[Q] Please don't tell me I bricked it? - Moto X Q&A

Guys, I really need help, just got my phone today and decided to root it (stupid move), I unlocked the boot loader using Motorola's online unlocker thing, got it done, flashed a custom file called (ghost-boot-new) and the phone booted fine with SuperSU and everything, but then I discovered that my wifi doesn't work anymore, try setting the toggle to on it flips back to off and the screen says "Turning Wi-Fi on.." and nothing happens.
Now I can't seem to understand how to recover back, I read you can relock your bootloader but I don't know where to find my stock image, the phone is Rogers Canada I think, 139.12.36.ghost_row.rci.en.ca is my system image.
If you can shed any light on what I can do, please help!

rooting isn't a stupid move.
Just flash your fw version (139.12.36) http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0
Then... Flash twrp 2.6.3.1 recovery and chose install superSU/root option on it.
Twrp 2.6.3.1 : http://goo.im/devs/Hashcode/motox/unlocked/twrp-2.6.3.1-ghost-4.4.img (this work on 4.2 & 4.4)
All process takes around 10 minutes

Only thing I'd change from the above is use cmw on 4.2.2.
I have the same phone and that twrp version gave me bootloops if I restored a nandroid. And I couldn't install the other twrp. Cmw works great.

Just like to warn people.....the twrp restore bootloop problem led me to having to use rsd to restore. Pain in the behind. Lol

Are you guys using the proper TWRP version for the android version you're running? I'm using 2.6.3.1 and have no issues restoring backups of 4.4

Funny you say that. Nope....the 4.2.2 twrp failed the install...after many attempts. And the 4.4 one installs and works fine. But trying to do a restore boot loops you.
So I installed cwm and live with it cause it works great. Might try philz tho.

You're never bricked (well, maybe 99%of the time) with an unlocked bootloader.

[Q] Changed hosts file then lost write permissions

I got my AT&T Moto X yesterday and rooted it on 4.2.2 with SlapMyMoto.
Upgraded to 4.4
Used AdAway
Upgraded to 4.4.2
Lost write permissions, write protection re-enabled
Don't want an edited hosts file that is stuck like that, can't revert permanently
Screwed?
Any ideas?
You lost write permission when you updated to 4.4.2

I know, but now I can't even restore to stock so I'm basically stuck on 4.4.2 with a modified hosts file and semi-root…
How can I go to stock? I don't care what version?

because write protection became enabled, any changes you make to /system (like reverting to the stock hosts file) will be undone at power off/on. In other words, yes you are stuck with the modified hosts file.
To get back to 100% stock at this point would involve flashing stock system.img with mfastboot, or the entire rom using RSDLite, however this will mean you also lose what little root you retained, AND the 4.4.2 SBF hasn't leaked out yet for ATT so you'd have to wait. (if/when it does leak, it will surely appear on -> http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0 )

Well, you've got miss-matched versions of files/partitions on your phone. You can TRY to flash the recovery.img from the T-Mobile 4.4.2 SBF, otherwise you'll have to wait until the ATT SBF leaks out.
BUT because of the state you are in... I would just sit tight and wait for the ATT 4.4.2 SBF, then use RSDLite to completely flash your phone and get everything, all parts, back to 100% stock.
Yes....do what Kid Joe suggests and wait. If you try the wrong thing now, you could very well brick.

[Q]Questions for XT1064 variant

Been flashing my devices forever but they have all been samsungs and my phones for the past 4 years so im looking for help
I got a XT1064 for my wife who is still using a Nokia Pureview 808
Its a great little device and I wanted to root and install a customer recovery for it for backup reasons
Ive been over all the forums many times but its never clear 100% that the stuff works for the XT1064
I can root and unlock the bootloader with no issues my main questions are
Is it confirmed that TWRP 2.8.0.1 will work for this variant? If not what recovery would you recommend (links if possible would be great)
I know there are not really many ROM currently but did see some that are pretty much stock but optimized(more ram etc) are any confirmed to work ok on the XT1064?
This is my wifes phone so I cant have her without a working device too long and I am less willing to test since its not my device
Any help would be appreciated

TWRP 2.8.0.1 does run on the XT1064, however it seems to be buggy. In my experience that recovery will randomly cause the phone to reboot for no reason. I personally prefer CWM, but TWRP 2.7xx has been reported as working well
P.S, don't ever flash your XT1064 back to stock with the mfastboot commands, I did it with the appropriate image for the US GSM model, and now my wifi is dead, and I cant find a workaround
Wish I had an XT1064 nandroid backup!

