Google+ forced on me throughout the purchase process... - Moto X Q&A

Okay, I realize this may be more of a rant than a question but...
I purchased a VZ dev edition Moto X and couldn't create a non G+ account to order the phone so I ordered as a guest. Now if I try to check the order status I can't get a status update unless I sign up for a G+ account.
Does the attempted forcing of G+ get any less extreme when trying to get developer software for the phone, or do anything for that matter?
This whole G+ thing is starting to make me dislike Android.

So deal with it. This is what comes along with the device. Im tired of people whining about it and not putting effort into finding a way to deal with it. Make one and forget about it.

Put your money where your mouth is and post like this under your full name... Sorry, I refuse to deal with it and I'm not even an a$$ when I post.

I think we (as in Android fans) need to realize that Google+ is definitely the future focus of Google. We're seeing that with GMail, Hangouts, search results, Youtube comments, etc.
Google+ will be your Google account completely, in the end. I think they've been pretty vocal about it. Personally, I like using Google+ (many of my nerdy coworkers and friends are on it), so it's not a big deal to me. But I can see how it rubs some the wrong way.
Unfortunately, YOU WILL EVENTUALLY JOIN THE GOOGLE+ BORG HIVE MIND, RESISTANCE IS FUTILE

Unfortunately I believe you are right. I Can find old usenet posts from 1994 that I made. Although they aren't bad or embarrassing they seem kind of silly when I read them 20 Years later and I really wish they would go away.
On the positive side I had my kids search my name and read the messages and after laughing at me they realized the permanence of putting silly information on the interwebs.
I really dislike Apple but G+ just may be enough to push me to the dark side or I'll have to create an online alter ego.

Dear OP,
You will need a Google account on the phone most likely, but here's something that I wanted to share with you...
Did you try to call MOTO for an update? You might be surprised that if you call, a goog account isn't even needed. I know, I know, the kids these days... WTF is a call. :good::good:

I don't mind the google account it's the all too public, for me, G+ account that I don't want. Heck I don't even have a Facebook or Twitter account. My life is too mundane for me to want to advertise to the world besides, I keep in touch with everyone from my past that I care to talk to and have little desire to know about the rest.
I'm already working on my alter ego posts... "I ate at McDonalds today and almost shat myself on the way back to work. It was so bad that I could barely get out of the car and if anyone bumped into me, well that would have been it!" Maybe I should make an amount and just post nonsense.

Android is just an OS albeit more open than IOS but that too appears to be changing, if android/google weren't forcing unwanted requirements on users this conversation wouldn't be taking place. The big question is what's next on the agenda?

So you don't have a gmail account and prefer not to create one, and you're disappointed with Google?
No sarcasm. A friend of mine never touched G+ but he does have a gmail and it's not a problem with purchasing it through MotoMaker.
When I bought mine here in Canada, they also request a gmail account. Not G+. (albeit I do have G+ active using my gmail)
I don't get what's the problem here...

G+ account is forced on anyone with a Google account. Can't get around it. That being said, you can (just like me) set all of your preferences to "just me"or whatever and then never use it. Honestly the privacy settings on it are easy. It's all just a way for Google to inflate their number of g+ "users." Makes business sense for them and is easy enough to ignore on the consumer end.

No I have a Gmail account, was in during the first betas.
I'll have to set up a dummy g+ account to see how it works. I did set up a g+ account early on and deleted it when it made my share by link picassa family photos available when my name was searched on Google. I ended up deleting everything from picassa, and now use a synology nas for all of my personal files and pictures.
I guess I'll be one of the last cloud holdouts which is ironic because I was online before http.

I believe the OP is referring to the checkout page on Motomaker you are given the option to checkout as a Guest or login with G+ for the ability to track the status of your Motomaker order which requires you to setup a Motorola ID which itself requires using a G+ account.

But G+ account is nothing more than any Google account is it not???
If you have Gmail account, you have a G+ account automagically. Am I missing anything here? Do you need to active your G+ or something? Have a few meaningless posts and people in your circles to have it activated?

That's simply because girls are already drawn to Facebook and wouldn't want to port over all their info from Facebook to Google+ if they have all their friends on Facebook.

i didnt realize i needed a social network to score women. i was under the impression that im already popular with the ladies and can get some, like i said, without a social network.
either way, there will come a certain point in time where google+ might possibly overtake facebook. just like facebook overtook myspace. and all other social networking sites. although im not sure if it will be apple friendly. that might affect the popularity.

You obviously missed my point.
Without female support social networking would've never reached it's current height, it would be just another internet pipe dream. Whether it's guys trying to "pick up chicks" or just the fact that women are ~50% of the population, having a female presence is essential if Google+ is to get anywhere.

