Just got a brand new ativ s with a non-working rear camera. Details
OS version 8.0.10517.150
firmware: 2424.13.11.2
hardware 15.15.1.0
radio soft 2424.13.9.1
radio hard 0.0.0.800
bootloader 13.08.14.16
chip soc 1.5.32
3rd party apps don't work, hard reset did nothing. No mSD card inserted, with or no sim.
What should I do with it? Is there any ROM, firmware or other stuff to flash in order to make it work? Should I take it to warranty and get a new one, which will also probably stop working pretty soon? Should I get a full refund? Or should I wait for another update, maybe wp8.1 and hopefully this is a software bug, not a faulty hardware?
Why would you assume a warranty replacement would also be defective? That's... um... I do not understand the thought process which would produce that belief. The fact that third-party apps and hard-reset didn't fix it pretty clearly indicates a hardware problem. The fact that people aren't constantly complaining about this issue (anecdotally, I have had *no* trouble with my phone's camera) suggests that it's a pretty rare problem. In what way is a warranty replacement not the obvious answer?
Because every piece of hardware that I bought and has failed in the first 24 hours came from a bad batch. One time I even got 3 brand new hard disks fail in a row. The 4th one lasted 1 year.

I have a recently-purchased used G1 that worked fine at first, and now fails to read SIM card.
The phone is rooted, SIM-unlocked, using Cyanogen Recovery 1.4, newest HSPL/Radio.
The problem occured intermittently at first, now almost always; with or without the SD card in, on several ROM's. The SIM card works on other phones.
My conclusion is that this is a hardware problem - I plan to revert to stock everything later to confirm this as most likely.
Any other suggestions as to what could cause this problem, solutions to try, or possible fixes for such a hardware issue?
Thanks
it has to be the hardware
I'm holding out on taking the phone apart until I'm sure I have no shot at getting original buyer to initiate a warranty replacement.
Has anyone tried to repair or replace this component?
Or does anyone know where I'd begin looking for the piece? (Apart from a more-cheaply-repairable busted-phone, i.e., with screen broken)

Not that I'm aware of. A few people were successful in taking their phone apart and reassembling for the sake of cosmetic modifications and even as far as replacing the motherboard for those pesky spl bricks. In regards to the sim card reader... I couldn't tell you. Where did you buy the phone?
If it's ebay you might be able to return it and get a refund. If it's craigslist your SOL.
I guess I'm one of the unlucky ones who has to send this phone in for repair.
Going there this morning..
My question is to those that have received their phones back. Any indication that the repair done has anything done different to the phone?
I mean, if they are just replacing the defective guts with essentially the exact same guts but working, does that not mean it will just happen again (SD Failure)?
Or did they actually change something within the phone to make it more durable and essentially eliminate what brought it to them in the first place?
Hopefully someone in the know could answer this... pointless to repair something with another soon to fail board or sd card.
that is a very good question, of all the phones i sent in for repair and got back
they kept their original IMEI numbers
they all came back with replaced PCB (motherboard) and cause of failure is "No Power"
by that i figure out they mean, it does not charge when you plug in the USB cable to the phone after it dies.
it seems like whatever controls the internalSD also controls the USB charging of the phone
so the problem might not really be with the internal SD but rather the power relay that supplies power to the internal SD and battery charge.

This is a great point allgamer.
However fact still remains... if they are swapping out the guts for identical, but working internals, that defeats the purpose of actually correcting the problem as the problem will surely pop up again.
Lets hope it doesnt.. but this phone doesn't seem like a good candidate for constant flashing the way my old HTC Touch Diamond was. Especially if you're doing it with ODIN, you may not have a leg to stand on come out of warranty claims.
At least if you flash something with KIES, because it was an "official" update provided by samsung. So if the phone goes corrupt, you can yell to the heavens and they'd have to fix it, because essentially they corrupted your phone.
It would be great to get some feedback from other members who received their phone back from repair. I wonder if one of those members had the SD go corrupt again with the new Motherboard in place.
My phone decided to not switch on any longer. The only sign of life is the notification led blinking red when is in charge, no way to access it with any program if I attach it to the PC with a USB cable.
I should send it to the Sony repairing center (still under warranty) but the phone is rooted; given its situation do they discover it ?
I had that exact problem. Turned out that the battery suddenly died after about a year.
In my experience they never care what stuff is currently on the phone. Instead they'll just flash it with the latest stock rom after fixing the hardware.
Thanks a lot for sharing your experience. I really hope will be the same in my case as well. I'll post here what will happen.
PS I'm wondering about the batteries' quality: my daughter with a z1c had your same problem (a little more than one year life), you, may be myself... I know the sample is not significant but...
Same thing happened with mine & i was on a custom rom with unlocked bootloader...they probably had no way to get into the phone just like i couldn't so they probably couldn't tell it was modified...it was just a brick at that point...i noticed certain batches were affected by this sudden death and after pulling my tag out i noticed my phone was part of that batch that was poorly assembled in china...so brand new phone for me!

