[Q] Carrier support deficiency syndrome - Moto X Q&A

After doing several searches on the Moto X forum, I have only found one thread that even mentions my carrier which is C Spire, or Cspire, or C-Spire which ever way it would be listed. The MotoX is fairly new to Cspire which may explain the lack of activity. Cspire uses a XT1049 model on the Lte network. The rooting threads that I've seen seem to be carrier specific or at least ask you to download a carrier specific apk. I am on 4.2.2 now and my system version is 139.4.3.ghost_row.ACGLTE.en.US. My build number is13.9.0Q2.X-191-TA-3. I have rooted 4 other android devices, but none of the others stressed carrier specific root methods. I am only looking to root my device not unlock the bootloader at this time. Am I reading to much into my problem? Thanks for any responses.

From the CSpire website the phone operates on these frequencies: LTE 1900 MHz; CDMA 850/1900 MHz

is your model the same as any of the other major carriers? then it should be a similar method right?

Rooting shouldn't change the radio should it. Really I don't know why it would matter. Somebody please explain.

[Q] Galaxy S4 active LTE incompatibility in the U.S?

I`d like to purchase a Samsung Galaxy S4 active i9525 i537 on Ebay.
It`s defined as LTE but I understand there are incompatibilities with some or all united states LTE carriers.
I don`t understand though whether these incompatibilities apply to all versions of this smartphone and whether there`s a workaround or not.
Is there a specific model of this smartphone that can do LTE in the U.S. and another model that cannot?
I tried googling this issue real hard, and found zilch.

The AT&T model i537 is the one for LTE in the US.

The I9295 I believe is the international version of this phone. The phone that is exclusive to AT&T is the i537 which WILL work on their LTE network. I don't have actual experience with the 9295 but I'm sure there's others on here who have. I guess it depends which carrier you plan to use that will dictate which phone to get.

Does this mean that the i537 will NOT work on other LTE networks outside th U.S?
You see, I might be using this phone in the U.S for a limited period but my main usage will be in Israel that is expecting an LTE network at the end of this year on LTE band 3 1800MHZ
Will the i537 cover them both or should I go with the I9525 and give up the U.S?

You're prolly better off with the 9295 it wont get LTE in the US though but looks like it does support 1800. The 537 doesn't use 1800. Please don't quote me on this though, I don't have experience with phones outside of AT&T's network. They're all I've ever used.

[Q] Note 3 AT&T(unlocked) vs international

So I am planning on pre-ordering the N9005. My problem is that I travel frequently between the states and Europe. So I either get LTE here or in Europe.
I have always gotten the international versions for my other devices (S2,Note2,S3,note 10.1 3g). But since I spend most of the year in the states I wanted to get the AT&T LTE version.
However, I don't really want the AT&T firmwares, so I was wondering if I could flash an international firmware on the AT&T unlocked note 3? One of the reasons for this is I know that for instance you could not do tethering without rooting your phone (I am planning on rooting mine) on your AT&T handheld.
I know it's not a big deal, but I want my phone to have the international firmware of my choice, not AT&T's. Thank you

I would like to know the answer to this as well. Here are the two versions I am eyeing:

Well, the international version won't work on either, you need the 1700/2100 (I.e. 1700) band for the international version to work on either networks, and that's missing from the international version. So I want to know the downsides of getting the att version.

Not trying to start an argument or anything but just wondering, are you positive about that? The international version has the 2100 band as well as the 850 band and I have read in multiple places, as well as hearing during the Samsung unveiling that it would work on AT&T LTE...
Maybe I'm just confused?

Since I am new here, I can't post any links still, but if you go to newegg dot com or to negrielectronics dot com you can see the specs for the international version, they are missing the 1700 band.

Like the other user said you need the 1700 band to get AT&T LTE frequency. The 850 band is for H+ at&t so yes the international version will only work on at&t H+.
What Samsung probably meant by " it will work on all networks" is that they will support all LTE networks if you buy the correct model for your network.

You should only get the AT&T variant if you prove that LTE is faster than HSPA+ in your area. Either use your current phone or use one at an AT&T store and turn off LTE. Run a speed test, turn LTE back on and run the test again, and compare.
It's possible to some international ROMs on carrier branded devices, but not all are compatible. At the VERY least, you'll have to manually configure the AT&T APN, you may also have to manually re-flash radios in order to connect to AT&T towers.
Some crafty devs have made an Aroma installer to do all this stuff while it loads their ROM:

Just know that you're in for a bit more tinkering if you plan on going this route. But there's no reason to go through all the trouble if there isn't LTE in your area or it currently runs poorly.