Only room for one social networking site

So Google+ is soon to be released to the public. Do you think Facebook is to big and powerful to fall
Or is Google simply to powerful to fail?
Sent from my HTC HD2 using Tapatalk
Facebook is dead. Google has all other smartphone competitors by the gonads now with Google+. G+ will be the prevailing social site and Google will have total control of it and whether they allow competitors to use it. Facebook will be a sinking weight on Google's competitors because of it dying off.
Only time will tell.
Both could exist - it's possible. There are the people who are sick of facebook and that whole ecosystem that want to move to the next best thing. But then there are the people who are engrained into facebook and so are their friends, and they have no motivation to leave it. Its up for grabs really.
Apple users and non geeks will stick to facebook....
The rest of us will use G+ and probably peek at facebook once a day to see what people we dont give a crap about are up to....
Or something....
Edit;
How until we see a social network from Apple??
Ping or whatever that crap was/is called doesnt count as that is obvious fail.....

Moved to Off-topic.
I use G+ a few times per day. It won't be replacing Facebook for me, as practically all my friends are on there. I do like the discussions and cool posts on G+ though.
I was hoping to use g+ the way I was using tumblr. Posting pics, writing certain things that are only viewable by me. What's really getting to me though is just the way uploading pictures work. Not being able to upload a picture on my phone to a specific album really kills it for me.
I use it daily. But not as a facebook replacement. More of a place to meet new people and read interesting posts that dont involve rants and poor grammar lol.

Nope, I don't use Google+ much at all. I started using Facebook a long time ago. When I got a Google+ account, I didn't know how to use it and it was a hassle to learn everything. I switched back to Facebook.
I used it before, but not anymore. I deleted my profile when i noticed that G+ is the same as FB. The only difference is that i have real friends on FB, and not just some random Germans and Americans that just have to show what they had for dinner today, or post 18 random Google Image images a day, just to get +1.
I have used G+ a bit to see what it's like...but I end up just using Facebook for everything social. Plus, way more people I know are on FB anyway.

Whats the best Wifi-only IM solution to chat between iOS and Android?

Hey everyone, I didn't know where to post this. Theres a no-iphone rule in the General section, so I thought this would be safe. I would normally ask iOS questions on an iOS Forum, but this is something that I'm only going to get dumb answers on an iOS forum.
We're wanting to buy my 10 year old daughter an iPod Touch for Christmas. She actually wants an HD video camera, but the iPod Touch serves that purpose, plus it would be cool to let her iMessage chat, and Face Time with all her cousins, grandparents, ect. Everyone in our family uses iOS devices, except me.
I detest iOS with a passion, but I'm not going to be as bull-headed as to buy her a Galaxy Player, and force all our relatives to sign up for Google Talk accounts just to chat with her. iOS just makes more sense.
Heres my question: I want to be able to chat with her from my Android devices. It would be a frosty day in hell I would let her get a Facebook account, so Google Talk is the obvious choice. Except that apparently there isn't a Google Talk app for iOS. It looks like Google merged it into their Google+ app. But I'm certainly not setting her up with a Google+ account.
I want to do both Video Chat, and IM. I'm considering maybe just setting her up with a Skype account, and relying on that for both IM and Video. Anyone have any other good solutions?
Thanks
Skype, or the trusty old AIM which looks a lot different now. lol
Skype. Most other cross platform apps have limitations or make you pay.
But if you set up her G+ account then set it up completely private.

That was one of my thoughts. My biggest concern is that she could change her settings (unwittingly). But I suppose the App probably wouldn't let her do that.
Maybe if I set up the account, and didn't tell her the password?

Do they allow users to search for eachother? Or do you need to know somebody's details to add them? I'm mostly worried strangers adding her, and trying to video chat with her.

Tracking My Actions

So I'm new with android, and the Moto X. I come from a long line of Nokia dumb phones so please forgive my ignorance.
I got the moto x yesterday, and it has changed my understanding of what a phone can be. But I never thought it would go this far....
First it told me where my house was, and how long it would take me to arrive. That was odd enough. Then last night a friend called me and texted me setting up a dinner date. I said sure I would go, then I proceeded to search up the menu of said restaurant.
The next thing I know I have a tile on my home screen telling me how long it would take me to arrive at the resturant.
No interaction, no Facebook invite, no nothing.
So how in the hell does this phone know so much about me??
Cool and all, just confused.

Yep. Google does track your locations, but you agreed to it. It keeps a tab on your most common locations, so after time, it'll figure out where your work and where you live.

Also, if you do searches using Google on your computer Google now will catch it and ve you the same directions you just searched for on your phone. Its really quite nice. If you get an email to your gmail account with shipping info google now will keep track of your package for you too.
I just wish Google would implement the Gmail stuff for the built-in (at minimum) email client. Not everyone uses Gmail and thus they lose out on, IMO, most useful options of Google Now.

As others have said, Google builds an 'ecosystem' - if you use Chrome on your desktop and you sign in, and you sign in to Chrome on your phone and tablet, when you search on one, it will propogate not only your bookmarks but also your recent searches.
It's a little creepy at first, and I think also a reminder that someone is always watching, but it's also very convenient. It's great for me to search for a place on my PC browser, hop into my car, and have my phone tell me how far away I am and with one tap get turn-by-turn navigation.
Welcome to the world of Android and the moto X and enjoy!
