[Solved] Touchless control not talking to me - Moto X Q&A

So I updated to 4.4.2 and touchless won't talk now for the things it should say...like what time is it.
I cleared data and cache for it...checked text to speech settings...everything is as it should be. Other apps will talk, like my alarm app.
This happened before on 4.2.2.....but I can't remember how I fixed it. LOL
Anyone have any ideas?
Going to try an uninstall and reinstall.
Thanks for any input!

Settings >language & input>voice search >speech output?

Its setup....still nothing. Touchless just opens a search. Won't talk. I did something before to fix it...but can't remember.
Clearing data and cache didn't help. Uninstall was a bad idea...had troubles getting it to hear me again.
Restored a nandroid from friday...from right after upgrade...and still nothing.

Phone didn't know where I was ...so time and weather stuff just gave me a search.
Once it knew where I was....everything worked again.
Makes sense.

Touchless Controls

I am on the AT&T Variant of the Moto X and was wondering if anyone was having issue with Touchless Controls not working. It has been working fine since day one and I noticed today that it wouldn't work. I rooted using the Moto Root and then PwnMyMoto. When I boot, the option to use them is turned off and when I enable it I get no response from saying the keyword. If I try to retrain it, It will not respond to the "Okay Google Now" Attempts. I've verified that the mic is working fine and I've tried several different noise levels.
If anyone has a solution or suggestion, let me know to possible help people who have this issue

I'm having the exact same issues on my Verizon Moto X. I'm hoping you found a fix for yours or that someone can chime in
Tried a factory reset?

[Q] Moto Voice won't work on 2014 Moto X Verizon

I keep trying to use this app, but it constantly quits or stops responding on Moto X 2014!
I’ve even had verizon replace the phone!
After a factory reset, it tends to work for maybe a few hours, to a day, but then eventually stops working again. Even with no other apps installed on the phone besides the stock apps!
any ideas?

Odd you are having that problem. I am having a problem where its too sensitive. It picks up when i dont even say my phrase but someone else, even someone on TV, might say something similar and it comes alive. Thats pretty annoying.

You may want to try enabling Audio History, which will better train the feature through repeated use of voice commands.
It's in Settings> Language & Input> Voice Search.
Update to Initial
I've isolated the problem to contacts. If i sync my google contacts with the device, moto voice will constantly crash and eat battery / CPU. as soon as i delete the google account and re-sync without contacts, it works. any clue what the issue here might be?

I am having the exact same issue with a Moto X 2014 from AT&T. This is actually my second one. They both had the same problem. The Moto Voice recognition would stop working. I tried going into the Moto app. Three of the options work ( Assist, etc.) but the Voice option would regularly freeze up and not go into the options screen. Clearly some sort of bug, I will have to try disable the google contacts sync and see if that helps. If Motorola doesn't come up with a fix ASAP, I'm going to choose a different phone that isn't bug-ridden in it's most advertised feature!
Curious, did you keep back up and restore checked when you signed into your google account? Try removing your google account, when you sign back in, uncheck the first option to back up and restore phone settings. I'm wondering if a phone setting from a previous phone is causing the issue.
I can't speak for the OP, but in my case it's not caused by a previous phone setting as this is my first Android. iPhone before that.
For the OP: seeing as you've narrowed it down to the contacts causing the problem: perhaps exporting all your contacts, deleting them all than importing them back in might either fix it or provide some insight.
additional troubleshooting idea: create a new Google account and see if the problem reoccurs

Moto Voice Issues Solved
After reading several posts on various forums it seems that everyone that was having issues with Moto Voice was coming from another phone OS (mostly iphone, but blackberry too) and had imported contacts from their old phone.
I removed my google account from the Moto X, deleted all the imported contacts from google contacts, then added my google account back on the phone. Now everything works great, but I have to manually add all my contacts at google.com/contacts or on my phone. Perhaps there is another importation method that would work, but it's a shame that Motorola has such a significant bug that will discourage people from switching from other OS's.

Screen off - Ok Google OR Moto Voice ?

Hi all
I am running lollipop and was wondering if I should use the moto custom voice to wake device with screen off, or use the one built into lollipop in Google now.
Is one better than the other ?
Besides being able to use a custom phrase on moto voice ?
I remember reading somewhere that the Google works better cuz its direct.
Any feedback would be much appreciated
Thanks and have a great weekend

Try them both, pick which one you like better.
Google Now can't wake your device unless it is charging.
Only Moto voice will work with the screen off of its not charging.

That's not correct. Lollipop has it built into the OS. Check under google now / settings and voice (voice detection). It's there. Screen off as well. And I think it works better than the moto x one after testing.
I'm well aware of it supposedly being built into lollipop. But it doesn't work with the screen off on the moto X unless its being charged. I've disabled moto voice, enabled google now voice detection from any screen and turned the screen off. Said "OK Google" nothing happens. There have been a few of us here that have tried it and it doesn't work. It does work, though, when it's being charged. If you're able to get it to work please let us know how you did it because I would rather use Google now.
My Google settings on CM 12. Does not work unless plugged in for me.
Haha my bad. I also have a nexus 6 so when I went to my moto X I assumed that it was the same. And I guess I tested it with the screen on. And alas, upon trying it, you are right. It doesn't work when the screen is off. Oops
This thread is close to the question I was researching but my question is more generic. I just got my new MotoX a couple days ago and I'm confused, what is the difference between Google Now or the Moto Voice apps? My old phone was a MotoX 2013 so I'm used to using Google Now for everything, now my new X seems to have two apps that do the same thing? What's the deal?

Moto Voice can wake up your phone, which Google Now cannot. Moto Voice can read your your new notifications (either on command, or during a set period of time), Google Now cannot. Most other voice commands are heard by Moto Voice, and then passed over to Google Now. The two don't really overlap in their abilities. They work together to give you the best of both worlds.

Moto Voice Not Working Properly

Recently I've noticed that my Moto Voice isn't working like it should.
For example, it'll only allow me to ask it one question, then any following questions and it'll ignore them with a sound as if it has rejected my voice.
I've already reset my phone to factory settings before anyone asks but it's not made a difference.
Even if I ask if what the weathers like, it'll say half of the first word then go silent but still display the right info on the screen.
Anyone else getting this?
I'm not rooted and am running on Marshmallow if it helps.
I've tried retraining my voice and cleared the cache of the Moto app but no luck.

How did you get Moto Voice to work, I can't get it to work with Moto App

Weird behavior after using Moto Voice

Greetings everyone,
I originally posted this on the Lenovo official forums but haven't receive any feedback. I was wondering if anyone else had encountered this issue. After a fresh (re)boot, my phone will work as expected using the standard speaker for calls in and out. However, after using Moto Voice once or twice to make calls out all incoming and outgoing calls start with speakerphone no matter what I do. I've confirmed this behavior in safe mode - it's only after using Moto Voice. Google Assistant can be used and not trigger the issue.
Has anyone else had this happen?
Maybe clear data and cache and see if that helps? I'm not really familiar with Moto Voice but have you considered Google Assistant? I just assumed Moto Voice(and similar apps like Samsung Bixby) are just OEM's trying to harvest the data for their own use rather than giving it to Google.

I did a clear cache and data on all Moto apps, still persisted. As mentioned, Google Assistant works fine without triggering the issue but I'd still like to confirm if this is a Moto bug or something else interfering.
