[Q] Xperia X10A - Can't get past the lockscreen - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. I just got an Xperia X10A off eBay. The seller said that it had a lock code that they couldn't get past, so I Googled it, and it looked like a hard reset was fairly easy. So I tried the Left+RIght+Power button combo while the phone is off, and that isn't working, it just boots into Safe Mode, which still won't let me past the lock screen. I can't get in to enabled USB debugging. What other options do I have for this? Is there a way to mount the phone's storage fdisk it to manually reinstall Android or something?
Thanks much, I really appreciate it.
Edit: I just realized this might not be the right forum area for this. If a mod wants to move it, I would appreciate it.

[Q] Pattern lock -> Too many tries

I was playing around with the pattern lock and eventually got the 'Too many pattern attempts!' message, with it asking for my Google username and password to log in.
No matter what, it doesn't accept my username/password. I am 100% sure I've typed it in correctly.
This bug has been around for over a year with many people reporting 'bricked' phones without even doing anything particularly naughty with their phones.
This is the Google bug that has been posted on it: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=3006#makechanges
As you can see this has been around for over a year. The 'null'-in-password trick doesn't work, nor does the spamming-home-button trick.
My phone is rooted and with the Voodoo Lagfix-only custom kernel. Any suggestions?
Do a hard reset / wipe. That's my suggestion.
Try booting into recovery (Home Button, Vol Up + Power), and resetting your cache and wiping it. Then try logging in with your Google account. If all else fails, try changing your Google password on the PC then logging in on the phone. And then if it still fails, looks like you need to flash the phone again. Next time, don't enter the thing wrong! Stop rushing haha .
I wasn't rushing, I was playing with the lock. It takes about 30 times before it's permanently requiring the username/password. But really...you can't blame me for not expecting this. :/
I'm currently trying to flash a new ROM but I've run into another problem - I can't get it to boot into downloader/recovery. It's not the lack of the 3 button combo - I've managed to reach Recovery and Downloader ONCE each in the past, but never again since.
And now with all my efforts to boot into recovery/downloader, it now cannot boot into normal usability mode (or in my case, locked mode). Instead, the Galaxy S logo loops endlessly.
Sigh.
Have you read the thread for the fix for Galaxy S variants that are lacking the 3 Button Combos? It's in Android Development. Maybe try that? Or, can you still connect the phone and connect with Kies?
I can't turn on the phone anymore, meaning no changing to USB debugging etc. And I'm having problem accessing recovery/download, even though I definitely HAVE done each of them once before and therefore do not have the 3 button problem.
Without turning on my phone, Kies can't detect it
So what happens when you power on?
Now, it shows the first Galaxy S splash screen, then shows the boot logo, then nothing. The boot logo continues to glow endlessly.
Be patient, i waited up to five minutes. If you see the s logo glowing/shining youare ok

Yeah it's continuously shining. Haven't left it for up to five minutes though... And even then it probably won't help since I'm still locked out of the phone, and unable to access download/recovery mode to reflash it.
After waiting for a long time, the logo disappears, screen goes black. Menu and back buttons light up. Nothing else.
Looks like your going to have to reflash your phone again. Download the desired firmware, open up Odin and put your phone into download mode and start the flashing procedure. Be more careful next time.

Good advice considering he said his 3 button combo stopped working =))
All I did when I got that black screen was adb reboot recovery and wiped and phone bootedup fine. But only if you have debuging enable and and sumsung drivers. Hopes this help.

Ok i did the same thing, and spent hours googling.
Tried the key combinations to restore, but never worked.
Heres what worked for me, but, be warned all your contacts will be lost if stored on the phone.
From another phone, call your locked number.
Answer it on the locked phone, then hit the "back" button.
This gives you full access to the phones menus etc.
Hang up on the phone you called from.
Now, go into Applications / Settings / Privacy / Factory Data Reset.
This worked for me whereas all other methods did not.
Once your phone is up and running again, be sure to create your google account on your phone.
That way your protected again. If you didnt previously have the account set up from your phone, like i didnt, then you cannot log in of course.
This works...give it a try. Hope it helps.

dear friend dont worry or panic... i'll tell you a trick , go to the samsung customer care and tell them that your phone gets heated up very often and today it just refuses to boot up normally...
since your device cannot get into recovery mode or download mode the company will never know that you had played with the system files in the device or not... (rooted )..
since the samsung people will also try to get your device in recovery mode.. but when it will not go to the recovery mode you will get a mother board replacement under warranty.....
this heating up of the device is a common problem in the galaxy here in india.. so use this excuse and i know it works 100% ... (just dont tell them that you had rooted and lagfixed your device )
What you describe sounds like a very large security hole if I am reading it correctly.
Are you saying that even if your phone has been locked out from too many lock screen failures, that just answering an incoming phone call gives you full access to the phone? Really?
I just checked on my phone and while I can answer an incoming call while the screen is locked, if I hit the back button or menu button, I just get the lock screen.
I'm missing something here...

