[Q] Sony Xperia Z1 Needs Rooting? - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there xda community.
I have been interested in rooting my android devices for quite some time now although with my previous phone I had no such luck (given it was a Samsung galaxy s2 with that damn Australian custom kernel)
Anyway I'm here now cause all I want to be able to do on my Xperia z1 is plug in an xbox controller and use that, online it is said I don't need a root, that I should be able to just plug it in and go (with the otg cable of course) but no such luck, my phone doesn't not indicate that it's recognised, I am running 4.2.2.
Will I need to root to be able to do this after all?
My phone specs are:
Sony Xperia Z1
C903
4.2.2
8974-AAAAANAZQ-10270011-23
3.4.0-perf-g66807d4-02450-g9a218f1
14.1.G.2.259
Is this unrootable?
Thanks in advance.

Then you should search more carefully, there is no direct root like Vroot, 360 or Cydia for .290 and .136 FW. The only way to Root Z1 is with THIS method by NUT. You have to Downgrade to .534 FW provided by NUT to not lose IMEI, Root with Bin4ar, then Update first to .290 with the instruction provided, then when you have .290 rooted follow this instruction HERE
Watch the Video tutorial Hot To Root on first link.

Okay so I now have my Xperia rooted at .136. I'm hoping now there is a way to connect a wired xbox controller, but my phone doesn't indicate that it's connected. Apologies for the questions.

Good, don't forget to click thanx. :good:
About connect Xbox Controller, what I know it cannot be connected natively because is not supported. The only controller which can be connected is from PS3. But you are Rooted and I think this can pe possible in some way.
First, try different OTG cable because I got the same problems like yours with my PS3 Controller, look HERE.
Then when you have the right cable and everything should work try to follow this Thread Hot To.
Good Luck. :fingers-crossed:

One last problem, as your probably aware now that my phone is rooted ive lost camera funcion, is there a fix for this?
Also I appear to have lost data, so I cant use the internet without wifi.

Are you sure that you only rooted? Sounds like bootloader unlock to me

Rooting device won't cause losing any camera functionality.
However, unlocking bootloader on 4.2.2 will do permanently damage - I hope you watched what did you do...
Procedure is quite clear, root firmware 534, upgrade to 290 - then unlock bootloader.
Sony fixed camera broke error but it's not for older firmware.
So if you unlocked bootloader on 4.2.2 you have permanently damaged camera.
If you have backup TA partition, restore it and do everything again and try to set up your controller with this MARKET APP

I'm not 100% sure, Google should know that (for sixaxis controller).
And for bootloader - yeap, I'm sure.
If doesn't have TA backup - there's no help.
Only if someone found some way to fix it and I haven't heard for that - but I doubt...

I was under the impression I needed a rooted device to use backup TA?
Can somebody explain to me what part of process I went through where I unlocked my bootloader?
All I was trying to do is root my phone NOT unlock the bootloader.
I do appreciate the help.

How?

Downgraded to NUT's 14.1.G.1.534 with flash tool rooted it with Bin4ry, installed dualrecovery then updated to 14.1.G.2.257 and finally 14.2.A.1.136.
What went wrong?

You downgraded to .534 FW provided bu NUT, Rooted with Bin4ry, Installed DualRecovery then "updated to .257", this updeate wan not necessary and instead of doing that you should update to .136 directly with the instructions from the thread, BUT this should not cause any issues what so ever.
Then you never did this steps from HERE?
Type on keyboard *#*#7378423*#* and check what Bootoader Unlock Saying, Yes, No or Unlocked?

Doomkernel questions

I've recently flashed this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448613 and was just wondering can I still update via Pc companion/SEUS to new firmwares/updates without losing the kernel, root etc...like will it replace the kernel with a stock one?
I'm a noob at Flashing and search didn't really answer my question.
If you have unlocked your bootloader by the official method at unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com, then you can not use PC Companion or SEUS to update firmware.

Not as far as I know. Older Xperia models had test point method, but Z1 does not have this option.

Unlocking bootloader doesn't have anything to do with waterproofness, it's something done using a computer.

Obviously. In order to access test points, the back cover will have to be removed. The back cover uses tape/gasketing to enforce waterproofing. My question was about whether someone has actually looked into a testpoint unlock yet for the XZ1.

[Q] How to backup TA, MAC and IMEI with unlocked BL?

Greetings to everyone
I have already unlocked BL & rooted my 4.3 xperia Z1 with CWM recovery installed... the camera and everything works fine
So, how to backup TA, MAC and IMEI with unlocked BL? I want to avoid any furthur losing possibility of them
Sorry If this a repeated question but I have searched a lot before posting this
thank you
You can't Backup your TA if you Unlocked your Bootloader. You lost your DRM keys permanently. You will not be able to re-lock you bootloader and you are not covered by your warranty. Sorry but you should read carefully before do anything.
Yeah, too late, you should have done this before the unlock....