Im pretty sure by Unlocked they mean Sim Unlocked( u can use on other networks). There is no AT&T units that we know of to confirm whether its bootloader locked or not, but we are only assuming based on recent at&t attempts to lock down their devices.

You're probably right. I think the AT&T will be bootloader locked as well based on the S4 being locked down.

Actually, according to AT&T's website and to their phones' specs, you don't need the 700 band, just the 1700/2100 (I.e. 1700) band.
I believe only Sprint uses the 700 band for lte
Edit: I looked at the AT&T website again, I believe they plan on using the 700 band in the future, but they are not utilizing it now. I might be wrong, so don't take my word for it.

Actually FCC just approved AT&T's purchase of 700 Mhz spectrum so they will utilize the said band for LTE and Wimax possibly

May I ask why t-mobile's unlocked note 3 is not in your list? It appears it will work equally well on AT&T, and there's a much greater chnace of it having an unlocked bootloader. There aren't as many 4G frequencies, so maybe LTE when you're abroad won't always work, but if you want to flash ROMs then an unlocked bootloader is important!
I am in a similar situation to you, and I was planning to go with T-Mobile unlocked. Part of me wants to forget LTE and go with the Exynos, but I fear dev support will be limited.

If I get the t-Mobile version then i wouldn't have 4G nor 3G in Europe. Europe mostly operates on the 1900 band for 3G(or at least where I travel to), and T-Mobile's phones don't support this.

I agree. FWIW, I remember reading a few month ago that AT&T released a semi-official statement (it may have been a tweet, or a response to an online article) that all of their android phones will ship with locked bootloaders from now on. Maybe if Samsung really pushed at&t to keep them unlocked, or at least offer a path to unlock (a la HTC's dev program), then it could happen... but I bet Samsung is happy the bootloader is locked; even though they ship the international model unlocked, I imagine they would prefer if it too was locked, but they don't have a convenient excuse outside of the US, where they can just blame AT&T. I LOVE samsung hardware, but looking at exynos documentation and other policies, they don't seem to welcome tinkering.

Darn... but maybe when LTE becomes more prevalent in europe, they'll use some of the same bands as the t-mo version?
I had an HTC One X on AT&T, and eventually a clever dev found a way to get root access and partially unlock the bootloader, but it was such a hassle. For developers, I'm doubt it seemed very hard, but for me, getting it unlocked, and then updating ROMs, flashing radios, boot images, older firmware, newer firmware, trying to find out what was causing a bootloop... It wasn't even worth the headache, I should have just kept it stock (and stock AT&T is pretty terrible when you've been using cyanogenmod for three years). I bought a Nexus 4 soon after, I never want to deal with all that nonsense again!
If only I could wait a couple of months to see what the developer/bootloader situation looks like, I'd probably get the AT&T version if a relatively safe and easy bootloader unlock exploit is found, but I'm too eager to wait, so unless someone miraculously finds an exploit by October 1st, I'm probably going international or t-mobile. It seems like international is the safest bet: 3G coverage everywhere and good support (unless exynos drives everyone away), but I live in DC and the LTE speeds are incredibly good. It's a tough choice!

Verizon HTC 1 to T-mobile

Hey everyone. So i have a question that i can't find on here so im going to ask it. I have a Verizon HTC one unlocked. The sim car works fine and i can do everything on the phone with the T-mobile sim card. The issue is its always Edge data. Is there a specfic APN i have to use? something im not seeing? Does anyone else have this issue? It is a stock factory HTC One, nothing custom.

I don't think the Verizon model will have the correct radio frequencies to use T-Mo's LTE or HSPA+ network, hence you're stuck on Edge. If you're staying with T-Mo, I'd suggest selling your current One and buying a T-Mo specific HTC One.

Global Network: EDGE/GSM (850/900/1800/1900), HSPA/UMTS(1900/2100) aGPS capable for E911 emergency location, aGPS (assisted), sGPS (simultaneous), Standalone GPS, eCompass, GLONASS
T-mobile uses the 1900 Mhz base band and the HSPA as well. So i don't see the issue in that one.

