I recently updated to Kit Kat and flashed latest firmware and radio. I'm having a problem where data seems to freeze and won't connect at times. I can see the 3G data up and down arrows trying to connect, but it just never makes a connection. I can go into airplane mode and then back to service and it connects right away, usually to LTE, so I'm thinking it has something to do with the switch from 3G to LTE. Super frustrating as I drive around the city a lot for work and sometimes data freezes for 15 minutes or more. Anyone having similar issues?

Same - Stuck on 3G for Data
I am having similar issue. I think it does have something to do with switching to LTE. My device now only really works with 3G. whenver i'm connected to lte no data is transfered but it says im connected and says data is transfering. I 've unfortunately resolved to just using 3G only. It's pretty sad. I went from a healthy use of data on 4G to barely using it. i think i had a few hundred KB this month. Any thoughts on how to fix this?
I also have this issue, it has been more and more prevalent lately. The phone will be working fine on 3G, then data freezes as it switches to 4G, maybe resumes for a split second, then switches back to 3G. Sometimes 3G doesn't even work then, sometimes it keeps looping between the two. It's ridiculously frustrating to be streaming music while driving and it just stops because it can't figure out which mode to be in.

I run CM7 nightlies on my Tmobile N1. Recently I killed my cable Internet/TV connection at home and have been using the built in WiFi tether for my home devices.
While it typically works great (for free), the data on my N1 will lock up. I have full 3G/HSDPA at my house. Using #*#*4636*#*# it states I am connected but fails to ping or load up any data on the phone or through its shared connection.
The only way to fix the problem is to toggle airplane mode and re-enable the WiFi Tether or sometimes a reset is required.
I've changed to several Gingerbread roms, flashed various radios, and even exchanged SIM cards.
Is this behavior normal or not? For regular web surfing I can live with it, but the main problem is that I cannot download anything without it getting interrupted (like updated nightlies or 50mb+ files).
Bumpity
No one has any problems with their WiFi sharing?
i used my phones internet as my regular home internet for a month. i used up about 25 gigs. i streamed videos, downloaded videos and podcasts with no interruptions. don't know what your problem could be. i was using cyan 6.1.1
I occasionally have experienced that issue, but it seems as if you have it much more frequently than I ever did. I would mainly get it when I tethered from areas with bad reception.
You state that you have full 3G/HSPA at your house. I am wondering how many bars of reception you happen to have. Also, try setting your phone to WCDMA Only in that 4636 menu. That seemed to decrease the frequency at which it happened for me.
I also found that once in a while, I could get tethered data working again by simply using the phone's native web browser to access any data. Good luck with the issue.

I typically have full bars of signal usually reading around -100dbm. When the internet drops, it drops completely; maps, browser, apps, etc all fail and I can't "jump start" it other then toggling airplane mode or resetting the phone. Typically a reset is best.
Perhaps I'll flash back to CM 6.1 and test it over the weekend. I'll do a backup of my current setup if things aren't fixed.
The purpose of this thread was simply to see if others have experienced the same issues and if it was worth "trying" to fix.
It might be a case of overheating device - it'll be good to test different ROMs and kernels.
I don't think the device is over heating at all rather then just a carrier issue. I flashed to CM 6.1.1 over the weekend and immediately found I was still having data issues (where it would work for like 5 minutes then drop out).
I did find that EDGE was a solid connection and stayed connected while I downloaded CM7 and GAPPS. I put a call into Tmobile and yacked at them for several hours. They escalated it up several times in their engineering department and so we'll see. I spoke to HTC a few times in there and they didn't think it was a handset problem either.
I guess we can close this thread as it doesn't seem to be a wide spread problem. I am running a stable version of CM7 now and we'll see.
@above: I have tested different radios, roms, and kernels. This thread started out as a issue with WiFi Tethering but ended up being the phone simply dropping its data connection. I originally was curious if this wifi sharing behavior was normal or not.

