Nook - No ClockworkMod recovery - Already rooted

I have a Nook Color that has already has CM7 on it, running off of internal memory. (I did not do the install)
I inserted my own SD Card and attemped to install a recent build but I cannot get it to go into the Clockwork Recovery mode to install the update. Even weirder, it will not reset the device, I can't get the previous owners info off the device.
I'm new to the Nook, but have had many Android devices before and have rooted them all.
I've tried holding the N + Pwr buttons to get it into recovery more with no luck... I guess what I need is help on either resetting this device or updating from here?
Any advice would be helpful.

Do you have ROM Manager on it? If not, download it from the market. (You need a SD card inserted when using it.) Open it up and the 1st line should show if you have CWR installed and what version. If not installed, does it give an option to install the latest version? I would do that first and reboot. Then, you can use ROM Manager to update to a new nightly....

Yes, ROM Manager is what you need. The Nook is a little different from other devices because Clockwork is run from the SD card during the initial root/install. To get it on the internal memory, use ROM Manager's option to flash latest recovery, then use the option to boot into recovery.

Thank you for replying. I have ROM manager installed and have tried all the Clockwork Recovery version available... when i select reboot into recovery it reboots, says loading, then says android in landscape... and just boots into android.

What do you want it to boot into and why? Does ROM Manager show CWR installed internally? You should be doing everything from there. Open ROM Manager. If you see you have the latest CWR skip down to updating CM7. Pick the newest nightly, include google/market apps and go. On next prompt, wipe Davlik only. Let it do it's thing. It takes a little time to download and install. It will boot into recovery, do the installation and then reboot into the new nightly. Make sure the SD card you have instaolled is not a bootable card.

[Q] CM7.1 on SD...CWM on eMMC...wanna update to 1.3

Well from following some instructions on here for running CM7 off an sd card I ended up installing CWM that I did not know would go to the eMMC. So I have stock nook 1.2 software and CWM on the eMMC (by mistake), and CM7.1 on SD. I want to remove CWM off the eMMC so I can update to 1.3 and to unvoid my 2 year extended warranty. I have read through threads about returning to stock, but I haven't seen anyone with my same problem using those methods to confirm if it would work in this situation. Everyone seems to have been running some kind of root on eMMC and want to keep cwm. Also with my CM7.1 sd card out I can't get into cwm even though its on the eMMC and I have tried many ways. Do I need to have an update file on an sd card in order to get cwm to run?

Use the second file in the first post of the link below. It will restore 1.2 stock and remove CWM from the eMMC. You will have to re-register your Nook.

Actually if you have a separate bootable CWM microSD card (3.2.0.1 should be fine as 416 said) the Nook will default to booting from the SD card when you power on. No need to hold the N button. If the update file (zip format) I pointed to is on the SD card then you can pick it and install from the CWM menu that will come up. (I would make a backup of your current state onto the bootable CWM SD card first and copy the files to your PC just in case.)

EDIT* Ok guys here is my problem now. For the life of me it would not boot into recovery, so I tricked it by trying to install the 1.3 update which goes in CWM but fails. Once in the CwM menu after 1.3 failing I mounted the sd card and tried installing the zip that was on it. When trying to install it says installation failed and something else about verification failed similar to the 1.3 failed. Any help guys?
Would my next option be to create a CWM bootable SD? Anyone have the appropriate link?

Hrm.. seems like that may be beyond my paygrade...
Just to clarify (and sorry I can't be more specific as I just removed CWM, so I can't repeat my steps), when I did it:
1. I downloaded the aforementioned zip onto a spare sd.
2. I booted into CWM (it seems like your trick should be fine, after it gets you back to the main menu).
3. I selected "choose zip from SD" or something like that.
4. I selected choose zip from sd again (ignoring the "update.zip" option).
5. It did it's thing.
6. I selected back several times, to get main menu again.
7. I selected "factory reset" (wipe data & cache)
8. It did it's thing.
9. Reboot and I was good to go.
If that doesn't work, this thread has the instructions on taking it back to stock by creating a CWM card.

