I have the moto x at&t carrier version. My question is if I was to root the device is there a method to unroot it so I can accept ota's since I can't unlock the boot loader? Thanks for any replies..

You can flash stock based ROMs (Eclipse, Krypton) with safestrap if you are rooted and have write protection disabled. But you will need to update the kernel and baseband to the 4.4.2 versions. See instructions on how to do that here: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/116025-romsafestrap-unlockedxt1060-stock-rooted-vzw-164552-kitkat-442/. You can also look in to unlocking your bootloader via the guy in China. That would allow you to flash AOSP based ROMs. See thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/china-middleman-t2751177
Thank you so much. I've tried the Chinese man but my phone is a 2013 build and he didn't have it
Also by flashing 4.4.2 like this I will keep the write protect bypass right?

Correct. I was lucky enough to get my bootloader unlocked the first time around but before that I used this method and it worked great.

I think it should work if you flash the att safestrap patch located in the krypton thread in the XDA dev section.

Hi all. So I bought a Moto X developer edition. Of course has bootloader unlocked. Question I have is regarding root. All i have to do is install custom recover and from there install supersu? Even if I have the 4.4.2? If i install the 4.4.3 update before rooting, same steps? Thanks.

I have a (sort of) similar question: I've read that Samsung S5's dev edition won't receive regular OTA updates. My friend has this phone but wants the DE and is concerned that it also won't get the OTAs. Is that accurate? I saw that the OP asked about 4.4.3 so I'm assuming that this will be updated as often as the non-DE, correct? Thank you in advance!
Yup same method I used philz touch recovery flashed SuperSU then went to Philz Setting and chose fix root.

Yep, we had suspected that 4.4.3 patched the exploits. We pretty much KNOW that 4.4.4 is completely immune to them. It was worth a shot though... :/
Thanks for the confirmation. Just for reference, which variant do you have?

You -could- attempt to downgrade, but realize that it is NOT ADVISED, and you CAN/WILL Likely brick your device, either now or in the future.
If I can't talk you out of it, whatever you do, DO NOT flash gpt.bin or motoboot.img from the 4.4.2 SBF.
If you downgrade anyways (ignoring our advice) and it works, realize that if you accept an OTA in the future, you will likely brick at that point.
If you are successful, you probably will be able to root using the new exploit, but DO NOT recommend other users to do it! (You don't want to be responsible for others' bricking their devices, right?)
[End Rant]
Good Luck.
thanks man I just did some reading on the xt1053 model the boot loader was not updated from 4.4.2 -4.4.3 so I feel I am safe trying this for now

Even so, DON'T flash gpt.bin from the 4.4.2 SBF
DON'T use RSD-LITE (it WILL attempt to flash gpt.bin)
And don't say I didn't warn you.

Dude!!!! I wish I noticed this earlier, but if you have an XT1053, (and not XT1058), you can UNLOCK the BOOTLOADER, for FREE on Motorola's Website!!!
Unlocking the BL is far superior to -any- of these 'exploits'. It will allow you to have PERMANENT root, even on the latest (and future) updates.
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
Gosh, I hope you didn't actually try to downgrade.....if you did try, you should download the ENTIRE 4.4.3 SBF, flash back to 100% stock 4.4.3, and unlock your BL. Then flash TWRP custom recovery, and it will root your device for you. Its that easy.
Write protect will be disabled too! So you can write to /system, and root will be persistent. (You DON'T get that using any of the exploits)
Good Luck!!! :good:

bootloader (motoboot.img) might not have changed, but partition table (GPT.BIN) did. so the brick risk is there.
As @samwathegreat mentioned, since you have the XT1053, you can get your bootloader unlock code directly from Moto's web site and easily root after unlocking your bootloader, no matter what Moto ROM should be on your phone. (even 4.4.3 and 4.4.4, and future).
The only thing... If you have a real Dev Edition (says Developer Edition on the back, has a black face, woven white back) XT1053, unlocking the bootloader does not void your warranty. If you have any other XT1053 just requesting the code to unlock your bootloader DOES void the warranty.

Yeah, I was confused as well. "dev" could mean "developer", OR "device"?
Also confusing is that the XT1053 is NOT an AT&T device at all! (Although it CAN be used on AT&T - it's not an AT&T-branded device....which would be the XT1058).
?!?
Just use this guide.....first the unlocking your bootloader section. Then the root unlocked bootloader section.
Easy.

It is SIM-Unlocked already, yes. This means you can use it on T-Mobile, AT&T, or any other GSM carrier.
It is NOT bootloader unlocked until you follow the steps in the link @KJ Posted. It IS Bootloader-unlockABLE, but you must do the steps (request code & use fastboot to unlock) in order to get it "Boot-Loader unlockED".
See: "What Devices Can Unlock Their Bootloader" in the thread @KJ linked you to.
Good Luck
Hi Everyone I'm New In Xda Forums So Plz Forgive If Ask Anything Stupid,
I Have Motorola G 1st Gen xt1033 Asia retail Version, With Updated Android to Lollipop 5.0.2.
I've Been Trying for a year to root My Phone But I Cant root it I really need help, main thing is I can't unlock bootloader When I Use Fastboot OEM unlock It GivesbMe A Five Lines Code That I Copy and Paste To Official Motorola Website in which it has a button saying "can I unlock my device" but then the websites sends a msg "your device does not qualify to unlock bootloader" And that's it in stuck here ,I can't get the unlock code to unlock it so I also used kingroot ,frameroot, kingo root, iroot, rootmaster, and many more apps that says you can root without PC , but non of them worked , Plz I really want to root my phone.
Thanks And Sorry For My Bad English Skills
Your going to want to look in the Moto g 1st Gen forums. This Is for the 2014 version. It's just Moto g. Also you just unlock the bootloader then flash twrp. After that push super su to your internal storage and reboot into twrp. Then flash super su (with twrp) and your good to go

Hey I Saw A thread today, there is a tool for xt1033 to downgrade or update the bootloader. If I downgrade my bootloader or upgrade it. Maybe I'll be able to unlock the bootloader , am I right?
Sent from my XT1033 using XDA Forums
Idk I'm not a developer. More of a technology enthusiast. I wouldn't risk it. If it doesn't work your phone won't even boot into fastboot mode. It would become a paper weight. Unless you don't really care about losing your phone, then I'd go for it
