[Q] [HELP] SoD keep bugging me after all my efforts - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys!
I've been experiencing some SoD (Sleep of Death) episodes about 3 weeks ago. I've been searching for a solution ever since.
Specifications:
Phone: Samsung Galaxy S i9000;
ROM: currently stock 2.3.4 - I9000XXJWQ
Problem:
-phone keeps shutting down by itself, regardless of what I'm doing. Sometimes, when I reboot, the battery level shows 4-14%. After a second reboot, the battery shows the normal level of 60-70% (the level that was shown when the shut down occur)
-drastic drops on battery levels (screenshot attached - I've been experiencing some more drastic drops than that)
Tried, but no results:
1. I tried other ROMs (6 of them), from JB to KK (Cyanogen McKay SlimBin etc. found on xda) +wipes
2. I tried other battery - still my phone shuts down itself
3. Flash stock kernel and ROM with Odin
4. Battery recalibration didn't work either- I don't know if I made it correct. Read here a post about it and I understand that wiping batterystats.bin dose nothing but clearing the history of the battery consumption. Also, I think that flashing stock ROM took care of wiping that file so no need for calibration (correct me if I'm wrong please). Also, I think trying another battery excluded the possibility of a faulty one.
5. Checked the connection between the phone and the battery. Also I've wrapped the battery in a paper to make sure it didn't move. The phone shutting down even when it stud still on the desk made me think it was not the problem.
6. Wi-Fi setting about sleep: From "Never" to "When screen of"
Q: What do I do next?

Battery Drain on G1

Guys,I own a T Mobile G1 Android 1.6 Phone and recently I’m facing some problems. The problem that appeared recently is with the battery drain. before some days ago the battery of my G1 lasted up to 4-5 days, without using Wireless, GPS, and Bluetooth. If I used the mentioned services normally the battery lasted up to two days. But recently the battery is draining too fast. Within 4 hours the battery goes down less then 15% even I do not use any mentioned services. I keep my phone on standby, without talking a single minute with the phone, not using any service etc, and again it goes down very quick. I took some measures according to HTC instructions how to save the battery but again it does not function. I uninstalled all applications and reset the phone to factory setting by again same thing. Then I searched on the Google some instructions, I tried also that one’s but again it does not function. I always used HTC charger that came with the phone but again same problem. What is the strangest thing that after some days the battery gets back and works perfectly for two weeks, which means I use the phone normally without charging 4-5 days. As I operate very well with the smartphones, Pocket PC’s etc I start analyzing G1 and monitoring very closely why the battery goes down, I monitored for a long time the query under the :About Phone-Battery use- and I see there that Andorid OS is using the battery from 76% up to 85%. Now it came to my mind that something is keeping engaged or it keeps running the Andorid OS always on. Then I suspected that thre my be any virus on my phone, but I installed form Market Flexilis/lookout antivirus application, but there was no virus and again the battery goes very quickly down. As I said after sometime the system returns to normal and the battery lasts for 4-5 days, and when I check the information under Phone,Battery use, I see that the Andorid OS is spending only 6% of the battery. Comparing with the previous description it is a huge difference. According to my opinion there is a small problem with any file which keeps always running to much the Andorid OS. Can you please give me any instruction why Andorid OS is spending that much the battery? Or give me any instruction how to prevent this operation that keeps Android OS to much engaged? or is there any programming mistake?, is there any need for update?, do I need to root my phone as it is not rooted? The reason why I’m thinking that there is a technical problem is because sometimes the system gets back to normal and sometimes it goes out of normal running. I appreciate a lot if you could help me to resolve the mentioned problem.
I've noticed the same thing on my G1 sometimes there is fast battery drain and it seems associated with Android OS. The percentage is over 70%. I also notice it be associated with the display as well. Could be that there is some process that won't stop running and is using Android OS or it could be that on other occasions the display is not going into sleep mode properly. I wish I knew how to fix these problems but I don't. I just observe them.
The battery issue, is an up and down problem for me. Sometime I can go through it in one day or less, other days it will last me for 2 plus days.
It also could be that the battery need replacing. Who's know.
I just bought a 2nd hand G1 - works just fine. I rooted and installed CM6.1.
My battery drains within 1-2 hours. I've tried various methods of resetting stats, with no luck. How frustrating! I wonder if it's a battery hardware problem or software?
battery
I also faced bad battery life on various roms. Since I'm using COS-DS (android 2.3.3) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=950765 and the Biffmod kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=950765 the phone runs more than 24h when texting and calling. Of course you should apply the 14MB RAM hack in comination with this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831139. On standby (everything off, except data and 3g) my G1 runs >48h, before it needs to be plugged in.