This is what I did
1. placed the zip file on a sd card
2. insert into the nook
3. power on
4. cant boot into recovery so placed the 1.3 update on emmc to fool it into going into recovery
5. 1.3 update failed but just used it to get into recovery
6. mounted sd card
7. select install zip from sd card
8. chose the file from sd card
9. yes install file from sd card
10. did not get a progress bar like the 1.3 update b4 failing
11. install failed...verification error (similar to 1.3 update error)
The problem with the thread you linked is that its using CWM 3.0.0.5 when the thread about restoring NC 1.2 says it need at least CWM 3.0.1.0

Hrmm... maybe the zip is a bad file? Have you tried downloading it again?
Beyond that, someone with more expertise may need to chime in.
Sorry about the out-of-date thread. It's just the one I bookmarked after I realized I had accidentally installed CWM to my emmc instead of my SD. I never got around to it; dtbrewer's post today seemed like an easier fix.

Wrote the image to the sd installed the zip file and now I'm updated to 1.3 on the stock software and my 2 year extended warranty isn't voided anymore. THANKS GUYS!

Posted this in another thread, but thought I'd ask here as well. If you follow the fix listed in this thread, can you use the dual boot sd card and still have B&N 1.3? Or does updating to 1.3 mean you can no longer use the dual boot sd card. What I'd ideally like to have is dual boot from SD, but when I choose to boot to emmc, it will run the 1.3 B&N firmware. Is that even possible?

Updating CM7

I have been lazy all these days & currently on CM7 version 72 I guess. Now I want to update it to latest nightly, 208.
I currently have ROM Manager 4.4.0.7. And I think the ClockWorkMod installed is no longer exists. Because in ROM Manager when I click on "Manage & Restore Backups" it says I must have CWM installed. SO I guess earlier version of CWM is gone now.
Earlier I used to update CM7 by preparing SD card, moving the ZIP file to it & flashing in ROM Manager by booting into recovery.
Now I have forgotten every damn thing, so I want to know how to update to latest nightly. Thanks in advance

I was actually in a similar situation as you earlier this morning, and was able to update just now. To recap what you have to do:
[Since I'm a new user and can't post URL's, just add http colon // to the following addresses]
Get Eyeballer's clockwork image: tinyw.in/0Vw
Decompress the image.
Burn the decompressed image to a microSD card with this: launchpad.net/win32-image-writer
(As I'm sure you know, that'll erase everything in the card, so back it up first. Also, it'll show up as 1GB. When you're done with the upgrade you have to reformat it to get the full space back)
Copy onto the microSD card's root directory the following:
The newest multiuboot: dl.dropbox.com/u/20480343/multi-uboot-v0.4.zip
The newest nightly image: download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=encore
Don't decompress them!
Boot the NookColor with the microSD card inserted. A pair of skulls should show up, indicating that Clockwork is booting.
Once booted, one of the menu options is "backup/restore". From there you can do a backup, which I recommend.
(In case you don't remember, like I didn't: Use the volume buttons to move up/down, use the "n" button to select a menu item, and use the power button to go back to a previous menu)
For the actual upgrade, choose "install from zip", and select the nightly image zip file, and then confirm.
After the upgrade, repeat the "install from zip" with the multiuboot zip file.
And you're done with the Nook!
As for your microSD card:
If you did a backup, you'll find a folder named after the date and time in the microSD card, in clockwork/backup/. I'd save it to the computer just in case.
Now, reformat the microSD card to get all your space back.
Finally, copy back the original files that where in the microSD.

I bought my Nook through a friend at work and as I look at the CM7 mod version it is...
CyanogenMod-7-0409211-Nightly-encore
It looks like the last nighty was done in Apr 9/2011, so it's due for a well deserved update.
1. with my mod version being so old, do I need to do incremental updates or the latest nightlies is good enough.
2. I have the rom manager but not the clockwork, where do I get this.
3. is 2gig card enough to update, i rather not format my existing card in the nook to use for my update.

