Can someone break down for me the way way boot screens are partitioned out on the Butterfly S? Are they built into the HBOOT? I just switched from the Amaze 4G to the Butterfly S. I've managed to S-OFF, Root, and flash the Maximus 11 rom, but I'm trying to dig a little deeper. The typical HTC boot screens usually annoy them, so learning how to alter them usually gives me a good bit of understanding and satisfaction.
So I'd like to start a thread on flashing new boot screens for the Butterfly S. Tools, templates,or any knowledge would be appreciated.

Also, it depends on whether you want to just customize the bootanimation or the static image displayed by the bootloader before the actual system starts to boot.
The former is in /system and can be customized easily (IIRC, it's just a series of PNG images in a single ZIP or something like that), you just need write access to /system, so you don't need S-OFF. The latter is usually stored in a partition of its own and in a rather unusual uncompressed format. To flash this, you do need S-OFF and in case you mess it up, you might end up with an overpriced paperweight.

Yeah, I found the bootanimation and was able to replace that easily. Its actually the same procedure I did for my Amaze, I had just completely forgotten it, making me feel lame.
Making it display as I'd like is another story. Finding the right framerates and timings for the zip file's desc.txt along with the proper filesize may take some trial and error unless someone has done that legwork already. One thing I will note is that previous android devices I've had scale the image to the native resolution, filling the screen with the boot animation images whereas the Butterfly S displays the images at their set resolution. It was interesting and annoying to watch my old bootanimation take up only 1/4 of my new phone's screen.
I'd like to try and modify the static bootloader image as well, though I am way of the dangers. I've had to do some squirly stuff before on my HD2 and my Amaze, so I'll still cautiously tackle it. :fingers-crossed:
When I get this going as I'd like I'll post a step by step tutorial. I'll credit everyone for their help. :highfive:

Galaxy S phones don't use bootanmation.zip they use a proprietary format QMG or something.
Thanks for the quick reply.

negative.. Gunnyman stated it perfectly.. I researched for hours trying to figure out how to decode the QMG format into frames.. and met with no success.
I'm digging into QMG tonight. If there are mac tools for editing them I'll work on it.
please do, I would really like the boot animation from jh2 (not the S breaking into pieces and rebuilding, but the blue and purple shine that runs though it a couple of times.
super sexy imo.

I'm sure you could purchase the tools for several thousands of dollars from the proprietor, Quram Soft.
The price isn't even available on their web site, http://quramsoft.com/solution_e/qmage.asp
The name of the QMG format is Qmage, I've been unable to ascertain if our phones use Qmage or Qmage - F.
See Topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=736412 for all the information that we have on boot animations, shut down animations, and sounds.
actually, you can do the bootanimation.zip, one of my co-workers was messing with it today... you probably need to set the permissions on the zip correctly.

i know how you feel my poor phone is only 4 days old. day one 1.2.2a, day two 1.2.3, day 4 1.2.3a lol
I finally successfully recovered my BootLooped Incredible after i incorrectly updated the NV item of my phone. My situation was a little different than most bootloop error because no matter which stock rom or recovery image I flash nothing would stop it from rebooting because the NV items weren't overwritten during the flash. Then I came across a solution for the EVO by cutthroatamft on how he recovered his EVO from the same Mistake but unfortunately all his files were geared toward the EVO. After much searching I accidentally came across a single comment that posted a link for the ENG-HBOOT for the incredible. Now i manage to replace all the EVO specific files with the Dinc equivalent. Below is the link to the files and instructions compile by cutthroatamft but I updated it for the Dinc. Hopefully this helps someone else that has this problem. can't post a live link but I think you can figure it out
update:
Since megaupload is down and Had some people asking for a re-up here's a mediafire link to the file
http://www.mediafire.com/?cu7hu6pu75zvskh
Also as mentioned below by eljean this should work on the SLCD as well it's just your screen will be blank during the process. For those who has this Dinc I found that if the screen is blank wait a few minutes for it to fully boot then test to see if you can execute any ADB command. If you can the just type "adb reboot oem-78" this will reboot it and put it in fastboot mode which will allow you to execute the commands in the document.
update 2:
Nevermind what I said about the ADB... this worked for me on another phone but I realize you'll probably won't get to a point where you can execute the command because your phone in a loop LOL. So I guess getting to fastboot blind folded is your only option

That's a great find and good little zip/guide to get it set up.
The engineering HBOOT can be quite useful for many things besides flashing/erasing certain partitions. The inc community just hasn't used it that much.

