Normally a phone doesn't outwit me like this one or maybe it's because I've been spoiled by using all the great tools here to fiddle fart with my phone and make it uber user friendly...
Anyway, I'm in an area in which the AT&T 3G speed just isn't strong enough to keep a connection so it's constantly switching from H+ or 3G to Edge. Of course when it flip flops I have no service so I drop calls or can't make a call.
I have searched high and low on this phone, Google and on these threads for some way to disable the 3G without success. I found a code for a hidden menu for another LG phone and when I used it there was nothing there allowing me to change it.
Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
ETA: I don't know if it makes any difference or not, but this phone is unlocked.
As far as I know the current prerelease of the CM7 will let you switch to a 2G network (EDGE) on the thrill. As far as switching from HSPA+ to 3G, you cannot do it. HSPA+ is a 3G technology so it’s all or nothing. I’d like to see the ability to switch from HSPA+ to 2G in the Thriller ROM, but as of now it’s all data or nothing. If you are running a stock (unrooted and unmoded) thrill you are only getting 3G anyway, however like anything else this too can be bypassed. if you load the Thriller ROM you will automatically get your HSDPA category set to 10 (ATT default is 9). If you want even faster data speeds you can go to the market and download SQLite. open the app let it compile your Databases. Scroll down the menu select "Settings storage" then "settings.db", select "system" and scroll near the bottom you will see a table entry called "hsdpa_category. With stock ROM this value will be 9, with Thriller it will be 10.
you can modify your hsdpa category to a value of 28, but I believe ATT can only support up to a category value if 14 which is what I have mine set to, data speeds are awesome!
Please correct me if any parts of this post were incorrect, thanks.
P.S. you cannot access this table with the stock ROM ir with the CM7. i have only been able to do this with Thriller installed.
Can somebody be so kind and upload stock buid.prop for Bell AHD?
Wanna see differences between the AT&T and Bell setup - looking for way to enable network type switch in phone info
Thanks
here you go!
please extract it to get the build.prop for a bell AHD
Well, I tried replacing build.prop in hope that will enable band switch but it did not
I would really like to have option enabled in settings or trough phone info.
In phone info i can switch between LTE/GSM/WCDMA and LTE/CDMA/EvDO/GSM/WCDMA.
Any other choice reverts back to LTE/GSM/WCDMA. I have done EB40 battery mod and I am not worried about battery life as I can pull out 2.5 days on medium usage but 70% of my day I do not need LTE so I was hoping to extend battery life even more by switching to EDGE

Try that app and see if it works for u... o used it on my atrix 2

I dont know what ATT did...
I followed instructions from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1386383 and I got network switch enabled in settings but when I select GSM only setting does not stick...Reverts back to LTE.
I tried adding ATT 3g APN (wap.cingular) but it wont connect to the data network at all???
Really stuck now.
Generaly I always used 2g data connection when I am at work as I still can get my emails and mms and do some basic browsing and internet radio streaming. Then if I stream videos or download apps or upload large amount of pics I would switch to 3g (LTE in this case)
I wonder does it have anything to do with account provisoning for LTE???
I really would like to have that option enabled and working. I know ATT is in the process of phasing out 2G data on account of LTE but as long as it is available I would like to use it...
After completing the steps in that post and deleting the backups change the operator to maritime. Successfully dropped down to 2G /EDGE. Thanks for this thread. Was hoping someone would post a bit of information on it. Here's some screenshots.

Great - I did it too, bad thing it does not stick after reboot - reverts to auto select network but its better than before
I wonder what the heck is Maritime in network selection...
Anyhow will look more into keeping manual network selection after reboot.

Would have never have guessed to search for networks and select Maritime. Thanks for the tips guys. I can now force 2g at work.

Maritime is another AT&T network. It was actually the default on my Atrix 4G. Sadly, the Atrix HD doesn't display the code for each maritime network. Shouldn't be to hard to switch the default to it if we knew which code it was. Setting the default to Maritime wouldn't help considering there's 3.