Sounds like the basic description of the USB Charging Bug.
The bug triggers if the G1 is using a kernel starting 2.6.35 and onward tree, and charged using the USB instead of AC wall charger.
A couple of option to avoid the super discharge after that (you can use either);
1. Reboot after you unplug the USB charger.
2. Change kernel to one from 2.6.34 tree
You can also visit the Dev sub-forum, there's a thread there discussing the debugging process.
It is so unpredictable for me...I have just got into the habit of a reboot after unplugging USB.
Battery drain on the G1
I have the same problem. Even on standby it drops to less than half of its battery life. Sometimes its worse. today i noticed that the battery percentage was at 84. Next thing I know the phone reboots itself and it displays that it has 1% battery, battery icon empty all in red and LED flashing in red. Then I turn it off connect it to the charger, after a couple of seconds I turn it back on and says its 90 something percent. Could be a virus or just a battery bug, that's my guess. I scanned the phone with Lookout Security and there was no Virus, malware or spyware found.
I want to try different kernels for this battery issue but want to make sure I am installing the right one.
I have CM6.1 with 2.22.23.02 radio and DangerSPL installed. Can I just load any of the kernels built for EBI0?
Specifically, can I flash the kernel in the 1st post here? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010932
Thanks.

Problem : Battery and Random Shutdown

I have a really strange problem on my Note.
Whenever I open the browser and open two tabs (eg. Facebook and GSMArena), the screen starts flickering (this flickering also happens in normal usage when battery is at 1%). Along with the flickering, the network connectivity, both cellular and 2G is lost. After about 10 seconds of flickering, the phone turns off. On manually restarting, the battery level is at 1% (from whatever current %). However, on keeping the phone idle, it gains charge automatically.
Except this issue, the phone works perfectly on 2G data with background data on and all apps working properly. It is just the browser that triggers this issue.
I have tried
- different ROMs (Stock GB, stock ICS, RocketMIUI)
- different kernels (Stock GB, Stock ICS, Philz kernel, HydraCore) and
- different modems (LC1 and LR9)
and yet the issue remains.
Please help!
at <5% of battery power, the flickering happens and the phone turns off.. & this is happening to you at any battery % which is very unusual. have you tried a different battery on your note
Yeah. I know it happens on low battery. But yes, I have had drops from 68% and 46% to 1% because of the automatic shut down
u should definitely try a diff battery
My battery has bulged and spins freely on glass.. So I think it is a battery problem.
But Entropy has suggested something here in the i777 thread. Will this be of any help here? Here's the link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1428989
interesting thread but if u see a battery damage.. then i suggest atleast try a new one before u start entering into coding

[Q] Randomly auto shutdown (battery problem)

Hi guys,
I have the Razr I since 3 days now, i orderd it via ebay on a german website. I really like the phone, its amasing fast and works really great. I've compared it with the Galaxy SIII and Xperia Z from friends, and the Razr I wins on almost every thing we testet (loading webpages, opening apps, scrolling etc).
But since i use the phone, there's something wrong with the battery (i think!). The phone just randomly shuts down for about 40 till 60 times a day, my record for keeping it on is about 1 hour.
This is what I know for now, by observing:
- The phone is working correctly (on of off, doesn't matter)
- The battery gives an empy signal (but isn't)
- Due to the empty signal Android thinks the phone is empty and starts the automaticly shutdown process
- When the phone is off, i can just turn it on and the battery level is where it was before
- This cycle happens randomly, in 1 minute til 1 houre...
What i've done so far:
- Searched on google, a few similar problems, but no solutions
- Caliberate the battery
- Factory reset
- Disable apps that may couse a restart (but i don't think its a software issue tough)
- Playing with different settings, profiles etc
All those things doesn't change the randomly showing cycle that i've wrote above.
I also send an e-mail to the company where i orderd the device, so i maybe can return it and get an other one.
By the way, the phone was on JB when i received it.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? Or is it just what my own conclusion is, a broken battery?
I hope someone can help thiking about my problem!
Cheers
Could be a bad flash...
A friend got almost the same problem with his SII. Or faulty battery
Check with that company and demand for a change

