I bought official Samsung adapter from their website, it is the one specifically listed for the Tab 3 8. Here is how it's advertised:
This Micro USB to USB connection pocket-size device turns your Galaxy Tab into a USB host, allowing you to connect compatible USB accessory devices such as keyboards, mice, thumb drives and more to your Tab.
When it arrived yesterday, the manual lists two compatible devices: USB memory stick and a Samsung laser printer. Needless to say, I am very disappointed & hope I can return it.
As I well understand, you don't even try to connect mouse, keyboard via USB? Just give it a try. It should works. I don't have Samsung OTG cable, but owning a different brand and everything works(pendrives, mouse, keyboard).
Sorry if I misunderstand you

I tried a USB hard drive, locked it up.
Do you have HDD with separate AC? If not you might never connect with that kind of HDD

I did try a mouse - it works, but I see no value to that when I have a touch screen. I only got the adapter so I could watch movies from my Passport without having to copy them.
LLoyd
I just tried my thumbdrive/OTG and it worked fine.
I then tried my Toshiba external hard drive, and it recognized it on the tablet, but
the external drive kept beeping, and I could not feel the drive spinning up. I took the external off
and plugged it into my computer and it worked fine.
Im wondering that since the external isn't powered with an adapter, but relies on the juice from
the source, maybe the tablet doesn't have enough to spin it up to work.
I don't have an external hard drive with a separate power source to check.
Could this be whats wrong ? I agree with Marek and think it needs the power source.
I haven't tried a wireless mouse and keyboard but will next.
Im using the StickMount APK also.

External power might be a reason, I don't have one that uses external power.
Per the 'manual', the max size of a thumbdrive is 32GB, may also be why my 2TB Passport didn't work.
Good point about the 32gb limit. I got ahold of a external powered and will check it. Should know in about an.hour and will post the results.

I plugged a 250gb powered external HD, that was on a Win 7 machine, into the OTG for my T310.
It recognized it, but came up as empty, and unsupported file system.
Since there was already stuff on it, I didn't want to format it or anything to see if
I could get further with it.
But it did recognize it as a drive. I don't know why it couldn't see anything on it though.
Im gonna see if I can get a 64gb thumbdrive and try that. I know the 32gb works.

My 32 gb worked fine, it's just not useful for the reason I bought the adapter. I really wanted stream, via the tablet, off my passport. Oh well. Stick it in a drawer & sell it with the tablet when the time comes.
First of all android devices dont support NTFS formated Drives out of the box.
Second , most external usb hard drives require more than 500 milliamps to 1amp in order to work.
Solutions,
Get ntfs support from the play store.
Use external power supply for hard-drives.
External HDD

I've tested a WD MyBook 2TB external on my tab and it works fine. My hard drive was formatted as ext4 from my linux box and mounted up just fine. Data transfers as fast as you can write it.
External power is a must.
How long do you think that battery can spin a drive?

It would be great with some sort of expectation, what purpose did you buy this usb cable for?
somebody connected a RCA cable with adapter microUSB/USB?
For the power supply: maybe an external powered USB hub? It won't be portable but it might work.
I have a Sprint LTE TAB 3 7.0, I cant seem to find a Microusb to HDMI, any thoughts?
Thanks

in case no one had experience with it, i guess I'll have to find out and report back
What I wanna know is, will it charge it through the Micro USB port?
well the USB is two way so theoretically it should work right?
That's what I was thinking...

If you try this, can you report if it's possible to charge through this while mounting sdcard or using USB. I haven't got the Nexus 7 yet, and will only consider it if it's possible to charge while using usb host. But i'm curious about being able to use external storage and charging at the same time, cause i want a 7" tablet to replace the screen in my car.
I tried to read in the other threads about external storage, and quite a few is asking about this as well, but i haven't been able to find an answer to the question.

That doesn't work with my galaxy note since the reader can only read from 1 source at a time (e.g. It can't read sd card and usb at the same time). I also tried plugging the reader into my note's micro usb port and plugging the charging cable into the reader's micro usb port and it does not charge the phone.
Havn't tried it on the n7 since I havn't got around to rooting it yet to use with stickmount but I reckon the results will be the same.

Thanks for the reply!
I think the only possible solution for this might be an OTG-Y cable
Found this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p10LgZFIawo
Which might work, the question is just if the Nexus 7 accepts it. Anyhow, in his description he writes that it's to power connected USB elements, but in the video he claim that the tablet is charging.
Why doesn't someone make this into a dock with a back?
Then you could have a memory card installed, connected to a keyboard/mouse, and power. Then you could just dock the N7 and have access to all that.
that would be sweet
does it work then?

I wasn't going to bother rooting cause there was nothing I needed that the device didn't have as in but looks like I now have a reason to go read the rooting tutorial I saw somewhere around here
Looks like there is a chance that my wish has been granted so i will be able to charge and use microUSB as OTG at the same time.
http://translate.google.com/transla...aer-asus-officiella-tillbehoer-exklusivt.html
Hope so
Note: I haven't looked for a solution for this for quite a while, but last time i checked it seemed as a kernel hack was needed.
With this thing I can just watch video and music that I have on the card directly, I don't need to transfer it to the device or anything right?
Sidenote, will the nexus 7 show up with a drive letter when I plug it into my computer after rooting??
I have recently gotten Nexus 7 and I want to add more storage. I want to use a USB drive and i know I can use a USB-OTG. Is it possible to read, write, and copy from the USB when plugged in? How and with what apps? I'm an android noob BTW so yeah. If I have to root it, how?
Look up WugFresh root kit, and root your device. Then you need to install the app StickMount by chainfire from the play store, and a file manager I'd you don't have one already. Lastly you will need a USB OTG cable (I've bought a few off amazon).
This is what I did way back when, if methods have changed someone post please.