From what I can tell, nobody uses the dual 1900/2100 to achieve 4G like TMO. The UMTS referred to on that phone is for worldwide use, not US. So while it may have the frequencies, it is not set up to use them like TMO. Your software and firmware are set up to work with Verizon and overseas, not with a competitor like TMO. TMO refers to theirs as HSPA+. However, it might work on the new "reframed" 1900 bands (which is called HSPA), but those are not very highly deployed. Unfortunately, I don't see LTE on that list of frequencies. The TMO LTE is really great. EDIT: I mean TMO LTE, which is also 1700/2100.
I suppose you could try unlocking it and flashing the TMO radio, but there is an entire thread on trying to unlock TMO frequencies (in that case on the developer version), and no one has figured it out yet.

Yeah thats what im thinking. I need to contact and t-mobile rep and see if the re-farmed LTE here. Ill call and ask.
Alright so i called the rep and he said the area i am has been re-farmed to the 1900 range and i should be getting at least HSPA/3G but im not. Very odd issue

Verison use the CDMA, maybe that's why you can only use 2.5G network, just like some phones in China, they only have GSM in common

yes but this phone has 4g lte already in it which accepts the sim card. Also, i have seen other verizon htc ones with t-mobile and never had a issue. I fell i may have to use a custom rom.

What he is referring to is that what Verizon uses as "3G" is CDMA technology. So although they (T-Mobile and Verizon) may be on the same frequency they're using totally different technologies. Just because it has a sim card slot for a Verizon sim doesn't mean the device will be compatible with another carrier's sim. A custom ROM would not resolve this issue. Your best bet would be to sell this device and purchase one from T-Mobile. :fingers-crossed:

I know what the best way to go is but i am very curious as to what is really keeping it from going out of edge. baseband? Is the TMO and Verizon radios the same? these are things i need to know! >.<

My understanding is that the devices run on different systems for 3G and different LTE bands. You wont get more than GSM compatibility (GPRS, EDGE). Hopefully it is something that a software hack can fix but if you read around all the HTC One forums you will see no one has found it. Right now it is not possible.

My question is that HTC makes phones for all T mobile verison sprint the same, so I believe its just software problem that we cant use Tmobile 4g lte on Verizon unlocked phone. SO does anyone have any comment for that?

It is hardware not software that is the issue. The T-Mobile variant has different bands than the other variants including Verizon. T-Mobile is a GSM variant while Verizon is a CDMA variant. Here is a comparison of the specs for the variants.
CDMA and GSM technology requires the antenna to be done differently. If they are not programmed to use those signals. Nothing you can dox will change it short of putting a new antenna in.

Because you can only unlock GSM. Cdma uses the serial/esn number of the device.
Has there been any update on this? I called tmobile and they said it was simply because I couldn't put in the APN. So, there's no chance that rooting the phone and putting a tmobile rom on it would fix the problem and let me get more than edge speeds.
I myself have been wondering the answer to this. The device might seem the same but under the cover they are different. The actual daughter board which the camera, vibrating thing, volume rocker, power button are connected to are fairly different from each other. The CDMA variant is not compatible with the GSM variant. Not even by adding a CDMA daughter board to the GSM motherboard and vice versa, the are made quiet differently and will not be able to use GSM bands on a CDMA m7

[Q] XT1058 vs XT1053 & flashing them

I have seen several posts on flashing XT1053(retail/tmobile/developer) firmware on XT1058(AT&T/Rogers/etc) hardware. I believe most people were only doing the OS though and not the entire flash(including the radio/modem)
The XT1053 is FCC ID ihdt56pa2 and includes: gsm 850/900/1800/1900, wcdma 1700/850/1900 and LTE bands 02,04 and 17
The XT1058 is FCC ID ihdt56pa1 and includes: gsm 850/900/1800/1900, wcdma 850/1900 and LTE bands 02,04,05 and 17
So the differences are that the XT1053 supports wcdma 1700 and the XT1058 supports LTE band 05.
Wcdma 1700 is the same frequency range as LTE band 04, LTE band 05 is 850 Mhz. So it would really seem the two models should both be able to support the same frequencies/bands. The iFixit tear down of an XT1058 indicated it has a multimode power amplifier module for Quad-Band GSM / EDGE and Penta-Band (Bands I, II, IV, V, VIII) WCDMA/ HSDPA/ HSUPA/ HSPA+/ LTE. It also has a separate power amp for LTE bands 12 and 17.
I can't see Motorola applying for multiple FCC ID certifications if the hardware really was identical but who really knows what the differences are. Is there a limitation to the total number of bands the phone controller can handle, so in one phone they selected wcdma 1700 and the other they selected LTE band 05? Is it possible AT&T wanted a phone that specifically couldn't do wcdma 1700 mhz?
I'm reasonably new to android and haven't done a lot of flashing, can someone please confirm if the full retail flash from an XT1053 can be loaded into an XT1058 (I assume an unlocked bootloader is required). And if someone has done it can they report back that the radio portion of the flash is updated and what the results are.
I'm also puzzled why Motorola got Canadian certification for the XT1058 model. If they had the XT1053 certified for use in Canada it would work on 5 providers instead of the three the XT1058 supports here(again unless that was purposely selected by Rogers Canada so the phone couldn't be used on two of the other providers here once sim unlocked).

