Hi, I've recently heard that AT&T has a way of now detecting if you're using a smartphone and will automatically bill you with a data plan if you dont already have one. I was wondering if rooting the phone would help bypass this cause my brother is using a jailbroken iphone without a data plan. Thanks guys!

to accomplish this you would have to get involved in much more complicated and nefarious things than just rooting your phone.
This forum is not the place for it, so for you the answer is no.
It is not so much they can detect a smartphone, but they can detect the type of phone, iPhone, Captivate, etc. If these are on the smartphone list, they will add a dataplan if you don't have one - or if you have the wrong type.
You can't change this -when the phone is on the network, it broadcasts information about itself - rooting doesn't change this.
AT&T has millions of subscribers and this information probably has to be mined out of a data base - pull list of all smarthpones seen on the network in the past X days; check all accounts related for data plans, etc. They probably have a bunch of older unconnected systems too. So, it may not happen the first day you connect or even 3 months later, but at some point they will figure it out.
Its true. Before I got my fiance her iphone 3gs, she had a blackberry pearl without data and a few months before she switched they added data to our bill unexpectedly and wouldn't let us drop it.

i dont get why someone buys a 500 dollar phone if they are too cheap to get the datra plan with it.
I could understand if you got a blackjack, but come on now....

I think some people are convinced they are near wifi all day and don't want to waste the money on data they won't use.. But they do have that 200MB plan for $15 - i think it is overpriced - should be $5 - but if you buy a smartphone you should be ready to add a data plan.
If you don't want to add data, get a dumb phone and ipod Touch.
I work for AT&T so I'll give you some inside info. The phones have a sim registration program that talks to the local server through the towers. Within 60 seconds of your phone being turned on it tells the network what kind of phone it is. It can tell the network the make/model but not the IMEI. If it could detect the IMEI then stolen phones would pretty much be useless. The only way around the forced data plan is to have a tag on your account for "smartphone exclusion". Everyone got this tag in September 2009 so we could all be grandfathered with no data plans. When you upgrade to a new phone with a 2yr agreement it removes the tage automatically. But if you buy your own smartphone, this tag allows you to keep data removed if you dont want it. Or in my case it allows me to have a samsung captivate with the $10 family data unlimited plan for dumbphones. The network knows I have a captivate but it cant force the data plan because I have "smartphone exclusion". You can go to a local AT&T store and see if someone is willing to tell you if you have this tag. If you don't have it then it is pretty much impossible to get it. And no I can't add it for you. Hope that helps.
Actually the IMEI is reported when the phone talks to the network. It is part of the GSM protocol. Europe enforces a ban on stolen phones via IMEI. American carriers just dont seem interested in banning stolen phones as they would rather have the revenue and not turn off the ebay buyer.

while this is true at&t actually uses the IMSI on the SIM to do its dirty work. Also the captivates ONLY transmit the IMSI while on 3G (reduces over head for more throughput on EDGE) which is why the option to force 2G is hidden on the captivate.

I've been with AT&T since before 2009, does this mean I'll automatically have the tag? And how would I know if my account has this tag or not?

Do you mean buying your own smartphone outside of AT&T? I currently have the $10 unlimited data plan for my "dumbphone". Talking to AT&T indicated there was no way to keep the existing data plan and I've have to move to one of the 2 new plans if I got the Captivate.

I would be interested in this simply because i want unlimited data. Hell i would pay the extra 5 bucks if they would let me in on the unlimited smartphone plan but it seems like fooling their network would be an easier task lol. Also i have had my sim for over 2 years now and they still were able to change me from the dumbphone plan to the smartphone one.
Ok, I've got a decision to make. I'm currently under a TMO loyalty family plan but the family member has recently decided to stop paying for the account. I have the option....
A: to do an acceptance of responsible and take over my single account allowing me to keep my number along with the phones contract.
B: I could open my own TMO account, no contract, which means I get a new number. The payment for that bill would be about $92 a month including taxes.
C: I could also open a TMO account, on contract, and get myself something new like a tab. (I have 14 days to get something) I'll just use the G2 instead of the tab. With a monthly bill a little over $100
D: My last option is leave TMO and get a sprint account with the same family member that is dropping TMO and join their family plan which is only $37 a month.
What would you do?
You could always open a new account and keep your same number, trust me, it's very possible.

They told me I couldn't. I know they lie but what can I possibly do besides say your wrong. Its the TMO Rep vs. Me. The rep said the only way to open a new account and keep the number is to pay to end the contract early.

