XT1053 : Returning to stock & changing locale - Moto X Q&A

Hi,
I own a Moto X Developer Edition, so a XT1053 device.
After some issue, I decided to return to full stock, 4.4.2, and possibly changing the locale to get a full French support.
I followed the instructions from this thread to return to stock. And instead of choosing the original firmware, I took the French one from this list.
Everything run smoothly without any issue, except one annoying problem for a phone, the radio doesn't work, so no GSM connectivity. The phone says the radio is unactivated.
I think there is a way to "mix" some img files from the original Dev Edition and the FR one to get things working, but I don't know exactly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi,
Really need some help on this one because as I didn't get any answer, I decided to reflash the official 4.4 firmware to get my radio back. But as the Moto X has been flashed with the French 4.4.2 rom, it refuses to be downgraded to 4.4.
Any idea? Thanks.

Please please please please read up on these things before you end up flashing!
I'm glad I could answer before you ended up hard bricking your phone, your current bootloader is based on the 4.4.2 rom, so it is impossible to downgrade to previous images. If you were stubborn and skipped this information, you would have tried to manually flash the 4.4 image with mfastboot commands and just purposely left out the bootloader, if you did this, then as soon as you got the 4.4.2 OTA to update and accepted it, you would have hard bricked your phone.
Now with all that said, it may be possible to take the NON-HLOS.bin and fsg.mbn from the 4.4 SBF T-Mobile/Dev Edition image and try to flash that radio/modem to your phone. I would make a backup before doing this though. just follow the fastboot commands for the modem and you should be okay. Remember to follow them exactly.
fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
fastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
I am not entirely sure that you can use the 4.4 modem with a 4.4.2 rom. There may have been some firmware changes that prevent this from working, but you are welcome to try, I would personally wait until a T-Mobile/Dev Ed SBF 4.4.2 image appears and try the same procedure with that instead, but you are welcome to "chance" it

Thanks for the help.
In the meantime, I've read this thread and this one. So, I tried to flash the Rogers Canada 4.4.2 image. Everything runs fine, but still no radio.
But, I currently run the instructions from here to return to stock, and so I didn't know I had to flash NON-HLOS.bin file. I'm going to try this right now.
Thanks again.

Just tried to flash the NON-HLOS.bin file by following your instructions. Tried with both Rogers Canada sbf and with the Official 4.4 image. Same, no radio.
Wait for the official Developer Edition 4.4.2 or I'll contact Motorola. Does somebody know if an there is some ETA from this official image?
Thanks.

Just to give you a heads up, the NON-HLOS.bin file is where most of the modem actually is (all 50-60MB of it), I'll send a PM to the topic creator, because it's not giving the community the right information, they are missing that critical piece.
Be careful with your bootloader, the FR version may be the same as the UK bootloader (30.B3), the Rodgers version is (30.B4) meaning you would no longer be able to flash the whole SBF for the FR version because it would have a lower bootloader. However, you would be safe by just flashing the system image, but I would recommend not taking any OTA updates if you flash it.
Also remember that radios require a reset/power down, because it needs to get the information from the SIM card to use the particular radio frequencies. Also make sure the APN is correctly configured, this may also cause an issue.
There may be another Developer Edition 4.4 image directly from Moto that you could try, I think it takes 24 hours for them to get back with you giving you the link to their google drive though, however, it may be the same as the T-Mobile one on SBF.
You could also attempt getting the patched files from a 4.4.2 OTA image and merging it with a 4.4 radio (basically over-writing some of the files in the 4.4 version), I am unsure if this would work, but in theory it should, since that's what is happening during the update. However, I don't know if there are checks or anything, don't brick your phone because of me

Thanks for your message.
I've tried to flash the modem part only, then switch off/on the phone. No way, no radio. As I flashed the Rogers firmware, yes, my bootloader has been upgraded to 30B4.
Only way now is to wait for the official Developer Edition 4.4.2 zip, or to contact Motorola.