Rogers Canada has the 1058 , I usually flash at&t Roms but I have flashed t-mobile Roms too.

Flash retail developer edition in xt1058 unlocked bootloader
Hello, this is my first first post, but i have been reading this forum since years ago.
I have a XT1058, i bought it in Mexico (America Movil version, shipped with locked bootloader). Following Motorola instructions I acquire to unlock the bootloader, then I followed one thread from here and flashed the AT&T KitKat, everithing is running fine so far.
Now I'm wondering is possible or anyone from here have the experience of flash a developer firmware in a XT1058 with unlocked bootloader (MOTO X, GSM Dev Edition:KK 4.4-13.11.1Q2.X-69-3_MR2 (Retail)), I want a more clean installation, without the bloatware included in the AT&T rom.
It is possible to mess the radios? I want to keep the LTE service.
Any comment will be really appreciated.

I have a PR XT1058 and I'm running the Retail 4.4 ROM that you mentioned above and it's running fine. Apart from a little higher battery drain (I think), there's nothing to complain about.
I am also using the retail(tmobile) 4.4 with XT1058 hardware. I did flash the NON_HLOS.bin and fsg.mbn from the AT&T 4.4(XT1058 hardware) build though. I can't say for certain it makes a difference but I really feel like I see less time without a signal. I don't use 2600 Mhz/Band 7 LTE so I can't say if it is enabled or disabled at the moment.

Excellent. I have no weird drains of any kind. I don't use wifi at all and only turn location services on if needed. I generally have the phone off charge for 17 hours per day, 2 hours of screen on time and end the day with 60 to 70% battery remaining. Most days I see a no signal percentage of 1 to 3%, if I disable LTE I will see no signal loss at all. My LTE is on the AWS band so its not super strong most places and only works upstairs at my house, in the basement I go back to HSPA.
I have switched between the AT&T 4.4 and the retail 4.4 build several times. I really did feel the AT&T build gave slightly better battery life until I flashed the modems. It is not a big enough difference to really quantify though. I have thought maybe the modem code in the Moto X was the same in all builds and it just selected the proper radios based on the detected hardware. I don't believe that is actually the case any longer though as I have read people with XT1058 hardware have lost the 2600 mhz band with the stock retail modem.
If my provider used the 2600 mhz band I'd test and verify but it is the other provider in town using it.

Wow I wish I could say the same! My phone is currently at 15h 55m on battery and I'm down to 47%. Mobile data is off but everything else is on. Screen time is 37m.

I just compared the md5 hashes of NON-HLOS.bin from ATT_XT1058_4.2.2-13.9.0Q2.X-116-X-17-54_CFC_1FF.xml and TMO_RETAIL_XT1053_4.2.2-13.9.0Q2.X-116-X-17-57_MR1_CFC.xml and they don't match. So the modem code in the Moto X is not the same in all builds, I think it's actually the other way round. I think the modem hardware is the same in all models and it just selects the proper radios based on loaded ROM.
On the weekend I didn't charge the phone Saturday night, phone was off charger for two days, 3.5 hours of screen on time, still had 25% when I plugged it in last night. I really found my biggest drain was the GPS and wifi looking for location all the time. I could care less if I ever use wifi so I leave it off. I don't want anything tracking me so I prefer to have GPS off completely. It does mean certain features don't work as well as intended though, I can't just ask google to tell me the temperature outside, it will get the location wrong as it has to fall back to my providers wireless IP location which is not that close to me.
Also got my dream phrase to work pretty good, I use "ok skynet now" to get the X to do stuff for me.

