Here you will find the most recent guide with working links. The process is quick and easy and the only part that may cause some trouble is either if they have to make a gold card or don't have a working Sim card and need to bypass lock screen
Both of which is actually fairly easy to do if need be though. So as long as you have a micro SD card and a working Sim card the whole process should take 10 min if you don't it maybe a little longer but there are still a few people here that will help.
Just read and reread until you understand the process and if you get confused feel free to ask, best of luck!

thnx for the lnk it looks well made and all but it still wont work..wen i reach the step where i have to install the "update.zip" file it fails...i followed those instructions to the letter..im begining to wonder if anyone has ever truly updated this phone to froyo

Well there's no need for that, so you are currently running android 1.0?
Is so, download amonra recovery and place it on root of sd card (not in any folder, and name it recovery.img (not recovery.img.img)
then download telnet from the market
Put it on home screen
Open keyboard
Hit enter key twice
Then type
telnetd
Now close keyboard and open telnet
Type
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
Exactly like above, if successful you will see ##
Now boot to new recovery and finish the process
Let me know if you get stuck
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

ok wen i open telnet how am i suposed to type? all this stuff is just gettin more and more confusing :/

Just with the keyboard is fine

Cannot upgrade rooted magic 32a...no way, no how!

I have been trying to upgrade my htc magic 32a from 1.5 ever since I got it 10 months ago...but no success. One of the reasons I learned in my inquiry is that it is not possible to upgrade a "perfected spl" which is what I have. However, I have found several bloggers who claimed to have done so using ROM Manager, flashrec.apk, ADB, etc. But when I try any of the suggested methods, I eventually reach a failure message (can't be installed on this phone, force stop, etc) of some kind.
So here are my questions:
Was the blogger correct about the "perfected spl"? If I knew that for certain, then I would dismiss the claims of success as bogus, give up the ghost on this phone, and start looking for an upgradeable replacement!
If the answer to the above is no...meaning there is a procedure for upgrading my phone, then I would be forever indebted if someone can point out the way!
Desperate in Buenos Aires,
Laurie
if you use flashrec.apk, you have to enable the option to install application out of market.
Perfected SPL issue
Although I appreciate your input, if you'll read my post, you'll see that I have tried flashrec.apk and I did it correctly allowing non-market applications.
"...ROM Manager, flashrec.apk, ADB, etc. But when I try any of the suggested methods, I eventually reach a failure message (can't be installed on this phone, force stop, etc) of some kind.
My question which I will repeat more clearly is this:
Is it possible to upgrade an HTC Magic 32A with a PERFECTED SPL...and if so, how do I do it?
Laurie
I can tell you I HAVE read posts of people upgrading these phones. even changing the radio and spl on almost bricked ones.
My question to help you from here is :
Do you have a mytouch 1.2 (fender)
If so it says 32A but it is really a 32B board.
I have the fender and I used clockwork recovery, superwipe, and then ezTerry radio and spl update zips.
I suppose I should ask: upgrade 1.5 what?
If you just mean android 1.5
I used clockwork recovery and then put cyanogen 5 on. Easily
I have since put cm6 on and even cm7
All in all. Keep reading I read for days and days, but... Putting a rom on already rooted phone was easy. And very possible
Sent from my Dream/Sapphire using XDA App
Yes: I would like to upgrade from Android 1.5 to whatever!
No: I don't even know what a mytouch 1.2 fender is! When I boot up, the Airtel logo appears followed by "HTC Magic." There's a T-Mobile logo printed on the case above the screen and "With Google" on the back. Here's what it says I have in about phone:
Sapphire PVT (32A) Ship S-On H
Hboot-1.76.0009 (SAPP10000)
CPLD-12 (Dec 8, 2009)
Radio: 6.35.08.29
Type: EB11/32A
I cannot or do not know how to use clockwork recovery. In fact, I am not able to boot into recovery...only HBoot which has no options other than to reset or power down.
I have tried to download and install ROM Manager from Market but get an error saying that there is no such apk. When I try to install from the SD card, I am told that the apk is not for this phone. I have also tried to install it from AppBrain Market but repeatedly get an internet error "Please check your connection and try again." My connection is fine and I'm able to download and install a variety of apks...but none that help me change the rom. I am rooted by the way.
Any ideas?
Laurie
Fender means that it has an audio jack.
Have you read the Cyanogenmod wiki quide? First you need to have root access and an unlocked bootloader (hboot). Only after that you can start installing custom ROMs
Looks like you have the same phone as I do, so you should use this guide: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Magic_%2832A%29:_Rooting_%286.35.x_radio%29
It's old but works. After that you can go forward on installing a ROM you like. Also you always have to remember to have correct radio/SPL versions (you'll learn about them with the guide) before installing software. Otherwise it won't boot.
This is what my phone looks like ATM:

