[Q] Problem with rooted Nook and ROM Manager

Hi all,
I hope this is the right place to put this - I'm not sure if it's a Nook Color, Cyanogenmod, ROM Manager, or Clockworkmod issue. I just rooted my NC to CM7 using Clockworkmod and it seems to work fine. I tried installing the GoogleApps .zip file at the same time. It said it was successful, but I don't see any of the Google apps in the apps drawer.
So, I went to ROM Manager to try and fix this. When I first opened ROM Manager it said I needed an SD Card installed to use it (I had removed it after the successful flash). So I inserted the card and mounted it in Settings->Storage and tried again. Now when I click on anything it says "You must have ClockworkMod Recovery installed before continuing! Install the recovery through ROM Manager first."
If I click the Install button, the dialog closes and nothing happens. If I click the menu option "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" the title of the screen (ROM Manager v4.2.0.0) flashes for a split second. That's it. Nothing is installed.
If I reboot while holding the upside-down U button I eventually get an "Update failed!" screen that looks like it comes from the standard Nook UI. If I try to reboot into recovery using the Power button it just reboots as normal.
I've found a large amount of resources online regarding the "unable to reboot into recovery" issue, but I feel like I don't know enough about what I'm actually doing to implement them. I also don't know how the inability to flash ClockworkMod fits into this. It's especially strange how selecting the option to flash it actually does nothing.
Anyone have ideas?

Question, did you have clockworkmod installed on your sd when you flashed cm7 or was it installed internally? Can you boot into recovery with rom manager? If clockwork is on sd, find the newest clockwork zip and flash it with your card internally. That should allow you to update to the newest version in Rom Manager. Try reflashing gapps.

Clockworkmod was installed on the SD card.
I cannot boot into recovery using ROM Manager. It just restarts the device as normal.
I believe I have the latest CWM because I grabbed it from their website yesterday (4.2.0.0). How do I flash it internally? That's what I was attempting to do with ROM Manager. I followed the steps listed in thread #922870 on this forum (still can't post links) and I believe that results in CWM on internal memory, but ROM Manager still behaves the same way.
I did reflash gapps twice, but there is still no Maps, Market, Gmail, etc.

I just noticed something else. When I mount my SD card on the NC it shows up as empty: /mnt/sdcard has no contents. Does this indicate an error with the SD card and/or partitions? I am using the 8 GB image of CWM on my 16 GB card (because there is no 16 GB version).

Your SD card has clockwork burned as an image which the nook cannot read. You can format the card later for use (go to nookdevs website). I am attaching a zip file for clockworkmod 3.0.1.0 (credit goes to Mistar Muffin). Put that on your SD card, insert it into the nook and boot it up. It should take you into recovery. You can then flash the zip file and get Clockworkmod on your emmc. You should be able to update to the new version 3.0.2.8 from Rom Manager at that point. I think the nook is confused with the absence of Clockwork internally. As far as your rom goes, I would boot into recovery when the Clockworkmod issue is resolved and reflash the CM7 build, reboot, go back into recovery and flash the gapps. You can repeat the process with an overclocked kernel if you choose. This zip is a file that floated around the forum for awhile. It was removed when Clockworkmod got an update. I have used it on my nook. It should be safe. Good luck

Thanks for your help; unfortunately this did not work. Nothing has changed. I placed the zip file in my SD card that already has CWM imaged. I went to "Install zip from SD card" and installed the zip. It completely successfully. Then I rebooted and entered ROM Manager, which told me I needed the SD card back in. I mounted the SD card and am encountering the same issues as before.
What could I have possibly done to mess this up? I followed all the steps listed on the Cyanogenmod website and they never mention anything about flashing CWM internally. Another question - why do I need the SD card for ROM Manager if that app is downloading things from the internet?

Try uninstalling and reinstalling Rom Manager. Dont know if that will help or not.

How would I reinstall ROM manager? I don't have any sort of Market on the device.