Blur_Version.21.11.17.titan_retuaws.retuaws.en.US was the one I flashed, so it should have worked, but unfortunately... :crying:
A user in another thread suggested that I flash the latest OTA update, but the problem is, the latest OTA update uploaded here isn't for the 1064, so the stock recovery refused to flash it, and with no wifi or mobile data, I can't download the OTA from the phone

[Q] Moto G 2014 vs Nexus 5 (after Lollipop)

Forgive me if this is a repeat. I did a search but didn't find anything the same.
I sold my LG G2 and was looking for an inexpensive replacement. The Nexus 5 is an obvious choice as it is powerful, proven and inexpensive.
But I saw that Staples here in Canada has an unlocked Moto G 2014 for a good price and decided to test drive.
Used Nexus 5 = same $$$ as new Moto G
Overall, a great device to be sure!
But... I do feel a little lag here and there. I can live without LTE if needed but lag bothers me.
So, since my G doesn;t have Lollipop yet, I am looking for insight from those who have the upgrade.
Does Lollipop smooth out the Moto G enough to make it a contender vs the Nexus?
Or is it a minor upgrade and not much smoother than the G on Kitkat?
Thanks in advance.
Nothing will change the fact that the Nexus 5 has a Snapdragon 800 and 2GB of RAM, whilst the Moto G has a Snapdragon 400 and 1GB of RAM. Assuming you account for the difference by running less background processes and multitasking less intensively, the Moto G is perfectly suitable as a general workhorse, but it will always hit performance bottlenecks earlier than a Nexus 5, regardless of what version of the operating system is installed.
It does seem that processes are killed pretty aggressively at the moment on Motorola's Android 5.0, just as they are on 4.4.4, but this can be adjusted to suit your preferences. It's a case of trading redraws for a bit more lagginess in general. Ultimately, if you can't adjust to the lesser performance of the Moto G and can do without Micro SD support, dual SIMs (if you have the XT1068/9) and no warranty, a secondhand Nexus 5 in good condition is a better choice.
Thank you kindly for that very solid response. I will keep an eye out for a used NX5.
On that note, you have to love when Staples of all places offers unlocked phones with a 14 day return policy.

I was faced with the same choice, but use 2 SIMs and don't like to carry 2 phones. I almost grabbed a Nexus 5 16GB for a little more than the Moto G.... The other great thing about the Nexus is you can testdrive Ubuntu and Sailfish...
The multitasking issue is the BIGGEST negative against Moto G 2014. If you ever plan to use maps and another app like chrome or music, or want to listen to music and another app (maps/chrome etc) at the same time, DO NOT get the Moto G 2014 as it is not able to do so. If you do not plan on doing any multitasking, then it is a worthy phone for the price. Has minimal lag, good screen, dual speakers, sd car slot.

The second update of lollipop addressed the issue of memory management which caused lag and the phone is MUCH faster and smoother and I would recommend it to anyone now that the issue is fixed. I have tested the phone out and have not experienced lag ever since updating.
I am waiting for the update anxiously. I have Consumer Cellular branded Moto G 2014, which I manually flashed to 5.0 after installing the retail rom, but am unable to flash the 2nd OTA update and get the signature error

So to flash the second 5.0 OTA, I should go back to 4.4.4? This doesn't sound right.

When you go back to stock you flash each file in stock recovery. Flash one file then boot up into android and set everything up, then go back into stock recovery and flash the other file.
If you're getting the partition size error that means TWRP flashed successfully. Just use volume down to select recovery then press volume up to enter TWRP. Then you can flash the file I provided.

