att $35 plan - Moto X Q&A

I have a verizon moto x and I purchased the $35 att prepaid plan. No matter what APN I try I can't get data to work. Can anyone help me out with this?

Thought I remember reading somewhere that Verizon Moto X was SIM unlocked for international use only. Sounds like the kind of thing Verizon would do.

Not to sound like a douche, but this has been discussed many many times, and the answer is: Older Verizon handsets were "international" meaning they had international bands but wouldn't work on US networks. That's since changed, as now all Verizon phones that have GSM capabilities are unlocked for US networks and international GSM too.
The issue the OP is having is not based on the network working at all, it's that his data specifically won't connect. OP, I'd double check all the possible APN's you could find online and see if changing them would work. Remember, H+ is all you'll get on a VZW Moto X that's on ATT's network.

I'm happy with hspa+ but I can't get the APN settings to save.

It could ultimately be an issue with the way VZW "modified" the firmware. When on VZW's network, APN's aren't editable at all. I'm assuming you're able to edit them as you're saying that the APN's won't save, but sounds like it's giving you the option to edit them.
Try these various APN's
Code:
APN: phone
mmsc: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
mms proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MCC:310
MNC:410
APN type: default,supl,mms,hipri

Thank for the clarification. My mistake. (BTW - this is an example of how a person can be civil and gracious in an online forum.)

I've tried these but it won't save

I haven't cancelled my verizon line yet. Would that affect anything. Do I have to do a factory reset before using another carriers Sim?

EDIT:
May try using something like an app to modify the APNs, such as this > https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tweakker
That's honestly the only thing I know, if the phone won't let you add them from the system settings.
You shouldn't have to FR the phone just to use another SIM. If that were the case, then using the phone globally wouldn't work right as the APN's wouldn't sync up. I don't think that having the line active on VZW would hurt it either because ultimately, the device needs the SIM to even register on a CDMA network, let alone LTE.
There's bound to be a way to save the APN's properly. If it's allowing you to add them, then there should be a way to save them. Does it give you the 3-dot menu button? Or a button at the bottom to save or anything?

Yes there's the 3 dots then save. When I click save it goes to the main APN screen and there is no APN profiles there.

Just to confirm, you're typing a name for the APN right? Make sure that under mobile networks, the network type is set as LTE/GSM (or Global, I forget the option), and that roaming is allowed, and then try the APN. I wish I had my ST SIM active so I could test this with you.

Yes I am typing a name for the APN. I'm on the $35 feature go plan. Its possible it may not work on the moto x but it should still let me create a APN right?

SOLVED: AT&T terrible speedtest results (fixed mine)

I've seen some AT&T customers complain about terrible speeds and latency when doing speed tests. I too had this issue. Before the fix, I was getting about 20 kbps downstream and 400+ latency. After, I'm getting 6+ mbps and 80-120 latency. I fixed mine by adding a new APN with these settings. To change them, go to SETTINGS -> MORE... -> MOBILE NETWORKS -> ACCESS POINT NAMES. From here, either select the existing one or click the menu key to create a new one. Also, if you create a new one, make sure to select it after you're done making it. (you have to tap the radio to select it because tapping the name will edit it but NOT select it).
The blank ones are blank/unspecified. You probably only need to change APN and APN type (the other shown values were already like this on mine). For APN type, those are commas separating the terms. I posted a link to 3 shared screenshots so you can see what it should look like.

Do you get H+ insted H?? if u dont mind can you check in Settings, about phone and Status. in mobile network type HSPA:10 or HSPA+:15????
Didn't work for me (data gets disabled), however the only APN settings that have worked so far are the stock ones with wap.cingular.com. I have tried numerous other ones to no avail..

Thanks..I honestly didn't think there was a difference between the LTE and non-LTE plans at AT&T. But my dad is in charge of the plan, so maybe I am missing something.
I'm using the same Stock AT&T PTA apn I've used since the Infuse 4g and it works perfect. Stock APN I couldn't even get 20kbps most of the time. Now I can at least get 5.7 (about what I'm used to in my area).

I'm using the pta APN since I came from an LTE phone so my sim is provisioned for it. I usually got about 8-9mbps down in this location when on my sgs3 so if these speeds stick and improve I'm quite happy. Obviously uploads are the biggest hit but not too worried about that

It wouldn't work for me with the default WAP.Cingular APN. As soon as I changed it to the hspa+ one, speed test worked.
For this of you on the pta APN, does your MMS work? If so, do you still have the WAP.Cingular APN in the list (just not checked)? Or is the pta APN the only one listed?
I too have my Sim provisioned for lte, but if I use the pta APN, I get great data speeds, but no MMS. Thanks.