Best best bet is going back to stock and trying from scratch

Sorry, my bad. I forget that Rom Manager is part of the CM7 package. You should not need the sd card for Rom Manager to work properly. I am not sure why it is calling for it. Can you reboot into recovery with the power+n method, not the SD card? If you can do that, it tells me clockwork installed correctly. If you can get there, I would do your formats (data, system) and reflash the rom. Another option, if Titanium Backup is part of the rom package try to wipe data in rom manager and give it another try. You may can do that in manage applications (I don't have my nook with me). The link below may or may not help. Look at option 3. The 3.0.1.0 zip it is calling for is the one I sent you prior. I am about out of options. Good luck.

AHA! I solved it, and it wasn't directly an issue with anything except my stupidity. I was connecting to my company's guest wireless, which as it turns out requires a username/password before you get anything other than the login screen. That is why the ROM manager was failing to flash itself - it had a worthless wifi connection. When I switched to another wireless access point it works just fine.

I think the reason why I could not install the cm10.2 again maybe caused by load the internal memory too much. I saw someone said to install the cm would not format the data in the internal memory. When the memory is almost full , it won't install apps . Maybe it can not rewrite the rom. If so , how can i delete my personal data .?Now i can not boot the tablet , and even can not connect it to a PC. I am at a loss and very worried. I am out of USA , and it is almost impossible for me to return it to B&N to have it repaired. Could anyone here give some advice to repair it .

There appears to be a bug in internal storage software used in Nook HDs that leads to internal storage dying under certain conditions, though the conditions are not exactly clear, but it also seems to do with a new feature added in Android 4.3
I disabled this feature on 8/15, though it's not yet clear if 8/15 nightly was built with that added or not.
The bug is not unique to Nooks too, Some Galaxy Note devices that use a very similar samsung-branded internal storage also have this problem.
But not gave the solution , could anyone solve this problem and give the solution step by step to me, thanks. i am just at a loss here

I'm having a similar issue except I can get the nook logo on screen and sometimes the Cyanoboot Universal Bootloader screen. Both freeze at that point though.

I think this fatal problem is very common . Does anyone else have the same problem? If so , reporting here to get the officials' attention . Now verygreen is working on it , but he hasn't given the solving date .

Same problem here.
I'm using cm-10.2-20130815-NIGHTLY-ovation and gapps-jb-20130813-signed. Same problem as above. boots to Nook loading screen and that's it. I left the device connected to my PC copying files and came back to a dead device. Charged it and now it's not booting at all.

Now I can nearly confirm there is a fatal bug in the 8/15 rom , so many are affected by it .I recommand others not to update to the cm10.2 before the problem is solved and the official should offshelve it from the website and give a solution as quickly as possible.

Booting to Nook loading screen (with no sdcard in) is different symptoms from the total emmc brick, because when emmc is bricked, so no loading scring could be possible.
In any case, the important part is, if somebody has a total bricked device and would like to donate it to me for further research on unbricking (and I will return it if succeeded), shoot me a PM.
Or if you have a brick and feel technically advanced enough to be able to run various custom kernels, CWMs, have adb working and know how to use it and are familiar with linux and willing to try to help, also PM me.

The info is likely not recoverable without some significant effort anyway, but I certainly can understand this decision too.

Count me too in the list of bricked HD+s. I was on CM10.2 0815.
It started with a reboot, but the boot process got rebooted again. Now it would just hang on Cyanoboot screen. I have tried SD Recovery but it showed that sd card or EMMC cannot be mounted. Now it will not even boot to recovery from SD card. I have tried the bootloader which gives you an option to choose SD recovery or boot normally and the boot loader loads but it cannot boot to either EMMC or SD recovery.
Worse part is that it hangs on the Cyanoboot screen. Not sure even Nook will honor the warranty.
Edit: BTW I never installed fstrim or anything like that. It probably was the 0813 version that initiated it but I wonder why it failed in 0815 when trim has been removed?

if it boots into CM logo with no sdcard in, then your emmc is at least answering, chances are you can just flash stock zip from leapinlair's stock hints thread from my noemmc sdcard cwm (or his from his thread)
Also failing that if you are just interested in warranty service, boot from my noemmc cwm, adb shell in and execute this:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/mmcblk1p1
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/mmcblk1p2
this will make the cyanogen logo display go away and you'll just have black screen on boot.

