I'm curious as to how long it should take my phone to see all the installed apps I have on my phone after a reboot. My phone sometimes take a good five minutes before they are all visible. Is this a sign of an SD card failing? Maybe it's time to spring for the $81 32gb card on amazon.
I'm running CM 6.1 RC.
If you have apps2sd setup maybe that's ok, that sounds about right. If your worried about your sd card, do a nand and save it to your computer and backup your sd card contents too

Well I sure wouldn't go to a slower card (32GB) to solve this. I'd go to a class 6.

The 16gb card I have now is a Class 2, so I wouldn't be loosing speed, aside from the fact that it could take longer to go through more storage to load my apps, but I'd still just stick with a 1gb app partition anyway. I'm trying to wait until the 32gb cards are down to around $50 anyway.

Do you mean visible in the app drawer or available as a shortcut on your launcher desktop? I find that any apps using froyo-style apps-to-sd aren't available at the point the desktop starts up so the shortcuts fail to work even though the apps are there just fine in the app drawer. If I restarted AWDlauncher/Launcherpro after rebooting all my shortcuts started working again.

Visible in the app drawer.
If I reboot the phone, it takes forever for the apps to become visible in the app drawer, so then I go to settings / applications / manage apps, and all the apps are listed. Some show their proper icon, but most show the generic SD card icon. This is the case in both the "All" tab and in the "On SD card" tab.
I only ask cause it didn't used to be this slow to load the apps. It seems like it's been since 2.2 that it's gotten slower to load them all. Maybe that's just a FROYO thing or something, idk. But I figured I should check with the XDA crew and find out their thoughts on the matter.
Well all I can say is that I'm running cm6.1 rc1 (and before that cm 6.0) and while I do get some default icons on reboot (only for apps that have been moved to SD), all I have to do it restart my launcher and everything is fine instantly.
Has anyone had any issues with apps using the internal storage instead of the sd card? Any app I download it uses my internal storage to save. How do I change this so out users my external automatically?

Yea I'm having the same phucking problem and I'm totally fed up with it. I'm about ready to return this POS because Motorola in their phucking infinite wisdom decided to partition the internal memory the way only an idiot would
Wtf? Are you freaking serious Moto? For real. I'd like to meet the idiot who's idea it was to come up with this.
Now we are all limited to a non removable 8gb SD card basically. I can piss 8gb. Where do I freaking put my music Motorola you dumb asses?
Every app I've installed and wanted to use can not have the default location for music changed. So I'm stuck with this tiny ass partition, and an empty 32gb card.
Why the hell even include an External SD card Motorola, why. Its useless

Download App2SD from the market. You can move almost all the apps to the SD card.

I noticed this too when I installed the Amazon MP3 store although If you create a file on the External SD card and manually move your files there the music app will see it and play it from there. You can alse mount the phone on your computer and manually move them or use Astro File Manager to move them on the phone. It does suck though to have to jump through those hoops. Why you can't just change the default location is ludicrous.
Obviously, you guys got your Bionic very very recently.
DO NOT TRANSFER APPS TO SDCARD. IF YOU DO, YOU WILL LOSE THE APPS AND YOU NEED TO REINSTALL THEM!
MOTO configured Bionic differently (stupid!), and forces all apps to be installed in internal memory.
However, you can still save your media files on the external sdcard.
p.s. Don't use APP2SD on Bionic.
Why is their a better app? Is their a fix

I've been using since day one and it works fine. I haven't lost any apps and haven't had to re-install any of them.

You can use the program to move apps to the media area without issue. As for moving them to the microSD, it won't let you do that, even with root. So, I'm not sure what the fuss is about?

When your phone boots up, it fails to properly recognize apps saved to the media area.
To prevent it, just keep all your apps saved to phone until an OTA arrives addressing it.
Search the forums for disappearing apps to get filled in.
OK I thought the media area was the SD card. But I still haven't had a problem with the apps disappearing.

