Headphones not working - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone else has/had this problem with Z1? Model C6903
My headphones aren't being recognized (I tried several including official sony headphones - i did not try bluetooth headphones) - when I connect them, the headphones icon does not appear in the notification tray.
This problem started after i got my phone from the repair shop (display had to be replaced). Before sending it to repair shop I did a factory reset of the phone.
Guys from the repair shop said they tested the headphone jack by connecting it with speakers and they said sound would play normally over external speakers.
What could be the cause of this (besides faulty repair)? When I get home today I will test the phone with bluetooth headphones, if it doesnt work with them it surely is a software problem..
I am running official 4.3 ROM with stock kernel, unrooted device..
I've even disabled smart connect app but problem is still present

Take a Q-tip cotton ball and put a bit of it in the jack then take the plastic stick of the cotton ball and place it over the tiny cotton in the headphone jack and twist, roll it (clean the headphone jack) using the plastic stick

will try that, but i did not wet the phone..
edit
didnt help

Sometimes happens to me as well... I try with two different pair of headphones for the moment: one works all the times (Monster), the other (WESC) less than 50% of the times.
I'm sure it's some kind of hardware-detection problem.
As you, I didn't get my phone underwater (yet!, but some day I will for sure!)...
strange issue....

Someone on here reported the ring around the opening on their device had moved and was sat proud of the rest of the body, I can't help wonder is this what's happened to yours? Even half.a millimetre would be enough to dislodge the contacts inside the headphone socket.

Never had this issue and my phone was underwater quite a few times.

i've sent my phone back to the repair shop and will see if they fix this issue.

(HELP) xperia stuck in headset mode

its been a few months now and still no parts for my xperia so i cant get it fixed.
i have been wondering if its possible for someone to make a cab to turn off/on hardware headset jack or forcibly use handset speaker when in a call orsomething?
BTW i have tried all possible fixes using the "search feature"
Are you describing the problem where even though there is nothing plugged into the 3.5mm jack, the XPERIA thinks you've got something plugged in? If so, I'm having the same issue and have found that a quick way to fix this is to take the stylus and wiggle it about at the bottom of 3.5mm jack. This clears it up.
well yeah that worked before but my jack is kinda broken but working
some of the metal in the jack is really loose and the jack has a small broken part.
I had the same issue where my headphone jack reported that there was a constant headphone plugged in, it happened after I plugged a damaged headphone port into the phone.
It took many hours of research and a very intricate and careful dissasembly to fix the issue. I meant to take photos, but my primary camera ( my X1 ) was in pieces at the time..
Anyway, there's a little connector inside the headphone jack that makes contact with a pad, closing a circut, if the connector is bent too far out of the way, it doesn't make contact, and the phone thinks there is a headset inserted.
If your connector is actually broken, you'll have to jerry-rig a wire or something between the two plates to force it to know there's nothing in, but then you lose all headphone functions.
I had to bend the strip of copper to -exactly- how it should be, and it worked out for me, my phone is back how it used to be.
I hope this is of some help to someone, if it happens to me again, I'll document it properly, unfortunately I was in a rush this time, so I didn't have time to prepare properly, I went gung-ho and ripped it to pieces to get it right again.
what about a "software" method of fixing this problem?
doesn't windows mobile support turning headset off, from the registry, for example?
while using radio you can still redirect the sound to the main speaker, (this option is available on the radio panel) something like this feature can help us, i think..
Same problem here. I have tried some suggestion over here but didn't work. You may try it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4485113#post4485113
I'm tired with annoying wire headset and now using a BT headset to be able make/receive calls.
Hope somebody can help us before we send back for repairing.
It happened to me, simply insert a clean "cotton buds" and pull it out again. I think, a dirt just got stuck causing some hardware short circuit or something. Don't know....but it definitely worked for me. I have tried those hardresets, softresets, tweaks and unfortunately none of them worked.
try to drain the battery and charge it back up.
Sometimes would be nice to combine some of the threads because they refer to the same problem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529449
Anyway from my knowledge there are two reasons for this problem.
You may guess
1. Hardware:
This issue had been described very often. Of course the jack is a delicate piece of hardware, which could be damaged physically due to some bad plug or violent force.
2. Software:
It's obvious that the connection is controlled by a piece of software.
I realized that the problem had gone with the latest update.
Maybe it would be helpful to know about the firmware version you got on your phone.
P.S.: Anyone out there who may add this issue to the wiki?

