Is there an actual harmful effect on a Li battery caused by the magnet in a leather case?
I have a leather case for my Z1 and I want to use it but I won't use it if the magnet in the lock is going to knacker the non removable battery.
Sent using my Z1 & Tapatalk 2 and not that abortion of a XDA premium app that I paid for and now shames the community it serves.....
The active ingredients in a Li-Ion battery are Lithium and Carbon. Lithium itself is an alkali metal, and is not magnetic, therefor adding a magnetic charge to it will not do anything. The Carbon inside a Li-Ion battery is Propylene carbonate, which is an organic carbon mixture, and is classified under low grade magnetic field. This means that any consumer grade magnet won't affect it.
If you're near high powered chemical magnets or industrial applications of magnets for scientific testing, then you may have an issue, however most laboratories don't allow electronic devices inside a controlled environment.
Any Neodymium magnet you throw at your phone, those are the silver, powerful "rare earth" magnets, or lesser powerful magnet found in most fridge magnets and wallets/cases, won't affect your phone in a negative way.

I am glad the source is reliable but the phone it self contains metal parts and use magnets around can influence the phone reception and even if this is not harmful to my phone I will avoid magnetic contact anyway.

His question was about the battery.. not the other parts of the phone.
Even still, the phone is magnetically shielded.
Unless you're around extremely powerful magnets, such as working in science labs and/or electromagnets in junk yards, you don't need to worry about the tiny extremely weak magnet in the case.

Again.. he is not asking about the LCD.. he is asking about the Battery.
LCD screens are not affected by any source of magnetism either. If they were then cases like these wouldn't be on the market.
Things like these also wouldn't be backed by large companies or be so successful:
http://www.niteize.com/product/Steelie-Car-Mount-Kit.asp
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/studioproper/wallee-m-modular-magnetic-phone-mounting-system
Lets not forget that the phone itself has a magnet on the side of the device and a smaller magnet on the cable for the magnetic charging port. If you know anything about physics you'll know a current runs through the USB cable when it's charging the phone, which also doesn't affect it.
Holding a magnet up to an unshielded SnapDragon or whatever, or the mainboard, then yes, but these phones have aluminium shielding.
I don't really mean to revive an old thread, but I'm about to attach some rare earth magnets to my ravpower QI charger with an external battery. I'm assuming my external battery is lithium-ion based. I want to spread out the magnets so my phone can properly attach to it, but I wanted to make sure everything is fine first.
I googled another forum that explained that using magnets with lithium ion cells can potentially cause a dead-short.
"side impact will cause magnet to shift and possibly bridge to ground causing a dead short. a very bad thing to do with a li-ion cell. this could lead to venting with flames!"

***If this does not belong here I appologize, and feel free to move this if necessary. I just figured the development community is most likely to take this "upgrade" on***
After seeing that someone used Palm's wireless charger on their non-palm phone; I decided to put one on my Droid Incredible.
***This was done to a completely stock Dinc. I did not use any special back, and the stock back gets to stay on (unlike in the other video that I saw)
Wireless Charging the Droid Incredible
**Disclaimer: This will void your warranty, and if you solder something wrong will probably break your phone. With that said I can in no way be held accountable for anything that occurs while performing this “upgrade” to your phone.
>>>>If anyone knows where I can buy that little void sticker that you will see in a picture below, please let me know! If we can get that sticker then our warranty is not voided by doing this.
Supplies:
1.Palm touchstone charger http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/handheld/categories/palm/4/accessories/FB300AA%23AC3
2.Palm touchstone phone back http://www.shopping.hp.com/store/product/product_detail/FB306AA%23AC3?
3.Micro USB cable
4.Soldering Iron (the finer the tip on this the better)
5.Torx T6 screw driver
6.Safe pry tool (or a small flat head screwdriver)
7.Very tiny insulated wires (I just pulled mine out of a USB cable that I cut up)
8.Electrical Tape
9.[Optional] Multimeter to test that you actually made a good connection
How To (Images are of a higher quality (12mp) so I had to stick them in zip files to get them on here):
1.The palm touchstone phone back has a sticker inside of it that encases the wireless charging receiver, so you need to peel this off. Once it is peeled off it will look like this (without the wires soldered onto it):
(Images can be seen in: Palm Receiver.7z)
2.Remove the battery cover and the battery then unscrew the back from your phone (please view a tare down video for details, there are plenty of them on you tube that I used for a reference.)
1.All you need is a torx t6 screwdriver and a safe pry tool, I used a small flat head screwdriver and it worked just fine. Unscrew the 4 screws around the sides and then carefully pry off every place that the battery cover clips on, as they also hold on the red back.
(Images can be seen in: Dinc Inside.7z)
3.Solder on some wires to the USB connector as shown in the below image without soldering onto the pins next to them. This is difficult and takes some time and patience, since these connectors are very small and close (note the polarity in the image, notated in red).
A.Also it is necessary to place a piece of electrical tape over the components right next to the connector (Green box in the image) as they will short out the power and make it impossible to charge your phone if you do not (I found that out the hard way and went back and fixed it).
B.One final note here is that I had to melt down the red phone backing inside to allow the cables to get past the case. See the green rectangle in the image above for where I had to do that. I just used my soldering iron and melted it down, it makes a pretty nice indention for the wires to fit through.
(Images can be seen in: Dinc USB.7z)
4.Now push out the rubber plug in the red phone backing next to the USB cover (this is encircled in Green in the image from step 2).
A.Run the cables that you just solder on through that so that they are sticking through to the battery compartment on your phone.
B.You can also stick on the palm receiver to the inside of your phone cover (note the direction and placement, as this is necessary to close your cover).
3.Note that I placed electrical tape over the wires. This was necessary to keep them from breaking off of the USB connector since the solder points are so small.
(Images can be seen in: Almost Done.7z)
5.Solder on the wires to the palm charger receiver and you are done. Now you just need to carefully place the wires towards the middle of the phone so that you can close the back of your phone entirely (this is another reason why the wires need to be small).
A.Note the polarity of the connection.
B.Also I put a piece of electrical tape over the connections on the palm charger receiver to protect them (not shown in the image).
(Images can be seen in: Wireless Charger.7z)