[Q] XT1097 unstoppable reboot

Hello mighty XDA developers,
Reason(?):
I have f**ked my XT1097 (Bootloader unlocked, Telus, Canada). I tried to root my Lollipop phone with bhp090808's multi-tool V4.1. Somehow the tool was unsuccessful on rooting my phone. It installed supersu and that was that.
With Supersu installed, apps were somehow unable to download from Google Play, therefore I disabled it and the problem was gone. I was then in vacation so I have no access of Windows so I left it at that for a week, phone ran normally.
After I got back form vacation, I reverted my phone back to stock recovery and 4.4.4 with the Multi-tool, in order to try re-rooting the phone. I might or might not have started the root process when I was in 4.4.4 (I honestly don't remember). Afterwards my phone's wifi stopped working (cannot be turned on or off, with the status of "Turning Wifi On"). The phone also reboots itself after around 1 minute.
I have a bad flash, now whenever I update to Lollipop, my wifi stops working and I get nonstop reboots. Phone is perfectly fine when I stay in KK
and I have lost my IMEI
Tried methods:
- I have tried erasing the phone by going into the backup and reset menu to reset the phone, the same problems remain.
- I have tried clearing the phone by erasing data and catch from stock recovery, the same problems remain.
- I have tried using the Muti-Tool to revert back to stock. but then the phone restarts every time before adb can do anything
- I have tried using RSD, flashing the Brazilian XT1097 .img into the phone. Despite a successfully flash, the same problems remain.
Problem:
- Phone's wifi is stuck
- Phone keeps rebooting (safe mode or not)
- When phone is powered off, it will restart itself and then go on the reboot loop again (even when i boot into safe mode and turn it off form there)
- Phone does not turn off without rebooting itself other than powering off from Recovery
- Phone Cannot be charged
Help needed!
I really messed my phone up and need help! Please can someone suggest a solution? I dont have TWRP so I cannot wipe system and reinstall

If you are not completely stock 100%, it is best not to take the OTA b/c the OTA is a patch.
I would revert back to whatever version of KK system you did before, and also have a stock recovery. Then use Motorola Device Manager to get back to L. MDM should flash the correct version of system for your device.

Motorola Device Manager should download it and install it to your phone if you flash back to kit kat and then run MDM with your phone connected to your computer.

You have to flash the stock Telus firmware.
Use rsdlite or mfastboot to return your phone to stock 5.0.1.
You can download it here: (yes it will take a few hours)

All you can do is try, you have flashed back to KK before so you know it doesn't brick your phone. I am only talking about flashing the SYSTEM (system.img) back to kit kat, not the bootloader or the partition table. If you have a custom recovery, I don't think it will work though. I think you need a stock recovery. The recovery can be lollipop.
When I flash my Verizon XT1096 back to kitkat system, with lollipop stock recovery, MDM will flash my system back to lollipop.
I understand about the issue with the different models, and I can't tell you whether MDM will have a problem with that or not, but if it does, it will just do nothing. You have flashed back to XT1095 KK before so I don't see why it would hurt to see what MDM does. It will be able to tell you have an XT1097 so it won't try to install a system for an XT1095.

Hi steve, I am getting "Failed flashing process. 3/21 flash partition "gpt.bin" -> Phone returned FAIL
Did i do something wrong?
EDIT: replaced the gpt file and the motoboot file with the 5.0.1 file.
EDIT 2: at 4.4.4 rectca, imei and radio is back, but there is no update to L, if I rsd the 5.0.1 rectca, the same issue comes back
What else have you all flashed, if you tried the 5.1 soak you likely will have to skip flashing gpt and motoboot.

I have tried flashing the 5.0 update front the multi tool. I tried removing get and process stopped

Well I really feel like there is something you're not telling us that you've done in the past to the phone. Please try to give detailed answers.
#1 - Are you 100% sure it is a Telus phone and not a Wind Mobile XT1097?
#2 - When flashing the Telus 5.0.1 image what does the phone say when the process fails?
#3 - You mention flashing 4.4.4 - do you mean a full image or just some of the files like you are mixing and matching some 4.4.4 and some 5.0.1?
#1 - Are you 100% sure it is a Telus phone and not a Wind Mobile XT1097?
No, I won this poem from Motorola and it arrived to my doorsteps unlocked. It might be on Wind, sorry I didn't think of this possibility
#2 - When flashing the Telus 5.0.1 image what does the phone say when the process fails?
The process doesn't fail while fishing to L, it only failed when I tried to flash it from the broken L to KK. When my phone is on L, the wifi, signal doesn't work, and it reboots. As shown in the video