Ear Speaker problem

Got this problem from 3-4 days. During a call, the EAR speaker stops working. Though speaker works. I think it's a problem with software as ear speaker works sometimes.
I 've PureX installed.
Sent from my C6602 using xda premium
Also WiFi of Xperia Z takes longer than other phone to connect to my router. Also I get more Wi-Fi drops than any other phones in my home including Nokia X6. Any solution?
My Z is rooted

my xperia z has the same problem, but mine when i press on the ear speaker the sound is back and it is back to work.
i think the problem is in the hardware.
sorry i don't have the solution but i asked sony customer care about my problem and they said to take to sony service shop
I have exactly the same issue - very intermittent though.
Been happening since the 4.3 update (so last 3/4 days also).
I've just done a wipe of the cache partition to see if that helps. If it doesn't, it'll be a full wipe
Failing that, and I'm really hoping it won't come to this, but I'll have to see if Sony will honour the warranty based on me buying from another country.
All all the things my phone can do - I can't now make a call without being on loudspeaker (or having the headset plugged in!)
Edit: No, still having the same issue - will try a full wipe and report if I find out anything new
water inside had the same pb..
Not been anywhere near water, so not that.
Done a full wipe & restore, but still have the issue intermittently.
I'll have to see if Sony will repair it - tricky I imagine given I purchased it in a different country.
Probably hardware related...
When this problem occur I twist my phone (literally pry it) then the speaker start to work again...
Seems like there a bad connection between speaker and motherboard...

I have the same problem and its related to 4.4 stock firmware, on 4.3 or 4.4 non stock rom the earspeak work perfect
Have same problem, earspeaker stop working and I can only make a call using the loudspeaker or a headset. If I install Smart Connect it shows that a Headset is connected, but there are no headset connected. What I also noticed ist that the microfon also not working in Video recording, etc. only in a call with loudspeaker its working.
I've had the same problem - it's hardware problem... Sony service was not able to set the problem (how stupid is that!) and I've been to another service (my phone is still under warranty) and payed - they replaced the whole air speaker... There's a major number of people who have that problem
It's a model problem... My Xperia z problems: death pixels, unglued backcover, problem wirh ear speaker and problem with proximity sensor....
Unfortunately for me Sony are no longer option when I choose a new smartphone...

I have the earspeaker problem as well for a few month now. After trying different ROMs (CM, RR, Omni, stock) I figured out the speaker works occasionally when I press and twist different spots on the backside a little bit.
At the moment my phone is at a service shop. I hope they will fix that annoying problem.
Sry if i resume that post But it's important :3
Be Careful before send your Phone at customer service for earspeaker substitution, The 80% of earspeaker issues are software (look The thousand of People that's changed earspeaker and have again The same issue in few month).
The constants in almost all The users affected by that problem are: They use sony's walkman and The Phone stop working properly because Android detect AN Headset in The audio jack.
So i try To disabile sony's integrate walkman (uninstall updates and disable application) and "musica in movimento" (in english i suppose is music on trip?).
Result: i can't hear Nothing for earspeakers.
As my Last ship i try a New music player Whit call interrupt function (Aimp). Headset ok, i disconnettere th jack, The song pause, Nice, try To play It without Headset: all work fine (do that thing, It probably permanently fix The issue). Now I'm using that Phone for work and at The moment It Seems work properly (i found that workaround only 3 days ago so is not fully tested)... If someone want try i need some feedback
P.s. I Hope i explain myself quite Well, I'm not english and Write long messages With italian spellcheck is a bloodbath :|

