No! you need stock recovery for ota. you'll get prompted when the ota will be available and you'll be able to download it but it will fail the installation.

if you want to root you just need to flash twrp 2.6.3.3 custom recovery. Enter recovery then exit, you'll be prompted to root your phone. After install SuperSu apk ok Superuser. Btw you'll probably loose root when you'll update the phone ota.

It should update with root but you'll probably loose root access after any OTA. You then will need to root again. I converted my phone like you with the 3.22.1540.1 ruu and rooted it with twrp recovery. Then I flashed back stock recovery and I had no issue updating ota twice (4.06.1540.2 then 4.06.1540.3) even if I had root. But I lost root privileges and needed to root again.

Also restore stock recovery otherwise may screw up on OTA

What about after flashed the recovery . Then issue a fastboot erase cache command? Will it reset everything and delete the sd contents?

ok first you need to understand some basics:
/system partition is where your OS is stored
/data partition is where your user data are stored
/recovery partition is the alternative boot partition to access recovery console (stock or custom recovery like cwm or twrp)
/cache partition is where the OS store frequently accessed data from app
/sdcard is where you store your personal files like music, docs, pictures etc...
when you flash recovery it only affect /recovery partition
when you erase cache it only erase /cache partition, not /data not /system and not /sdcard. So no user data or personal files will be wiped
data wiped from /cache will be automatically reloaded as you continue using the device.
and FYI when you perform a factory reset, this wipe /data
Hope its clear for you now.

"fastboot boot recovery.img" is no longer supported in hboot 1.54.
You'll have to "fastboot flash recovery <name of recovery>.img" and then access it through bootloader.

is there another way without losing stock recovery ??
I want this backup so I can receive future updates , and I cant find any RUU,ZIP and nandroid backup of my ROM x.xx.401.9 :crying:
To make a backup you'll need a custom recovery, you can use "fastboot boot" to boot that .img without permanently flashing it to make a recovery and then go back to stock though.

You can use the stock recovery of 2.24.401.8 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2463387
It should be the same. I know that 2.24.401.1 (M7_UL) and 2.24.401.2 (M7_U) have the same recovery; so it's safe to assume that 2.24.401.9 (M7_U) and 2.24.401.8 (M7_UL) are the same too.
EDIT: you wouldn't have a copy of the OTA file, would you?

I've tried too, it won't work unfortunately. I helped a friend with 2.24.401.2 which has hboot 1.54 and it no longer works. stock recovery from 2.24.401.1 was the same as 2.24.401.2.
Wish someone would share the OTA for 2.24.401.9.

[SOLVED] Unable to install new HTC ONE update!

Hey guys! So, I got a pop up on my phone last week for the 4.4.2 update However, I seem to be unable to install it. I get booted into twrp, so I try to install it from there, but it says flash failed. I am completely hopeless with things like this (wasn't me who rooted my phone etc). Any help would be very appreciated and apologies for my stupid question.

post the output of fastboot getvar all minus IMEI/sn
Hi there.
I like fiddling and wanted to build some BLE apps and hence required Android 4.3 or higher. We were seriously slow with the updates here in South Africa and I decided to root and load stock HTC 4.3 and later 4.4. My phone does however want to do OTA updates on 4.4 (even though other M7 users here don't have it yet, only received 4.3 about a month ago, which was when I flashed 4.4). I understand 4.4.2 for the M7 is out and would like to keep with the HTC stock updates. I do however experience your exact same issue and have read previously that I need a stock Recovery.
My question is exactly the same as yours. How do I know which Recovery to download and where do I download it from. Finding ROMs is easy and so is custom Recoveries (like TWRP), but not sure about finding the stock Recovery.
Thanks guys!

The Stock recovery needs to match your current "version-main", so in your case a 3.63.x.x , if you can match all 4 numbers that's best but for sure the first two.

htc one ota update 4.4 sense6

After I unlocked and rooted my HTC one m7 I missed some of system apps and now I can't install ota update , I tried to install stock recovery but still failed..!
Yeah, once you root, no more stock OTAs. So, start researching custom Roms. You'll always be way ahead of stock OTAs anyway.

Rooting didn't stop my OTA. I was rooted before the OTA and remained rooted once applied.

never post imei and serialno from a fastboot getvar all and btwm you already have posted a getvar at post #4
do the ota update, when in recovery, vol+ and power to see what file cause the update to fail. look at the post I linked above.
when you have determined which file is missing or have unexpected content, you can push the correct one to your phone and try the ota again.

what to do if after vol+ & power button, then I choose "install from phone memory", the phone keeps giving me "invalid operation" messages and won't get to the file directory. I'm on S-on, unrooted, stock recovery, stock ROM, hboot 1.55. I tried to install OTA updates from htc1guru, from 3.63.707.4 to 4.20.707.7
Thanks

7.19.401.2 can't be flashed on your phone since your version is 7.19.401.22 (downgrading requires S-OFF, your phone is S-ON). So you need the 7.19.401.22 RUU but I would try to flash only the 7.19.401.22 firmware before flashing a RUU.
Code:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip 7.19.401.22.zip
fastboot flash zip 7.19.401.22.zip
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin

Flashed TWRP 2.8.6.0 STARTING in recovery!.
Found in Windows explorer storage HTC one full 25gig, no free space. Only files from TWRP(?).
Delete unnecessary files, only left the resent backup (TRWP)
Restore backup.
Done!
