[Q] Little confused about restore - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
This may be a question answered elsewhere but I did search and couldn't find the explanation in a way that made sense to me. With that said I apologize if this is semi-common knowledge.
I was running stock rooted until the auto-update. I'm thinking about putting on cm10 or cm11 emmc as that looks like the best way to go.
I know I can restore the ROM but what about recovery? If I need to deal with B&N or just want to fall back, can I restore the recovery to stock?
If I can could somebody post the link?
I've looked through the rooting and ROM flashing threads, but got a little turned around in understanding what methods are used for which procedure.
Thanks,
-Jeff

To put stock back to internal memory, including recovery, go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and flash the plain stock zip from item 6 followed by a factory reset in CWM.

[Q] How to get stock Froyo for Nexus One

Hey guys, I just bought a Nexus One off of craigslist. The guy that I bought it from has CyanogenMod-6.0.0-N1 on it right now. Im not really experienced with flashing custom roms and rooting or any of that stuff. I put Froyo on my Captivate when I had and thats it. What I would like to do is to get my Nexus One back on stock Froyo so I can start with a clean slate. Im not sure of everything that the previous owner did to the phone and Ive been having a couple of issues with it, so I just want to start over so I know exactly what is on the phone. So what I need to know is how I can do this.
-Where can I find a stock Froyo file?
-How do I put it on my Nexus One? Do I have to erase the CyanogenMod first?
-Any other hints or good roms that you guys would suggest.
-Is there a way to back up my phone so I dont have to reinstall all of my apps?
Im sorry if there is already another thread like this. I couldnt find it. Thank you for any help.
I did exactly what you did. I used the Passimg.zip method http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...des_&_Tutorials#Unroot_.2F_Restore_your_Nexus Was easy as pie. But yeah i didn't need to do backup / restore of apps as it was a new phone. You can't use Titanium Backup without root, but the market as a few other apps that let you backup apps to SD card.
All info including the Froyo ROM files are linked from the wiki. I went with FRG33 and then updated to FRG83.
Thank you. I was reading through the wiki post and I wasn't sure if the files were updated because the original post date was a while ago. So if I do the method that you did, will it unroot my phone? It is rooted right now.

Yes it will unroot it, flash the stock rom and will also flash stock recovery. So if you have a custom recovery installed that will go away too. Plus all your data and apps.

Is there any way to do this without a functioning power button? The only way to select things in the bootloader is with it.

My bootloader is locked, and I'd like to keep it that way. I'm sending it in to HTC and want it to go as smoothly as possible.
Just as an FYI, what I did to get back to stock:
From CM6.0 I flashed clockwork recovery
from clockwork I flashed 4.06 radio (was on 5.08)
flashed stock unrooted FRF91 from an update.zip
used flash_image in ADB from recovery to flash a stock recovery.img pulled from a FRF91 PASSIMG.
Everything works and is 100% stock now.
Sounds like you're all over it then...

Wait, didn't you need to be rooted to flash back the stock recovery?

I was still rooted in clockwork. Using flash_image put it back to stock unrooted recovery.
As it stands I have stock unrooted everything including recovery.
Oh i see, thanks for the details

[Q] Will flashing stock firmware remove evidence of rooting?

Hey guys, sorry if this a dumb question but I am not sure if flashing stock firmware is good enough to remove all evidence of rooting and such since I dont know what exactly happens in the process of rooting / flashing.
I just realized I have an hardware issue but I already rooted my GN using zergrush v4 and flashed the CF-Root kernel after that (using the already-rooted.bat by CF).
Someone wrote something about simply flashing stock firmware so I
- flashed stock firmware (full firmware, not only kernel)
- rebooted twice
- used every factory reset / wipe option stock offers in recovery mode
- booted and reformatted internal sd after unmounting it
(Yes I seem to be blind or stupid because only after I did that I saw I could have simply flashed stock kernel and used unroot script...)
For a noob like me it seems like it did the trick, I am not rooted anymore, SU, CWM... are gone but I just want to be sure there aren't any traces anymore.
Thank you in advance for answers (hopefully).
You should probably flash the stock recovery as well. As soon as they boot into recovery they will know.
Edit: guess I should have read it more thoroughly, I see you don't have cwm anymore.

Thanks for the reply rogerski1, I already checked before you edited and it is stock.
There is so much to read and learn for a first time android device owner and since there are a lot of contradicting statements all over the threads (concerning wipes and such) it is hard to guess who is right or wrong and if I understood it right, so I had the urge to ask.
Thank you, gotta go to sleep.
From what I understand, a flash of a complete ROM, including the kernel, should get rid of Clockwork Recovery, because CWR is stored in the kernel.
From what I understand the kernel is like the engine. The rom is the car. Overclocked kernels will make your car run faster and better. The recovery maybe a repair shop? Flashing a rom and kernel will still leave you with a custom recovery. Its there in case **** goes wrong. Fwiw, I am not a developer or programmer at all, just an android enthusiast.

