On my locked, unrooted, unmodded Moto Maker Moto X on Verizon running kit kat 4.4, when I tap Android Version 3 times fast, my screen just dims. I don't get the #1 that I see reported some people get. Then if I long press I do get the red kit kat Android logo and if I long press again, I get the multi colored tiles that move around.
Anyone else not get the #1?
For what it's worth, I do see the #1 just like in the screenshot you've posted, then the Android KitKat logo, then the tiles, on my VZW Edition, unlocked with root access.

Thanks, I wonder what is wrong with mine? This is true both for my unlocked, rooted Verizon Dev Ed and my locked, unrooted, stock Moto Maker.
I get this:
4.4.2 unlocked and rooted
tapped out via XT1053 DE

Interesting, I thought only the Nexi got the spinning K.
It's based off of the build number, I believe. The build number on the Verizon Moto X (4.4) is 13.11.1Q2.X-69-3. I believe the 4.4.2 release build numbers start with a K. I can't verify, since I don't have access to 4.4.2, but I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere. The build number on my Nexus 7 starts with a K, though, and it displays a K.

My unlocked gsm Moto X firmware version is 4.4, is that different from 4.4.2? Some rooting protocol requires 4.4.2, that's why I am asking. I just don't want to brick it.

The Moto X doesn't have 4.4.2. It has 4.4. If you're reading a root guide that references 4.4.2, it probably isn't for the Moto X. You should only use a guide/process specifically for the device you are trying to root.
You can see the software version by going to Settings > About Phone (very bottom) > Android version (4th item down).
Im getting my new ATT 32GB Moto X on Monday and after flashing my Samsung Galaxy S3 into the ground I thought I would leave the Moto X running the stock ROM for a while but rooted.
My question is, in reading some of the threads it looks like I will have to re-root after every Kit Kat update pushed out from Motorola, is this the case? Is there a method that will add root privileges back after the phone reboots from the update? Lastly, any suggestion on what root procedure is working the best?

Can we assume you bought the consumer version ? If so, looks like your SOL. Root method only works up to 4.4.
If you bought the DE veraion ? Root is straight forward as unlocking your bootloader , flashing recovery

Yes I did purchase the consumer version so it does look like I am SOL. Thanks for the quick reply.

Is it just me or has Moto never rolled out 4.4.4 to the unlocked GSM editions? My mom bought an unlocked phone straight from Motorola and yet she's still on 4.4.3. We're using the phone on T-Mobile if that makes a difference.

It's not just you. T mobile version got 4.4.3. A bug was found after they started rolling it out, so they fixed it for the other models (that's the main difference between 4.4.3 and 4.4.4). Most of the other features/upgrades were included in 4.4.3, so they didn't make updating the t-mobile edition a priority. It'll probably get it after they finish all of the others are done unless android L is ready to go by then, in which case, it'll probably just get that.

Moto Firmwares
Oops, looks like the site is down.
I got 4.4.4 just a week ago on Dev Edition
I got 4.4.4 just a week ago on Dev Edition, although its not TMobile,
So might be possible, yours on the way.:good:
4.4.4 for t-mobile version (any XT1053 model) was delivered a couple of weeks ago. Go to settings/about phone/system updates and you should update if you have a factory phone - if you have unlocked or rooted, go back to factory spec before trying to update.
I have search in XDA with no results. I have a Moto X (2012) XT1060 standar version 16GB [Carrier VZW]. I request for a bootloader unlock in motorola's webpage but this model is not listed. I tried using WinDroid and the page said that this device can't be unlocked.
Remember this is not a Developer Edition, it's a 16GB version unlocked band to any carrier, it was from VZW.
And is not only me, many users have the same problem, they can't unlock their devices.
Why? and is there a solution... How?
Thank you for you attention.
You can thank big "v" for that. They, along with att I believe, restrict Motorola from giving out the bootloader unlock codes. Mind you that's different from a phone being "carrier unlocked." With the China middleman mia, your only current option is to try and use sunshine 2.0. If that doesn't work then you will have to wait for sunshine 3.0 which is said to be released "soon" but don't ask what exactly that means. In the meantime, don't update to official lollipop should it be released before sunshine.
Don't forget Republic wireless... (The big 3 that can't unlock are Verizon, ATT and Republic Wireless)

4.4.3 on a Verizon XT1060? I think that is a typo.
THe Verizon XT1060 never had 4.4.3, only 4.4.4, 4.4.2, 4.4, and then the couple of 4.2.2 versions.
If you have 4.4.4 Sunshine likely wont work.
If you have 4.4.2 and have never upgraded to 4.4.4, then Sunshine should do the trick.

goto their page and live support, the dev fixed it for me and gave me a special version, he said it would be patched into 3.04 or 3.0.5 yesterday anyways, so you may want to goto the site and see if it's updated.
better to buy a dev edition...

Not better than a $100 mint condition non-dev edition, which now has an unlocked bootloader thanks to the wonderful support from therootninja (as gchase23 suggested, they hooked me up with an older version that works with the Moto X with 4.2.2).

I don't know if vzw provides unlock codes.
But what I can say is warranty won't affect your chance of getting an unlock code.
You should check on moto website.
If you enter the imei number they'll tell you whether it can be unlocked

No. Moto will never give out the bootloader unlock code on the Non-Developer Edition XT1060 (likely due to their contract with Verizon), and Verizon does not give them out (for dev edition either).
And with the locked bootloader, once 4.4.4 is on your phone, you can't root it.

Its likely for an OLDER ROM.
There were about 3 or 4 different processes for X with a locked bootloader, but it was based on ROM version on the phone (i.e. 4.2.2 w/camera update, 4.4, 4.42). Once 4.4.4 is on there, all past vulnerabilities that were exploited on phones with locked bootloaders have been patched/closed, so if you have 4.4.4 on the phone and can't unlock the bootloader, you can't root.