I have tried a number of different sdcard recoveries including cwm-early7.1 and leapinlair's as well, but the tablet never finishes booting even the recovery. If it is just SD card recovery, it will keep showing the cyanoboot screen. I modified the recovery (from Leapinlair's provided file) that gives you an option to boot into SD card recovery or into Stock rom (which does not exist for me but just an option). I get the option screen but selecting the SD card recovery just freezes the tablet.
I was planning to
1) write the recovery to sdcard,
2) increase the size of the recovery partition using EASUS partition manager,
3) putting emmc recovery, stock or CM rom, and gapps in the expanded partition
4) booting into it and installing all of these
but I never get into booting into recovery with or without expanded sd recovery. I also tried every sdcard recovery out there. No success.

note it reverts sdcard and emmc, so now sdcard is mmc0 and emmc is mmc1 (does not matter for stock as it installs using named aliases anyway, but matters if you plan to do any commands by hand in terminal).
This recovery certainly works even when emmc is totally dead so should work for you too.

Hi Verygreen, what's your suggestion on contacting b&n? since it's still under warranty and I can't even turn it on so should I send it in for repair or replace?

it does not really matter. "repair" is a codeword for "replace" these days, it's just they get your unit in and then send you one of their pile of repaired units, then see if they can fix yours and if they can, they add it to the refurbished pile to send to whoever send their stuff in next, or to sell through some side channel.
And of course I do recommend you to go the repair/replace route (unless you want to donate a broken unit to me for further research, of course ). Who knows, you might even win the emmc lottery and get emmc that is not buggy too.

I have noticed something else. When I connect the nook to pc without a sdcard, I can see a Blaze_Tablet while if i (try to boot) from sdcard, it shows a B&N Nook HD+ with a question mark. Does it tell you anything.
When it shows that a nook has been connected, I tried installing the drivers from LeapinLair page but windows says that no compatible drivers found. I think I have to get to install those drivers before I could connect using ADB.
When and if I boot to sdcard recovery, what should be I doing next to fix the tablet?

see if you can mount /cache:
in adb shell:
mount /dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.1/by-name/cache /cache
if that does not work, try reformatting it:
mke2fs -t ext4 /dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.1/by-name/cache
see if that succeeds.
then try rebooting again without sdcard and see if that helped.

[Q] Nook HD keeps booting into CWM/Cyanoboot

I have two NookHD+ but bought a HD for one of my sons. Got it yesterday and went about trying to figure out how to get CM 11 or 10.2 on it.
So took me forever to figure out it won't boot to SD without the power cable plugged in, even if battery is full. Whatever.
1. So created boot SD with NookHD-bootable-CWM-6027-for-emmc-stock-4GB-rev3-(02.03.13).img
2. Wiped and then installed cwm-recovery-hummingbird-5.zip
3. Tried to install cm-11-20140117-UNOFFICIAL-hummingbird-emmc.zip but failed saying something like "System 7" (not sure about "System" but 7 I'm sure about.)
Gave up on CM11, decided to try 10.2
1. Did a restore, wiped, then installed cm-10.2-20140117-UNOFFICIAL-hummingbird-emmc.zip and gapps-jb-20130813-signed.zip
2. Now with SD card removed it boots to CWM. I thought it might be something to do with cwm-recovery-hummingbird-5.zip so I tried cwm-recovery-hummingbird-2.zip but it still boots to CWM with the card removed.
Previosuly I screwed the pooch with one of the HD+and I had a stock ROM, but can't seem to find one for the HD.
Anyway, I hope someone had the answer please, son was using it a little stock and it's just plain broken now, so I feel like a jerk. HELP!:crying:

If possible, try starting from the beginning. Installing CM11 for many users has been problematic; so I'd recommend CM10.x for now.
Insert your SD card into your computer's card reader, and format it using SDFormatter. Now using your preferred tool, burn the .img file to your SD card (NookHD-bootable-CWM-6027-for-emmc-stock-4GB-rev3-(02.03.13).img).
Once burned, download a stable version of CM10.2.1 (or 10.1.3 if you prefer) from: http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=hummingbird&type=stable and download gapps from: http://goo.im/gapps for the version of CM you download. Also download "CWM Recovery zip" (cwm-recovery-hummingbird-2.zip) for Nook HD at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2319000 (on the 5th paragraph). Once you have downloaded all three files, place them on your SD card.
Now eject your SD card from the computer. Turn your Nook off. Place the SD card in, and turn your Nook on (if your Nook does not boot from the SD card, do whatever method works for you to get it to boot). Once booted into CWM Recovery via SD card, install "cwm-recovery-hummingbird-2.zip", now reboot your device. Make sure you're in this version of the recovery. Now clear your cache partition, and install both CM and Gapps.
After flashing/install, try rebooting. Hopefully you should be able to boot into CyanogenMod. If not, reply back please and I have another definite trick up my sleeve.

The reason the CM11 did not install without an error message is it needs a newer version of CWM to flash it.
And you may need to go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread and flash the plain stock zip from item 6. That aborted CM11 install probably messed up your internal memory. Then you can start clean with CM10.2.

Thank you, I'll try it now, Formatted with SDFormatter and Burning NookHD-bootable-CWM-6027-for-emmc-stock-4GB-rev3-(02.03.13).img now (takes a while for whatever reason, class 4 card)
I'll then install...
1. Install cwm-recovery-hummingbird-2.zip - Reboot
2. Clear Cache, Wipe then
3. install cm-10.2-20140117-UNOFFICIAL-hummingbird-emmc.zip And gapps-jb-20130813-signed.zip.

Yeah you saved my HD+ with the stock image last time, but I can't seem to find the link or I don't recognize it. I must be blind, I'll go look closer...

Ok, got it working and I got it working with CW11.
HiddenG, I tried your steps as best I could and no love from the Nook. After getting NookHD-stock-2.1.1-rooted.zip and installing it from the CWM that was burned on to the SD, the unit appeared to be back to stock. So I'll document the rest for others trying to install CW11 on the NookHD.
1. Burned a SD card with NookHD-bootable-CWM-6027-for-emmc-stock-4GB-rev3-(02.03.13).img
2. Copied cwm-recovery-hummingbird-5.zip, cm-11-20140117-UNOFFICIAL-hummingbird-emmc and gapps-kk-20140105-signed to SD.
3. Booted from SD and cleared cache/wiped. Installed cwm-recovery-hummingbird-5.zip. (Cleared cache/wiped again because I'm never sure on the order of such things)
4. Removed SD card and booted from the internal CWM (the one installed from cwm-recovery-hummingbird-5) by holding down nook sign and powering on.
5. Installed cm-11-20140117-UNOFFICIAL-hummingbird-emmc and gapps-kk-20140105-signed. Cleared cache/wiped again because figured it was good to do ensure it was done.??
6. Remove SD card and Rebooted via the CWM menu.
7. Enjoying CW11

Nook HD not charging since CM11 install
This morning I installed the latest CM11 build (M11) on my daughter's Nook HD. Prior to that I was using the stock ROM with no issues. Since installing the ROM the tablet will not charge; rather than showing an orange light the device shows a green light whenever the charger is connected.
It seems possible that my cable has failed at the same time as performing the install, though a little unlikely.