Your phone is pure 32A Magic, not fender or mt4g v1.2
Well then, I don't have an audio jack so my HTC Magic is not a Fender. And I have read...but not followed the Cyanogen Wiki because it specified the "HTC Magic (32A) with 3.22.x radio" while my radio is 6.35.08.29.
I did install ADB on my computer and I created a Gold Card both as per the Wiki instructions. However, I gave up on that method after repeatedly getting a "device not recognized" error.
I do have root access but not a clue as to whether hboot is locked or not. How would I determine that?
Sorry I'm being such a dimwit but I am soooooo frustrated with this phone. Maybe I should either just leave well enough (Android 1.5) alone...or find someone who has a clue to replace the guts of the device with a more adaptable OS.
Thanks for trying,
Laurie
No recovery & fastboot fails to install
I just attempted to follow the instructions from http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Howto:_Install_the_Android_SDK once again to install the SDK and fastboot on Windows 7 but the installation of fastboot failed. See screenshot attached.
In addition, I seem to have no recovery at all on the device. Booting from Home/Power brings up the Airtel screen where it remains until I remove the battery. Booting from Vol-Down/Power produces Fastboot which offers 4 options as follows:
<Vol Down> HBoot Mode
<Send> Reset Device
<Action> Restart to HBoot
<Menu> Power Down
Choosing <Vol Down> gives me:
<Back> Fastboot Mode
<Send> Simlock
Both <Send> and <Action> restart the device and of course, <Menu> turns it off.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I suspect that I cannot proceed with changing the radio or the spl without Fastboot on my computer...and I should not try to proceed without Recovery on the device. So what do I do?
You need to run the installer as admin, and it's safest to run everything as admin since it's the easiest way
The recovery you have is the stock recovery so it won't show anything useful.
I followed this guide: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Magic_(32A):_Rooting_(6.35.x_radio) and it worked perfectly!
I did run the SDK installer as Admin and after a bit of manipulating managed to get fastboot where it is supposed to be. Then I attempted to follow the guide you suggested. However, when I try to "push adb"...I get a "permission denied" message and can go no farther.
So does having the "stock recovery" mean that I cannot enter recovery mode? Hanging up on the Airtel screen is to be expected? Then I truly don't understand. How do I back up my current ROM? And if things go wrong...which they can't because I cannot adb push anything to my SD card...then how do I recover?
I honestly appreciate your help...but I seem to have the device from hell and every time I hear how "easy" it is to do what I have not been able to do in a year, I want to tear my hair out!!!!

Please try to follow the 6.35 instructions
Did you use a goldcard? Check the wiki for that too
You can probably try temproot and then backup with that - but SMS and some other stuff can probaby be backed up in some other ways. If you can't push anything to the sdcard, have you enabled USB debugging from the settings? You can also try to enable USB storage from the usb menu that appears when you connect your phone to your computer and put the files there that way. I can't really remember how I did it since it was such a long time ago :/
Don't worry, it's hard but not impossible!
Yes...I have tried to follow those instruction as well as versions thereof listed below.
And yes...I have created a Gold Card as well as installed SDK, Eclipse, etc...but all to no avail.
When I read "Hey look. I just upgraded my HTC Magic (with the same credentials by the way) to Froyo...in only 10 minutes!" I must come to the conclusion that I am the problem in the sense that there is something that I am not getting. Consequently, my question is this:
Does anyone know of a technical service where I can send my device to have it upgraded professionally?
If it is in the general vicinity of Denver (CO)...that would be cool but at this point I'm willing to mail it. PLEASE HELP! The phone works just fine...but it is sooooooooo limited by Cupcake!