UNBRICK your SEMI-BRICKED Galaxy S - Solution

Hi. Just a few hours ago while I was on my way home, I was browsing some news feeds with my SGS and I noticed some lag so I thought of restarting it, but to my surprise.. it was not booting anymore and it was stucked displaying the "S" screen then after a while it will go black although the buttons are still lighting up but there is no response or any activity in the screen and the only way to turn it off is to pull out the battery.
Upon getting home, I browsed the internet to find similar cases with most of the suggestions on how to "fix" this was to bring it back to Samsung Service Center and I'm not ready yet to do that so I dug in deeper to research. I just want to share the steps I have done to UNBRICK my almost Semi-bricked SGS.
First of all, my SGS doesn't have access to the 3 button mode recovery (Volume up + Power + Home) thus basically leaving me helpless because I cant reformat my phone from there and worst, in this case, my phone wont even boot up.
Secondly, it was fortunate that i had my phone rooted prior this.
Now, the process:
You should atleast have:
* KIES installed
* Android SDK
* USB Cable
First thing I did was:
* Connect my phone to the USB cable
* Turn phone on
* Wait for KIES to detect it and for windows to install necessary USB drivers (my phone was detected by KIES even if it was hanging in the "S" screen)
* When everything is done, go to COMMAND prompt in windows
* Locate where you initially placed the ANDROID SDK then Tools folder by typing it, example: (C:\Android-sdk\tools)
* when you are already in the right folder type in ADB REBOOT RECOVERY
* Check your SGS and it should be rebooting to the RECOVERY MODE wherein you will now be able to select format options
* move your selection by pressing up and down volume keys
* confirm your selection by pressing home key
* then reboot again and presto.. your phone should be up and running again
Anyway, if you cannot access the recovery mode by using the 3 button process, it could probably because your operator intentionally locked this feature out. There is a fix I found from XDA that works search for : 3 button mode fix
Hope this helps and drop me a message if you have queries.
By the way, i'm trying to restore my apps again so ciao for now.
-Charles
you forgot to mention something
You must have USB Debugging mode set to enabled before hand, before all of that happened, else if you simply plug the USB cable to the PC with the 3 button disabled, there is no way for it to accept the ADB Reboot Recovery command
The next best thing is as many have commented before
It's to use a hair drier to heatup the phone to get access to the 3 button recovery, for those that got stuck before installing the 3 button recovery fix
also forgot to mention that this has been asked, posted, discussed many many times already. i am glad, however, that you got your phone to work
but he has it listed in a very nice an easy to read format, compared to the other ones we have seen previously
my phone did that a lil while back but i have an early ship date phone there fore i have the hard ware recovery option but this is late coming how is it that every one always says to use odin to recover a bricked phone yet i guess im totally noobish but what good is a back up recovery tool if you cant mount storage

[Q] Bell Vibrant, black screen, no recovery

I've read several topics but i couldn't find the right answer. I hope you can help me.
The problem i have happened without me doing anything recent. I have never flashed any rom, and i rooted my phone for titanium backup like 2 month ago and it worked fine. The last things i did was to install pocket legend, the new mmorpg like 3 days ago.I charge my phone during night, and take it for the day in the morning. Today, the screen stayed black when i picked it up. When i reboot, the screen goes black after the samsung logo.
The problem is that i have recovery mode (the 3 buttons) disabled and when i try to connect to kies it says i am not in samsungs kies mode.. Is there a way to force it to detect my phone so i can try update it?
According to the wiki, my phone doesnt seem to be bricked as i can still see the battery charging when i plug it. Is my phone bricked? Any hope?
I know the easiest way would be to return it to the store, but i dont want them to see my personal information/rooting as i cant even factory reset it.
There is also that topic on internal sd that has failed but i think this is not my case. You can still boot into android without the internal sd right?
I've seen a topic on soldering two mini usb cable to force the phone to go into recovery mode. I not familar enough to do it. If this method could solve my problem, could anyone sell me one?
Was there an over the air update today that could've done this to my phone?
I am lost, please help i am really clueless in what is happening to me.
are you able to go to download mode
flash your phone that way with odin i had the same problem as you
download mode as in using the 3 buttons? no i cant unless there is another way?
I can't get odin to recognize my phone.. I can't get into os so no usb debugging...

Okay, I know the jig will DEFINITELY work in this case. Any phone state I've come across with that jig, I can throw the phone into downloading. However, it seems that there MAY be hope for you PRIOR to using the jig. Are you familiar with the ADB commands? If so, turn on the phone, connect via USB, run cmd as administrator, navigate to the proper adb folder and under the prompt type in adb devices. If it shows any device, type in adb reboot download and it'll throw it into download mode for you.

Good to hear that the JIG would work. As for ADB commands, doesn't it need the usb to be put in debugger mode? Is there any way to do it externally, without going in the setting menu? I am not very familiar with the adb commands but if its doable i will go read about it.
Thanks for suggestions!

I still tried but it said that it couldn't find my phone.

Did you really tryed Download Mode?
"Vol Down" + "Home" + "Power" instead of "Vol Up" + "Home" + "Power"?
I tried several time different combo listed on wiki without any success. About 3h long!
I bought my phone the first day it came out so i guess the hardware method is locked.
As soon as i can get it back running i will apply that new fix for the combo.
I am a bit worried about the homemade JIG, will it still work without usb debugging?