Newbie Questions - B&N HD+
Hi - i am going to flash my B&N HD+ for the first time. i have been reading the forums and instructions and have few questions.
i want to do this without SD card (i can go buy one but i if not needed, i prefer not to use it). is this possible? in the EMMC thread, i still see that the SD card must be used for the flashing/booting. so essentially, to flash CWM 6046, is it possible to not use SD card? and if so, can someone tell me how to do that?

No, you must use an SD. There is no other way. And I suggest you use the dummies guide linked in my signature.

NookHDVolumeAdjuster for CM11 or CM10.2 ?
Is there a version of NookHDVolumeAdjuster that runs under CM11 or CM10.2 ? I am using version 1.0 under CM10.1.3. When I tried CM10.2, the sliders were all stuck at the far left. I need the sound higher volume, so I can't upgrade to CM10.2 or CM11. thanks.

Nook HD plus and Gapps error status 6
Good morning,
I was working on flashing my nook last night with
cwm-recovery-ovation-6.zip
cm-20141224-NIGHTLY-ovation.zip
I have tried many different versions of stock, modular-full, modular-mini and gets a status code 6, I have successfully flashed gapps-kk-20140606-signed, but when I try to use it, the playstore just hangs like it is loading. Can someone advise the steps I need to take to successfully install a working version of gapps?
I have tried factory wiping several times and flashing the various versions of GAPPS.
Thanks in advance for any assistance that you provide.

I'd suggest that you try resetting the Google Playstore app: go to Settings->Apps->Google Playstore, and do a "force stop" and "clear data" (after which you'll need to re-enter your Google (Gmail) account login/passwd).

CM11 M12 - Device Temperature
Hi all,
After staying around on CM10.2 for a long time due to a few issues with earlier snapshots of CM11, I've decided to upgrade to M12. Finding it runs great on everything I'm doing - definitely smoother performance. One thing I am concerned about is the temperature hike of my tablet, particularly when charged and running a game (in this instance, Terraria). Is anyone finding the back running quite hot? Can feel it on the screen and the left side of the device, but the temperature reading of 32C/90F doesn't seem that bad... it does feel worryingly hot though. Not sure if it's something on my end or a common thing with CM11, but I never had this on any other build.
As a sidenote - do the developers accept donations?

Audio stuttering in Rayman Jungle Run
I just did an SD card install of CM11 on a Nook HD+ and it's been working well (thanks!), except that I've noticed that the audio in Rayman Jungle Run and Rayman Fiesta Run tends to stutter / warble, making it unpleasant to listen to. Youtube and Great Big War Game sound are good. I'm using cm-11-20141129-UNOFFICIAL-ovation-sdcard.zip with its initial sdcard image for ovation (sdcard-cwm-early9.img) from the first post. The micro SD card is Samsung class 6 16GB.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Well, what I did, is I found the thread here that describes how to put B&N's OS v2.2.0 on a bootable microSD card. Once I had that working (it's not like B&N is ever going to update the firmware), I did a backup of the Nook's internal storage, and then installed CM11 on the internal storage.
That should solve your performance issues.
Note: You mention an HD+, but then refer to "Ovation", which is the name for the HD, not the HD+. You may want to edit your message to clarify the situation.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I would have done an internal install, but when I tried to backup the built-in firmware 2.2.0 using CWM 6.0.4.6 (from the OP), I got an error due to the /system partition being unmounted (I'm recalling this from memory; I hope I got it right). I tried using the mount option in CWM, but that failed too. I then said "screw it with the backup... I'll find another on the web", and then tried to do an emmc install of the latest milestone (M12) from the cyanogenmod download site (using SDCARD CWM-based 6.0.4.6 booted from SD... not internal memory), but the install failed with a "status 7" error (IIRC). I also tried using an earlier microSD image (sdcard-cwm-early7.1.img) and tried to install a backup of stock 2.2.0 firmware that I found from another thread here (thinking that maybe I had borked my own from an attempt at installing recovery CWM), but that finished too quickly (yet no errors), and on reboot it didn't appear to have overwritten my own stock firmware. After these efforts spanning a half dozen or so hours of reading, experimenting, etc., I was able to at least get the SD card install working, so I said screw it, I'll just use SD card. But I would really prefer an internal install as you suggest.

