Brand new to rooting and I have some questions. - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I used to have a Galaxy S3 and the charging port was jacked up so I was not able to hold a USB connection long enough to be able to root. But now I have an HTC One. I know I can't root yet because I have a Verizon One with 4.4.2. But I have a few questions before I'm even able to root.
Anyway, what is a recovery?

Look, a custom recovery like TWRP or Clockworkmod allows you to root, flash a custom rom, make a backup, restore the system image or wipe the phone. Every single phone has a stock recovery, but this doesn't allow you to do the features of a custom recovery as I mentioned above. The stock recovery only allows you to flash the official firmwares, provided that you have a matching model ID and carrier ID.
So, in basic terms, rooting requires a custom recovery. TWRP is the recommended recovery for HTC One

Troubles Unrooting/Removing Clockwork URGENT!

Here's the story:
A while back, I rooted my Nexus One without unlocking using the bait and switch method, and had been using various custom ROMs.
Recently, the power button hasn't been working well, so I called HTC to get a swap. Obviously, before sending my phone back, I need to unroot it.
I tried to restore my phone using the method in the XDA guides, but it hung on each step, and it didn't actually do anything. So, I flashed the non-rooted stock ERE27 through ROM Manager (this, I suspect was a huge mistake.)
Now, I have an rooted phone, that fails on any update attempt and so is stuck on 2.1, and worse, Clockwork Recovery is still on there. I've tried to unroot my phone again using both the bait and switch method, and the freenexus method, but both have run into errors. I've also tried installing Universal Androot and clicking Unroot, but it just tells me my phone isn't rooted.
So, I can't root my phone to attempt to flash the recovery, and I can't find a way to remove Clockwork Recovery, but I need to send this phone back to HTC within the next 7 days, or else I'm gonna be out $530.
Any ideas?
First: hate to be a douche, but someone's gotta say it: this is the wrong subforum for a question thread. Take a quick glance over the rules stickied at the top of the forum. There's a Q&A forum for things like this.
Second: HTC has typically honored the warranty for known hardware problems (of which the power button is probably the biggest) even for unlocked/rooted devices. They find for me, no problems. So relax.
Last, try using ClockworkMod recovery to flash CM 6 stable, then from that ROM, try flashing back to stock recovery. After that you should be able to flash a stock OTA ROM. You can't change recovery without root access, which you can't get on a stock ROM. So you have to change recovery first. And on your new phone, you should really just fastboot OEM unlock. Trying to deceive HTC makes them not want to give us this option anymore.
Yup no worries I had to send mine in because the trackball got stuck and they got it under warranty ... I had my phone running a custom recovery and rom and they didn't even ask about it.

how to root this phone?

Hi, i have one piece nexus one android version 2.2, build number FRF91. Can anyone tell me how to root this phone and please sugest a ROM with portuguese language?
Thank you.
Well, i checked the newbie link. Just need to know a few facts:
1) How do i know if my Nexus One is a retail one so that i can unlock the bottloader?
2) To root the phone is it necessary to go to command prompt? Can i just click on 'install-superboot-windows'?
3) Is it necessary to flash custom recovery image? Why is required?
Last can anyone sugggest me a ROM with portuguese language in it?
Thank you.
Notes:
- For FRF91, Universal Androot will work(it does not work for FRG33 and after) for rooting(without unlocking bootloader). It is installed like normal Android app, and you can root your device with it(but sometimes it fails). Also, there're other one-click rooting tools like z4root and SuperOneClick.
- If the custom ROM is built from AOSP, it will support Portugese.

SO basically is this what i have to do?
1) Turn usb debugging on, root with superoneclick with phone connected.."charge mode"?
2) Flash rom
also, do i need to flash recovery image?
You will want to install either clockwork or amon-ra recovery. If you leave the current recovery, you are still able to receive OTA updates that, if installed, you will lose root.
As a side note, has anyone noticed that rooting the N1 was never an issue until the 1-clicks and the androot tools came along? Nothing against those tools, they work and people can leave a bootloader locked. But it seems to me that was always the choice you had to make with your device. Root it or not? Having your cake and eating it too has led to more and more lazy "how do I do this?", "this isn't working", what am I doing wrong"? posts. It has already been proven time and time again that HTC doesn't really care about an unlocked bootloader for hardware related warranty work. If it is software related (rare) it was probably your fault and you don't deserve warranty service.
Oh well...thats my .02
1. download Universal Androot from the market or here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747598. Install. Run. Get root.
2. download ROM Manager from the market or here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=639153. Install Clockwork Recover or Amon-Ra recover. You don't absolutely have to install a custom recovery, but why would you not? It allows you to do so many useful things including a Nandroid backup.
3. download a ROM of your choice. My favorite is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=714184 but most ROMs will have your language. Install via ROM manager or boot into recovery and install.
Well i rooted with superclick then when i go into recovery mode and click on recovery it shows a white triangle. I removed the memory card while rooting, could that be the problem?
How did you remove the sdcard while rooting? That would also mean you pulled the battery? Or did you bend it up enough to get it out? Either way, don't ever do that.
Read my signature.
I removed the memory card before rooting, anyway thanks guys for your reply...i will check the wiki and redo process with sdcard tomorrow..
JUst one more question, should i install rom through rom manager or manually go into recovery mode?

Sounds like you still have the stock recovery. Install a custom recovery.
Do this ----> Download ROM Manager from the market or here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=639153.
Then, you can install Clockwork Recovery or Amon-Ra recovery to flash ROM (and do Nandroid backups).
Or, you can use ROM manager to flash your ROM.
Please, please do a Nandroid back-up before flashing a custom ROM. (You can do this through Rom Manager).
This should be the first advice you are given above all else!

[Q] Nexus One stock GRJ22 (rooted) with apps2ext?

