Hey everyone,
Purchased Moto X yesterday. Tried rooting it today with no luck after trying many different methods/watching videos. Each time I tried to install a Moto root app it was unsuccessful. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks!

What version is it running? Mine had 4.2 on it when I got it a few weeks ago and I used the "SlapMyMoto" method which worked very well.

EDIT: If you have read any of the guides for rooting the Moto X, it IS pretty explanatory in terms of saying you must be on 4.2.2, and if you're on 4.4, you must downgrade. Carry on with the following...
I mean, let's all be civil about the whole situation. Long story short, OP, if you're on 4.4, you have to downgrade to 4.2.2 camera update (not the original 4.2.2, but the camera update version of 4.2.2) and then do the rooting, and then upgrade back to 4.4. I'm assuming because you're not able to get root apps to run or get the process to work, you must be on 4.4. If you're on 4.2.2, post what issue you're having in the respected forum for it. Or try searching that particular error via google or the site, and see what comes up. Chances are, others have had the same issue as you and have found out what works and what doesn't.
lets make this real simple for everyone here no more flaming and here is a guide for rooting 4.4 and it also links to all the other guides

I just flash my Note3 to install Stock 4.4.2 update. Do whatever and the system update manually, OTA and pushed by AT&T fails at 27% updating the phone. Anyone is experiencing the same issue?
Going back to root probably tonight and forget about AT&T KitKat. lol

Once again. If someone finds a 28% update failure like myself (like clockwork) on my kit kat update please. Please please let me know. I have my reasons. And yes I know there are fixes. However I'm more interested on 28 from the most seen 27% fail ..I have my reasons. And I thank you all...peace.

It seems your phone was previously rooted. It happens to me as well. I am still waiting for solution from the developer.
So if your phone was previously rooted, but no longer rooted... you can't get the update? Even if I wanted to stay un-rooted, the only way to update to kitkat is by re-rooting and the upgrading?
Oh look... Another thread amongst 6 billion with the same issue...
This has been fixed and gone over many many MANY times... Please go look in the general section.

This post would be far more helpful with some actual links to maybe one or two of the useful threads out of the 6 billion. I searched the general section and have not found any simple fix to take the OTA update from a rooted NB4. However, I did find some other threads on the topic so hopefully these will help others. If I find a better fix I'll post it here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2696795 - another thread on the topic with a few ideas including getting the phone flashed and then taking the OTA update:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701062 - this seems to be the only do-it-yourself fix for the issue that I've seen, but it requires downgrading to MJ5

It would be far more helpful to everyone if the OP actually searched. That's why I say where to look and do not provide links anymore. We are not here to spoonfeed people.

Except that after I read your post, I was under the impression that there was a simple fix to get the OTA update to complete. There isn't, at least not that I could find. I searched for quite some time trying to find the "fix" you were referring to and out of the six billion posts I only came up with those two links. Also the link in the 2nd post of this thread was useful. However, as far as I can tell, there are workarounds to get the kitkat upgrade, but there is no way to get the OTA update to complete on its own. If I'm wrong, please correct me.
Incidentally, this thread was the first thread I came across in my search for a solution. If I landed here first, others will do the same. That's why I think it's helpful to others if you post a link to the appropriate information. It's not just for the sake of the OP, but for everyone who lands here. However, if you feel like it's better for the community to teach the OP a lesson and force them to search, that's really your call. We'll just agree to disagree.
Please dont flame me for this. Yes i have searched and no i havent found a solid answer.
I recently got my moto x from AT&T and they updated it in store. ive tried most of the other rooting methods with no success. I have Linux (64 bit if it matters) working adb, and working drivers.
What are my options here? i believe i read that i cant down grade to 4.2.2 to successfully root
If someone could point me in the right direction and not flame me that would be awesome. Thanks for any help you can provide, this will be the first phone ive ever had without root if i cant get it working
Only if your bootloader is unlocked. That's it... If not then you just sit back and enjoy the phone

No root on 442!
Join the outcasts. I have a page of useful links in my signature, but no root. Maybe in late summer.
Thanks for the quick responses. This is disappointing, I saw really looking to de bloat and play with utter and touchless control. It doesn't work like I expected it to.... Looks like I'll be trading it in for a g2.