Very interesting. If set to 3G only on Maritime it displays the 4G without LTE. Through Phone Info, it shows that I'm connected through HSPA as well. Selecting Automatic sticks with HSPA unless I get better LTE service. Seems like 3G is a good balance between speed and battery life.

Is there any proof that disabling LTE saves battery life? In older phones, disabling 3G would save battery life because there were separate chip-sets for 2G and 3G services. That isn't the case now, a single chipset handles all signaling. Thus, there are no chips that are powered down when 4G is disabled. I would expect battery savings to be minimal.
Additionally, because of the increase efficiency of the LTE network (combined with less network loading), your phone will have an open data connection for a much shorter time, when transmitting data.
I've got my AHD on the AT&T network using a StraightTalk AT&T sim. $45.00 unlimited everything. With the APN that straight talk uses, it never searches for LTE. Just on 4g all day long, with no LTE searching at all.

Guys you need this app

No need to edit build.prop or root.

Well, I'm going on 4 hours of screen on time, 13 hours of listening to music, etc and still holding 62%. That's from jumping between 2G and 3G on an as needed basis.
--edit--
Seems the jellybean leak comes with this already done? Able to switch to just about everything. Getting HSPAP instead of HASPS a well.

Hi guys. I have an S3 4g (i9305T) bought unlocked here in Australia and it used to display "DC" in stock form whenever it was downloading data - play store, browser etc. Was also quite fast considering the 3G virgin sim card I'm using. I have since flashed a few ROMs, settling on SlimKat 4.4.2 for the time being (battery drain using pacman was crazy!) Now, the phone is working perfectly and I don't really want to change but I've lost my dual carrier (DC) data connection, having to settle for the much slower 3G, H+ type of connection.
Any suggestions much appreciated guys!
I've been trying out GamerzRom and I have to say it's fantastic for my i9000. Great performance and battery, probably the best I've seen.
Now, in order to save battery when using 3G I manually disable HSPA in the Service Mode menu. This forces the phone to connect only to 3G, which is slower than HSPA (but noticeably faster than 2G) and drains far less battery. This menu is accessed by entering *#*#301279#*#* in the dialer. I've managed to do this in CyanogenMod 10 and 11, and in CyanAOSP, but not with GamerzRom. I haven't been lucky in getting the developer to reply to this question, which is why I'm posting it here.
From what little I could find, it seems like the developer deleted the service mode because it was a RAM hog, but I was wondering if there was another way to access it or disable HSPA (but not 3G) in another way.
I have the G920T unlocked and rooted on Android 5.1.1 - Battery life since getting the latest update and rooting has been awesome.
I have also seen a huge improvement in data speeds - I am on the ATT Network - TMOBILE in my area was very very poor for me anyway - I can't even get phone calls inside my home and at work - on TMOBILE -(without WIFI Calling) and data sppeds on LTE was very slow - that is why I moved to ATT. (In my mind there is somehting inherrently wrong when phone call service can only be accomplished when you connect to a wifi nework. I personally think that is why TMOBILE started WiFi callling - to make up for poor signal issues....anyway
Data Speeds for me have always been good on aTT - but Friday on my way to work, I did a few spot checks and was amazed to be getting betweeen 36MB and 48MB Download speeds and 18MB to 24MB upload speeds on ATT LTE. COnsistently -
This is much higher than I have ever had before - normally, I used to get 15MB to 20MB download speeds - respectable but now it is nearly double.
In my house, I used to get up to 10-12MB download - but when I checked this morning it was RUNNING closer to 25.
Bottom line to all this - I am curious if any one else has noticed a significant increase in data speeds - on either TMOBILE or ATT ? Is it possible that the new Modem with 5.1.1 could have caused this kind of improvement in data speeds or is it more likely network related?
On T-Mobile getting 75mb down & 30 up. Love T-Mobile, keep AT&T.

Another thing I've noticed is they finally fixed the force close us edge users use to get for some themes when we would try to access the edge settings....
