[Q] Install ROM without installing root - Moto X Q&A

So I have an unlockable bootloader XT1058. Currently running 4.4.2 I wanted to root, but have read rooting includes downgrading and doing things I'm not too comfortable in doing (image flashing has claimed one of my phones before). So I was thinking, installing CWM or TWRP looks actually simpler than rooting the phone. I really don't care about losing data on the phone, but would like to do a nandroid before installing a custom ROM. So the question is: can I Install custom recovery, do a nandroid and flash custom ROM without first rooting?

Nice temper ya got there.
Technically ...an unlockable boot loader would mean you have the only Moto x in existence that has a boot loader incapable of being locked. Ever. Lol
Also....did you read at all? If you mean to say your boot loader is unlocked, then flashing a custom recovery and rooting is the easiest thing in the world to do. And the info on doing it is all over the Moto x forums.......but.....you'd have to read. it's no different than doing it on a nexus. Just a hint.

You change it from locked to unlocked, so unlock it flash recovery and you can do what ever you want from there
Rooting is up to you but most people root , you don't need to
Yes I would suggest doing a nandroid prior to rooting of the stock system img

Sorry for the response, I'm on the phone and didn't really measure my response.. The thing I wanted to know is if my bootloader is unlocked, can I install custom recovery and do a nandroid without first having root or is root necessary to install custom recovery and backup?

Root is not required. Unlock bootloader, mfastboot flash recovery, boot into recovery and you can nondroid back up.

Never have I flashed a custom recovery and not immediately rooted after. So try it. It'll work or it won't. LOL
Why not root? Its simple. Twrp will do it for you even.

OK thanks. I just read somewhere that to do the nandroid you had to have root since you could not access certain directories... I've had Nexus phones for the last 3 phones so I'm not used to all this knieving and shady proceedings to install root and ROMs

An unlocked Moto x is no different than a nexus at all. As far as rooting and installing roms.
Except maybe backward compatibility. My N7 today I flashed the 4.2.2 bootloader....from kit kat and flashed a 4.2.2 rom after. That won't work on an x.
But as long as you're not trying to go back in versions....the procedure for the x and a nexus are nearly identical. Unlocked bootloader x's of course.

I'm considering unlocking my bootloader through Motorola. Other than voiding my warranty, is there any reason I shouldn't do it? What are your thoughts?

That's the only negative reason...... warranty. Other then once you start messing with the system, it will break being able update via the OTA's. SO..... I would recommend doing a backup after unlocking the bootloader, flashing recovery, and the first boot up. Therefore you'll have a backup of 100% stock not midified. Then as long as custom recoveries will flash the OTA's, you can always have a quicke easy way to upgrade. Unlocking the bootloader also wipes everything. That's all I got.

I think he meant you are able to flash the "zip" updates (via custom recovery).
Afaik, when you use a custom recovery, you should not take an update via OTA, or else your phone will boot loop.

Unlocking your bootloader shouldn't affect your ability to take OTAs. Rooting or installing a custom recovery certainly might. But just unlocking the bootloader without then installing a custom recovery or rooting isn't very common. Most folks unlock the bootloader for one or both of those reasons.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2446515 seems to have a lot of good info on getting a moto x back to stock, at which point you should be able to take an OTA. I've never used RSD Lite, just done various combinations of fastboot and clockworkmod/twrp (on other phones), but it appears either approach can work - which makes sense since RSD Lite seems to use fastboot behind the scenes.

Rooting

What is the past of least resistance to root a 4.4 tmo X? In order to keep data, is it still that insanely long process?
Sent from my XT1053 using Tapatalk
Bump............
WIth the T-Mobile variant you have two choices to root..
1. Unlock bootloader, flash twrp recovery, boot into twrp and install SU (or use TWRP's option to root). But this voids your warranty (since you don't have the developer edition), and unlocking the boot loader will wipe your device and data.
2. Use SlapMyMoto which has a lot of manual steps, and you need to reboot to "recovery" (well its modified and you don't have recovery), when you want R/W ability. (Or you have to also do the MotoWpNoMo process to gain R/W full time). But this has many steps.

OTA's will be more painful with #2 as there will be more to restore to stock. And of course the unknowns of if the new OTA will be rootable or not, and how long before a root process comes out.
For #1, you should be able to just put stock recovery back and take the OTA, then reflash TWRP and re-root.