Shutting down problem

Hi,
I'm experiencing this problem more than 1 month. I'm on CM10 with kowalski kernel. It seems my phone sometimes wrongly read battery status and drop battery level percentage from some value to 0 immidiatelly...and shut down occurs at the moment. I thought it could be caused by old battery, but it's not - I buy the new one and the problem still persist and it's VERY irritating...Any solution?
Thanks Jiri
Hello,
It happens also for me but only when I am around 15% and when somebody call me sometimes it fail down sometimes.
It seems that the deep sleep do not allow the system to read a correct battery value when screen came back and the system shutdown because of a too low voltage.
I did not found any solutions in several type of ROM.

This is a known problem..if i remember correctly tonyp and pengus will fix it in the neew 4.2.2

Mmmhhhh I actually cant remembet them stating that it will be fixed. I remember tony mentioning that its a low priority rom bug. It might be fixed with 4.2.2 but i am not really sure. Regarding the issue I do experience it too but only once every few weeks.

I also have this shut down problem. A lot. Maybe 5 times a day and its also driving me nuts. Mine does not happen while phone is in charger - so its probably the "battery reporting wrong charge" problem. Im on new bootloader. I've seen it go from over 50% to 0% battery in an instant.
It might have happened before but much less frequently than now. I started noticing the problem a few weeks ago on Pengus CM10 rom with kowalski kernel (before reading about it). I reflashed the kernel a few times and upgraded the kernel once or twice during that period.
I switched to PA 2.6 - 10 without improvement (KK-116). No apps installed (except Antutu)
I even had the problem in TonyPs TWRP 2.4.3.0 when trying to backup my rom once. Phone shut down while running the backup. Plugged wall charger in while phone still being off and saw that i still had battery left - probably 30-50%. The LG charging graphics icon showed this (you know, the one that shows up if your phone is off and you plug in the charger).
I Tried the following using AIO v5 tool without luck:
1) Reintalled unlocked ICS bootloader
2) Reverting to Old bootloader / partition - then back to new bootloader. Then installed ROM.
I have also tried installing Django Manouche X 1.6.1 (KOB 0.7 kernel) and running Antutu a few times (right after first boot + reboot) with the same result: shutdown. No apps installed.
I can always reproduce the issue: run Antutu benchmark 1-5 times in a row manually on battery. Plugged in, this does not happen.
It happens with or without OC/UV.
I havent tested it extensively, so I cannot be sure, but it seems to me that the rom/kernel isnt the problem since it also happened (once) in TWRP. Could it be the bootloader? Granted this is only a guess, since i have NO knowledge of Android programming or inner workings. Or maybe this is what happens when the LG battery is dying? I got the phone just as it came out.
Edit: BB 30A
I guess i have the same problem but either worse or something totally different.
Regularly around 70%, my battery just drops to 0% and my phone shuts off. It can happen anytime for me and it usually happens just after about 10-15mn of using my phone.
This morning it shut off at more than 90% and then got stuck in a bootloop i presume because it says it doesn't have battery.
Update:
I tried reflashing 30A BB. Didnt help.
Tried Django Manouche X 1.6.1 with kernel without zRAM or ramhack mod. Didnt help.
I Also tried PA 2.6 - 11 on old bootloader, and the battery-jump shutdowns continued when running antutu.
Flashed (completely stock - no rooting etc) ICS 30A with 30A BB through AIO v5. Didnt help. No tweaks or apps (except Antutu) installed. On Antutu run number 5 the phone restarted (with bootloop). Had about 36% battery. Pulled battery, rebooted, phone shut down before booting ROM. Plugged in charger, booted into ROM, showed 100% battery for 10 seconds before showing 30% battery. Tried with quadrant and 30% battery: phone shut down on run 2. Pulled battery, rebooted. Messed around with camera and gallery for 5mins at 26%: phone shutdown.