Really don't know that info, however if you want to get root but don't want to wait there are other ways to do it. Let me know if you are interested and I will post them up. Consider though it will take longer than it would using the toolkit.
megatronisabeast
I'll try pretty much anything. I've rooted several devices, so findind a new way for another one won't hurt. Only thing that I really would like to do is avoid making a gold card, but if you have to do that I think I will wait for the toolkit. Thanks!! Do you know if it's possible to temp root, flash a kernal with cwm, and then flash a rom?
Here is what you need to do to root your phone, etc.
First thing is to download android sdk:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
It will allow you to send files to your phone from your computer-no s-off so can't flash kernel in recovery only fastboot.
While that is downloading if you haven't already you need to unlock boot loader by going to:
http://htcdev.com/
Don't forget to keep the unlock code so if you need to relock your boot loader.
Next, it sounds like you want to flash a custom rom. If so the best one in my opinion is found here:
http://www.wcxxperia-nce.com/index.php
You have to register to see the vivid section.
Once there you will download the zip file, put a copy on your phone, the other copy unzip and place the boot.img and wcx recovery in the same folder that you have the fast boot file that you downloaded earlier from sdk.
Then you put your phone into hboot mode, plug it in to usb port, make sure on phone screen is says fast boot usb in red.
Then open command prompt in your folder with fast boot by clicking shift and the right mouse button.
Type in these commands:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash recovery wcxrecovery.img
After those steps power down phone, unplug from computer, return to hboot, click on recovery, then flash the zip file that you placed on there earlier.
That's it, you got it root and all.
Also if you do use his rom, restart phone 3 times to settle phone in and cycle battery 3 times to make sure everything is working correctly.

I've never done it myself but it shouldn't be that difficult. I think I'm just spoiled coming from the Inspire - it was rooted, S-OFF'd, and had a few custom ROMs up the within a couple days of its launch. The level of development for that device was extreme from the very beginning.
Sent from my HTC Vivid
True, I still have an Inspire and the development is still booming. I personally just wish HTC would have made the Vivid as dependable as the Inspire, bc my Vivid has all sorts of problems. Turns off randomly, and each time when it turns back on it says "upgrading android" and then it optimizes the apps for ICS. Most of the time it won't flip my pictures(rotate)<--yes auto rotate is on...but all in all HTC went down in quality with the Vivid. Personally this is why I want to root, that way I don't have to worry with HTC screwing up the update.
it does work but i have found that busybox isnt installed/installed correctly and have had to install it from the market for titanium backup to recognize my root.

We need a tool that will convert .jpg or .png or .bmp images to a 540x960 splash.img (I'm sure there's one out there, just haven't looked too much). Once we have that, it will need to be packaged into a PH39IMG.zip and flashed in bootloader. If we had an ENG HBoot we could fastboot flash splash1 splash.img. Either way requires S-Off though (to either get ENG HBoot, which we don't have anyway, or to flash an unsigned PH39IMG.zip)
Here ya go:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1207595
Edit: Ah, damn you megaupload. I'm sure there are other tools out there
And again - won't be able to fastboot flash them, they'll need to be called splash1.img and packed properly into a PH39IMG.zip. Are you S-Off?

Shouldn't be a problem I wouldbt think. You won't be able to fastboot flash to splash1 without an eng hboot..which we don't have. It needs to be packed as a ph39img.zip and flashed through bootloader. I'll throw some together tomorrow and we'll see what happens.

Maybe eng hboot isn't necessary. Maybe the custom hboot that comes with the soff process will allow you to fastboot flash them. I'll post some here in a little for you to try
Since I'm not S-Off, I can't try this. But if you're still running the custom hboot that came with s-off, try this one:
just like you're flashing a boot.img, put custom.img in the same directory where you have fastboot, and the command will be -
Code:
fastboot flash splash1 custom.img
Unless you've changed the name of custom.img for some reason. Let me know

from my experience, the remote not allowed message means you need an ENG Hboot to fastboot flash to this partition, or at least a custom hboot that's been modified to allow this. Try this:
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?5s4a13zsr531nan
Put it on your SD, boot to bootloader, and bootloader should find it like any other ph39img. Vol+ to start the update, then PWR to reboot when it tells you
(Then when it reboots delete it from your SD, or at least rename it, so Bootloader doesn't automatically try to flash it every time you're there)
Edit: after looking around a little, apparently you should be able to fastboot flash splash1 with the JB_HBoot (on other devices at least). Have you switched hboots since gaining s-off, or does your hboot still show the junoptbear hboot?
To your other point, what was the downanimation you flashed? was it just a downanimation.zip you replaced manually, or did it flash through recovery? If it flashed through recovery, what else did it flash?
yeah ill try that let me try fastboot again i had to re flash jbhoot and restore my phone i reinstalled your bootsound/zip and it plated the htc jingle when it first booted after recovery so i think we got some progress man thanks alot this phone forum is extra dead its sad

I'm new to android.I'm quite confused about the whole custom Rom installation process.I managed to unlock bootloader and root my phone.I tried to find guides to let me install custom roms on my device.I have a vague idea about the whole process but whenever I look at a ROM release thread, half the information there is beyond me.I would be happy if someone pointed me in the right direction to a complete guide with noob friendly instructions. Also, I would prefer to stay S-On, can someone help me with the whole s-off regarding custom Rom stuff too?
Thanks.

