A: when you downgrade to hboot 1.44, or it get's downgraded during an ruu, fastboot commands will no longer work and you will be stuck, so you need to use Win7 or Linux (continue reading FAQ)

always use the ruu.zip method if you can find a ruu.zip for your device. it doesn't require hboot downgrade and its now the preferred method in the guide as nkk71 said me earlier today.

He probably got while still on hboot 1.44 (pre June 2013), and then just upgraded the firmware (including hboot to 1.54), that would not change S-Off status.

Exactly that ^

I guess it would be a good idea to post some pointers regarding this issue.
If you're s-on and on fw 1.54, you can't use revone to s-off.
Since you can't s-off, you are limited to flashing only RUUs that are compatible with your CID AND same or higher fw than you currently have on your device.
So to sum it all up, if you are on a higher fw than 1.44 and s-on, you are stuck there. The only possible way to s-off might be using a java card but I personally wouldn't go that way, even if you found some place that can do it.

So if going from 1.55 back to 1.44 is not possible. And Getting S-OFF with 1.55 is not possible.
Would Sprint be able to reflash my phone with either a working 1.55 or 1.44?

[Q] Is it possible to downgrade my phone so I can have S-OFF?

I just my One and it came with the following software:
Android Version: 4.2.2
Software Number: 2.24.401.1
HBOOT: 1.54
I understand that Revone S-OFF is not possible with my HBOOT. But is it possible to downgrade HBOOT (and maybe the software, dunno if it's also needed) and achieve S-OFF?
If so, can anyone point me to the right procedure? Or is it as simple as flashing HBOOT 1.44 (for instance) with the fastboot command and then proceed with Revone S-OFF?

It is possible to downgrade your HBOOT if you had s-off prior to upgrading to HBOOT 1.54. However, it is not possible for the OP because he doesn't already have s-off and wants to downgrade to get it.

It will fail. The RUU checks version numbers and won't allow an earlier version to run.

If you're on HBOOT 1.54 and you don't already have S-OFF, there is no way do downgrade to back to HBOOT 1.44 AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED. However, I could be wrong. I have never had to use an RUU to downgrade an HBOOT. I've only ever used it to downgrade a radio and touchpad driver and to go back to stock ROM. So it might work for you. You should give it a shot. The worst thing that might happen is that it will fail and you will be back to square one.
Let me know how it goes!

Totally correct, the only exception is when you already have S Off, in which case if you run a RUU it will completely wipe your phone and then install the version contained in the ruu, even when it involves downgrade (of hboot, Rom, firmware etc)

But before downgrading hboot, check what RUU are available for ATT. I think there is a 3.xx.502.x RUU that works with hboot 1.55

yes that's the one and on a side note theirs a decrypted version RUU.zip of it that will work with your current MID and CID with a small alteration to the android-info.txt
http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/ruu-zip-m7_ul_jb43_sense50_mr_cingular_us_3-17-502-3-decrypted-zip/
Instructions for Flashing RUU Zip Files:
Download the RUU.zip file and place in your ADB/fastboot folder. I would recommend renaming the zip file to something simple like ruu.zip.
Boot your phone into the bootloader by holding the power and vol up/down buttons at the same time until you see the bootloader screen or if you have your phone booted you can use the ADB command:
adb reboot-bootloader
Now use these fastboot commands:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
Should see the Silver HTC logo. Now issue this command to flash your phone using the ruu.zip file:
fastboot flash zip ruu.zip
Now the first time you issue a command to flash firmware/ruu in fastboot it only prepares the flash. You have to issue the exact command again:
fastboot flash zip ruu.zip
The green status bar usually does not reach the 100% mark. When the output in the command window is complete, you can reboot:
fastboot reboot
**Notes about the RUU.zip method. You still need to have the proper CID for the RUU. You can run the RUU.zip with super CID, but you will have to lock your bootloader first. If you are running the RUU.zip as base to downgrade all your firmware because you are going to then going to restore a stock Nandroid so the RUU might not be made for your MID, so you may need to edit the android-info.txt inside the ruu.zip to include your MID or CID.

hboot 1.55 introduced an interesting patch, when going from S-Off to S-On, after a few reboots it comes back with "tamper detected - rebooting", and then TAMPERED is back in bootloader.
NB: i cannot confirm this to be 100% true, but i've seen more than a few posts that confirm, even after a full signed ruu etc etc etc, this has happened.
only way to avoid it was to go s-on before updating to 1.55 (hence my guide says to downgrade to lowest version)

Looking at your hboot it's likely that the RUU won't work because you would be downgrading the software using that RUU, which you cannot do as you are s on

You can downgrade your hboot to 1.44 but the touch screen won't work with your current Rom. You can supercid though and run any RUU if you are s off
