[Q] Rear camera blur problem. Anyone?

This is my first post here, so first of all, hello everyone and greetings from Finland!
I bought the IS about two weeks ago. Today I took my first outdoor pics and noticed a strange phenomenon. If I focus on a distant object (typical for outdoor shots), the extreme right-hand side of the photo is quite mushy and blurred. The affected area is only about 200 pixels wide (starting from the edge) and goes all the way from top to bottom. Everything else, including the left side, is tack sharp (well, as sharp as it can be with this camera anyway). This happens with every photo, if the focusing distance is relatively long. Close-range shots (indoor pics, for example) are just fine, also the right-hand sides of the photos turn out sharp. This is very strange.
I'm a very experienced photographer, so it's not my technique. Something is wrong with the optics alignment, sensor or it could be a software issue. With optical problems the close-range shots are usually more problematic because of short depth-of-field, which makes the alignment errors much more visible.
Anyone else having similar experiences? Take an outdoor shot using a focusing distance of, let's say, 20-50 meters (or yards) and see if the right side of the image is as sharp as the left side. Make sure there's something with lots of detail near the edges of the image. I would be much less worried, if both sides of the photos were softish. After all, that would be quite typical for less-than-stellar optics found in camera phones. It's the asymmetry that bothers me.
This is actually my only gripe with this phone. Apart from this unpleasant surprise I really like the IS.

Thanks for the tip!
I did a bit more controlled experimenting and sadly it seems that also close-distance shots suffer from the same right-hand side blurriness. If I take a photo of a completely flat surface, focusing on the center part of the viewing area, the extreme right-hand side of the photo is soft. There's nothing wrong with the left-hand side. Also, the affected area is almost 400 pixels wide (wide angle setting, no zooming). I also rotated the phone 180 degrees and took comparison shots. And...the left-hand side was blurry.
Maybe I have a bad sample. I can't exchange it for a new one, so I guess I have to live with it or have the local HTC service take a look at it. I'm not too keen on doing that.

Thanks for your comment, good to know your camera is working fine!
I'm suspecting there's dirt inside the lens assembly or on the sensor. My IS is now being serviced at the local HTC service center. I'll let you know how this turns out.

Camera Tint? Blue?

Anyone else notice their stock camera taking more blueish photos in various lighting?
I primarily use Camera 360, and that seems to compensate for the blue stock camera tint?
But, I must say the stock camera app is quite nice.

I am not seeing that on my camera, but I have only snapped a couple of pics in bright light and have not checked on the computer.
Are you sure your camera is not set to "Blue Tint"? On the bottom of the camera is a bar you can slide to open, the second item has options for different camera modes.

yes, I did notice this. Seems to depend on the lighting.

I've noticed a blue tint with the flash on in lower light indoor pictures. I think the camera will take some adjustments to work well. Outside it took pictures just fine. I had to have the flash off the for almost all indoor pictures.

It's definitely blue-ish/whited out with the flash and I use Vignette.
Hopefully a software update will help correct this a little bit.

Noticed this right away as well, mainly in fluorescent light. This is definitely correctable via software and from what I understand is a known issue on a very long list of known issues for this device.

Another thing I thought of - when a friend of mine got the OG Droid back in the day when it came out, I was very impressed with the camera and camcorder.
With the DX2 and D3 I'm a bit disappointed, it's almost like they took a step back. I feel like the OG Droid is better at video and photos than my Xoom as well.
Does anyone else feel like their cameras have gotten a little worse over time? I remember the Razr had some of the sharpest 1.3 MP photos (as well as Samsung and of course Nokia has always kicked ass in the photo department).
Wow, 1.3 MP... that's like the standard for a lot of front facing cameras that aren't VGA. Oh, and the 2 MP FF camera on the Xoom is grainy as **** in artificial lighting.
Other than the camera and battery issues, I LOOOOVEEE this D3. I miss a keyboard too much. And I feel like this screen is less grainy than the DX2 (but from what I gather the screen resolution would look denser on a smaller screen, right, since it's not spread out as much with the same pixels?).

