I have been using an HTC One (KitKat 4.4.2) for a few days now and discovered that I am unable to install apps that aren't from the app store.
Example: I download an .apk from the internet to my SD card and when I try to install it, the install button doesn't work, only the cancel button works. I then reboot my phone and once it's back up I am able to install the .apk. I would need to reboot again if I wanted to install another .apk file.
I have search and found some solutions but none of them have worked.
How can I fix this issue.

Have you got an unlocked bootloader and rooted already? If so, then you can get into the file Explorer with root option to delete the apk files directly from the folder..
Hit thanks if this has helped you

I wanted to avoid that option, but I'll give it a try.
There has to be an options in settings or security somewhere which is blocking it.

Yes I am not rooted. Is rooting necessary to install non-Market apps?
Can I 100% backup by original everything (KERNEL-ROM-I dont know what else etc) so that I can revert back to original system?
I am 99% sure you need to be rooted, otherwise how would you access them like find them on your device because I am rooted and use EX Manager as root user and that's how I side load them but anyone else please correct me?

i had the same issue, i posted a new thread asking about this but all i got was some funny solutions like reboot your phone, blink with your left eye ... etc.
so here is what i did to fix it
1- restore (the normal restore from backup & reset option on the settings) the whole device again after backing up all my data and removing the external SD card.
2- with the root still exists i rerooted using this method (Root MANY ANDROID!)
3- i installed all my apps and settings again manually to assure that there is no conflicts with the previous backup.
4- everything went well now

I have looked everywhere for this, but cannot find it. I am not sure how, but the systemui.apk is no longer on my phone, and so all features that it controls are not working. It is not listed in the "All Apps" section of the apps manager.
Symptoms: When my phone rings the notification to tell me who is calling does not pop up. I have to go into the phone app to even see who is calling, much less answer the call.
My notification bar is gone.
When I get a text message my phone will vibrate, but not chime.
My wall paper is gone.
I have found threads about rooted phones where people have removed the systemui that this are the same symptoms they have. The problem is that they had the original rooted program they used, so can reinstall that. I cannot do that, as my phone is not rooted. That is why I think my systemui is gone.
Install root explorer and check in /system/app folder for the apk, or in /preload/symlink/system/app. If it's there in preload, you will need to create a symlink for that in system/app.

You won't be able to install it as you're not rooted and it requires administrator privileges. But it's there anyway so I don't think that's the issue.
When did it stop working and was there any app you installed beforehand?

Thats really strange... Try rebooting into recovery (Vol up, home and power held down until you see samsung logo) then choose wipe cache and reboot. I doubt that will fix it though.
Only other options I can see are to root device by installing phillz kernel, wipe cache and dalvik from recovery, or root device, reinstall the app and make sure permissions are correct, or wipe device and start from scratch.

Stop playing with essential parts of your system if you have absolutely no idea of what you are doing.
To get back to a reliable configuration:
download a stock rom and install it following the instructions in Dr. Ketan's thread here.
After that: start to read and learn. High probability this will protect the life of your device.
Alright guys I need your help, and I couldn't find anything that helped. Anyways I was messing with my phone, and I got a system notification that wouldn't clear in the notification bar. I usually just click on the app and click "force close" from the settings app. Unfortunately I accidentally clicked disable instead, and now I can't seem to re enable the settings.
I'm currently running the venom Rom from kit Kat 4.4.2. Hopefully someone can help, and not laugh at me too much. Anyways thanks in advance.

Like clsA said, just re-flash the rom, you will have to wipe everything, possibly your internal storage too as if I remember right, Venom Rom stores the settings there, I know for sure it stores themes and mods there, this will leave your phone completely empty apart from Bootloader and Recovery, you will then have to push the ROM to your internal storage and flash it.
Place the rom in the same folder as adb and fastboot on your computer, put the phone in recovery (main screen only), plug into the PC and open a command window in your fastboot/adb folder and type adb push (rom name).zip /sdcard/
Then flash it.
Alright I'll try that now that I'm home I'll see if that works thank you.

I disabled the settings app. You know where you can see app settings and such. I'll have to wait a bit before I can use a computer. But I was wondering, after using the app you suggested (didn't seem to work on my problem) I was able to find the "settings.apk" file. Wondering if uninstalling and reinstalling the "settings" app would fix anything with out having to lose any of my data. But I'm also not sure if uninstalling the settings would damage my phone, or if I do uninstall it might not let me install it again.
I tried installing the apk with out uninstalling it first and it just said application not installed
