What are these screens supposed to look like? Mine seems OK except the touchscreen goes unresponsive at times. Also, colors are pretty dull and this thing has greys and gamma like a much inferior screen. Didn't reviews say the screen had great blacks, etc? I font have the ghost white hue glitch but it just seems generally washed out to me. Can others chime in?
Also, I know its a great deal so please don't flame, I want to just find out if others have a better experience or that mine is on the more defective end.

Everything you just said is highly subjective. I love my screen. I think it's great. You may look at it and say its washed out and generally inferior. If you can't post pictures, there's nothing anyone here can do to help you sir. Some people undoubtedly are coming from ultra-high-end screens and will find this one lacking. Most, I think, do not.
My camera doesn't pick it up well but the Black's are not all that dark. I just thought the colors would be a little more saturated. This screen really doesn't look much better than a nook tablet. Its got higher resolution but the color and gamma and blacks are about the same. I guess I will find out once the replacement comes due to the touch issues.

I've owned many different devices and my n7 is a bit washed out but not bad given the price. Hoping nice more dev builds up we can start playing around with fine tuning the screen

The screen is easily the Nexus 7's weakest link, but considering the price... it's awesome. It took a little bit to get used to coming from the iPad 3 and its absolutely glorious screen, but I couldn't be happier with my N7.
Glad I'm not the only one that noticed the screen. My biggest problem though is the occasional unresponsiveness of the touchscreen. I'll check on the differences when I get a replacement sent to me. Thanks all for the replies

I only notice the screen not looking great when I turn down the brightness to about 10-20%. On full brightness it looks amazing though...but I can deal with a little less than vibrant colors on my day-to-day use in order to extend the battery life.
Just glad we have 1280 vs the 1024 the Galaxy Tab 2 7 is using which is just a no go.

Have you played the Transformers movie at 30% to 50% brightness because I was blown away by the display when I did that?
The washed out screen was too much for me. I own the galaxy nexus and going from a super AMOLED screen to IPS was very jarring. The light bleeding on the Nexus 7 was pretty bad too, and when you touch the screen you get the 'air pocket' effect. The panel is definitely the worst thing about the device. I got the Samsung galaxy tab 7.7 instead and put CM9 on it, so much happier that I get deep deep blacks and can use it in landscape mode as well. Overall it is a much better tablet, I actually prefer watching movies on it than my 46inch Bravia TV  Its a very surreal experience, you have to see it to truly understand how amazing it looks

I personally love mine. The screen doesn't blow me away but it isn't bad at all. I would appreciate the screen more if I didn't own a One X

Same for me, if I didn't own a HTC One X, this would be the best screen I've owned on an android device.
But the fact I have a Motorola Xoom too, my Nexus 7 screen is much better!

N7 screen is in fact a bit dull and washed out, especially on lower brightness (the fact that automatic backlight is calibrated as pretty dim does not help either).
The colours are much, much less vibrant as on my One X (but this phone has really got a top-end gorgeous screen).
However, screen on N7 is noticeably better than on Motorola Xoom in terms of color reproduction and viewing angles.

Ok, I'll agree here on auto brightness.
It was also too dull & washed out for me.
However, 50% fixed brightness is actually very bright and makes the colours great in my opinion.

Are colors better on tab 2 7.0?
Nexus 7 has no green
Two things I've noticed about my screen so far, that makes me wonder if we're dealing with defective screens rather than just plain poor quality ones.
First, load an app or picture onto the device that just displays pure 0,0,255 green (if you search for 'dead pixel' I think the first or second app has options to display a solid colour). I find my Nexus is completely unable to display the green properly, instead showing an extremely washed out pastel shade. I've tested this with red and blue and neither of those suffer anything like the same issue as green does. This might be what is contributing to the weird washed out/off-colour look.
Second, this is purely anecdotal, but it seems like the brightness setting of the Nexus is purely software after around the halfway mark. You can easily see the backlight ramping up from 0-50% but beyond that just seems to be a gamma change, which doesn't brighten the screen at all and instead just washes it out further.
If anyone could follow up on these and post their own tests we might be able to get a better idea of where the real issues with this tablet lie. Or whether mine is just a little bit more broken than everyone else's.

I didn't have a bad device, I had a problem with the IPS technology used in the Nexus 7. If you compare a Super AMOLED plus screen to IPS it looks washed out, and the blacks are pretty poor...Also, you will always get a little bit of light bleeding because of the technology.

That's normal.
Hi,
As unappealing as it is, our Nexus 4 has an IPS screen instead of an AMOLED screen, which in turn uses a lot more battery (black lights up to show you black, instead of turning off the pixel like on AMOLED), and doesn't give you the options needed to control your screen to display the right color.
Comparing to a stock HTC One S, which has AMOLED, red is dark red, green is too dull, gray has a lot more black, and black is dark blue. There is just no possible way to get out of this.
Even when I turned Green and Blue to 0, and set Red to 255, not to mention going to gamma and setting those to the proper options, so that the screen only shows red, it still shows dark red instead of the real red that the AMOLED screen produces.
So stop complaining, and either buy an AMOLED phone (any samsung) or try and replace the phone's screen with an AMOLED one.
If you want to test the values in the SPREADSHEET thread, be my guest, but I've literally tried every single value in there and red just doesn't feel red, and green is always dull. We just have to live with it.
can you really buy an amoled screen for your nexus ??

lol no, but if you discovered a method please do tell us, i wouldn't mind doing it
*shrug* I personally feel the IPS display on the Nexus 4 does a much better job at displaying more true to life colors than any Amoled phone I've used before. But to each their own.