Many thanks for posting this! My internet donwload speeds went from .001 MBPS download to 2.97MBPS. I hate to say this, but it still felt snappy even at .001 MBPS. My Galaxy S2 was so slow to process websites.
solved minus mms......
I get faster speeds with the new APN, but I can't get H+ in areas where is was able to get it with my S3. Anyone have a solution?
thanks for this!
Posted this on another similar thread. Worked for me. It's the Cingular.WAP APN but slightly different.
"Anybody still having issues with att H+ speeds try the APN settings from this link
http://nerdynerdnerdz.com/blog/2011/07/23/att-apn-mms-settings-android/
My speed increased by 600% when I switched to this, from barely 1Mbps to 6+Mbps. I also can run the speed test app now whereas before I could not."

Yes, add this to the OP and everything will work.

[Q] Unlocked Samsung Captivate won't download MMS, even with the carrier correct APN,

Hello,
I have a Samsung i896 Captivate, which was originally with Rogers. I purchased it from a cell store second hand and unlocked. I am with Virgin Mobile. I have spoken to them about my issue that the MMS will not download. They say they're down loading but then never finish and eventually expire. Even as I added the APN according to the instructions from VIrgin, nothing has changed. Still not down loading MMS. They say that because the phone was not originally with Virgin they can't do anything about it. Is there anything I can do to get my MMS downloading even with my unlocked phone??? Please help and thank you for reading.

When you entered your APN, did you delete all the others first?
Being unlocked doesn't change much other than you can use it on any carrier. Did you check with them to see if they locked your MMS?
Also, MMS can only be downloaded on data (can't use wifi).

Thank you for your reply BWolf56! So I haven't checked with Rogers to see if they lock their MMS as they are not my carrier. (they were the original phone owners carrier) If I call them do you think they'll assist me even if I am not thier client?
When I entered the APN there were no previous APN entered so none to delete.
I turned off the Wifi and then turned my phone on and off, just to see if that made a difference...I don't even know what to expect will happen if I do find a fix. Will my pending (NOT expired) MMS be able to be down loaded?
Would you have any other suggestions as to how to fix this problem? I really want to receive these messages before they expire and am getting kind of desperate. Thanks again.

Locked MMS would come from your current carrier so you would have to ask them.
Although, if you were on Wifi this entire time, it's normal it didn't work. As I mentioned earlier, you need to be on your data (3G/H) to download MMS. You should be able to redownload the pending ones, just hold over the MMS and hit redownload.

Out of curiosity, did you set two APN's? By the looks of it, there are two for Virgin - one for default and one for mms. I had the worst time doing a Rogers apn setup and eventually had to go to the default one and put default,text,mms,...etc for the type. Virgin might work the same. If you already have figured your problem out, then sorry for a late reply.

There should be 2 APNs indeed: Rogers' look like this:
Main APN:
Name: Roger #1
APN: internet.com
MCC: 302
MNC: 720
APN type: default,supl,mms
APN protocol: IPv4
Bearer: Unspecified
Leave everything else as is.
MMS APN:
Name: Rogers MMS
APN: rogers-core-appl1.apn
MMSC: http://mms.gprs.rogers.com
MMS proxy: 10.128.1.69
MMS port: 80
MCC: 302
MNC: 720
APN type: mms
APN protocol: IPv4
Bearer: Unspecified
Leave everything else as is.
There's also a LTE one and couple others but aren't needed on our phone.
So yeah, Virgin should have something similar to those. And of course, gotta be on data (3G)
Let's hope that's all it is, I couldn't help but notice that the reference was "APN" instead of "APN's". I'm just finishing work on a Captivate and happen to have a Virgin acct so I'll try it shortly and see
Oh my. I am so sorry, I didnt even get close to trying my virgin acct on the captivate I was working on. The customer was hovering to get it back, so sorry for misleading. How did you make out ElleJay? did you finally get your unit going?

i had a similar problem a few months back and sporadically since. i talked to rogers and was advised to go into apn type and edit it to say - internet, mms instead or default, supl, mms
try it and exit then go back in and make sure it stuck. for some reason it takes more than one try sometimes.
hope that helps
Remember, they bought with rogers as original, but are trying to setup virgin...but yeah, the overall consencus is that they may be missing an apn setting and "of course, gotta be on data (3g)" lol. Now just more concerned as to whether its up and running.

T-Mobile Moto X on Net10 (ATT SIM) w/ LTE?