Sounds really nice. Not gonna try it with mine because I'm too scared
Though shouldn't this be in accessories or general?
What are you doing to align the coils? My biggest concern that's kept me from this is the magnets also would mess up the compass sensors readings which I for one actually value.
Wow, you managed to bring me out of my months of silence in posting...
I feel honored that I can get you out of your months of silence
The coil alignment is handled by the magnets inside of the palm touchstone charger itself (the base unit that plugs into the wall). The metal objects that you can see in the "Palm Receiver.7z" file are actually not magnets, but small circular pieces of metal that get pulled towards the charger base when you get them close to each other. So when you have the phone off of the charger, there are no magnets to mess with anything
Also you will notice that there is a piece of metal behind the coil, and that seems to block the inductive signal all together (because I tried to put it on backwards to no avail). Therefore your phone is mostly protected from the inductive transmission.
The only thing that I noticed, is that the touchscreen on the phone is a little weird when it is on the charger, but I see the same side effects when plugging the phone into a "non-htc" charger (before performing this "upgrade"). **I also saw this on my Moto Droid when connecting it to a 1 amp charger, and I have seen this with multiple other touchscreen devices so I think it just has something to do with the frequency of the charger.
Also in case of any concerns: MY PHONE HAS IN NO WAY BEEN DAMAGED BY THIS "UPGRADE"

Yup.... The ones yoe momma told ya about.... Bad Seed Customs!!
I think you will be ok if it is one of those thin (about 1mm thick) rubber cases. Anything thicker than that and you would probably have to install the wireless receiver on the case itself and remove your battery cover all together.
I tested a thin rubber case that I have (no more than 1mm thick I think) that fits a Droid Eris and it charges as long as its flush to the back of my phone.

Wow, this is amazing, very well done. I think this is the first hard mod I've heard of for an Android. I guess gold cards were a sorta gray area.
I've had my Incredible modded to work with a Touchstone since around June of last year. It works great, but I must caution anyone thinking of doing this to be VERY careful. Experience with soldering and a steady hand is a must. One could fairly easily mess up their phone attempting to do this.
Could you do this with a powermat if you wanted to? I have a few laying around I could use.

No, the transmission of data wirelessly is achieved through modulated EM waves. This is simple inductance: a changing electric field creates a magnetic field, a changing magnetic field generates an electric field, so a current carrying loop placed near another loop of wire will induce current in the other loop. The receiver in the phone is engineered to "create" the "proper" amount current to charge your battery when combined with the base. In theory yes, but not with this equipment.
How does the phone treat a USB cable being plugged in - will it charge ok, and have your data transfer rates been adversely effected? I wouldn't think so, since you're only touching the power...

I have used the USB charger and data transfer cables without any problems at all. Also I have copied some files off of my phone to my PC since the "upgrade" and did not notice any extended times or anything that would remotely make me think something was wrong.
I did not run a speed test before and after to see if anything slowed down, but as you said we are only touching the power pins, so I highly doubt anything has changed.