+1 for this part..
Sent from my Nexus One
Hello,
I have the following issue on ARHD 4.6, Plus network Poland. After booting or rebooting the 4G is always active, speeds are OK. After some 10-15 minutes of not using data connection, the phone switches to 3G and stays that way, when using data it goes to "H" (switching the airplane mode on and off doesn't help). I'would normally blame such things on the network, but every time I reboot the phone goes back to 4G and untill I keep using the data transfer, stays on 4G without any issues. Anyone else with same symptoms? You think I should push my network to solve this or is this rather radio related?
Thanks
Michal
Hey guys/gals -
I got my Moto-X a few weeks ago, and have been using it without issue on AT&T. Unfortunately, I'm just wrapping up my first trip through Europe with this phone (left my iPhone 5 at home), and I've noticed a very odd thing over the last week.
For some reason, my phone will not re-establish a cellular data connection once it has connected to WiFi (and subsequently disconnected from WiFi). I have noticed this - consistently - in both Germany and Italy. In all cases, once WiFi is no longer connected, I can see that the cellular data network is available (the 4G or E logo shows up, grayed out, next to the cell bars) but it will not reestablish. The only way to obtain a cellular data connection is to restart the phone.
I've tried going into airplane mode; I've tried cycling cellular data. Nothing I can think to try causes the cellular network icon ("4G" or "E") to cycle from gray to white...I simply cannot get back online without a full restart. But once I've restarted it works fine - so long as I don't jump on WiFi.
The phone isn't unlocked; it's an AT&T device, with no APN tweaks.
Anyone have any idea what could cause this behavior? Unfortunately, it's going to be another four or five weeks before I'm back here to test any ideas...but I figured I'd reach out while the issue is fresh.
Cheers.
Just to chime in, I've also seen this issue on mine, but it only happens with certain WiFi access points. After using the Cisco ones at work the problem occurs, but my Asus N66U doesn't seem to upset it.
Hi guys,
on my xt1068 (5.0.2 stock, no root, locked bootloader), 3g data always hangs when I'm travelling (e.g. Home -> Work). The only solution is to cycle the connection....
When I'm at home it works like a charm, even for an entire weekend
The mobile data icon remains "on", with full bars and H/3g symbol...but I cannot send or receive data.
Any ideas? As you understand this is really annoying. :silly:
Thanks.

I have the same problem but not all the time and I'm still on 4.4.4, I leave the house therefore disconnecting from WiFi sometimes 3G doesn't 'pickup' esp. if I turn off WiFi after it has moved out of range, like you it displays 3G or H but no data can be sent, the only way to fix it is rebooting the device.
Do you turn off WiFi manually after leaving the house? as mine only seems to do it if I do that.

Hmm, I always leave the WiFi on. I'm going back home atm and I just switched it off. Let's see if 3g stays active...(even if it would be the exact opposite behaviour than yours)
Thanks for the tip, I'll keep you posted.
I have this strange issue that has been with me almost since the beginning. I haven't been able to trace when it happens, but it now seems almost 100% of the time.
I only have WiFi in the house (wifi6, if it matters). If I go out, I only have 4G (I left only 4G and disabled 5G). I have no data until I put the phone into airplane mode and back, or I disable and re-enable mobile data.
Same thing when I go back in the house: no data until I disable and re-enable WiFi.
I've disabled the option for 'always-on mobile data' or similar, it's quite a battery drain if there's no cell signal.
Seems like a very strange bug, I don't have this with any of my other phones.
So you have both WiFi and 4G enabled and they don't switch seamlessly?
Exactly. I always have to restart each one of them, usually by toggling airplane mode. Was wondering if anyone else ran into this issue.
Ok this really is strange. There are 2(!) different toggles to enable data switching between WiFi and 4G, but for me it works flawlessly without them! As soon as I get out of my home WiFi range, 4G kicks in, and when I get in range again, the phone connects to my WiFi...
Hi, i have this problem too but it's not always.
I have a wifi 6 router too.
I also have problems switching from wifi to 4g. Need to toggle airplane mode on/off. 5g deactivated. No wifi 6 here.
I always assumed my vpn is causing problems during the switch to 4g. But hearing others have the same problem i would assume its zenfone problem.
I never had any issues in this area with my ZF8. With the option to have cellular always on I could walk out of my WiFi zone during a video call and no drop or short pause would appear.
With this off the network need a few second to work, and some apps need to be refreshed/restarted to gain connection. Never needed to toggle connection for this to work.
Maybe a reset would be enough or check for updates.
Ah, exactly! It does not necesarily need a network restart, but some apps just lose connection for a while, which can be from a few seconds to >1h. Which is even more weird as the icons are showing full connectivity. I would go out of the house, do stuff, come back later and I would only get the notifications when I'm back inside the house.
Rarely I had the connection drop completely (no signal) when switching, but I haven't noticed this happening since the last update.