I'm currently running with a rooted version of the latest stock firmware on my N1, and I love the stability and all, except Google's apps2sd implementation is really dumb.
With only a dozen or so apps I am already getting low storage errors.
I've tried flashing in DT's apps2sd but unfortunately it didn't seem to work at all. Are there any other options for me to get apps2ext support without switching to a custom rom?
Try Link2sd in the Market.
It may be better, it may not, but it's worth a try...
Hey SmallWalrus,
I am running stock 2.3.4 unrooted Nexus one. (yes, that is GRJ22)
I have never rooted a phone. Can you please point me somewhere which shows how to unlock and root the N1 with my specs. My phone is pretty old. I am only rooting it because this is a spare one and I now have moved to SGS2.
PS: using a mac and Linux machine. If not then please show me a windows one. i'll try dual booting my macbook pro.

Have you unlocked your bootloader? That was how I did it though, there is no other way to root 2.3.4 without doing this at the moment.
That is what i want to know. How do i do that safely?
Well there is a way to safely root your phone without unlocking the bootloader, I did those steps recently and they worked fine for me.
1. You need to downgrade your phone to Froyo. Get the FRG83 image from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Nexus_One/Roms
Rename it to PASSIMG.zip and copy it to the root folder of your SD Card. Boot your phone into the bootloader and flash the image. This will wipe your device, so be sure to make a backup of your data and apps first.
2. Use SuperOneClick to root your phone. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
3. Now you need to flash a custom recovery. I used the Clockworkmod one, because flashing it is very simple: install the Rom Manager app from the market, it has an option to flash the recovery.
4. Now you are set to flash custom ROMs, either through Rom Manager or the Recovery. You should however do a Nandroid Backup first, in case anything goes wrong in flashing the ROM. Boot into Recovery and you should see a menu item saying Backup or something.
It's really not a big deal as it sounds, I can't guarantee that this will work for you. You should know what you are doing and if you feel unsafe about any of these steps, make sure to search the forums or the web about it, before you execute it.

Sorry, I didn't see your question until now
Actually, it IS very easy to do this, you can find the instructions here:
http://android.modaco.com/topic/299078-how-to-unlock-the-bootloader-on-your-nexus-one/
It does have some warranty implications though, but since I am already using an import set I don't care. According to some, HTC usually shuts one eye and fix your phone's hardware failures even if it has an unlocked bootloader, but YMMV.

If i flash custom rom, where can i find original rom?

1) Good
2) With S-OFF, you have the totally control of your phone.
For example, now, you're S-On (you can read it in bootloader), but you can't change or edit some file in some directory of soc, like the directory where are allocated the code for "tampered line etc".
P.s. For thanking there is a button

aaah, well then I understand a bit more Just one more question. every custom rom sais i have to put the .zip file on sd card, but there is not a sd card for this phone. i have seen some solutions with mini usb to usb with memory stick in it. if i do not have this, can i install rom any other way in twrp or cwm?
You have been thanked btw
"Put rom into your SD".
With our one, we have an Virtual SD into the phone.
In android, you can put the rom into it, and you can flash the rom
P.s. Don't make any wipe with recovery, you can delete your rom.
Do a full wipe in aroma when it ask you for choose.
You can also flash a rom without it on the phone, but with an OTG cable
And, for me, TWRP is better then CWM

hi again, sorry for so many questions but this one is driving me craizy!
i unlocked my phone via www.htcdev.com and tried the twrp recovery, got root and everything was dandy. But as it turns out i have gotten a phone that has the buildquality problem with cracks, and spacing in the chassie. so i would like to send it back and get a new one. So i try to unroot the device but no luck.
I have tried the supersu app---> options---> full unroot. I have to restart, but then root and the root icon is back. how can i fix this, so that the device is unrooted? Have also tried factory reset after that.

You can't flash any custom recoveries because the bootloader is locked. The only thing we have close to it is Safestrap. Look at the Safestrap thread in the development section. It will tell you all you need to know.
And for the record, there is a TON of stuff out there about the locked bootloader preventing custom recoveries, kernels, AOSP ROMs, etc.
Do I need to update to KK And I'll be able to use regular recovery?

I did not want to update due to the fact I could send apps to the SD anymore.

The bootloader is locked on KitKat as well. "Upgrading" to KitKat would be even worse because there is no root for it yet and once you install the official update you cannot go back to 4.3.
There is absolutely NO way to use custom recoveries, custom kernels, or AOSP ROMs on the N900A because the bootloader is locked in all firmware versions for the N900A. There is no way to unlock it and probably never will be unless AT&T releases an update that unlocks it, which is very unlikely.
If you want TWRP, CM11, and custom kernels, sell your AT&T Note 3 and buy the T-Mobile version. It has an unlocked bootloader so you can do whatever you want to it. It is fully compatible with AT&T's network. There are guides around here somewhere that go more in depth and explain how too do it.
Thanks man. I got safestrap installed now. What r the down sides to using that? I'm on the ATT next program. I return my phones every 18months for new ones so I can't trade or sell it.

The only major downsides in my opinion are if you try to do the hold volume up+home+power button to get to recovery (or is it volume down? I forget...), you go straight to the stock recovery instead of Safestrap. Also, if you don't hit the button to boot into Safestrap in time you have to wait for the phone to finish booting, turn it off, and try again. You can't flash kernels with it either, but that's not Safestrap's fault.
It has its upsides as well. You get several slots for flashing ROMs and mods so you can run several different ROMs at the same time without having to wipe out your phone to try a new ROM. Each ROM you flash has to be based off the same version of android, though. That means no Fire Note in the stock slot, Dynamic KitKat in the first, S5 experience in the second, etc. There's more discussion about that in the Safestrap thread.