I was bored on a long weekend and decided that the universal car mounts with the arms (you know the ones I'm talking about - these pieces of junk http://i.imgur.com/f2zZcCs.jpg ) plus the necessity of plugging the phone in manually was ENTIRELY too much trouble.
Ok, not really... but that was my excuse for putting together a little DIY project!
It turns out that the LG WCP-300 wireless qi charger fits perfectly inside a gutted Schosche Vent Mount (this guy: http://i.imgur.com/rRpZO78.jpg ). I had to cut out quite a bit of little plastic pieces, but the charger is held very securely once the mount is gutted.
Next, I bolted a secure, flat platform to my A-pillar trim piece (the pillar to the left of the windshield) and mounted a flexible arm suction cup mount.
From there, I hard-wired a 2amp usb charger using a fuse-tap and ran the cable up through the dash and out between the A-pillar trim piece and the dashboard. This cable is plugged into the wireless qi charger.
So now, when I get in the car, I just set my phone on the charger, the magnets hold it securely in place, and it charges wirelessly!
It's totally awesome and is definitely the most expensive car mount I've ever had - but it's SO cool!
Total cost: Around $40 for the mount, another $40 for the LG WCP-300 wireless charger.

I purchased some neodymium rare earth magnets from Home Depot. Not sure of the exact ones, but the ones on the phone mount are fairly large, while the ones inside the case are, by necessity, much smaller.
There are no magnets in the WCP-300 - I found that putting magnets on it - at least in my case - made charging not as consistent. It may have just been some other factor during my testing, but there you have it. The magnets are around the WCP-300 and around the wireless charging coils in the phone itself (I popped off the cover attempting to place the magnets inside the phone initially).
Hopefully that answers your question!

Great questions. The ONLY thing they interfere with is the compass... the phone always thinks it's pointing north. However, I only use navigation, and direction is determined by GPS, not by compass, so I don't notice the difference.

well i dont know the physics behind very well, but i think when bad things come together and somebody uses a very heavy magnet the induction voltages could outrage and lead to misbehavior or destruction. but it seems like the have to be really strong to do even little damage.
But neodym magnets can of course cause severe damage to other sensors or metallic parts in the cellphone. Like the vibrator e.g. ... :silly: i think as long as the magnetic fields arent moved with high speeds nothing should happen to the flash memories.
the car interior wasnt destroyed ? didnt you cut or screw the A-pillar of the car ? ....

Not sure how magnets affect the phone in the long run (so far, nothing out of the ordinary), but I guess I'll be the pioneer and let y'all know if something goes wrong!
Im looking for a holster, i found some but most have a magnetic closure. Im not sure if its ok for our phones so i just wantes your thoughts or experience with it. I use samsung pay every day and i dont want any sensor to be off because of the magnets.
Maybe im a little paranoid over it because it probably takes an extremely powerful magnet to cause any harm but im not willing to test it out lol
None of the magnetic items for the phones will cause any harm to your phone.
You may notice that the stylus doesn't work where the magnet is, but it will work just fine when you move the magnet.
As a Samsung Experience Consultant, I do not recommend anything magnetic, I think they mess with the device internals.

You think or you know?
You should only be putting out info if you know. If you don't know, and it is clear you don't, then you should not speak on a subject.
Magnets will in no way harm the phone unless you are using super powerful magnets, what you use to hold the phone to a dock and things like that won't bother it in the least bit.
I do not recommend any of the Samsung Flip Cases to customers because I have seen them cause problems with devices before. I do not recommend magnetic closures because I have seen them cause problems with devices.

I'm not sure if this is specifically what you're asking about, but I've been using a Scosche MagicMount (http://amzn.com/B00I608BJ8) for my car dash and love it! I lay the larger metal plate (it comes with two sizes) at the bottom of my case, oriented where the longer sides are parallel to the bottom of the phone (let me know if you need a picture). I don't stick the plate to my phone, but rather set it inside my case. It turns out to be the perfect length and height for the Note 5. Wireless charging and Samsung Pay still work great. I used that picture of the Note 5 where someone made the back of transparent to make sure the wireless charging coil inside the phone does not over lap with the metal plate that comes with the mount.
I bought a nice leatherette case for my Note 5 only to find that the S-Pen does not work on the right hand side where the magnet is. I took it off immediately and went back to my Body Glove case.