Nothing like starting a new thread about something you do not want others to post about. Makes so much sense.
You are also probably the person who copies all in an email to say do not copy all. Of course after 40 other people did the same thing.
my previous phone was a GS3, the oversaturated colors of AMOLED panels might look nice in some cases, but the colors are not realistic, whites are never whites, they are grey, a lot of tinting and smearing problems, a very big chance of burn-in and ghosting problems even if you take care of your devices (happened to my galaxy nexus even though i used minimal brightness levels and 15sec screen-off, my burn in was under the notification and Navbar area). So IMO, and based on my own experience with AMOLED displays, i'd take an IPS LCD panel everytime.
Concerning our nexus 4 in particular, i've found that it depends from one device to another, my nexus 4 has absolutely an amazing display, beautiful colors, i'd say it's comparable to displays on HTC phones. Everytime i'd see a thread complaining about the display, washed out colors etc.. , i'd think it's just another troll. Then i saw my friend's phone, and damn those colors were really dull.
Another thing is , another friend and i have issues with delayed notifications over wifi, the friend with dull-colors-phone doesn't have it.
Conclusion: not all problems are present on all devices, it's very unfair to generalize. Maybe your display is on the "bad side" , or maybe your are used to AMOLED displays and actually like them more. It's a matter of personal taste.
An untuned ips screen just makes the device feel low end and cheap. Much like a cheap acer tablet, an untuned screen of a nexus 10 looks like crap. With an amoled screen it feels vivid and pleasing to the eye, sunsets in movies feel warmer and scenes look much more dramatic. Its not about how close something looks like in real life, its about immersing yourself in a more vivid experience. Amoled and ips screen with color enhancement all day.
Thread title: stop complaining!
OP: complaining
Lesson: WAT?
Anyway I'm tired of glorifying cartoonish pentile amoled displays. Sureal colors, yellow-grayish whites, almost no visibility under sunlight... I do a little photo editing, and comparing amoled and ips it's almost impossible. LCD provides better viewing angles, brightness (whites on the n4 are superb), and true colors (on amoled photos look like they've been applied thousand filters, over saturated).
N4, Cataclysm+Franco
first of all, i only made this thread to stop this chaos and to stop those annoying people who complain about it.
Also, I'm not complaining about anything, i love my screen, i think it's a definite improvement from the desire z that i used to own. But again this thread is meant to stop other users from making threads like this, and just live with it.
so the lesson isn't "WAT", and OP isn't "complaining"... the lesson is the title.
thank you.

The screen in Nexus 4 is less colorful than the other LG IPS screen phone, which are all produced from LG.
IMO our screen is indeed "worse" than the one LG uses in their flagship phones.

i just read your post again.. sounds to me like youre complaining about people posting about screen color.
now, not everyone wants to adjust their sceeen color to look like an samoled. some people just want to adjust the tone/gamma, to be more pleasing to their eyes. some do want to make it look like an amoled(which we know isnt possible). even though its impossible to make our screens to look like samoleds, it is possible to adjust them so colors will appear more vivid, have more "pop". of course its not going to be the same as an samoled, but it will appear closer. why does it bother you so much that these people want to do that? as you know, what you might feel as appealing might not be appealing to others, or vice versa. and yes, all our n4 screens variate as well. some of the variations ive seen id change the screen colors/gamma to anything besides what it came with default. personally, im happy with mine screen color

It's not that the display is not becoming white it's that the whites and other colours are so off. When I use the device I have no qualms but when I put it beside my tablet I realize how bad the colours on the display are. The N7 2013 has amazing calibration. I wish Sony adds changes calibration app of this to be like the Z's. Hue and Saturation controls are there.

I have no problems with the Yellow hue, changed recently my phone with warranty (and I was damn right, it works a LOT better than my other one).
At first the screen of my actual unit was a lot more yellow than the one of the phone I was sending back, so I was really worried. But with just a Factory reset the screen went back to what it was like on my previous Z1. Plus I went to settings and found the White Balance Settings.
Now the Yellow is gone at 98% (I have a very good eyesight) and colours are gorgeous. It blows the Retina of an iPhone 5, it is a real pleasure to watch movies on the screen. Only thing I regret is that with max brightness and low ambiant light, blacks levels looks a bit grayish. Maybe that is why AMOLED users are fan of this kind of screen, I haven't tried to see if AMOLED has the same problem.
Otherwise I don't have any problems.
My settings are 23 red 16 green 78 blue.
So just noticed the screen STILL has grain to it. If you look close it looks hazy and grainy like film grain. You can see it on whites easily and in lower brightness.
I wonder if Samsung can ever fix this.
Also the screen has lines on it on low brightness on grey and white areas. Also very annoying.
Anyone else notice this?

Yes. I noticed this all the way back to the S2. I was actually wishing they would go with an IPS screen for the S5.
Yeah this is annoying me to no end. The note 3 had it worse since it was bigger and had only 1080p still. Honestly I love the screen colors and such but my eyes are really sensitive to all this and I am a photographer and work with calibrated devices all day :/ I'd what to do. Dude, no, just no.
I have a galaxy S2 which I believed to have bright and vibrant whites. I was at church with my buddy and we were comparing the white of the S2 and G3 with a church bulletin (Completely white plain paper color) and my S2 was horribly blue. His white was yellow by comparison to my phone, but 100% accurate to the real white of plain paper.
Phones jack up the cool blues to give the impression of a better "white" but that doesn't make it true and accurate to real life.
We already have a thread about the G3 screen here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2782251