Stuck between a rick and a hard place , been trying to warn folks not to flash the new 4.4.2 sbf firmware, the list gets bigger and bigger by the day if people who either hard brick or have no radio signal. I actually tried to just have a warning sticky for this reason and was denied by the moderators. All.I can suggest is flash the modem for south american variants as there 4.4.2 sbf firmware is available, also flash the fsg.mbn file too

He wouldn't have been able to flash a 4.4 image anyways because he used the 4.4.2 FR image. The only reason to upgrade via OTA/SBF is if you are certain that your phone matches the SBF. Otherwise there are too many possible complications to list here. His best bet is the NON-HLOS and fsg from that 4.4.2 version since it has the 4.4 modem and the fixes/modifications of the 4.4.2 as well. Or he could try to "manually" update the T-mobile 4.4 SBF modem, by copying the T-mobile 4.4.2 OTA modem patches and overwriting the select few files in the SBF, then flashing the new image.
However, in reality, it's probably best to wait for the "official" SBF anyways.

I know you're doing a dawn good job at warning people :good: I should have read some threads before flashing, my stupidity !
I'll try to contact Motorola and see what can be done. Problem is this is a DE bought in USA, and I'm in France. Not the best case.

Your screwed, the European boot loader is 30.b3 and America is 30.b4, the modem aren't compatible, you can't run European modems with american boot loader and visa versa , call moto
Sorry for your situation. Have you tried flashing the French firmware?

Yes that's what I wrote, I've seen the bootloader has been upgraded. As the official ROM for the Moto X DE already includes the french, it's not a big deal for me to get stuck with the ghost.en.US ROM. But as I've already flashed a 4.4.2 (the french one), I need the official 4.4.2 which is not yet available.
I've read in another thread, Motorola has accepted to exchange some phones in that case, I cross my fingers.

Hi,
I had a chat yesterday with the Motorola Service. This issue can be covered by the warranty only for Developer Edition. Now my problem is the cost to send the Moto from France to the US, but I think this may be interesting for people with the same issue.
Or we have to wait for the official release of the T-Mobile 4.4.2 ROM, but I couldn't get an ETA.

stock 4.4.2 boot.img
i flashed faux123 custom kernel and was not aware it was for 4.4 the updater app allowed me to install it
now my phone is screwed up
does anyone know where I can find the stock kernel image for 4.4.2 on unlocked xt1053 dev edition

How to downgrade bootloader 4.4.2 > 4.4? I'm at limbo!

Hello folks.
I'm on a bit of a limbo. Can you help me?
Fist of all i should state that i was a former Galaxy S3 owner, so even if I have some experience with the underworld of rooting and flashing, bootloader issues are a bit alien for me.
The problem:
My Brazilian Moto X with unlocked bootloader was on 4.4, and after receiving the OTA update, i thought that i could update it if I removed root and etc (after all i was not using Xposed and ETC, so no deep modifications at /system that i know).
Of course i was wrong, and as greeted with a nice bootloop by my moto X. No problem, I got the 4.4.2 UK and flashed it thought RSD lite. After the flashing, I dit not liked the modifications the UK 4.4.2 retail have (like carrier name on bar, etc etc) and just flashed Philz and recovered my nandroid.
All is nice, but now i can't update to 4.4.2 Brazilian because i can't install 4.4 Retail Brazilian trought RSD lite, since the Moto X just detects that it haves 4.4.2 bootloader and not let me downgrade! I'm in a Limbo \o/
What now? There is any way to downgrade the bootloader? There is any one who have a full Brazilian 4.4.2 image (or a image without carrier name on the bar) for unlocked bootloaders? Any 4.4.2 flashable update using CWM or TWRP?
Oh god, so many questions. Thanks for your atention!

you can't downgrade the bootlaoder sorry
as for the carrier name in the bar someone will make a xposed mod to remove it.
i would either stay with 4.4 if that makes you happy or flash the correct 4.4.2 firmware for your device and tweak it to your liking.
Unfortunately you cannot downgrade the bootloader from 4.4.2 to 4.4.
Is it so dificult to do a 4.4.2 flashable update or we just lack devs?

I can only find the UK one. There is no 4.4.2 factory image for Brazilian Moto X, and i really don't want to install Xposed to remove the carrier name from the bar, since i play Square Enix titles.

The full image will probably be available in a few days to a week, so you should probably just wait for it since your phone is working.
Boot loaders are number differently that's why everyone who has flash, or just about everyone who has flashed a new firmware has had issue evedn though the firmwares are 4.4.2, morale . Flash only your specific carrier firmware and all this craziness would stop, my 2 cents

It certainly seems Motorola has changed the game with 4.4.2, flashing other carriers firmware at this time seems quite risky. As you said I wouldn't recommend it right now until more is known and all full flash images of 4.4.2 are released.