Like I said. "Magnets will in no way harm the phone"
This isn't harming your phone, it does do as you have seen which is a TEMPORARY issue and has already been discussed, it will cause no permanent harm to the phone.
I don't know about magnetic holsters but magnetic car mounts most definitely YES. I've used many holsters over the years, for all kinds of types of phones. I haven't really thought about it till I saw this post. My buddy has a good magnetic car mount for his s7 edge, but I don't really know anyone at the moment that's using a magnetic holster. Just my opinion though, the last time I used a holster was way back in January and it was actually pretty good. It was a best buy branded platinum, with kickstand holdster and case like a 3 in kind of deal but not magnetic. It fit could on my belt clips for my jeans and suit pants. Good luck
bought the Bracketron brand at best buy, the magnetic part is on the mount, it is a metal plate stick to your phone so no interference from the magnet, not owning a note 5 tho.
I put in some small tin paper cutouts INSIDE my note 5. I took the back cover off, peeled the sticker with the color/logo and spraypainted it a nice black then just glued the tin paper inside of that. Then I took a flat wireless charger and added neodymium magnets to it, modded it to be as small/thin as possible then covered it up with some black thin leather I bought from Michaels. I mounted it up to my car's console and now I just plop the phone onto it and it sticks tight and fast charges, no wires or case. Worked perfectly, but in hot weather the leather would become a bit slippery so it would slip off, but I fixed that with a couple of very small circular double sided gel tape on the bottom just to provide a bit of friction. I've ridden like this for the past 5 or 6 months and it doesn't slip or fall off at all, heavy bumps, hot weather, nothing dislodges it.
The only thing that doesn't work is the spen, and that's only directly over the magnets, but I wouldn't write on it anyway while it was mounted. Otherwise I've had zero difficulties with it. I'll post up pics if anyone is interested, but it's a bit frankenstein looking.
I know this is a longshot due to the relatively small number of accessories, but I'm looking for a case that somehow covers the charging port. After a lot of reading about how the phone is actually waterproof despite the lack of ip68 rating, I plan to take it surf fishing with me. I'm not going to dunk it in saltwater or unnecessarily expose it to waves and spray. I am worried about sand, which tends to get everywhere including all over the inside of my car. The salty air tends to make the sand stick to everything and I don't want to get it into the charging port and have it break something while plugging/unplugging the charger. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't seen one that covers all the ports. Like you said the selection is kind of limited for smaller "niche" types of phones such as the compact. The only thing I know of that will protect all the ports and also make the phone waterproof is the Armor X Soft Case. Doubt it's what your looking for but it might be something right up your alley. https://www.armor-x.com/ag-w1-z5-sony-xperia-waterproof-soft-case-cover-for-x-xa-performance-compact.html
Thanks. I have one of those already. The problem with those is all the fumbling around opening and closing the pouch.
Actually I'm highly confident that the xc is waterproof. But like I said I'm worried about grinding sand into the charging port and wrecking something. .
Nillkin has one that covers charging port. I bought mine on ebay for 5€. Check it
hey everyone ,
i have a very curious question , why many and many aren't cover the magnetic pins and let it exposed , it's rare to find a cover that covers this area as well
so why is that ? is it because it will weaken the magnetic or something or just a random no reason for that ?
thanks in advance
I've wondered the same thing. Since the Mods require physical connection to the pins, and a case will add thickness to the back, preventing them from touching, it makes no sense to me for the pins to be exposed. Especially when they run the risk of being damaged.
But then, why do so many iPhone cases have a cutout for the Apple? Probably just to show off.

If it was to Show off with pins this will be weird ???
I would assume they did it solely because they didn't want to cover any connection and not because they understood that it would be better if they covered it to protect the mods. Probably got a specification and just did something similar to what they do with other devices and leave connectors uncovered.
I think this is probably the correct answer. Pretty much all cases available at launch were like this. I'm sure Lenovo just sent out a CAD file to manufacturers but didn't want to give away how Mods actually work, so case designers just generated a cut-out in their CAD file like they usually do without putting any additional thought to it (or thought about it hard, but had to have a product ready for distribution and couldn't afford to hold it back for an explanation).
I've heard somewhere that it was for the pins to release their heat after using a mod for a long period.
Maybe some manufacturer or even Lenovo would make a passthrough adapter for Moto mods, hence the pins are left uncovered.
Then again not likely as thickness and clearance would still be a problem as most cases and covers aren't uniform.Would still be cool though
My two cents here.
Seems like if they cover them and some foreign material got behind the case and the pins, it could short out the pins and potentially cause all kinds of issues. Worst being melting the case or starting a fire. That's my guess
