Rooting help--Bell c6906 (.534) - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone, sorry if this is redundant at all; I've searched some but haven't found a clear answer to my question.
I just picked up a z1 c6906 that is unlocked from Negri. It looks like the phone was a Bell (Canada) device from the bloatware. I've refused the OTA to .290 with plans to root, and am currently on 14.1.G.1.534
I've read through the rooting guide (thanks NUT), and it looks like .534 is the version that would need to be downgraded to in order to root. As I'm on a .534, would I simply use flashtool to flash a generic version of .534, root it, and then update?
Sorry if this is obvious, I'm used to Nexus devices and don't want to brick this thing. Any help is much appreciated!

Actually you are in a good point, Root now the .534, then update via Flashtool to .290 using NUT method and then again with the same method update to .136 and you are done. Latest FW Rooted.

OK, thanks! I just wasn't sure if I needed to switch to generic firmware first, but that shouldn't make a difference I take it?

No, it won't.

Great, thanks again. Do you have any input in which root method to use? I like that bin4ry's is open and I can read it, but would that work on the c6906 variant?

Bin4ry is the safest way and recommended to Root .534 firmwares. Yes, if you follow the instruction all will work fine.

Awesome, just used bin4ry and it worked like a charm. I hadn't been sure because it says that c6903 is supported but doesn't mention other variants. Thanks again for your help!
Just curious, if I were to use something like OTA Rootkeeper, could I just use that to temp unroot and reroot taking the OTA's? Or is that a no-no and I need to flash the modified firmwares if I want to update from .534? Thanks again for all of your help.

Not sure about that but I am sure you can keep root updating via OTA to 257, but then you have to update again to 290 and you can get complications. I saw people doing this process and ending to have a Partial Root. So I think the safest and quick way is just to update directly to .290 with the firmwares from NUT. Same for .136. They are meant to do they job for this purpose.

Ok sounds good, thanks.

If you have read the numerous threads before updating, you'll find out that the old methods no longer work as Sony closed the root exploit in the new update.
The "longer" way of rooting the 257 firmware can be found here:

This thread is super old... Only .534 can be rooted, then you can OTA update to .257

Downgrade to .534, root and then upgrade OTA.
Download the file here: https://mega.co.nz/#!K1QD1bSK!JkgNvz3Tqb6lq4brVUEyZGraOjMQuTuzn8IaEFhQhUI (ftf file for .534 firmware)
Use flashtool to downgrade it ( untick wipe data/cache/appslogs )
Then root it with vroot or something else.
Then it will prompt you to download .257, doing do it OTA not through your PC

It will tell you to update to 290.
However, if your bootloader is unlock-able, backup TA partition then unlock it, then install a recovery and flash Supersu flashable zip, then flash stock kernel and then restore TA partition.

by than 4.4 is out..
Gettin abit confused now with all this root, bootloader, 4.3 stuff.
am still on 257 (rooted), i have the 4.3 OTA notice but i know if i update ill lose root (maybe partial root). ive heard that 4.3 can be rooted but requires unlocking the bootloader. when i go into the service menu it says: Bootloader unlock allowed: NO.
does this mean its not possible for me to root 4.3 at the moment.
if not then whats the limitation on Partial root, i dont do anything particular advance with root, just get certian apps (greenify, ad-away, autohide softkeys) can these apps still function properly on Partial root?
sorry i know these questions have been asked elsewhere but its pain trying to look through the many many threads or looking through about 60 pages on 1 thread.

Bootloader unlock allowed: NO means you can't unlock bootloader.
Partial root doesn't allow you to edit anything in the /system or in the root /.
Anything that edits system won't work (Probably autohide softkeys probably won't work. But it might work if you installed it before updating).

Is anyone working on rooting the .257 firmware?

I know the guys from XDA hate ETA questions but I just have to ask wether someone is working on rooting the .257 firmware with apps like vRoot or Kingo ROOT because I tried various methods that I found on XDA today to root it and I almost ruined the software and had to do a factory reset.

Did u update the firmware from an OTA update or you flashed the .275 directly? From what I read updating from an OTA keep the root you only need to install the supersu apk.

Yes OTA update (if available) will preserve root.
And I can't see how can you "ruin" your phone?!
You could wipe data but it's almost impossible to brick this device if you're using right firmwares

I just tried to root 257 with Kingo and did not succeed. Restarted four times in all, without any apparent damage to the phone. I hope Kingo will fix this soon and we will be able to root z1 running 257 stock. It's such a hassle free application! Good luck to them..

The camera hardware was working fine when you downgraded, it's just the SQLite database version was raised, and the old version of the camera app is incompatible with that. Wiping all camera apps' data would fix it.