OP's issue was that he wanted to downgrade to 4.2 -- not that he was trying to change the carrier version of the 4.4.2 bootloader. Are there any threads about someone having an issue trying to flash a different carrier's version of 4.4.2?

Remember ...good things come to those who wait.......and bad things for those who are too impatient.

There is no leaked 4.4.4 full SBF yet. In a couple weeks, maybe a month it will probably be released.
As long as you never downgraded from a higher version to the german 4.4.2, you can take the OTA without risk. You will need stock Recovery, no Xposed, and no significant modifications made to /system.
Assuming you are full stock and haven't made modifications, the OTA should install without issue.
We will need more details to properly advise you.

If you used RSDLite and fully flashed the SBF to your phone, or used mfastboot and flashed ALL PARTS to your phone, you are safe to take whatever 4.4.4 OTA is pushed to you.
If you only flashed "parts" and have mixed versions (system.img from one rom, no-hols.bin from another, etc), then you need to be careful.. or if you have one version on your phone and try to downgrade it to a lower version.
As @samwathegreat said, there is no leak of a 4.4.4 SBF yet, (well the Verizon one has but we would not recommend flashing it on anything but a Verizon XT1060 phone)
The guys that maintain http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0 do a great job FINDING the full SBF files, and posting them as soon as they get their hands on them. But since that site isn't owned, operated or supported by Moto, we have no way of knowing how long it will take for the SBF's to show up.

If you have flashed modem files from a different rom than the rest of your phone, any OTA will likely fail its pre-validation checks.
Mixing parts of two different roms isn't advised. Taking updates can fail, brick your phone, or cause other unexpected results.
Sure, there are one or two who say they've done it and are "fine" but we've seen enough posts to know the next OTA, next time they flash, they will likely encounter issues.
My advice. stay with what you have, and wait for the 4.4.4 SBF for the model/carrier you have, and fully flash it. It is the SAFEST way to go.

hi Daniel,
I flashed manual in fastboot ALL part of 4.4.2 files from SBF en.DE (not use RDS)
as you say me, the radio modem doesn't works and flash the tmobile modem (like you send me) and all is OK
now received notification about OTA to 4.4.4 (en.DE)
so, you think it's safe to download ota abd update ?
if radio not work, reflash manual the fsg.mbn and NON-HLOS.bin that I've, right ?
Thanks for reply Danny
EDIT :
I'm on 4.4.2 en.DE stock but ROOTED an with xposed modules and TWRP recovery ....
any problems to install ota ?

Hello,
I have the same problem. I bought a US Moto X Dev Ed. and flashed the german retail with the instructions from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/development/update-xt1058-to-android-4-4-2-uk-t2628381
Is it right that I should not accept the OTA because I deleted the modem lines?

I don't know exactly what ROM is on a Brasilian XT1058.
On you phone, go App Drawer -> Settings... Make note of what is listed under System Version, Android Version, and build number.
That is what to look for when you are searching for the Stock SBF for your phone. The file name will usually contain parts or all of that info, and possibly the carrier name, or acronym for the carrier name (Verizon might be VZW, Rogers Canada might be RCI, etc)
This is important because if you have a locked bootloader, you can't for example flash an XT1058 from AT&T USA (locked bootloader), with the SBF for an XT1058 from Rogers Canada.

Right, you have an XT1058 from Rogers Canada... Notice the RCI in the system version (which I also mentioned in my post as a possible acronym)
No offense, but your posts come across as if you are not willing to do anything but ask "tell me how to do this".
I would have a different attitude if you showed me that you took the time to read and try to understand what has been posted.
For example, I KNOW the correct XT1058 RCI CA 4.4.4 SBF is out there on the file factory link, and it has XT1058, RCI CA, 4.4.4 and that system number in its name! but YOU have to take the time to look, IT IS YOUR PHONE.
But no, its been "do it for me."
I have a life. Helping people on these forums is a HOBBY, not a job. I don't have the time to spoon feed each individual. That is why there are guides written (which I gave you links to).
If you can't figure this out, maybe you should play it safe and skip trying to flash your phone. And if you haven't factory reset your phone yet, try that as a first step.
sorry!

It took me all of 15 seconds to use the link in my signature to the thread with SBF ROM sites, then click the FileFactory site, and find a listing for XT1058_RCI-CA_4.4.4_KXA21.12-L1.26_59_cid14_CFC_1FF.xml.zip
http://www.filefactory.com/file/5z0...4.4.4_KXA21.12-L1.26_59_cid14_CFC_1FF.xml.zip
which most certainly DOES work as I am downloading it as I type.