Woops, totally forgot that my Nook is dual-booting CM7 and the original B&N android OS. Either way, I'm under the impression you have to re-flash the boot code every time you change the kernel, but I may be wrong.
I guess you can try without flashing the boot code, and see if it works. If not, just reboot with the card in and flash the boot. The great thing about the Nook is that it's pretty much brick-proof.

I'd better wait for someone for more clear instructions. Anyways thanks for replying

make sure you have the latest rom manager(4.5.0.1) you can update it from the market. While in the rom manger hit "flash clockworkmod recovery" select the nook color from the list, once you've done that you can go to "download rom" and download and flash the latest nightly.

Nook HD+ recovery loops, status 7 and so on

Hi there,
i'm having huge problems getting my HD+ fixed.
what happened: shut down out of nowhere, didnt boot the ROM, just TWRP recovery loops. Flashing and wiping did nothing good to the device. I always got errors when trying to install zips (data1 not found or something like this), but somehow the installation of CWM worked.
At the moment: CWM 6.0.4.5, when booting into recovery, under mounts/storage it says that system, data rom and bootdata arent mounted (but i can mount them from there).
trying to flash a new ROM or other zips doesnt work: Status 7.
I've read several threads over here, but I'm still confused and dont know how to save my HD+. Which exact files should i flash in which order? How to get rid of status 7?

That v6045 of CWM is causing the status 7 errors. You need an older version for older zips. Go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and make a bootable CWM SD per item 1a. Then you can flash whatever you want, including that plain stock zip from item 6.

I made a CWM SD as described. I put it into my HD+. But how do I avoid my Nook booting into the already-installed emmc-6.0.4.5? I rebooted it several times and always landed in the 6.0.4.5, so I assume i'm not in the SD-CWM which i desperately need. I also pushed "NookHDplus-CWM-6036-for-internal-memory-rev1-(09.22.13).zip" to the internal memory and tried to flash this, but no chance - status 7.
As I see it, the problem is to get into the older CWM-SD because the 6.0.4.5 won't let me install earlier CWMs (status 7)?

Can you boot 11? I have found my new nook won't boot from the SDcard unless I boot unmount the old card and mount the new one before booting.

When I installed CWM/CM the first time, I didnt have any problem with this, using the exact same hardware. Is it even possible to boot right from SD with my emmc-installed 6045, or is it just bad luck like those other guys in the thread mentioned?
Sideload doesnt work neither, CWM 6045 tells me to begin sideloading, but ADB gives me the whole "help"-listing instead (as if I used a wrong command or something: adb sideload filename.zip) of a working sideload-process. When I start sideload in CWM, "adb devices" gives me "host", dont know if this is good.

On my new replacement Nook I can't boot to any SDcards no matter if they are CWM or CM unless I boot into a working OS unmount the card I have in there eject it and put another one in while still booted then do a reboot it then boots every time off the new card.

Now the stock OS is installed. But I have problems getting into the SD-CWM. At the moment, it doesnt boot at all when the SD card is my Nook. Very strange behaviour.
I don't have a second SD-card, so I can't try that.

My Nook has Version 2.2 of B&N Software. I have to restore the Nook to get it to boot from SD Card. I am new so I am having issues finding the right combination of files to install the nightly build of CM11 without getting a status 7. There are so many builders and files on this forum and everything I have tested so far has been a no go. Can someone give me a specific set of files that will work with the nightly build of CM 11? It would be greatly appreciated!