OK, that is irrelevant to rooting then.
You can do the downgrade method and upgrade via OTA without losing any data then.

[Q] Clarifying question about 4.3 root.

This is for my curiosity and many other users who I know are wondering the same thing, I've searched for this, but can't really find anything that answers it to my satisfaction.
So I'm running 4.3, with build number .290
I want to root my phone, but I know I need to flash .534 back to my phone. As far as I know, THIS will stop my sim being recognised by the phone. Do I then need to ROOT the phone, and then flash .290 again for the sim to work again.
So which .290 flash will I use? Just the normal FTF file for .290?
Thank you, I'm an active contributor to the forum, but I like to be super sure about what I'm doing before I do it, and I gather many other users do. The reason I'm asking in such detail is because my phone was rooted before, I updated (by mistake) to 4.3 and then flashed back to .290 where it stopped my sim working. Took me a few hours to work out how to fix it, as the pccompanion wasn't working for me!
Thank you!

If you want to flash the firmware you have, follow this guide from part B to part C, then you will have a ftf copy of your current firmware.
About the root thing, downgrade to .257 then .534 so you don't have the IMEI and signal issues. Then root and OTA to .257 and then, if you get OTA update to .290 go for it, but some people said that you will only get partial root access.
So you will have to either flash a prerooted firmware or unlock bootloader and turn off Sony's RIC and then root the normal way.
To unlock bootloader, just follow the instructions here but don't forget to backup the TA partition using this guide.

[Q] Downgrade from 4.3 (C6903) Xperia Z1 14.2.A.0.290 Generic NCB (Unbranded/Nordic)

Hi everybody!
This is my first post as I usual solve my problems just by reading others people posts.
I recently flashed my z1 (C6903) to 14.2.A.0.290 Generic NCB (Unbranded/Nordic) (4.3 android) as I didn 't like the DE(german version) with the bloatware. I rooted it before with kingo but lost my root after flashing the NCB version I'm now looking for a way to downgrade to a older ncb version root it with kingo and then do a ota upgrade to keep the root. Does anybody have the FTF therfore and what boxes should I pick I want to keep my data or should I let it do a full wipe do a backup with sony companion or the sony app on the phone and than play it in after finishing the downgrade root and OTA? Pls help me I' m completly lost and I'm really missing the root.
Thanks in advance to everyone!!!!!

My experience is that if older FTFs aren't in the mega thead (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2469191), then you won't find them anywhere. Mega thread only has a 290 FTF for NCB, so you may be SOL if you want to strictly downgrade to 534 NCB and then OTA to 290. However, as long as you flash a generic FTF, you won't get carrier bloatware.
If root is what you'd want, I'd go with [NUT]'s pre-rooted 290: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2572988. It's the easiest way to get full root.
..or you follow the instruction step by step here on page 2, post #16 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588331&page=2

It is incorrectly named Generic SE, but it is the right customisation ID for Generic NCB (1276-9897).

Sony PC Companion can make a backup for you, I don't know how much will be saved as in order to flash a 4.2.2 ROM you'll need to wipe your data partition.

257 can't be rooted manually, only 534 can be rooted by vRoot/Kingo/etc.
Since you are downgrading, you must wipe data and will lose everything you don't copy off the phone.

No, it's not possible to upgrade 257/290 and keep root. You asked about downgrading, not rooting 290. If you have an unlocked BL, go read the dev thread on how to root 290. With a locked BL, you'll need to get rooted 534/257 and then flash a custom pre-rooted ROM from the dev forum.

Actually with OTA you keep semi-root, but in essence you're right. Actually I think the easiest solution is to flash a stock .534 ROM, root it with Kingo, grab TA partition backup, flash .290, unlock bootloader, flash a recovery, do a proper root, reflash stock boot partition, flash TA backup.

Yeah, true, I've just stopped telling people about partial root since full root is possible. Those who don't know to ask don't know what it means anyway, and it's just simpler for everyone involved to leave it out.

Not from a 757 firmware.
You can try excluding data when using flashtool, but I wouldn't do that.
However, if you can update to 4.4.4 via pccompanion you will not lose data and you can root that very easily without losing data using newroot

Yes there is, what build number are you on, you said 757, but that's not 4.4.4
Please post what it says in the build number and android version from settings/about phone

4.4.2 (woops thought i was on 4.4.4....)
14.3.A.0.757
OK, you will probably lose data when rooting then.
Flash a FTF from the FTF mega collection that ends in .108 or .118
then use the newroot tool to root it

Because you cannot root 757 FW
Either downgrade to android 4.2 (i.e a firmware ending in .534) or upgrade to the latest android version 4.4.4 (ending in .108 or .118) and root it.