Download the correct firmware from here: http://www.filefactory.com/folder/dd05c058d3ff8dbe/?sort=created&order=DESC&show=100&page=1
Here you have the XT1058 AT&T 4.4.4 version for example: http://www.filefactory.com/file/48ofsvh148j7/ATT_XT1058_4.4.4-KXA21.12-L1.26_CFC_1FF.xml.zip
Here is a good how-to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/guide-moto-x-return-to-100-stock-using-t2446515
Make sure you only flash a version that has the same or newer bootloader version! Downgrading can/will brick your device.
Just look up your bootloader version:
30.70 = original 4.2.2
30.71 = 4.2.2 OTA with camera update
30.B2 = 4.4
30.B4 = 4.4.2
30.B7 = 4.4.4
Meaning if you have 30.B7 for example, flashing 4.4.2 is a big no-no
You can find more about it here: http://mark.cdmaforums.com/MotoX-Downgrade.htm

[Q] How to update from 4.4.2 to 5.1?

I posted this on reddit before the update was out but didn't get much info. Hopefully I find better luck here.
So I bought a Moto X 2013 in January. It was fairly new. The person I bought it from had unlocked the bootloader, flashed TWRP and rooted the phone.
Later I noticed the model number on the back of the phone is XT1049, ( Republic Wireless version) but the actual version running on the phone is XT1053 (T-mobile version). Also noticed that MotorolaOTA is disabled. The phone is also SIM-unlocked because I use a GSM SIM with it.
What I want to find out is how exactly to go about updating to 5.1?
I keep reading that flashing another carrier's firmware could brick you device. In this case, will flashing the xt1053 stock firmware on a phone that is originally xt1049 brick my phone?
Do I download and flash the XT1053 ota zip ? Do I disable MotorolaOTA?
I have X-posed installed as well. I would like o know how to disable that completely too .
So what's the safest way for me to upgrade from 4.4.2 to 5.1?
Thanks

I've been asked not to OTA.
Apparently the guy "flashed the Retail US factory image and flashed the Republic Wireless/Sprint radio files for the modem to work"
Even if I were to do this, which stock firmware would I use, the XT1049 or the XT1053 one?

Because the OTA is based off the strings contained in the /system partition, it would get the Retail US OTA.
BUT If you have mixed up parts of modems and roms, DO NOT Take an OTA.
First it will likely fail the pre-flash validation checks (due to wrong parts being on there), next if for some reason it doesn't fail and proceeds with flashing, you'll end up with ALL parts of the Retail XT1053 rom on there.
Finally, since its an XT1049, the SIM UNLOCK hack was likely used, and I'm not sure if that would survive flashing. And its unknown at this time if it will survive upgrade to Lollipop.

So you're saying I'm stuck on 4.4.2?
I have attached a pic of my about phone section. The baseband version is different from other XT1053s.
Someone said I should be able to flash just the system partition without affecting anything else. How true is that? They also suggested flashing the RW 4.4.4 image and wait to OTA. But I was concerned about GSM usability with that.
Finally, it would seem my best option would be to flash the TWRP xt1053 backup, but the reports of bugs is putting me off.
I'd really like to get lollipop and remain using the xt1053 software if I can. Thanks

Because you have an XT1049 model and are trying to use XT1053 firmware it gets complicated. Also, the XT1049 hardware was SIM/Carrier locked, and there was a hack to unlock it (it was the only way to sim unlock it). I don't know if that SIM unlock hack survives flashing different versions, etc. So I really don't want to advise you and have you get SIM locked.
If the baseband is different than other XT1053's its possible that you are runing a mix of XT1049 radios/modems with other parts of the XT1053 rom. So taking an upgrade in this state is risky. It could fail or even brick your phone. A mix like that is probably why the Moto OTA updater was disabled/frozen.
I personally haven't had much luck mixing parts from roms for two different phones, and I usually don't advise it due to potential side effects, as well as potential issues when trying to flash back to the stock rom for your model/carrier.
As for flashing just the /System partition, that is pretty much what restoring the lollipop backups are doing. At that point, /SYSTEM doesn't match the partition table, bootloader, trusted zone, and other components which could also cause other bugs while running (speaker phone bug reported by those using the TWRP lollipop back apparently doesn't exist on those that took the full update).
My advise... stay put.
If you really want to upgrade... WAIT. First ask in the thread talking about the Sprint/RW SIM Unlock Crack if there are any conditions on upgrading after you SIM unlock. I would also ask about any risks or impacts from flashing back to STOCK RW ROM in that thread, or using another carrier's rom. Finally, I'd wait on flashing anything until BOTH Republic Wireless and XT1053 5.1 SBF files are available... and then proceed. You may need to flash RW 5.1, then flash /system from XT1053's 5.1 rom. BUT i'm not 100% sure it will work, and wont SIM unlock you, so I'm not saying you'll be successful (because I don't know)