This worked! I now have an emmc install of cm11 M12 from the cyanogenmod site. Since I'm running Ubuntu GNU/Linux, not Windows, I replaced steps 1 to 3 in your instructions in the above link with (at terminal prompt, with microSD card inserted but unmounted):
gunzip emmc-cwm-early3.1.img.gz
sudo dd if=emmc-cwm-early3.1.img of=/dev/sdb
I then mounted the microSD card and copied (as root) the zip files as in your link, all with terminal. The unmounted /system partition error did not appear, and the M12 install went fine! When wiping I had an error related to sd-ext missing, but from some more searching I concluded that it was benign.
Thank you for helping me out. I was starting to give up before the help I've received here. I'm generally really pleased with the performance of cm11 on Nook HD+ so far. I'm not yet noticing much difference between emmc and sd-card installs, performance-wise.
Unfortunately, the earlier performance problem (sound stuttering/warbling in Rayman Jungle Run) is still there using this internal / emmc install vs. the earlier SD-based install of cm11, which suggests that the problem is in cm11 itself. On stock firmware (version 2.2.0 I believe when tested), Rayman Jungle Run ran fine (no sound problems at all). The sound problem may be a slowdown problem, but it's not severe.

Hi Guys, needing a bit of help to see if I can get my Nook HD+ back up and running.
A little background. Nook is 2013 model. Has worked pretty well in past, had added files last year to allow access to Play and flash, worked well, so I came back here when my nook went to the 99% reboot screen and has locked up there. B&N can't seem to help any. None of my computers will recognize the nook, so I can't sideload the NPK update that they said might fix the nook. So after laughing at their offer of an extra 10% off an ereader or the new Samsung, I decided to try changing to CM's Ovation. Have tried to follow Leapinlar's thread on installing CM and have tried 10.2,10.1 and a version of 11 along with another d/l of 10.2 from another poster.
I can boot from the SD card, but with really no currently working ROM, I need to use the install to internal version.
So I've used SD formatter on the SD card, copied over the files in order listed and then booted to the card.
Did a backup and restore, worked
did wipe data and factory reset
then install from sd card,
the system then gives me an error when installing the CM files:
Set_perm: some changes failed
E:Error in /sdcard/CM XXXX (no matter which CM I pick)
(status 7)
Installation aborted.
Any idea as to how I can resolve this?
I'm at a loss and can't find resolution.:crying:

What recovery exactly are you using to try and install CM? The one you boot from SD card? What version is it?
Some recoveries are too old to install CM11, for example. I suggest you install TWRP 2.7.1.0 as internal recovery on your Nook. You can download it here. Just put that TWRP zip file onto your bootable SD card, boot the HD+ and install the zip file. Then remove the SD card and format it, or use a different one that isn't bootable. Put the CM11 install zip file onto the card, insert it, and boot the internal recovery by holding the "N" button and powering up the tablet. Keep the N button pressed until the TWRP splash screen shows. If TWRP doesn't boot, then something went wrong. If it does boot, you can try and install CM11 with it.

Yes, as the prior user said, you are using the wrong version of CWM to install the CM zip. CM10.1 and CM10.2 need v6028 or v6036. CM11 needs v6046. You can get them from the dummies thread linked in my signature.

I have tried to follow the thread instructions and used what appeared to be matching installers, if I didn't, I did see error for not matching. I'll go and try above recovery. Got to probably get another sd card.

Tried all three of these in that order. none worked. I'll go try above and see if it will work.