Well like I said I tried flashing the KK that you linked to me, but then it gets stuck at gpt and motoboot. So I got the two files from the L zip and KK flashes successfully. Works like a charm too. Other than that fact that it doesn't update
Extra info. I have had TWRP and CM12.1 just because it was the only way for the phone to charge

It all sounds pretty weird. I suspect the phone may actually be a Wind mobile retail edition. They come factory unlocked, the Telus version would be locked.
The link I gave was Lollipop 5.0.1 for the Telus version. Being I think you have the Wind mobile here is the link for the Wind mobile 4.4.4:
http://www.filefactory.com/file/38yhbfahth0p/RETCA_XT1097_4.4.4_KXE21.187-52_cid14_CFC.xml.zip
When you download the file and try to flash using rsdlite gpt and motoboot will fail as they cannot be downgraded. This is not a problem. Just edit the xml file to remove them and then flash the entire package with rsdlite. When done you will be on factory 4.4.4. At that point you should get prompted to update to 5.0.1.

Help installing custom rom

Hey guys,
I am trying to intall a custom rom on my blu vivo xl. My worries are that i either soft-brick the phone or boot the new rom and having no signal due to no imei, or no 4G due to band change if it's even possible. I'll leave you with some reliable data:
-arch64 procesor
-5.1 stock android : BLU_V0030UU_V07_GENERIC 25-01-2016
- 3.10.65+ kernel
- Rooted with kingoroot
- Previously had xposed, but uninstalled due to random reboots.
I was looking to install aospextended rom:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/vivo-xl/development/rom-aospextended-rom-v4-1-t3592932
I'd really appreciate if you could orient me or refer me to a post with instructions, since i didn't find one. It's been some years since i don't do this back to the legendary HTC HD2 and i'm missing it btw
Thanks!
Nacho

Unfortunately most custom ROMs in this forum were based off Gionee so likely you will get no SIM. Use your stock ROM /etc/firmware folder to replace that in ROM.

Thank you for your response.
I've already got twrp installed for 5.1
So i should just install this MM based ROM i said on the post and replace /etc/firmware folder?
Or i need to install stock MM from ota first?
Thing is, i cant OTA update, it says that the system is corrupted, i even tried from twrp but no luck
I've seen that i need stock mm to be able to install most of the custom rom's in xda
Thing is i can't install any OTA update. Should i flash 5.1 stock rom on top of the modified one i'm running?
By modified i am talking about the root and xposed, which is the cause i cant OTA

Follow my steps exactly then you can do OTA to MM.
The key is to use the 8 files backup to restore stock 5.1, not the backup only includes 4 files.

Alright, ill do that. Tried with the 4 files backup last night, didn't work as you just told.
Do you have a link to the 5.1 stock recovery i should flash with sp flash tool? I can't find it anywhere. It wont work if i still have twrp installed, right?
Thanks! i really appreciate it, and great guide btw

I installed the 11 files backup and i still can't get ota. I should install the stock recovery, right? got a link for that?
Thank you in advance!
In my case I have a fully working STOCK but ROOTED Marshmallow Blu Vivo XL with working IMEI, but as soon as I wipe and install say AEX rom, I lose both IMEI functions and also get the dreaded wifi NVRAM error (but working wifi).
I also restored the etc/firmware directory to AEX but it wont help regain IMEI functionality.
MTK Engineering mode does not work on AEX because it complains not being stock rom so it closes.
For the life of me, I can't make a connection to the PC through SP Flash Tool too.
Any pointers?
TIA!

Thanks for the reply Min1968!
Yes, I know how to recover IMEI on the stock ROM and I'm currently running stock MM rooted with working IMEI.
The problem I have is that I can't run custom ROMs even if I try the etc/firmware trick you mentioned.
What is the stock TWRP partition that has the modem and IMEI? Maybe if I flash it back through TWRP once I get AEX rom up and running?
Thanks!