No. But I shall.
Thanks for posing the question because I was wondering the same thing. I just pulled my 1058 out and started using it again; guess I'll stick with rooted 4.4... doesn't look like i'd be gaining much anyway.
I know this is not the Q&A thread. Don't shoot me. But i figured this was a dev question. Does anybody think or have tried flashing the stock droid ultra ROM to the moto x since they are VERY SIMILAR phones? Is it possible? Can it be done? Has anybody tried? If not and I was to try it do you think I can flash stock moto x IMG files back to normal? Or will i fubar my bootloader. Running Moto x Dev edit Verizon. These are questions that have been running through my head. Just thought I might ask. And is anybody willing to help me look into it? Thank you for taking the time to read and reply.

Very similar is never close enough. Any ROM for a different phone will not work for a different device. Some exploit methods work on multiple devices but never Roms and kernals.

I only asked cause if cm11 pac-rom etc could do it maybe we could. Thanks for answering though. It was worth a shot. I just miss my droid ultra?
They are the same phone in almost every way and yes the builds are compatible, or at least the 4.2.2 and 4.4 builds were last year. When the leaked T-Mobile 4.4 build came out, I was running it perfect on my vzw moto x DE and at least one other person was running it on their droid ultra/maxx with no issues.
So your question for the devs was just answered by non devs. If you KNEW you were posting in the wrong thread, but wanted to make sure you got noticed please follow the rules next time. It's not like you didn't know this does not belong here.
Only try this if you have an unlocked boot loader. If you are locked then you are out of luck. Still recommend finding a build for your phone.

i posted here thinking maybe devs have already tried it and/or have a workaround for it. i'm not going to start a fight with you over the internet cause thats just petty.
Moved here as this does not belong in the Development Section, OP please read the Forum Rules on posting.
Ok I have a rooted verizon DE moto x. It just popped up to update to 4.4.4. I was wondering if anyone has just updated there's while rooted and how it went. I don't won't to let it update and soft brick my phone bc I'm not where I can do anything about it for a few days. I would think it would be ok seeing it's a DE unlocked boot loader. Any help is gr8 thanks

First, questions belong in Q&A - not General - please post to the correct forums.
Additionally, please search. You can find all the information you are requesting in any one of these threads of the same exact topic:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/4-4-2-4-4-4-vrzn-rooted-t2831132
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/vzw-ota-4-4-4-problem-t2834435
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/getting-error-updating-moto-x-dev-t2835144
Good Luck :good:
If you're on stock recovery, with no stock apps disabled by titanium, and without xposed installed (or at least disabled), it will work. I was stock rooted on my dev edition vzw with stock recovery and the ota installed no problem.
That said... Just wait until you get home. The update is very small stuff and isn't worth being phoneless for days over.
As mentioned above questions should be posted in Q&A not general and there is already threads which this question has been asked and answered. Please use them instead of creating a new thread. Thanks

Hey everyone,
First, yes I have searched for this
This thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/one-stop-shop-how-root-moto-x-confusion-t2826159 as well as everything else I find still tells me that there is currently no way to root a 4.4.4 Moto X
Doing some searching on google I found this method that claims to work and it was just published about a month ago...
http://www.igadgetsworld.com/moto-x...unning-on-android-4-4-4-step-by-step-process/
I am however a little weary about the fact that still nobody on here seems to have a solution? Is this a method that will work or is it just going to brick my phone?
Sorry I am not the most knowledgeable about this stuff but have you guys seen this?
Mine is a VZW version that I am trying to root.

Those on 444 with the old X & Ultras are waiting for jcase & others to come up with some way to get Dan Rosenberg's exploit to work. Jcase said so far root is needed.
So root alone or temporary root to unlock the boot are yet to be found.

Thanks for pointing me to that thread I will keep an eye on it. However I still don't fully understand what is this method I have linked to then?
In short this will not work? Sorry I feel a little ignorant asking these questions...

Well I have to admit my mistake. I've just realized this was supposed to be posted in the original moto x section as opposed to the moto x 2014.
Can somebody please move this for me? Sorry for any confusion this may have caused...

The method you linked is enabled by an unlocked boot! All unlocked bootloaders have easy root.