Can't find a cm7 tutorial

So, I've been searching this forum for an hour or so, trying to find a tutorial for installing cm7. I can't find a single thread about it.
I already downloaded a stable cm7 zip file to flash. However, I have no idea how to go through with this. I just rooted my OG Droid a few minutes ago. My only other experience with flashing zips and installing ROM is with my Nook Color.
I don't know if my experience with my Nook can carry over to my Droid. I don't even understand which partition or storage system to flash this ROM to.
I tried a search before this. It doesn't help that this phone doesn't have any specific name besides Droid or Milestone (mine isn't even a milestone; it's from Verizon).
Some help or links would be appreciated. I'm sorry about posting an entire thread about this.

I would recommend taking a look at this guide from the official cyanogenmod wiki on how to install the latest version of CM 7 http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/index.php?title=Install_CM_for_sholes. As far as where you are installing the ROM to you are installing it to the Droid's internal mtd based storage, whereas on the Nook Color you would be installing it to the external SD card.

Thanks for putting in the time to comment. I'm currently running cm 7 on my droid. The process was apparently much more simplified than installing a rom on the nook. After finding the directions for installing cm10 and successfully following them, I figured I could do the same thing with cm7. It worked fine without any problems. The whole process was much easier without having to worry about boot partitions and external storage, that was mainly what I was worried about.
I guess this topic can be locked or deleted to the mod's content.

help getting nook hd back to stock

stupid me didn't backup and i upgraded to the hd+ and want to return the hd to office max. i read leapinlar thread and for the life of me i cant find the zip download or directions on how to return to stock on hd. i have cm 10.1 installed with custom recovery. sorry guys lots of info on the pages and i must be missing it or i am confused lol. i tried to change the npk to zip and do it but i get a bad error. forget it. found them. hope it works
Make a backup of what you have for use if flashing plain stock fails. There are links to plain stock files in item 6 of leapinlar's Android Development thread about Stock and Extras on the first message. Be warned, I had trouble with it before I restored a stock backup I'd made prior to installing cm 10.1. Once stock is onboard you can use the advanced menu to reformat the internal data and data/media (sdcard). You can also reregister and do a deregister once stock is onboard. BTW, OfficeMax here stipulates a 15% fee on returns.

[Q] Nook HD+ Boot Issues

Hi Everybody,
I tried to look for situations similar to my own but couldn't seem to find any. I followed this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2602796 to root my new 32 gig Nook HD + and everything was going fine up to step 9. When I tried to install the cm 11 zip, I was getting a status 7 error, and as an idiot I forgot to backup my Nook. So I completely understand that it is my fault, but I was wondering i there is any way to go back to stock rom, because all my Nook does is boot up to the CWM. Thank you guys for the help!
Flash correct CWM. CM 11 needs different recovery. Check verygreen's thread

I downloaded the version from the thread then installed it from the CWM menu. Is the version still 6.0.4.6? Because even after I install it I keep getting the status 7 error when I try to install cm11.

Two places to point you:
1. To install CM 11, you should make sure you are using the CWM version from this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2600572
2. To return to stock, you can find info and the stock images on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2062613
Page down to item 6 in the original post on this thread, which will provide you with the links to various versions of stock.
Good luck.

See I've tried using the CWM from the first link, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I know this will make me sound like a noob, but when the instructions say that I need to "flash" the recovery image (and so on and so forth) it just means to install them through the ClockWork Mod menu correct? Because even after I flash the cwm recovery image, it doesn't make a difference. I still keep getting a status 7 error when I try to install CM 11. I'm also worried that because I put the cwm internally on my Nook (at least I assume I did from what I got from following the guide) I wont be able to change it.
Sorry I keep bugging you guys, I understand if I screwed myself over, but I'm still trying to figure out what I can do to fix my HD+ if possible.
A few more thoughts

Yes, when the instructions say to "flash" they do mean install via CWM, as described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317500
in the section of the original post titled "Back up stock ROM & Install CM 10.1 or CM10.2"
Typically you get a status 7 error for one of two reasons: 1) wrong version of CWM, 2) the ROM you are trying to flash/install isn't actually for your device (or, at least that's what CWM believes). This may be a silly question, but are you sure you have the right version of CM? You downloaded from here, http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=ovation I assume, and you're using one of the CM11 nightlies? If so, there's a small chance you've got a bad / corrupt download. I'd re-download CM11 and try again.
If that doesn't work, I would go to leapinlar's thread (the second one I mentioned in my prior post), scroll down to item 6, and follow that process to revert to stock (including stock recovery). At that point, you will be back to where you started -- stock ROM and stock recovery. Once you are back to stock, you can have another go at it. Since the CM11 install seems to be giving you trouble, you might try 10.1, following verygreen's instructions http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2263553 there is also a link in that thread to a simplified list of instructions. FWIW, I'm on 10.1.3 stable and haven't found a compelling reason to move (although I probably will at some point). Another option would be try 10.2 following verygreen's instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2389813