You don't need s-off to flash most custom roms. Only some GPE version will require s-off.
Flash twrp 2.8.5.0
boot your phone in recovery mode
plug your phone to your pc
place your rom.zip on your phone storage
in twrp select "install"
choose your rom.zip
swipe to flash
Follow instructions from the rom installer (aroma installer)
reboot

Ill be honest. Doing things like this are not meant to be noob friendly.
Take about a week and do lots of reading this way if something goes wrong you will know how to recover.
That's what I'm having trouble with.I cant seem to find any solid reading material for stuff like these. For example, will restoring a nandroid backup really fix problems like bootloops and other errors you may run into while flashing ROMS? Also, how do kernels and ROMs match up? are they independent of each other or do certain ROMs work only when you have a particular kernel installed? will a wrong kernel cause any issues with certain ROMs and I'm seriously scared of bricking my device since the amount you're required to know is quite vast.I used to have an iPhone until the HTC One M7 and I was pretty much an advanced user on the iOS platform.I wouldnt call myself a noob, but I cant call myself an advanced android user either.Atleast not yet.

Wow yeah you need to do alot of reading then. Now while I mean no insult. Being an advanced user for IOS and jumping to android is like going from first grade and then jumping to the 12th.
Yes depending on the device kernels only work with matching roms. Take the m7 you mentioned. You have 4 kind of kernels. AOSP, AOSP-Caf, Sense and CM
Each has to be paired with a matching rom. IF you flash the wrong one then it can cause a bootloop. Never expect a nandroid to be a fix all. While it will fix things alot of the time it is not an end all to fixing a bad flash. Sometimes you will have to flash things with a bootloader from command line. Depending on your OS on your PC there could also be other issues. So at times you may need a linux based live disc or partition.

Your in safe hands with this forum....theres not nuch that cannot be solved if you go wrong, however there are a multitude of good videos on you tube .
I found this guys videos very easy to follow https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKlOmM_eB0nzTNiDFZibSSA
A little out of date now but a good image of what to do,backed up with the knowledge base on this forum its relatively easy!
Once you have a custom recovery make back ups before you do anything,I found buying an OTG cable and USB drive a good way to create lots of back ups ,so if things go wrong you have a good restore point.
Unlikely to brick your device if you keep S-on ,build up your confidence and go S-off when you can...its like xmas everyday once you know how to use the power it brings!
Okay, let me start off simple. My HTC One M7 is on complete stock now.Running Lollipop from HTC.It is an unlocked Hong Kong version.Bootloader unlocked and TWRP recovery flashed.I need a kernel which will enable motion launch gestures as on the one m8 and also functions like sweep2wake etc.Can someone link me to the appropriate kernel to flash?
I know how to flash the kernel, I have trouble choosing the right one.

If you are running stock rom (sense 6) + lollipop and your phone is a M7_UL or M7_U then ElementalX 20.1 should work fine
From one noob to another haha
I really like ViperOne mods, but I haven't used Elements.
alray nailed it -- easiest ROM install.
you need to install TWRP first.
I used the HTC One Toolkit for this, you can find it on XDA. (Sorry new user, I can't post links)
I assume your phone is still unlocked. -- if not, unlock it
Have Debug mode Enabled on your phone. (Settings -> About -> Software information -> More -> Click Build number 10 times)
Settings -> Developer options -> USB Debugging -> Checked
Using HTC One Toolkit, click ADB -> Devices
this will start adb. you might wait a second or 5 for your device to be shown.
Then click the Pull down reboot menu select bootloader, then click Reboot.
-the phone should reboot into the Bootloader.
Select Fastboot, press power button.
Then in HTC One Toolkit, close the adb window and click Fastboot.
Click Devices
-Your device should show in the main HTC One Toolkit window.
Once you see that, Under Label Flash, press ... button and select the TWRP you just downloaded. Then select Partition Recovery, then Flash.
Once complete and successful, reboot the phone into Recovery from the phone's menu.
!! NOTE !! You must reboot into Recovery before starting the ROM. Or it may re-write the Recovery.
Once in Recovery, reboot the phone from within Recovery and let it start normally.
Copy your rom (in .zip format) onto your phone. I make new folder called roms or mods on my phones so I don't lose track of where things are.
Once your Rom is copied to your phone (I suggest ViperOne 8.0.0.0), use ADB again and reboot the phone into recovery.
From TWRP Touch Install
navigate to your folder where your ROM is (zip file)
Click it and install.
I wipe all settings when I install a new ROM.
Good luck!

And I would highly recommend not using any toolkits but instead take an extra 30 mins to learn how to use adb and fastboot properly so if something bad happens you know how to deal with it.
Most noobs are totally stuck if something is not working as expected when using a toolkit. Wen you took the time learning adb and fastboot you'll know how to deal with most issues when flashing roms/recovery/ruu/frimware/kernel/radio and more. When you did not took any time to learn adb and fastboot and using a toolkit instead, when something unexpected happen, you'll just be stuck there because your little toolkit doesn't have any "I'm screwed, what should I do?" button.

I have nothing against using using tools, so long as they're trusted.
Nor is there anything wrong doing it by hand, if not more beneficial.
All in one tools bypass a lot of the understanding.
Alray's first post was right to the point, basic, and a perfect example.

I do know how to use adb and command line to do all that.Intact I did not know that there was a toolkit to do this before I read that post
I do have some experience with the HTC wildfire and sensation XL.But they were considerably older devices which I used a long time ago as temporary ones.
The HTC One is my first non iOS device.