Does anyone have a T-Mobile Moto X running on Net10 (ATT network) and getting LTE working?
If so, what APN settings are you using?
I purchased a nano ATT Net10 SIM from a reseller who cut it down to size, and it came with instructions which make me believe it might be an old SIM because the enclosed directions said to use:
Name: NET10
APN: att.mvno
Proxy: proxy.mvno.tracphone.com
Port: 80
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: 66.209.11.33
MMS Port: 80
-----------------and additional info on various websites also suggest:
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Auth Type: PAP
APN Type: default,supl,mms
If I delete the main proxy listed above and leave it blank, I can connect with 4G (HSPA+) but don't see LTE coverage areas. If I don't delete the proxy, I get nothing.
The settings for a new ATT SIM are very different, and didn't seem to work at all. Is it possible to even get LTE with the old SIM? I'm new to this SIM game. If I have to get a new SIM, can my existing 30 days be transferred to a different card?
Also, for the first couple hours it all acted very wacky. It would work, and then all of a sudden put up the icons saying the phone didn't have a SIM card at all. I'd pop out/in the card and reboot, and it would come back. Lost it this way 3 or 4 times, but it hasn't happened in a number of hours now. Would this suggest the cut-down nano SIM wasn't the best trimming job?

Is the LTE symbol lighting up? Mine came from Quality One Wireless in FL for $0.99 (http://www.net10wirelessphones.com/Net10-sim-card-byop-kit.html). Don't know if it's the same seller as you had on ebay. Did yours come with a red activation card showing the settings you used, or ones more like the ones I listed? I get LTE, and everything functions accordingly.
Don't worry about the sim card, I cut mine by hand, it takes a few bits to set up the radio and all the fit bits within. After the first day, everything is fine.

The tfdata (the APN that's also provided through the NET10 app in the Play store) APN is the correct one for getting LTE. I had the same problem, as I was unable to get data on tfdata and only getting HSPA+ on the wap.tracfone APN. I called the BYOP support line (1-855-333-CELL) and they verified I had the tfdata APN settings correct, then "updated my line." Boom, LTE.

I'll give that a try soon. Got a new nano SIM I stamped out of a micro directly from NET10 and not a reseller. Need to port my existing Verizon number out via Google Voice and sell an existing Verizon Unlimited Data plan via an AoL before picking up NET10 again. Found HSPA+ pretty good during my trial run, so it should be even better with LTE. During my test I think the old SIM I was using created the problem as nothing using tfdata worked at all.

I'm really pleased with the HSPA coverage, so much that I would've left it as is if I could've gotten MMS to work. It's nice having that fallback, especially indoors or out in the boonies.
I bought my SIM from Wal-Mart. Strange, I would've expected SIM cards from official channels would work better than the reseller ones.

Unable to receive MMS - ST tMobile

Hi,
I have tried just about every APN I can get my hands on and have talked to ST via chat and they give me APN's to try, yet I am unable to "RECEIVE" MMS connected to WiFi or Network. Something I have noticed, when I am attempting to download a MMS that was sent, I never see the network icon show up. Isn't that suppose to show up during the initial process? Any who, I will list the current and ONLY APN I have / use atm. Thanks!
NOTE: If it's not listed it is "NOT SET"
APN: wap.tracfone
Port: 8080
MMSC: http://mms.tracfone.com
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
APN Type: default, mms, supl (Should this have spaces?)
APN Enable/Disable: IS checked
SlimMan, are you using T-Mobile or another third party carrier that uses T-Mobile's network? If T-Mobile, my Sim automatically enters:
APN: epc.t-mobile.com
MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
this works very well for me, 4G LTE, etc.

Thanks for the reply.
I am using T-Mobile via Straight Talk. The link you shared, I am not able to get it to load via Chrome or IE?
Thanks again.

But Straight Talk piggy backs on AT&T.
Sorry for the confusion, if using over straight talk it will be different. So far wap.tracfone should work, have you called Straight talk support?

Project Fi model on AT&T LTE

I have the Project Fi Android One version of the Moto X4 and AT&T service, and I was wondering if anyone else uses this model on AT&T and has gotten LTE to work? I've been in touch with AT&T support, gave them the IMEI, gone through the APN settings, etc. but could never get LTE to work. I do have HSPA(+?) working, but would really like LTE. The sim card I'm using is the same one that I previously had in my old Nexus 5 and it was able to use LTE. If anyone did get it to work, could you let me know the steps you took? Thanks.
Mine worked out of the box on Cricket (AT&T) with no problems. Do you know what bands AT&T uses in your area for LTE?
Any joy on this?

I've not got a solution as I've not hooked-up on Fi yet.
HOwever, I'd like to know that, if the Fi network doesn't do what I need it to, I can go back to ATT (The Devil I Know)
So, I'd like to know if you've had any luck resolving this.
Scott Sands
I used FreedomPop's GSM SIM which uses AT&T and had no issues. Initially it may come up as H+, but it will settle into LTE usually within a few hours.

APN type: default,mms,supl,hipri,fota

APN roaming protocol: IPv4/IPv6

I used my Fi x4 on Cricket (AT&T MVNO) for a couple of weeks to use up my prepaid time before I activated on Fi and LTE worked fine for me also. I think it's probably something on AT&T's side, keep calling them or go into a store and bug them until they straighten it out. There's no technical reason why it wouldn't work.
