I'm a noob to Motorola, just rooted my X last night(had to wait because I accepted the OTA). I'm on Verizon/locked bootloader and I'm not sure how to go about installing recovery/ROM. I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere but could someone point me in the right direction, maybe a tutorial on what to do. Thanks! Comments are always appreciated!

you cannot unless you bought the developer edition. You have a locked bootloader.
What's the perk of rooting the phone then?

Being able to do many more things than a non rooted phone.
Like uninstalling/freezing bloatware, backing up app data via TiBu or other app, enabling free wireless tethering, and so on. There is more you can do of course, but to me personally, those are the big three things I can't live without on a phone.
Thanks for the info! So basically I'm just waiting for someone to figure out how to unlock the bootloader before I can start flashing ROMs?

You best best is to do some research on using SafeStrap. The odds of a bootloader unlock coming about for the Moto X are very slim to none is my guess.
Thanks for the tip!

agreed about BL. But there are some rumors that jcase and teamirc might be working on something. A post a day or two ago led to some speculation that they may have found a BL unlock but it is highly speculative. The pledge thread is up to almost 1200 so there is at least some incentive. And being the second security team to crack a moto BL might be a pretty big deal for jcase and teamirc but we will see.

SS has been able to do custom roms for some time now, but nothing is really out for the moto x yet besides the vzw rom that allowed you to have the new OTA without having to take it and lock your BL from downgrading back to stock original FW. Some things may be out in the future, but because devs are finding it difficult to keep active notifications and touchless controls because moto isn't giving them access to what they need to incorporate it, it might be less likely that many roms come out because so many people like those aspects of the phone.

I recently ordered a GSM unlocked moto x from motomaker and I was wondering if the gem unlocked version's boot loader is unlockable. I plan to get a sim card from T-Mobile soon, if that info is useful at all. Thanks in advance guys!

Yes, it is unlockable: I just did mine this evening! However, it will void the warranty..but hey, I sometimes live dangerously.

How did you unlock it? And was it on android 4.4?
More than likely it still comes with 4.2. You unlock it by visiting Motorola Unlock Bootloader page. It lists all the steps needed. Simple process, should take no more than 10 minutes.
Btw, the T Mobile Moto maker version comes with a T Mobile SIM inside already. Just has to be activated.

Correct on both!
I unlocked first before taking the OTA to 4.4.

Forgive me for being such a newbie, but if you unlocked it while it was 4.2.2, and updated it to 4.4, it remains unlocked? And what do you plan to do now that you've unlocked it?
It remains unlocked regardless of which version. Now that you are unlocked. You may install TWRP and superSU. To gain root privileges and get xposed framework with gravity box. Which remains the best combo so far for most who have rooted and are on 4.4.

I reinstalled mine so no can do, it might not have been 4.4.2 exactly but I know it was at least 4.4 for sure.
More than likely 4.4, we are all awaiting the arrival of 4.4.2 and a better camera though.

Is that expected to change any time soon? I know in the past the dev community has had these things hacked apart like 24 hours after launch. We're now months into the launch of the Moto X and we only recently even got root. So I guess my question is twofold:
1. Is there a reason that the Moto X has proven so darned hard to unlock?
2. What are the limitations of having a locked (but rooted) device as far as custom ROMs, kernels, bootloaders, recoveries, etc.? Coming from a Galaxy Nexus that I was able to fully unlock and root on day one, I have no idea what's accessible via rooting vs. via unlocking. It all just kind of felt the same to me.
N00b questions I know, but I'd really like to know what I can and can't do with this VZW Moto X of mine.

All I can say is the Bionic and Galaxy S4 both on VZW have not been unlocked and never will be.
Either buy the overpriced Dev edition or the unlockable gsm version... when it is discounted again.

Hi all. So I bought a Moto X developer edition. Of course has bootloader unlocked. Question I have is regarding root. All i have to do is install custom recover and from there install supersu? Even if I have the 4.4.2? If i install the 4.4.3 update before rooting, same steps? Thanks.

I have a (sort of) similar question: I've read that Samsung S5's dev edition won't receive regular OTA updates. My friend has this phone but wants the DE and is concerned that it also won't get the OTAs. Is that accurate? I saw that the OP asked about 4.4.3 so I'm assuming that this will be updated as often as the non-DE, correct? Thank you in advance!
Yup same method I used philz touch recovery flashed SuperSU then went to Philz Setting and chose fix root.

And you didn't read the part just above that! Take a look closely at the UNLOCKED bootloader section... as it says...
"Don't know if your bootloader can be unlocked? See Post 70"
If you followed that advice, you'd have had your answer and not needed to ask the question.
It contains a little background so you can understand, then a link/info to Moto's site which has pretty much the same info/steps in the link @Megatron007 supplied to unlock the bootloader... and even says how to root after you've unlocked the bootloader.
Hi Everyone I'm New In Xda Forums So Plz Forgive If Ask Anything Stupid,
I Have Motorola G 1st Gen xt1033 Asia retail Version, With Updated Android to Lollipop 5.0.2.
I've Been Trying for a year to root My Phone But I Cant root it I really need help, main thing is I can't unlock bootloader When I Use Fastboot OEM unlock It GivesbMe A Five Lines Code That I Copy and Paste To Official Motorola Website in which it has a button saying "can I unlock my device" but then the websites sends a msg "your device does not qualify to unlock bootloader" And that's it in stuck here ,I can't get the unlock code to unlock it so I also used kingroot ,frameroot, kingo root, iroot, rootmaster, and many more apps that says you can root without PC , but non of them worked , Plz I really want to root my phone.
Thanks And Sorry For My Bad English Skills
Your going to want to look in the Moto g 1st Gen forums. This Is for the 2014 version. It's just Moto g. Also you just unlock the bootloader then flash twrp. After that push super su to your internal storage and reboot into twrp. Then flash super su (with twrp) and your good to go

Hey I Saw A thread today, there is a tool for xt1033 to downgrade or update the bootloader. If I downgrade my bootloader or upgrade it. Maybe I'll be able to unlock the bootloader , am I right?

Idk I'm not a developer. More of a technology enthusiast. I wouldn't risk it. If it doesn't work your phone won't even boot into fastboot mode. It would become a paper weight. Unless you don't really care about losing your phone, then I'd go for it