- format SD card with SDFormatter
- set the only partition to "active" with MiniTool Partition Wizard
- "flash"/"burn" a bootable-CWM-image, for me it OINLY worked with "NookHDplus-bootable-CWM-6028-for-stock-small-rev4-(05.15.13).zip" (boots every time to SD-CWM, using the 4GB-version didnt work even after 30+ trys
- add your CM11-zip to the SD card using your windows explorer
- add flash_recovery_ovation_CWM_6.0.4.5b_internal.zip from http://goo.im/devs/succulent/ovation/recovery
- put it in your Nook, boot it up, if you're lucky you see CWM
- flash the 6.0.4.5b CWM, then you're ready to flash the newest CM11. If you want to flash an older version of CM such as 10.1 or 10.2, you need a lower CWM version to avoid status 7 errors.
- flash CM11
That was my way to CM11, but there is one huge problem at the moment: CM won't boot, it loops the CM-bootlogo infinitely. several wipes did nothing, still looping. My CWM always says on bootup that /system/ (besides others) isnt mounted, but I can mount them without a problem, flashing the CM-ROM doesnt produce errors.
I don't know how to avoid the CM bootlogo-loop

Had to reboot about 8 times to get my nook to read 32 gig SD card.

I had to reboot my nook at least 8 times to get it to read my SD card so I could install succulents 07FEB2014, using TWRP, because I was getting error 7 when installing via CWM.6.0.26 If I had known better, I would have copied the 07FEB2014 (stable) build to my internal memory and installed with TWRP from there. I somehow got into a loop where I could only boot into TWRP, finally being able to install seemed to fix this. I am loving the 07FEB2014 build. Keep up the good work gentle men and women! I really love this build.

[Q] Nook HD+ Install issue Status 7

Hi Guys, needing a bit of help to see if I can get my Nook HD+ back up and running.
A little background. Nook is 2013 model. Has worked pretty well in past, had added files last year to allow access to Play and flash, worked well, so I came back here when my nook went to the 99% reboot screen and has locked up there. B&N can't seem to help any. None of my computers will recognize the nook, so I can't sideload the NPK update that they said might fix the nook. So after laughing at their offer of an extra 10% off an ereader or the new Samsung, I decided to try changing to CM's Ovation. Have tried to follow Leapinlar's thread on installing CM and have tried 10.2,10.1 and a version of 11 along with another d/l of 10.2 from another poster.
I can boot from the SD card, but with really no currently working ROM, I need to use the install to internal version.
So I've used SD formatter on the SD card, copied over the files in order listed and then booted to the card.
Did a backup and restore, worked
did wipe data and factory reset
then install from sd card,
the system then gives me an error when installing the CM files:
Set_perm: some changes failed
E:Error in /sdcard/CM XXXX (no matter which CM I pick)
(status 7)
Installation aborted.
Any idea as to how I can resolve this?
I'm at a loss and can't find resolution.:crying:

What recovery exactly are you using to try and install CM? The one you boot from SD card? What version is it?
Some recoveries are too old to install CM11, for example. I suggest you install TWRP 2.7.1.0 as internal recovery on your Nook. You can download it here. Just put that TWRP zip file onto your bootable SD card, boot the HD+ and install the zip file. Then remove the SD card and format it, or use a different one that isn't bootable. Put the CM11 install zip file onto the card, insert it, and boot the internal recovery by holding the "N" button and powering up the tablet. Keep the N button pressed until the TWRP splash screen shows. If TWRP doesn't boot, then something went wrong. If it does boot, you can try and install CM11 with it.

So I've used SD formatter on the SD card, copied over the files in order listed and then booted to the card.
Did a backup and restore, worked
did wipe data and factory reset
then install from sd card,
the system then gives me an error when installing the CM files:
Set_perm: some changes failed
E:Error in /sdcard/CM XXXX (no matter which CM I pick)
(status 7)
Installation aborted.
Any idea as to how I can resolve this?
I'm at a loss and can't find resolution.:crying:

Yes, as the prior user said, you are using the wrong version of CWM to install the CM zip. CM10.1 and CM10.2 need v6028 or v6036. CM11 needs v6046. You can get them from the dummies thread linked in my signature.

I have tried to follow the thread instructions and used what appeared to be matching installers, if I didn't, I did see error for not matching. I'll go and try above recovery. Got to probably get another sd card.

Tried all three of these in that order. none worked. I'll go try above and see if it will work.
