...l-APK-files-to-my-Android-without-Google-Play
was hoping not to root my phone until after i get the OTA 4.2.2 update and even then still wait a while cuz i'm quite happy with stock sense 5.0 for now.
if rooting is the only way guess i'll just live without it not really missing it but still would have liked to have it.
thanks for the info

No because this is a system app, not a regular app. U must have root. And my question is, why don't u just root? I've been on 4.2.2 for a long time now because I have root. I'm s off now and gonna upgrade my firmware right away as well. Waiting for ota updates takes way to long and u miss out on the goodies
I strongly recommend getting the all-in-one toolkit by hasoon and flashing the venom rom to get the most positive experience outta your phone

Can't find apps to block OTA on rooted Moto X

Hello, everyone. Long time reader, first time poster.
I just finished rooting my new Developer's Edition GSM unlocked Moto X. As I started to freeze the usual apps that are necessary in order to stop OTA notices and lessen the likelihood of sending my device into a bootloop by mistake, I noticed that the apps that I had on my Verizon Droid Maxx aren't here. I saw some threads that stated that I needed to freeze update.apk, MotorolaOTA, FOTA, and rename otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.bak.
Of all of those steps, I've only been able to do two of them: freezing MotorolaOTA and renaming otacerts.zip.
Where can I find the other two apps to freeze? Is it even necessary if I've already frozen MotorolaOTA and renamed otacerts? When I had my Droid Maxx, I was unable to click on System Updates in About Phone without the app crashing. Here, after freezing and renaming these two apps, I can still check for updates, which leaves me a little worried.
Thank you for your help.
3C_OTA.APK is one you want to rename.. It exists in /system/apps or /system/priv-app (I forget which).

Great, I went ahead and renamed that one 3C_OTA.APK.BAK. I can still check for updates in System Updates, which is something I couldn't do on my Droid Maxx after freezing all the OTA apps.
Is that normal for this phone? Are there any other apps / files I need to take care of?
Thanks for the reply!
Any other ideas? The fact that I can still check for an update makes me nervous. I'm just trying to confirm that this was all I needed to do.

MotorolaOTA 1.0 is what I froze on my retail X (while it was downloading an update) and as soon as it was frozen, the download icon in the status bar disappeared :good: I'm not sure where the apk is located to move/rename since I used tibu to freeze it.

[FIX] Unfortunately, Update Device has stopped.

http://d-h.st/tTn
Flash after the ROM giving you the error.
I'm assuming it only happens to Sprint users, so it also includes the fixed Sprint APN.
Enjoy.
Works great. Thanks.
I don't think a carrier would have anything to do with it at all since this is the Nexus 5, and carriers have absolutely nothing to do with any aspect of the device, both software and hardware.
It does have a lot to do with it actually.
Great fix, seriously a life saver I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure it out. The closest I got was to just delete the apk from the rom if possible before flash.
Thanks so much
Going to try this tonight. Been pulling out my hair trying to figure this out with some roms
Well, whatever it does it worked. I flashed this after installing the AICP 5.0 nightlies that were giving me update device crashes. They no longer occur... thanks
@Lethargy you make me lol in every thread, brighten my days. Hats off to you ??
At least for me, while this zip does make the error message go away, it's not actually installing a working replacement. If you use a file manager and go to /system/app/OmaDmClient and try to install the apk within, you will get the standard install confirmation, not the one for updating existing software (which it should do if the app was already correctly working). So while this is technically a "fix", it's the same as just deleting the buggy apk.

Thinking I skipped setting perms in a rush. Either way, it shouldn't be needed for too long. I flashed to 5.0.1 without needing anything besides the fixed APN. I do see an issue with prl/profile update however.

It should work, all it does is replace an apk and insert apns to /etc
Tried on my LG G2 LS980 with FreedomPop, but it didn't fix the Update Device error. Any clue for the failure?
This "fix" is crap. Don't flash random stuff to your device. No documentation? No source for the included APK?

[help] Need Google Download Manager APK

Ok call me stupid if you want but the thing is I deleted Google Download Manager from my Moto G Second Generation, thinking it was just a bloat-ware... The APK to re-install it is gone as well... (I got carried away with all that root power).
Now I can't use Google Play Store anymore... Didn't knew those two had a thing for each other...
I've searched for that open gapps project but apparently it don't have the download manager apk that I need... If I'm wrong pls advise!!!
Can anyone be kind enough to upload their apk somewhere so I don't need to flash my phone? Too many hours on installing **** already... I don't wanna do it again!!!
My Device is a Moto G Second Generation (2014) stock 5.0.2 Lollipop version, but rooted!
I appreciate already any help!!!

Try to move it with Root Explorer in /system/app. It may not install normally because the apk is not being installed in /system.
Don't forget to give the correct permissions on the apk.