You don't have to avoid anything just read carefully everything when you try to do something. My advice is now to wait for the confirmed and safe way to root or update. In your position you already lost the safest way so I will root, update or flash custom roms to enjoy the phone but remember, it's your own risk and responsability.
Ive done the same, came from HTC.....so I will still have all tge features unless I flash say cm11 and try to go back to a Sony based rom?

Unlocking bootloader allowed, why not root?

If sony is completely fine with us unlocking hte bootloader, as shown here: http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/unlocking-boot-loader
Why did they make it so difficult to root the device?

That's only to back up TA upgrading with root from 4.2.2 is to 4.3 or 4.4 is not supported.
Upgrade to stock then unlock
Also I think losing all data is a sacrifice worth it besidesvyou can back up data Sony provides you with the tools or just copy SD card to desktop and restore when done.
OOORRRRRRRR.....
You can get pre-rooted firmware here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2711982
Backup TA and unlock(if you want but I'm getting the sense that you just want root)
The last option is the preferred one no downgrade pain nonsense.
And finally to answer your Question: Sony is gonna Sony they say they don't mind you unlocking boot loader but the remove the good stuff like BIONZ. Now just imagine with root in which they never claimed to not mind about.
yup owns Z1 and stuff.

I bought it new from Sony with Kitkat on it in middle east -Dubai
The issue is being sorted via PM with me.
However, this is a synopsis.
The OP unlocked the bootloader on 4.4 - Camera works.
Then, instead of just flashing a custom kernel to gain root, the OP followed a guide for a locked bootloader to gain root. Once they downgraded to 4.2 the camera broke.
In order to fix this the solution is
1) Relock the bootloader (by restoring the TA partition if a TA backup was made, in this case not, or by using flashtool)
2) Use pccompanion to upgrade to latest FW
3) Re-unlock the bootloader by the official method (Or flashtool, if it was re-locked with flashtool)
4) Flash a stock based custom kernel
5) Install SuperSU from the play store.

If you unlocked on 4.3+ it wont break anyway
try relocking the boot with flashtool, upgrading by pccompanion then unlocking again with flashtool

[Q] Rooting issues - 4.3, IMEI, not actually rooted etc....

Hi All
So firstly I should say I only have myself to blame. I'm quite a techy guy so I just assumed i'd be able to root my phone without any issues and pick it up as I go. What i've quickly found out is i'm in way over my head and i'm an absolute noob!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated from those guys out there that actually know what they are doing. I have read many forums but i'm still lost.
My story is as follows:
- I have a Z1 that was locked on stock firmware 4.4
- I read that it would be a good idea to unlock the bootloader so i did this
- I wanted to root my phone but from what I read I could see I would have to downgrade the firmware to 4.2. So this is what i did.
- By doing this I lost my IMEI number, got very worried i'd ruined my phone. I tried many things to restore it, there were a variety of different solutions online, none of them worked. I eventually flashed a 4.3 firmware i found on this forum which restored my IMEI.
- I then read through a few posts of people who had similar issues and advice was given to downgrade again (if i wanted to root) but this time exclude the baseband etc. I did this, but lost my IMEI again! the advice didn't work
- So I then went and updgraded again! to 4.3 to restore my IMEI and network access
- There doesn't seem to be a way to root on 4.3 so my phone isn't rooted, that's ok. But when i try to use my banking apps they don't work! they say my phone is rooted even though it isn't! I have checked with root checker
- Like an idiot, i didn't back up the phone when i first started doing all of this, i didn't really know what i was doing so I am now in a situation where i have the worst of both worlds. They are, i can either 1. downgrade the firmware to 4.2, root my phone but not have a valid IMEI and network access or 2. stay on 4.3, have a valid IMEI and not be rooted but certain apps think i'm rooted so i can't use them.
So all in all i've just messed things up and i'm in way over my head. I would really appreciate some advice
Thanks
Yes you are right.
Also, there is no issue with losing IMEI when downgrading, it happens to everyone, but it comes back when you upgrade.
Also, if you unlock the bootloader there is no need to downgrade, that is a locked bootloader method of rooting
You should root before unlocking the bootloader in order to backup the TA partition, but you are too late now...
Solution
1) Use flashtool to relock the bootloader
2) Use pccompanion to update to latest firmware
3) Unlock the bootloader again with flashtool
4) Flash a custom kernel for stock based ROMs
5) Install SuperSU from the play store.

i'm just looking at the tutorial to relock by bootloader. It says "before u relock bootloader u have to be on pure stock kernel (flash only the kernel.sin using flashtool), else the device WILL NOT BOOT after relock"