Well, if you don't have an unlocked bootloader, SlapMyMoto (which now incorporates the MotoWpNoMo process into its steps) is the only way (there have been some efforts to consolidate/automate the process). And may not be usable if you're already on 4.4.2 (taking the 4.4.2 OTA update or flashing the full 4.4.2 SBF prevents you from flashing older ROMs which is a crucial step in using SlapMyMoto).
I've not see a 4.4.2 specific root process for locked bootloaders yet, but to be honest, I have a unlocked bootloader, so I haven't been completely paying attention.
If you have an unlocked bootloader, root process is still the same.
there is not going to be any new way to root 4.4 is not going to get a new exploit because 4.4.2 is out and Devs are working on finding a way to root it so the people with locked bootloaders can update.
if you want to root your device you have allready been giving the only 2 ways to do it
Locked bootloader - SlapMyMoto
Unlocked bootloader - Customer Recovery and SUPERSU
please dont bump your thread for info you allready have.
here is a link to both guides for both methods and a guide for unlocking your bootloader.

[Q] T-Mobile/Unlocked GSM Moto X Root

Okay, got a strange question here. I plan on going from the N5 to the unlocked GSM MotoMaker Moto X version. All I want is root with stock recovery (don't really care for a custom recovery, plus I'd like to still receive OTAs). Can I unlock the Moto X bootloader, load TWRP recovery (instead of flash), and then install SuperSU? Or do I *have* to flash TWRP to achieve root?
correct me if im wrong, but I think you can "unlock the Moto X bootloader, load TWRP recovery (instead of flash), and then install SuperSU".
or
use one of the methods in the original android development section to achieve root.

Yes, I've looked at those threads. However, in 4.4, a backdoor needs to be introduced in order to maintain root. I'd rather not have to do that and I don't mind unlocking bootloaders. This will be my first, non-Nexus device in awhile, so I just wanted to make sure I can just unlocked the bootloader, load a custom recovery, flash SuperSU and then just have root.

Just unlock your boot loader, flash twrp recovery and finally flash supersu and you're good to go. Ota's can not be accepted and flashed with root or custom recovery on the moto

Hi I am planing my first root and I am honestly a little confused. I am on TMobile with 4.4 KitKat (Moto X).
I understand how to unlock the Bootloader and that I need to install TWRP before I can activate SU.
I am just not sure about the bugs (if any) with TWRP and what version to use.
The reason for my concern is on the TWRP website the Moto X is not listed as a supported device.
Is this video Tutorial still valid - is this how to do it with 4.4 KitKat?
And is this the latest version that works (what are the known bugs)?

You can root without unlocking, but you're limited in what you can still do.

no you can downgrade from 4.4 to 4.2.2 with a locked bootloader. many people have done it. you just cant flash CWM or TWRP with a locked bootloader.

Ok dumb question, but I'm still trying to learn here.
*a bit of background
Rogers 4.4.2 moto x
Locked boot loader
No root
Dead stock
*
There are 3 custom recoveries for the Moto X I've found out about so far.
TWRP and CWM (used Clockwork on all my other rooted devices) but these are specifically for unlocked boot loader device. Unlocking the boot loader doesn't seem that difficult (just go to the Motorola website I believe (I have the Rogers XT1058 so it should work )).
Then there's Safe Strap. Supposedly you don't have to have the boot loader unlocked for this to work so this seems like an easier method to gain custom recovery.
Now my dumb question(s):
Is the only difference the need if the boot loader to be locked or unlocked?
Do I need to run slap my moto or a similar tool to disable write protection?
The main question really:
I am really interested in Gravity Box! Would SafeStrap be the way to go? Or do I need to go through Slapmymoto, TWRP or CWM and go from there?
Any help is greatly appreciated! Still trying to learn about what's what because I love this phone but really just want to get rid of the navigation bar and have PIE controls for a full screen mode
Thanks everyone! Good day to all!

Since you're updated to 4.4.2 you will need to unlock your bootloader to root the phone(which also voids the warranty on a Rogers phone).
Once it is unlocked install whichever custom recovery you prefer and have fun modding.

Steve-X is right because you are not rooted right now you wont be able to install safestrap.
your only option if you want root is to unlock your bootloader.
but if you do that you have a choice of Clockwork mod or TWRP custom recovery.(me personally i would not use safestrap on a unlocked bootloader)
if you dont want to unlock your bootloader then im sorry to say there is no root option for you right now or custom recovery's
if you do thou rooting your phone is very simple
unlock bootloader
install customer recovery of your choice
flash SuperSU
then you have Root.