I am pretty sure it is actually different, if they could make one hardware model they would as it would save them a ton of money. Receiving the FCC certifications for the different hardware is expensive, as is making more then one model. I know using the retail build does not magically enable HSPA/WCDMA on band 4 on my XT1058, I've checked several times.
Or if they aren't different they are programmed as different from the factory. If you do a "fastboot getvar all" you can see there is a flag which sets the radio hardware installed, it is 0x01 for an XT1058 and different for other models.

I bought a used AT&T Moto X XT1058, now running KitKat 4.4 on the stock rom, but rooted so that I could use my Tmobile SIM.
I've been trying to find a way to flash the retail version of KitKat 4.4 in place of the AT&T rom, but I don't see how to do it with a locked bootloader. Can you explain (or point to a thread) how you were able to switch from AT&T 4.4 to retail 4.4?

My XT1058 is from Rogers Canada, they allow bootloader unlocking. I don't think it can be done with a locked bootloader.

I don't think @Steve-x has an AT&T XT1058, he probably has one of those Latin American XT1058s (like mine) which bootloader can be unlocked.
Edit: He just confirmed that it's actually a Canadian XT1058.
Afaik, you cannot flash another carrier's ROM with a locked bootloader unless both carrier ROMs have the same CID. For example, all Latin American ROMs are CID12, so I think you can flash ROMs from different Latin American carriers on a Latin American phone without unlocking the bootloader, but you wouldn't be able to flash another ROM which has a different CID.
I 'm not sure what CID the Retail US ROM has, but I don't think it has the same CID as the AT&T ROM.

Hi, I also flashed unmodéle XT1058 AmericaMovil with TMO-Rom XT1053 and my Moto x became a 1053 XT, so it's great ROM that determines xTxxx type and not the hardware.

[Q] XT1097 user now XT1095 user

Quick rundown of my situation....
I was using an XT1097 on AT&T, broke my screen and went through Motorola to replace it. For a replacement they sent me an XT1095. Opened it up and immediately took the Lollipop update but everything on it is T-Mo, including the baseband. Maybe it's just in my head but I feel like the 4G coverage is not the same. Places at my job I used to get service and 4G do not work anymore or are very spotty. Would having all the T-Mo info on it affect me? Is there anyway to put the AT&T stuff back on it? I unlocked the bootloader, rooted and installed TWRP.
Just not sure what my options are....

The hardware is different. AT&T uses a LTE band that the 1095 is missing. Maybe changing the APN could have more signal but I doubt ...

XT1095 (GSM Unlocked US Pure edition), UMTS Bands (850/900/1700/1900/2100), LTE Bands (2/3/4/5/7/17/29) [Sim unlocked and capatable with most GSM networks including AT&T and T-Mobile; LTE bands software restricted to 2/4/17]

try flashing a xt1097 modem in order to use the LTE bands you company requires.

I was't sure if there were any risks in doing that but I will certainly look into it....
I guess I've been lucky, my xt1095 works just as great as my xt1097 did on att.
There is a thread over on motorola's forum that states that the software restriction to 2/4/17 present on XT1095 with KK was removed with the OTA to LL. So it should support the same LTE bands as the ATT version.
Performance between the two phones should be identical as they have the exact same hardware and Motorola enabled all of the bands on the XT1095.
I have seen phones take time to build a list of available signals in the area though.

So once MoFo is opened up for the ATT XT1097, they should be able to flash XT1095 images as long as they are in ext4 format?
Or another way of thinking about it, if the ATT XT1097's bootloader could be unlocked (i know currently it can't be) then they should be able to flash XT1095 Custom ROMs correct?
Yes it should be fine. It's the same thing done with XT1097's from other providers that do allow boot loader unlocking such as Telus and Wind Mobile in Canada.

No, it hasn't been removed yet. It's been confirmed that at some point they will activate those bands but it hasn't been done yet.

It's definitely not identical and from what I've read they have not activated all of the bands yet. Hopefully soon.

Are you sure? There are people posting over at Motorola's forum saying that since they took the LL OTA with the new baseband, they have been able to get LTE on bands 3,5 and 7.
I can't check this myself. I always connect to ATT's LTE on band 17 on my XT1095. I used LTE discovery to see what band I was using when connected.
From what I've seen/read they still weren't added but I could be wrong. I really hope I am right because in my case the experience between the XT1097 and XT1095 has been very different. I will give LTE discovery a try and see what's up.

I am 99.99999% sure the bands were enabled. Several people in Canada are using the XT1095 with LTE bands 2,4,5,7 and 17.