Try Spanish posts
Hmmm.... the science of the magic is a little hard to some few...
Have you tried Spanish tutorials?
There's also an Spanish page (h ttp:/ /htcmania .com) that can help you, because the Magic was first released in Spain
(if you are going for the spanish forums be careful! those use 32b motherboards)
BTW, if you want to upgrade, remember something, you must download 1= the recovery and 2= roms
To install them, you need to use a terminal emulator and all that.... (the forums w/download links also have an installation guide)
I wish you look n.n
and if you need help on how to install or root something... contact me (Y)
Yes...I need help!
Hola Cesar,
Thanks for your suggestions. Since I have the 32A motherboard, I don't want to risk bricking my phone by doing anything meant for the 32B. But I can surely use your help with the following which by the way, I have already tried:
Finding and installing the correct Recovery & ROM. I have been referred to a variety of each but haven't been successful at installing any as you can see from my list...even when following the respective installation guides.
Currently, I'm running a rooted phone with a perfected SPL with no recovery. No problems so far but I would love to upgrade to Froyo if that is possible. Another by the way: I just spoke to an Android specialist at Cricket who said he could do it...but didn't understand why I would want to since I'm not having problems with the phone - if it ain't broke, why fix it?
Laurie
Try to root by SuperOneClick. Even shell root will help in future
If not, i will write more hard manual
I am rooted
Thanks for the suggestion Strogino but I already have root. My problem is not being able to upgrade from Android 1.5.
Laurie
Sup?
Laurie, The magic of the Magic is a pain!
Let's do this:
Turn of your phone and turn it on by presing back + power
That's the bootloader screen, then tell me what says there
second: Download any root app (like root explorer) and tell me if you can acces the root of your sd (something like / or try to go to /system/data and see if you can COPY an app to the SD). BTW, how did you rooted your phone?
for now, you must decide wich ROM you will use, tell me that and give me the link of the rom (if you want a reco' look for Ginger Yoshi)
That's all for now, do your homework an tell me that ^
Glad to help you!

I have Root Explorer installed and am able to access the SD Card although there's no /system/data folder. I went to system/app instead but can't figure out how to COPY any of the apps listed to the SD Card.
As for the ROM, I don't have a clue which will work on my device. I do have Ginger Yoshi on my PC. What's next?

[Q] HTC DReam

hi all here info on my Dream
Model Number HTC_Dream, Firmware 1.1, Baseband version 62.415.20.13u_2.22.16.19, Kernal version [email protected]#12, Build number 1.56.621.4 Plat-1.0_gms-141395 CL#19091 release-keys
ok have spent 6 days trying to upgrade???? ha first find and use androot success rooted superuser for android 2.0~2.2, then put DREAIMG.nbh to root of sd card aok then boot using cam+power starts runs through prog then says Model ID incorrect??. I have tried other method to many to mention even tried Rom Manager apk from version 2.0.1.7. through to 4.3.2.4. and not one will load keeps saying SORRY the application rom manager (process com koushikdutta.rommanager) has stopped unexpectedly please try again ha?? have also tried to download through android market ha? cant find it try direct through google search log in find rom manager download cant says There are no Android phones associated with this account. Please sign in with a different account. Google has my android number registered that way I receive emails on my phone????? so is there ANYONE OUT THERE WHO CAN HELP OR SHOULD I JUST BRICK IT AND BUY A SAMSUNG
well if you were able to gert superuser on your phone then you were rooted. the reason for the dreaming.nbh file to error out is probably its the wrong file or a bad download, just need to redownload it (maybe from a different site) you wont be able to download rom manager to a none rooted phone.
hold the camera button when powering on and write down that info here - if your sd card is in say no to the update and just write the rest starts with something like pvt 32b.......
HTC Dream
thanks heres the info

then I get MODEL ID Incorrect
Update FAIL!
any suggestions for a better site to download from
sure check this out
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Dream:_Rooting
everything you need will be here, follow the steps, use these files, and youll be done in 20min or so! good luck!
Hi well it didn't work I even tried to BRICK IT and that didn't work either?
could it have something to do with MOVISTAR when you start it up thats the first screen you see before the Android screen???? any more suggestions greatly appreciated
huh, not sure what you mean by "I even tried to BRICK IT and that didn't work either?"
but besides the point you are saying before the android boot screen the splash screen reads "MOVISTAR" ? ive only seen rogers, g1, and htc splash screens.
im not too sure why that would matter other than you may need a diffrent dreaming.nbh file for your radio/spl does appear to be different than i remember.
what country id your g1 programed to work in? you may need some different files
That must mean you have the HTC Dream from spain, as seen here: http://www.xataka.com/moviles/htc-dream-en-espana-con-movistar
You may also need to make a goldcard and then you'll be able to flash any dream nbh
update
thanks all
have gold card dident work the only thing that has nearly worked is getting recovery flasher on to the phone now onto the next stage ill let you know???
Goldcard should work....
Hmm...
Anyways one more thing
You probably should do 1.5/1.6 in androot not 2.1/2.2