there is a high risk of bricking your device while downgrading http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/info-warning-risks-downgrading-impacts-t3058202
It's highly risky to downgrade but if you persist just make sure your bootloader and partition table is not the one that got upgtaded with the latest 5.1 rom. If it is the latest then don't do it.
Sent from my Moto X using Tapatalk
You can downgrade completely to 4.4.4.
But don't take OTA, your phone will brick.
The safest way in my opinion is (if you want to downgrade);
- Flash entire official firmware of XT1060 to your phone.
- DON'T TAKE OTA
- Wait for full firmware of XT1060(5.1)
- Flash full firmware of XT1060(5.1)
But if you want to play with 5.1, you can try this;
In my case, I have XT1056, and I wanted to play around with 5.1, so I converted from XT1056(4.4.4) to XT1053(4.4.4), then took OTA to XT1053 (5.1).
After that I tried AOSP but my bluetooth headset had a problem with phone function, then I decided to go back to official firmware again.
Since there is no Lollipop image for XT1053 or XT1056 now, I had to flash another variants like XT1052 and XT1058, but I got no signal.
I had to downgrade to XT1056(4.4.4) and using it for a day. After that I found out that file size of fsg.mbn differ by variants, then I downloaded XT1053(5.1 OTA) to get it.
I mixed up an entire XT1052(5.1 retail EN) with fsg.mbn from XT1053(5.1 OTA) and flashed them manually. Now my XT1056 works very well (with Xposed framework).
Keep in mind that YOU DO THIS ON YOUR OWN RISK.

My situation is same with you. My phone is xt1056 sprint. I converted to xt1053, and got ota to 5.1. But I don't like stock 5.1,there are some bug with graphic... I flashed and used customs Rom CM, PA,Carbon...some day. But now, I want to come back 4.4.4. Can you guide me more details?
I think if you flash complete 4.4.4 from 5.1, phone will bricked, because bootloader can not downgrade as someone said in high risk ...topic. Maybe you can flash 4.4.4 fw with edit xml to NOT flash motoboot and gpt....
Right ?
And last question, if there is a method to flash back 4.4.4, can I flash 4.4.4 xt1053 ? I don't want my phone have many bloatware sprint xt1056.

You can flash back to 4.4.4 of XT1053 or XT1056 as you prefer, I think their radio are compatible.
But when 5.1 comes out, DON'T TAKE OTA. You have to wait for a full firmware to upgrade your phone.
I always use a manual flash method, so I don't have to edit an xml file.
When you downgrades, you will see a warning message, just ignore them.

Do you use fastening to flash fw? And you flash all part inside fw? Include motorboat and got... ? After flash, do you make unlock network again ?
I used mfastboot to flash all CGs to my phone. But you may try to skip some CGs like KidJoe said.
Every time when you return to stock or do a hard reset, you have to do the SIM-unlock process again.

Moto is no longer including the XML to flash via RSDLite, but you could make your own if needed... instead they include a BATCH file which calls a copy of Moto's fastboot to flash it.
That being said... I WARN YOU!!! You will risk bricking your phone if you attempt to downgrade. While there is a slight chance the phone will not brick, we have enough who have bricked to say it is not safe!!
Some will say... "its ok, just skip motoboot.img and gpt.bin when flashing" that isn't safe either. If you later get prompted for and take an OTA update you'll again likely brick. Further when motoboot.img and GPT.BIN are missmatched from the rest of a STOCK Moto rom we've seen "bugs" or "issues" of things no working, like speaker phone, Settings -> Security menu, etc which are not a problem when all parts of your phone are consistent.
You're best bet... wait until a full 5.1 SBF for the Verizon XT1060 is either posted to Moto's web site of Dev Edition Images, or wait until a copy leaks... however, that too many also fail *IF* the GPT.BIN and components of motoboot.img are newer or different in the build you are running compared to what is made available as the XT1060 5.1 SBF.