HTC One Camera - very blurry

I just purchased the HTC one for sprint a few days ago.
I have been taking mostly indoor vidoes/pictures under normal lighting conditions.
And all the pics are awful. They are blurry , not focused properly and the photo just looks horrible - like one taken from a bad camera phone.
I have tried messing with the settings...tried HDR mode...zoe mode. Still...pictures come out very grainy or just plain out of focus.
Is this a defect or what? Im hearing all these great things about the camera , but the pics don't come close to what my 4 year old HTC Evo takes.
Should I try to exchange it out for another at sprint store ? anyone else having this issue?

Is the lens dirty or covered by anything? Try tapping the screen to focus. Do you have a sample to show us?

The photos are grainy because of the ultra pixel system that they used in this camera. It is sort of a trade off really....in order to get those nice low light shots they had to devise a camera with larger light sensitive cells. It is like in the old film days when you used 1600 speed film for low light conditions but ended up with pictures that were super grainy. Same concept but now in digital form.

I know what the OP is talking about, this is a different issue than just having grainy pictures. Mine cannot seem to focus on anything more than 10 ft away. I'm attaching an example from a graduation last night. The focus was so bad that I will not using any of these pictures for anything.

And yes I tapped on the screen multiple times to get it to focus, this is what came out. I can replicate this basically anytime when taking pictures of anything kind of far away. It freaking sucks.

This is not due to not focusing or pics being slightly grainy
Im saying the pics are awful.. Way out of focus and look distorted, phone is only 3 days old so it's not a dirty lens
Taking this back to sprint today... Will update you guys on what they do for me..

I've had time where the front camera is blurry from smudges on the lens taking it out of my pocket. Wiping off the lens helps. It happens pretty frequently actually.

I went to the sprint store yesterday and they exchanged it out for a new HTC one.
Same problem with the new one. Blurry images, out of focus objects, when you zoom in the images, they are too grainy/fuzzy.
I'm now beginning to understand that it's not a hardware problem, but just a bad camera on the HTC One.
I have been comparing pictures over the past 3 days from HTC One vs my 3 year old Galaxy S2 phone.
The galaxy s2 phone pictures are significantly more clear, crisp and more detailed.
The HTC One pictures are routinely blurry, noisy and just plain out of focus in certain areas.
The HTC one pictures look good when you look at them zoomed out...but when you pinch n zoom in, you begin to see fuzzy edges and blurred focus. This does not happen on my S2.
The S2 images are 3.5 MB with resolution of 3264x2448
The HTC one images are 2.17 MB with resolution of 2688x1520
So, clearly, the galaxy s2 pics are going to look better.
I love everything about the HTC one , but the camera is a total disappointment. I wish it was a hardware defect so I could swap it for a better unit, but I suppose that's just how it is

I am on badseed rom and I opened zip and replaced the camera.apk with the new one found in international roms and wiped and reflashed and my camera is 1000% better . The one I used is from cleanrom 2.0

Mine has been the same way and I use it a lot for work. I will try the different apk.

Is this an effect of running custom roms? Isn't all the after picture stuff done via image sense?

Not sure all I know is ever since I've had the phone (I've used stock, Viper, and badseed) it's been that way.

I replaced the camera apk and reflashed my rom and the issue is still there.
It's like it only focuses in the center of the picture... everything around the center is blurry even if i touch the screen outside the center.
Here are some examples:

I'm using the xda app which doesn't handle pics very well, so it's hard to tell for sure but it sounds like you're complain about the depth of field - area of importance in focus, background/foreground blurry.

The HTC one uses a camera with a f/2.0 or so lens. This means it can allow lots of light in. The lower this number is, the more light passes through the lens. There's a catch, this extra light isn't as sharp. Parts of the image fall out of focus. This is called shallow depth of field. The lower the f-stop (f number), the shallower the depth of field. There's a distance from the lens that's the sweet spot in focus, adjusting focus repositions where the sweet spot is, but the sweet spot is smaller on lower f-stops

Still don't really understand the issue... Never had these problems with my GS3. And it really has nothing to do with background/foreground... Everything that is the same distance form the lens that is outside the center is blurry as %^#@.