Im totally lost ... if its not the battery (as indicated by the first post (OP)) i have no idea whats going on. Maybe some other piece of hardware inside the phone is to blame. A piece of hardware that is only called upon when on battery and not when on charger. Maybe a power regulator (or some such thing) is broken?
Next test: Stock GB with GB BB
Edit: Well, the GB ROM + GB BB didnt work either: Gueste2X GoodBye v2.0R + 20L BB rebooted at 75% battery running Antutu. It showed a pop up about low battery and shut down shortly after. For the first time the battery icon still showed 75% when it shut down though.. And this time it showed 21% (not the usual 0% battery) when rebooting to ROM.
I think Im throwing in the towel regarding the software.
My dad also has an o2x, so i will try and swap the batteries and test both phones. I will ofcourse run antutu several times on my dads phone before swapping the batteries..
Update 2:
So i tried my dads O2X battery in my O2X. I Ran Antutu quite a few times and my phone didnt shut down. So I'm pretty certain my battery is messed up which is the reason my phone shuts off "randomly" showing a sudden 0% battery.
Through a google search i found a guy stating that the battery often starts "bulging" when its messed up like mine. His test was to lay the battery flat on a hard even surface and spin the battery. If it keeps going for a couple of seconds it might be messed up. My battery is definitely "bulging" and spins for much longer than my dads. His spins for less than a second. Mine spins for maybe 2 seconds. Not very scientific, but i could definitely see a difference. And i can see the excessive bulging on my battery if i look at it from the side.
So Im ordering a new battery tonight - the originals dont cost much thankfully.
Hope my walls of text can help others in the same situation.
Last update (promise):
Got the new original battery today. Charged it to 100% and used my phone for various tasks until the battery hit 70%. (This was my old batterys absolutely certain "breaking point" when running Antutu benchmark. On my old battery Antutu would crash on first or second run every time when battery is at 70%.)
On the new battery i quit running Antutu after the 13th run in a row without a "battery low" shutdown. The battery was at 40% after the 13th run.
I lay the old and the new battery flat on my smooth metal mousepad and spun them around. The new battery spun for less than 1 second. The old battery spun for almost 4 seconds on one side - almost 3 seconds on the other side.
Two working batteries (my dads 2+ year old battery and my own brand new one) performing equally and at the same time differently to one defective battery. It lends some credence to "the guys" theory that battery defects might result in "bulging" of the battery.
Which means, your battery can be defective but not "bulge". If however, your battery is "bulging" something likely is or will be defective. Fantastic knowledge to posess, if true.
It might seem like a "well duh, thats obvious" revelation, but Ive held my old battery in my hands a lot the last 2 years (especially lately) and I did not notice the "bulging" at any time.

Problem after flashing Angry ROM v4,2

I love the Angry Team rom v3.6 no issues whatsoever. But now after flashing Angry ROM v4.2 I am feeling certain issues which are very isolated incident (not reported by any of the users so far, i guess). And the bugs are
1. The charging has just gone mad. I would charge it for 100% but once rebooting the phone says that there is absolutely no power or very less (~10% - 15%). Actually I tried to wipe the battery stats, but I could not able to find that option in Philz's Kernel. Can any of the techies help me on how to wipe the battery stats and how can I get the proper stats and correct battery level again. This is very annoying for me, because I dont know even if I see the phone is fully charged, it still may not be so actually.
2. My Note phone mysteriously flickers and automatically shuts down as such flickering intensifies. If I try to connect the phone immediately to charge the flickering stops and be stable for the next 30 mins. This flicker happens even when there is sufficient charge in the phone.
3. At times I see the phone gets hanged.
3. Contacts have a horizontal stripe at top making it difficult to read the recent dialed numbers. (Probably an issue in ROM or something needs to be changed).
Any help is greatly appreciated.