With some custom kernels, you wont even need stickmount. For best compatibility, make sure to format the external hdd to fat fs. I use 2 160Gb hdd's with mine. A 2.5" wd passport when out and about, and a 3.5" while "docked" at home. If your gonna buy an otg, then just buy the y cable. It gives you otg+charging ability at the same time, provided you use a kernel which provides that support.
Best kernels for this is Timurs (with or without bis custom rom), or metallices m-kernel.

For Rooting your Nexus, one of the best Guides I have found is the one at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1741395
OR if you are using a Debian based Linux Distro, I've found this to be the best, which includes pictures as well:
http://bernaerts.dyndns.org/android/...nexus-7-tablet
Both provide very clear instructions on what needs to be done. My Windows machine is having driver issues so I used Ubuntu and everything is flawless with those steps.
I've learned that toolkits can be useful, but what happens if something breaks during the process or does not complete like it should? Knowing how to do it via the steps provided above will only help you in the future. Let me know what you think!
After Rooting, I personally use StickMount (v.2.20) with my OTG cable and it works excellent! You can find it in the Play store if needed. It will allow you to Mount and Unmount your USB thumbdrives/harddrives BUT it definitely sucks down your battery, especially when using a larger capacity HD such as my 500 GB External HD.
Here is also a link to the OTG cable that I purchased and used:
http://www.amazon.com/eForCity-Micro-USB-OTG-Adapter/dp/B005QX7KYU/ref=pd_cp_pc_1
I'm using stickmount with an OTG cable I just purchased. Works fine with my camera but it won't recognise my WD usb 3.0 hd.
I bet the reason for this is because when using USB 3.0 it requires more power to push at the higher speeds, even though it is still using backwards compatible 2.0...

Is this USB bus-powered or are you using an adapter?
USB 1.1/2.0 can only source 500mA = 2.5W and that often isn't enough to power a spinning HDD. I wouldn't expect to get much juice out of a tablet or smartphone anyway. Putting extra regulator circuitry on the board just for USB requires space, cooling, and power.
If the HDD didn't come with an AC adapter, you can try connecting it through a powered hub.
I know the KFHD7 can't power things plugged into the micro USB but assuming a USB hub or power from another source just having the data cable plug into it should work, right? I've tried a USB2 HDD and USB wireless mouse/keyboard and they don't work though, although they do on my Samsung Galaxy S3 using same apps to mount in case of the USB2 HDD.
If this is possible what am I missing to make it work?

Damn, lack of USB OTG support is a real shame, I was hoping to use the KFHD7 as a portable media centre/laptop replacement but it might be impossible by the sound of it.
One thing i forgot to mention is that my KFHD7 is modified with TWRP and CM 10.1, runs really smooth compared to the stock software. But is USB OTG stillnot possible like it was on the original Kindle Fire? Seeing as this newer one uses a second bootloader and all.

Hi, I'm wondering what's wrong with OTG Support in this model. I'm using regular OTG cable with 2A powered USB Hub and after connecting all devices are detected properly but no USB Mass Storage can be mounted. Keyboard, Mouse working well Sound Card from Creative is detected but not working (nvm) and any USB stick is detected by few mounting apps but none of them can be mounted.
Any kernel mods are needed or maybe just decent app??

I had it for my old Atrix for HDD's and it's needed 2A. For standard keyboard+mouse and some usb stick You wont need more than standard 1A, 4 port USB hub for max 10$. I paid 12$ for 2A powered. I don't remember brand but before I used 1A powered "no name" brand and it worked too so use any min 1A powered and it should work.
Found this on amazon for the Vivo tab, which uses the same 36-pin connector as the TF701. So I bought it for $20US hoping it would work with the 701 and it does! Plugged in the OTG adapter and attached my sandisk extreme usb 3 thumbdrive. Used the included SD/uSD card adapter to connect a couple SD cards and had no problems. Didn't do any speed tests or anything, just wanted to make sure they worked, and they did.

Also can you simultaneously power the device and provide input using a usb hub(plug in keyboard and mouse for example)?
I went to the computer store. Bought the following:
The adapter which is 2.0 by the way.
USB 3.0 HUB with Power Adaper.
A male to A male cable.
While connected to a the HUB, and while the device is on its says "NOT CHARGING". I turn it off(tablet), Not getting a charge while connected to a the hub. It also drained it while the tablet is off. Nevermind the hub for power.
NO CHARGE FROM HUB
While connected to the PC it drained the power down to 6% then went back up to 50%. Not sure about that because it seemed to charge while it was off.
NO CHARGE FROM PC
As for the power adapter that comes with the tablet to it. Not charging while ON. Turn it off and no charge.
NO CHARGE FROM ASUS POWER ADAPTER
SO no it doesnt charge in any practical sense from this VIVO adapter as far as i can tell. Maybe its the MALE to MALE cable. I dont know. But its not worth trying if there a chance of drain killing it.
Unfortunately from the adapter there is no media connection or usb debugging to pc or usb hub afiak.
NO MEDIA CONNECTION OR USB DEBUGGING
The good news is that the device can connect to the USB HUB and the keyboard , mouse and thumb drive work flawlessly together.