I took another look outside the app at the pics. I think it's a shallow depth of field. Our camera is capable of a much lower f-stop than most others. The average consumer camera it around 3.5 f-stop for example. Until the HTC amaze, android phones never had an f-stop this low. I'm not sure what the galaxy's used though.
The pic of the signs tells me a lot that this is the case. Most people like this effect as it's artsy. The sign on the left is in focus and closer to the camera, the sign to the right is further away and not in focus. This is what depth of field is. Shallow depth of field is a smaller area in focus.
Now, I don't want to make excuses for HTC. The f-stop isn't a fixed number. It's supposed to be adjustable in cameras, we just may not have the option to. Try using landscape mode. That should keep everything in focus. This depth of field shouldn't be for every pic

If you reflashed the rom after installing the new camera apk then the old camera app will still be there since you relfashed the rom. If anything flash the newer camera apk after not before.

I replaced the APK inside the ROM then flashed it. Simply replacing the apk from within android didn't work and it wouldn't let me just install it either..

Oh ok, well I used root explorer to replace the apk and it worked just fine. Anyway I do see a difference with the newer apk.

[Q] Dark spots on camera lens. Is it dust or dead pixels?

There is a fairly noticeable dark spot in the middle of my camera view that also appears in the pictures themselves.
When I zoom in/out the dark spot travels and gets bigger when zooming in.
What does this mean? Is it dust inside the lens or something in the image sensor itself?
Attached are a couple images showing the issue.
Is this a solvable issue or do I need to return it? (I got the phone in July 2013)

Front camera low quality/out of focus in the center of frame

Hi,
I noticed that Pixel 4 XL doesnt have equal sharpness in the frontcam pictures. If subject aka me are in the centre of frame (phone in portrait orientation), the photo comes halfway blurred. I mean my beard looks sharp, but in eyes level and above everything is a blurry mess. The hair looks so bad compared to my beard.. If I out stretch my arm, then its not so visible but anything from 30-50 cm shooting distances and you can definetely see that the picture looks weird because of that hair/eye level blurriness. I can fix the blurry eyes by re centering myself to lower of the frame. Its insane but it works always.
I want to know if this is normal software processing (distortion correction) or do I have a bad lens/camera sensor? And please dont remind me that its a fixed focus lens I already know that and i have described the problem which isnt purely focus issue.
E; I attached screenshot from one of my photos, where you can see the problem. (look at hair vs. eyebrown focus and scene wasnt windy!) I wasnt centered in viewfinder, little bit lower than centre of the frame trying to show that non equal sharpness (without sharing myself to whole internet)

Sadly, Pixel 4 FFC doesn't have autofocus. It is fixed focus, to get it in focus you have to move the camera at arms lenght (focus point is around 55cm)
It is a pity but that is how it is. Pixel 3 narrow FFC had autofocus and I got the best selfies that way. Pixel 3 wide FFC was fixed focus.

Google reasoning is:
P4 FFC is wide, so you want to have the back frame and other people focused (not possible with autofocus)
Maybe no space to add a autofocus FFC because of soli?
Because Google and FFC with autofocus will come back with the P5

This really doesn't answer your question of whether your phone has a problem or not... but the image sensor is a flat object, while the lens is a hemisphere. The different parts of the hemisphere are different lengths from the image sensor; IE the center is a different length than any outer edge. The P4 in particular has aggressive perspective correction to cover up this fact and make things (usually) look flat when they should. But it can't correct the different focal lengths that change from center to outer edge. Maybe this is what you're seeing. I don't know a lot about cameras... I could be completely wrong.

Otherwise good opinion, but how every else major flagship doesnt suffer this? iPhone, Oneplus for example (have had both). Can someone test this? For testing, you need to take it outdoors and in bright conditions and take a punch of selfies from center and litle lower of frame and see how it affects to focus. (usually if you have beard its sharper than your eyebrowns and it makes the photo horrible looking when cropped in) I showed to my friend examples who doesnt know anything about smartphone cameras and he was sure that this much be broken, cause it was so baad looking and the in the other it was so good, as expected. (same distance, differennt in frame positioning)