OK, another positive experience. I cross my fingers and I'll post what will happen to me
I have the impression they dont even check the software, they just flash a new fw and thats it. Or they dont care.
My phone locked up on me like this, but I solved it by pushing a pin into the reset button hole.

Thanks for the suggestion but I tried any possible way to resurrect my phone, including what you're saying, without any result. I hope to confirm soon what all the contributors to this thread are saying...
Just received the device from assistance; everything went well: the motherboard was replaced.
The only drawback is that the lost the tiny grill that cover the mic at the bottom of the phone !!!!!
My main camera recently became faulty. Image preview and photos were blurry as hell. Wide angle etc was unaffected. I thought it may be a software issue however hitting the phone temporarily fixed it... Until the next time I opened the app.
My network O2 in the UK have accepted this as a repair fault and are issuing me with a NEW device, not repairing mine and sending it back.
All I'll say is check your camera's...

You mean to tell us to hit our phones once or twice to see if an issue will appear? haha
Your camera was not well connected to the motherboard and that is why it was malfunctioning and hitting fixed it. That, or the cable connection within the camera was faulty.
Regardless, good that you got a new piece without any hassle. If it was out of warranty that would likely have been an easy fix by someone who has half a brain when it comes to repairs.

No sorry if it wasn't clear. Basically the auto focus is faulty.... Hitting the phone kind of knocks it or kicks it back into life.
I'm not the only one with the issue there's a few on Samsung's own forums with the same problem.
I'm hoping it was just a lose connection and my replacement will be all good when it arrives.
I have the same problem after the August security update. Thought that last update from few days ago will fix the issue. My problem is with the zoom. Everything more than x9.9 doesn't work anymore. Doesn't automatically focus. If i come down to 9.9 is clear. Everything more is blurry.
August update and camera is fine so I will not be hitting my phone to fix it
For me August update started the problem.
This post makes me laugh because I've had this problem since I first got my S21U lol. The only solution for me has been to take pictures in really bright environments if I'm trying to get results with high quality and better focus.
Hello,
I also have a problem with the camera. When I am in video mode, a lot of times my stabilization stop working and when I love my phone it is shaky. I assuming that I have a problem with EIS beacuse when I turn stabilization off in the setting it is quite better.
Does anybody have similar problem?
I am one the last update, but the problem was present before last update.

thats your camera's OIS thatts effed up, tthis happened to my otherphone oneplus 3 years ago, i eventually sold it off before it got worse, id say you should get the module replaced under warranty. its definitely a hardware issue,
Update on this... My network acknowledged this as faulty and I got a replacement device.
Camera is fine so far on this one on latest update. I don't believe it is software causing this as a factory reset didn't fix it. Got to be a hardware fault.
Does dropping the phone count ?
Yes I'd be inclined to agree it's hardware now after installing AUHB update. Op how did you get O2 to agree a new device wasn't the repair option available
Yeah I'm experiencing this. It's SUPER frustrating. Just doesn not focus
Stuck on the July update here in Aus (was hoping the aug up would fix it but doesn't sound like it here )
Yeah I thought that but it's unchanged in the last update. The 103 MP camera is shocking currently. The wide angle a bit better maybe but in all modes it's not great. As it's in warranty they can repair it. First phone I've had to send in for repair since my HTC one M7. Still if needs be
Hey all, bit of a weird one here that might not have a fix beyond hardware replacement.
My Japanese Pixel 5a (model G4S1M) recently ran into the black screen of death issue, where the display and touch completely stopped functioning. Since I'm not overseas nowadays, I took the phone to a local uBreakiFix location to see if they could perform an in-warranty repair. To my surprise, they could, BUT in doing so they've installed a US-based (G1F8F) motherboard, and now the cell radio is permanently stuck off. My immediate assumption is a hardware mismatch, where the now-US board is expecting a different variant of hardware to interface with.
At the store's recommendation, they even performed a second motherboard swap (still G1F8F), same issue. They've marked it as "unrepairable" and advise I try to get a replacement arranged with Google. My question is, does anyone have any potential insight as to what might be going on, or anything on the software side that I could attempt to try and force the radio to cooperate before shipping it off? From my limited research it seems as though the ROMs are identical between regions, and flashing any that are marked for SoftBank, etc give no different results.
Happy to provide any additional details, I figure someone may find this interesting though at the very least.
Thanks!