Damn, I did it a different way (Keep my old number) so you're probably right. I just started a new contact and asked if I could keep my number. You could always raise hell, I've seen people get free **** that way haha but then again you also take the risk of getting tazed and dragged out by the police or security.
-If ignorance is bliss why aren't you smiling?-
You can keep your number if you pay for the bill a month after the 2 yr contact ends,
I work at a AT&T store and this is what we tell customers who want to port over to use but are still in a contact with another carrier and do not want to pay the early termination fess.
You would be doing is paying for a month after the 2 yr contact ended so the number is still yours, and you can port it over without a early termination fee.
In the long run, its always best to have your own account. Just saves trouble with other account holders. Just my personall experience.

As long as the downsides of being on a CDMA network instead of a GSM one aren't an issue for you (as they aren't for me, basically) then I'd say Sprint is fairly decent.
Of course, there is a $10/mo charge to anyone for having data on their plan. It's the same $10/extra you pay if you get a 4G phone. But, of course, as you and everyone else on here probably know, Sprint's 4G service coverage pretty much sucks right now.
Sprint's cheaper than Verizon, and really only TMo is cheaper than Sprint (though that's a relative statement because it depends on what you've got and all that jazz). Vis a vis phone numbers, if I were you I'd get someone to invite you to Google Voice and then switch everyone over to that number, then you really don't have to care in the future what your *actual* voice number is.
U can convert ur line to a prepaid plan.... 50/month ftw! !! Source.... ME ;D

Dude im in the same situation as you. I'm on a family plan also with a family member who decided to download over $200 worth of paid apps on his samsung vibrant. And decided he wasn't paying so our phones got shut off and he switched over to Verizon and got the same type of phone Samsung Fascinate...And since i lost my job i had to pretty much sell some of my stuff to come up with the money for our cell phone bills. But now that i got it all paid down. I got a offered that idk if i should take. My best friend is on Sprint on a family plan and for only $50/month Ill have 1500 minutes unlimited text, internet with the HTC Evo. but idk if its worth it to switch.

Good to know!
I don't have issues with my amount of data... I'd rather pay less for the same amount of data I have now. Does anyone know if that would be possible? I'm guessing they'd rather not let me decrease my monthly bill though..

Thanks a bunch for the heads up! Will definitely be taking advantage of this tomorrow to go from 2GB to 4GB
I got my 5GB. Site is live.
how do you go from 2 to 4 gigs if your an existing customer, their site says it's for new lines, or upgrades
I went to check if it was an available option and no luck... above the data plan selection area, it does say that you can do it for a limited time, but I only see the normal options and prices.

How do alternative options for a hotspot compare to the official hotspot?
So I can I get double unlimited data lol

Android Central posted details about this with an indirect sales slide. One of the bullet points said:
"4G LTE Smartphone customers who make a price plan change or an ESN change during the promotional period will be asked to select one of the promotional options."
The way I'm reading that is, If you upgrade to any 4G phone during the promotion period you will be asked to choose one of these tired plans and lose unlimited data.
This wouldn't be the first time Verizon has done something like this. I wouldn't be surprised if they say that the RAZR, Nexus, and Rezound are not compatible with the unlimited data package.
I've never been on the "personal email" option -- always had work paying for it and had the corp email and hotspot. Can someone with a regular data account (i.e., personal email, not corporate) tell me whether there is any restriction on data activities with one of these "regular" plans? Other than tethering, I mean. Like, can I still use the regular email app and all my other good stuff?
Thanks, and sorry for the noob question. On ATT, I never worried about this stuff. (Turns out that was the only plus about ATT, but I digress.)

Go to VerizonWireless.com and log in. After login, go back to the splash page. Click on the link I highlighted in green on the first pic, below. It will show you the details.
Then, go to the link highlighted in pink in the second pic. That will show you everything on your account and allow you to change plans.
Hope this helps.

Actually I think this is Verizon testing the waters and trying to find middle ground between unlimited and their current offers. Everyone and their mothers are flocking to Sprint because of their unlimited data, albeit they have issues of their own. If this experiment goes well this may end up being their new tiered plans or they may extend the promotional period. Verizon is not looking to stick their unlimited users, they've moved on. It's all about the next dollar. Now that at&t is deploying LTE they need to separate themselves from the pack.

Currently, you can only activate a sprint framily at a sprint retail store and does not apply for existing sprint members under contract.
You can buy a new sprint phone or active an existing sprint phone... in my case, I've purchased an sprint iPhone off ebay with clean ESN...and had no issues with activation. I do need to pay an $ 39 activation fee and the first bill is still $ 55. + Tax, ( as they will adjust the new rate based on next billing cycle )

Im looking for unlimited. Doesn't matter if it's 3g or 4g either should work for me so long as it's really unlimited without throttling. Id hate spend 500+ for a bogus unlimited account.