I was going to by an iphone until a sales rep showed me the galaxy s and I was impressed until I saw the black screen of death. Can't get into recovery/dload mode Phone boots to white At&t screen makes few sounds
I have recently messed up my Captivate when I was trying to flash a ROM. My phone goes up to the white At&t sign and then makes a few sounds and stops. It also goes to the charging screen when plugged in the cpu when off. I have tried countless ways to get it to go into dl mode or even recovery mode. Ive tried: ADB vol up and down plus power with usb plugged in/battery put in, vol down usb plugged in/battery put in, vol up usb plugged in/battery put in, just vol up and down usb plugged in/battery put in, and nothing seems to be working. WITHOUT someone tellin me to use a jig can ANYBODY please help me find a way to do this. I have even pressed menu and volume down while the phone was in off charging state with green bar loading and the cpu made a sound and cpu said unrecognized device...from there I have tried to root my phone hoping it goes into recovery mod(which ive done to fix my phone before) also from there i have tried odin but no recognizance and I also have tried adb reboot download and adb reboot recovery. NOTHING WORKS...someone please HELP ME!
thanks in advance
What rom were you trying to flash?
why SO resistant to someone telling you to make/buy a jig? its a very easy thing to make and it will solve your no download mode issue in seconds. if nothing else will get you in download mode a jig will for sure (unless your usb port is broken) you can try and exhaust all other solutions but after you've ripped all your hair out build a jig.
its like trying to dig a ditch with a garden spade when you have access to a back hoe
Good point
stud u really make a goop point about it being easier to buy a jig than to pull ur hair out. Which if this kid really was pulling his hair out he shouldn't have been doing this at all. But, I am also having this same problem. I was using a CM7 build and it worked great until i tried to install the gapps. then it went crazy. It rebooted itself and went through the Cyanogen Mod first screen then would get stuck on the CM7 blue android on skateboard bootscreen. If I touched the screen at the bottom right it would vibrate for some reason. Shortly after realizing I needed a jig for it I decide to buy a new one cause at the time I didnt know if I could properly make one. So I've kept my first captivate still trying to find a non-jig method. I recently taught myself begginers adb on Windows XP OS but I am very much a noob except for rooting and flashing. Any help of yours would be great anytime. Thanks,
Matt

Shows that youve been a member since Dec-2010 so Im assuming that you really did try everything because you have read and read and read (riiiiiiight!?) and without telling us whether you tried to flash a Froyo or Gingerbread ROM I'd sugguest that you buy a JIG. Its really the best solution and the less time consuming if you cant think of anything else to try. You can order one or make your own...literally took about 30 minutes for me to get my phone to a place where i can work with it....a trip to the radioshack and making the JIG and back home.
If you are making requests on specifically NOT to tell you to do it a certain way then you may have to accept that you might have to solve this problem on your own, especially if you said that you tried everything except the one thing that you cant do (which is what we might suggest) and probably will fix your situation.
So i re-read after making my first post to this. I've bought my 5th Cap. now and have quite a bit more knowledge than before. So my question is. If I've completely bricked my 3rd cap... No battery charge screen and all will a jig still work for me to get into download? I was tryin to come back from cm7 but something went wrong.... I really don't need the extra phone but it would be nice to have my back up

If the screen doesnt turn on at all and there is no charge screen or recognition at all of usb than it is more likely then not hard bricked.

Nope nothing of any real value just heavily distorted colours. cannot touch anything on screen
OK, so after a while trying to access user partition via adb shell, pull, adb file explorers, etc. With no luck, I found that if:
You turn of your phone, hard power it off in your case since you can't confirm the on screen dialog (volume up + volume up until it vibrates three times).
Now that the device is turned off, plug both ends of the usb cable to the pc and phone, it should beep whatever, and then the charging animation should come up.
Turn on the device and let it boot without unplugging the USB.
When the device gets to the sim unlock screen, the PC should recognize the internal memory and you can access to it, since it probably hasn't load the pattern unlock stuff.
Give it a try. I've just done it several times and can access my data partition entirely.

Thankyou so much for your help, I wish I could say it worked but it hasn't. I did exactly what you said and my computer starts to recognise the phone but stalls on loading up data. it stops access to ''MY COMPUTER'' until the phone is removed at which point a dialog window pops up saying ''sony xperia z connected'' but of course now its been disconnected i cannot access anything regardless of the dialog window telling me my phone is connected
any other ideas? I really appreciate you putting in the time to help me
Just got it to work!!!! Thank you so much for your help. After I realised that the problem for loading extensions may be coming from my PC I ran AVG tuneup which fixes all hidden errors and it worked Instantly.
I recommend AVG tuneup to everyone, especially if you play a lot of games or install a lot of programs. Whenever Ive noticed sluggish performance on my PC i've ran a full scan and it has always fixed any issues.
Thank you so much again for the great help, very impressed with this community and its great attitude toward helping others.
So it was a drivers issue of some sort. Did my method worked in the end? I found it randomly. I call it a security issue though, this time came in handy.
Glad you could fix your problem.