Neither have I, and I've been using it for almost a week. FWIW, I haven't seen any of the reports of this problem mention Gingerbread or the Bionic. Not saying it can't happen, but I think app updates have fixed the problem.
UPDATED: Been losing apps left and right today. This isn't an APP2SD issue, but a Bionic issue stemming from the way those tards at MOT decided to partition the internal storage. Why do companies do stupid crap like this?
While I was playing around with my lapdock I discovered something intersting.
I was installing some apk files from my back and discovered that my lapdock had several partitions mounted which started with "com."
It didn't take me long to realize that they were the programs moved to my media area.
They apeared as Ian drives and couldn't be innounted.
I devices to test out a suspicion and restarted only to find that those apparatus disappeared.
After some more testing I realized that by moving the files on the phone between the storage and phone until it no longer loads that app as a drive, then that app won't disappear when the phone is powered off or rebooted.
I know that not everyone has a lapdock to get around the disapearing apps, but this is a temporary solution until a fix is actually released.

Motorola! Fix your crap and quit slipping!
i'm so confused about this, i had noticed when i loaded my sd card nothing was getting recognized like widget locker themes stuff like that. then i notice that everything is getting downloaded to the internal memory. i went into settings> storage and changed download location to sd card, but everything is still downloading to internal memory. i just don't understand why it isn't looking at my sd card automatically like all of my other phones did, droid x, t-bolt, og. it's driving me effing crazy though. can someone maybe explain in dummy terms what is going on?

Look at it like this...
Your phone has 16GB of internal memory.
4GB you never see. The system uses that 4GB
8GB is read as internal storage. Motorola designed that for media. That means your videos, pictures and documents.
4GB is for apps. This is where it gets complicated. These 4GB is dedicated to your apps. It was designed to be unintrusive with your main partition.
You shouldn't have to move to SD. Not needed.
Some wishets will only be recognized when the app is on your phone partition.
Does this answered your question?

Just go into "settings, applications, manage applications" and click the "media area" tab. Any apps that have a "check mark" in them are stored to what is called the "media area." If it reads "com.*" then it has already been uninstalled. Just go reinstall it. Then go in there and all the apps with the check mark... click on the app, and then click the "move to phone" button. Wait a few seconds while it transfers it.
Sadly this is annoying and also sometimes makes the market think that the apps are not installed.
Freaking Motorola. They make such good hardware, it's a pity they put such crap inside.
I usually move all the google apps to sd via TB. But i noticed that i cannot do that in Z1. Any reason why? Also i dont see the move to SD within Settings>Apps.

i was disappointed with this too, currently that option is not available for some reason with z1, its supposed to be like that. you will have to use apps like link2sd if you want to move apps

Thats sad, I wonder if this has something to do with locked boot loader?
Is it possible to make your external SD card your main storage source when installing apps and downloadng files?

Unfortunately, nope. As far as I can tell, most of that will be fixed once we can root and install the SDFix, but until then...we're SOL. The most you can do right now is use the SD card as the main storage for the camera and music that you transfer to it. For apps, you're limited only to the apps that specifically comply to the new SD restrictions and even then all you can do is move most the app data.

Yeah, definitely sucks. I'm using doubleTwist as my music/podcast app and it won't let me use the SD card as my main storage. So now I have to go through the annoying task of manually moving the downloaded podcasts to my SD card. Not really that annoying, but it's just an extra step that I shouldn't need to do
Hi All,
I have an unrooted Z3 compact running Sony flavoured Marshmallow (6.0.1). I would like to be able to move multiple apps to the SD card simultaneously. I tried AppManagerIII but unfortunately this still makes me change the storage settings for every app individually and every time the app updates it reverts back to internal storage. This just isn't good enough, does anyone know of any better solutions? I'd prefer not to root but if that's the only way I'd be willing to do it.
Thanks for the help,
Jonny

link2sd has a good interface for this and similar app data size management. Root required for batch moving