i doubt it was already rooted, it had android 1.5 os. today i was trying to flash it with laslo 5.2... i was following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098899 step by step .
but after i completed Step 1. Get to 1.5 stock and flash recovery!
' no 2 step correctly ,i wiped the data & applied the update after that during the reboot my g1 got stuck after showing the T-Mobile G1 logo followed by Android logo & then dark screen.
after that i am not being able to fastboot (camera+power) ,recovery (home+power) or anything else. tried removing the battery & SD card but its still the same, when i plug the USB cable it shows red LED .. there's nothing else. can anyone please tell me how can i fix this ? its been only 2 days since i bought it. any kind of help will be appreciated . thank you
If holding power + back, power + home, or power + camera only gets you the g1 screen then either your hardware buttons are bad or you have a brick. Only jtag will fix this, too bad because those dev phones are kinda rare

thanks for your reply bro...its hard to find a JTAG in Kolkata(india)... btw can you tell why dev phones are like this ? i mean are they very hard to be used with custom roms ?... i bought this phone from ebay just 2 days ago...
They're actualy easier to flash roms because they are prerooted. If your in india I remember seeing a thread somewhere in the g1 section recently mentioning a place that does jtag, don't know how close it is to you but if you find the thread it might be

Dev phones are special phones that are - like in the title - for developers. The special thing about these are that they are pre-rooted and are sim-free. So If you want to simlock free your device, just root and flash this over your phone, it will sim-free itself.
Also what's awesome about them, that they have such an awesome battery cover!
Also,
yes . i've already red that thread ... but its in Mumbai...n i m in kolkata..thats a long distance , btw i've recently checked that my phone can be switched to blue led mode, hope the JTAG is only option.. thanks for your concern guys...

Well, that depends. Are you trying the way by pressing those 4 corners or by flashing those .nbh files? If you are not on a data-plan (3g) try to borrow one of those sim-cards from your friends. You may explain your problem more. And what version of android you are on? Or are yu rooted?

search for bypass android lock screen on google or xda, you will need a computer and understand adb to do this. its not too hard but involes a little know how
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
i do that before but now is not working can that be a prob of the hardwar
well first off after root make sure you install a custom rom that allows you to not sign into google, most roms since donut allow you to skip this. anyway what isnt working, what you need to do is force wifi on via adb and you then can log in and start the rom. what exactly did you do that didnt work. (the touch of four corners only works with some versions of android)

i install the adb and the drivers but the pc dont reconize my phone like adb so what i did i force it so he reconixe it but it said like it don t have certificate
and when i write adb devices my pc don t show the numbers
i have other phone android but when i connect it with the pc the pc reconie it so i didn t understund
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719
here is one of many guides that may help, my guess id that your computer isnt pointed to the right drivers or the path you set is wrong. you either need to change the environmental variables or change the directory to the correct location, as in open cmd where the adb.exe is located
thank you i will try this and i will answer you
i didn t get any thing its not working i don t know why
can you get into your phone at all or are you stuck at sign in screen. i think you said you were. chances are you dont have android debugging turned on on your phone. this requires a few more steps, not at a computer now but ill send you link how to do this. if you search the xda threads youll find your answer but if you cant i link you when im near a comp

probably won't have time for that, maybe some other nice feller here would be. but as for now your best bet is to root and put a custom rom on it so it will let you bypass inital setups, or you could borrow a friends tmobile sim and just go through the setup and never reset it.
if you choose the rooting setup you need to start by finding out what your running, power on while holding camera and write down everything on that screen

if not then your best option is to follow the cyanogen wiki (google it) in the link on the dream there will be instructions to root and instructions to bypass using adb, feel free to ask if you get stuck

i have tryed using the cyanogenmod wiki rooting methhood befor. i got to the android sdk part and whenever i did what the wiki asked didnt work. did everything it asked for.
well what part is that? to root you do not need the sdk. if you are trying to bypass the startup screen then you will. you will need adb.exe from platform-tools in the sdk and the proper drivers. possibly you will also need to update java

The Specifications are:
Dream PVT 32B Ship S-on
Hboot-1.33.0013d (Drea11000)
CPLD-4
Radio-2.22.27.08
and the big problem is that i can´t install a Custom rom, every Rom is stocking or i get a bootloop.
What is wrong with my phone, i hope you can help me and sorry for my bad english
what recovery do you have? have you ever used cmtd? which roms have you tried to flash? have any ever worked? do you do full wipes between flashes? superwipes? have you checked to see if md5sums match?

You've got a 2708 radio, so you have to either (a) flash a ROM that states it is compatible, or (b) flash a 2708 kernel after flashing the ROM of your choice.