Headphone Jack issues

Hi There everyone,
Well i just got my XPERIA Z1 yesterday and i had spilt water on it. All the flaps were closed and i had dried it all off. Afterwards (1 and a half hours later) i decided to listen to some music but the problem was that as soon as i inserted my headphones into the jack it would not play any sound from the headphone itself, it would only play the sound from the phone's speakers. The headphones were working perfectly normal in the morning when i was using the phone before i spilt the water. I assumed that the headphone jack had not fully dried so i left it for about 3-4 hours and now as soon as i plugged in my headphones the same problem came. I tried the original sony headphones that came in the box and there is a strange static/buzzy coming from the headphone and yet the sound would slightly play from the phones speakers. I do not know what to do and this is not exactly what i expected from a waterproof phone.
THINGS THAT HAVE BEEN DONE: I have updated my phones software to the latest, i have tried switching it off and on again and tried using both sony headphones including the original one.
If anybody comes up with a solution to this i would be extremely grateful.

get a q-tip or earbud and clean and make sure the inside of the headphone jack is completly clean and dry.
I highly doubt it would have not dried after so many hours, i live in a hot country and i just came from outside and i tried again, and yet i am still facing problems.
can anybody please help? Am i the only one who is experiencing this???
this has been discussed many times, it seems to be a software fault possibly due to smart connect, unless you indeed have a defective unit. try turning on and off smart connect and the profiles associated with your headphones, that did it for me.
hi i put some water on my z1 and the headphone jack is no longer working as the headphones are not getting detected, any sound comes through the speakers and not the heaphones. can anybody hep?

Sounds like a defective unit (i.e. water seeps into the headphone jack).

Firstly, ensure that the Event(s) are turned on in Smart Connect.
Secondly, it could possibly be because of your defective jack that the phone is unable to detect your headphone being plugged in, and that's why the Event is not triggered.

I have hardware problem (i think). Tried changing firmware, cleaning jack etc...still not working. So the question is: if the water really damaged jack, can replacing it fix the problem?

[Q] Problem with headphones

Hi guys,
I am having a problem with the aux jack of my phone...
At the beginning it started as a little problem where sometimes the music stopped by itself (even despite the headphones were inserted properly) and I had to start the music again.
But now the headphones only work for literally one second and its basically impossible to listen the music with the headphones.
I looked inside to see if there were any cotton balls (from the pocket of the jeans) or anything inside but nothing...
I also used a 'Electrical Contact Cleaner Switch Clean Aerosol Spray Can Dirt Remover' but it did not work (I attached an image of the product I used)
I also rolled the sellotape around a thin plastic stick, that could enter inside the jack, and inserted the stick inside the jack to try clean something but it did not work neither...
What do you suggest me guys? Shall I go to a repair shop and ask them to open my phone, clean the jack from inside, and then close my phone again or what?
PS: i also used different headphones, but I still have the problem...
pps: I tried to apply some pressure on the headphones from different sides, but still not working

I have the exact same problem and I've come across several other posts with similar issues (e.g. see the "Common issues..." thread here on XDA). This is a Z3 defect and it seems you have to hand it in for repair.

It could be a software or hardware problem. Very rarely music fails to play on mine but it is fixed when I restart my phone. However, after heavy use the headphone jack does wear down quite easily.
Try replugging the headphone or resetting the phone and playing music again, or blowing into the headphone jack with an air blower. Cotton swab can help clean the inside but may also introduce more dust. Also try cleaning the plug and then spinning the headphone plug around; if is damaged you may need to have it at a certain angle and pull it out slightly.
The headphone jack is probably my biggest problem this phone it's broken on me twice. After constant use, the headphone jack gets a bit too deep and buzzes on the left side when a plug is inserted all the way in. When I went to Taiwan last summer I had it repaired (took them about a week) and it worked fine for a few months but then the same problem came back. Well, it got worse because I accidentally dropped the phone with headphones plugged in - the second time on soft carpet and it still caused this problem. Hope to have it repaired the next time I go to Taiwan.
